A regular static, spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole solution of general relativity coupled to a new theory for nonlinear electrodynamics is presented. This theory has the interesting feature that, at far distances from the black hole, in the weak field limit, the theory reduces to Maxwell Lagrangian with Heisenberg-Euler correction term of quantum electrodynamics. The singular center of the black hole is replaced by flat, de Sitter, or anti de Sitter space, if the spacetime in which the black hole is embedded is asymptotically flat, de Sitter, or anti de Sitter, respectively. Requiring the correspondence to Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian at large distances, in the weak field limit, we find that (\textit{i}) a minimum mass is required for the formation of an event horizon for the regular static, spherically symmetric solution of the theory, and, (\textit{ii}) the mass of the solution must be quantized. We also study the basic thermodynamic properties of the black hole solution and show that they are qualitatively similar to those of Reissner-Nordström black hole.
Considering electrically charged test particles, we continue our study of the exterior dynamics of a charged Weyl black hole which has been previously investigated regarding the motion of mass-less and (neutral) massive particles. In this paper, the deflecting trajectories of charged particles are designated as being gravitationally Rutherford-scattered and detailed discussions of angular and radial particle motions are presented.
In this paper, new electrically charged asymptotically flat black hole solutions are numerically derived in the context of higher derivative gravity. These solutions can be interpreted as generalizations of two different classes of non-charged asymptotically flat spacetimes: Schwarzschild and non-Schwarzschild solutions. Extreme black hole solutions and black holes with negative mass were found.
Using a general solution-generating technique for electrically charged relativistic stars with spherical symmetry, we derive a new bound on the mass-radius ratio. This compactness bound is based on the already established bounds for uncharged interior solutions and it will provide the corresponding generalizations in presence of the electric charge.
We study the Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D compactified, electrically charged black strings. We consider static, linear perturbations of these solutions and derive master equation for these perturbations. Using numerical analysis we search for the threshold unstable modes and derive the critical wave-length. The results are illustrated in the black string mass v.s. electric charge phase diagram. Similar diagram is constructed using global thermodynamic equilibrium argument applied to the charged string and 5D electrically charged black hole. The results derived illustrate that electric ch…
In the present paper we construct a new solution to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity equations describing electrically charged dilaton black holes immersed in a strong external magnetic field and we study its properties. The black holes described by the solution are rotating but with zero total angular momentum and possess an ergoregion confined in a neighborhood of the horizon. Our results also show that the external magnetic field does not affect the black hole thermodynamics.
Regular black hole solutions are found among the Guilfoyle exact solutions. These are spherically symmetric solutions of general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter where the metric potentials and electromagnetic fields are related in some particularly simple form. We show that, for certain ranges of the parameters, there are objects which correspond to regular charged black holes, whose interior region is filled by an electrically charged phantom-like fluid, or, in the limiting case, a de Sitter false vacuum fluid, and whose exterior region is Reissner-Nordströ…
We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordström black hole.
It is argued that an electronically charged dilaton black hole can support a long range field of a Nielsen-Olesen string. Combining both numerical and perturbative techniques we examine the properties of an Abelian-Higgs vortex in the presence of the black hole under consideration. Allowing the black hole to approach extremality we found that all fields of the vortex are expelled from the extreme black hole. In the thin string limit we obtained the metric of a conical electrically charged dilaton black hole. The effect of the vortex can be measured from infinity justifying its characterization…
We give a comparative description of monopole and electrically charged spherically symmetric dust thin shells. Herewith we consider two of the most interesting configurations: the hollow shell and shell, surrounding a body with opposite charge. The classification of shells in accordance with the types of black holes and traversable wormholes is constructed. The theorems for the parameters of turning points are proved. Also for atomlike configurations the effects of screening (electrical case) and amplification (monopole case) of the internal mass by shell charge are studied. Finally, one consi…
We consider a self-consistent Einstein-Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond system in the bulk D=4 space-time interacting with a variable-tension electrically charged lightlike brane. The latter serves both as a material and charge source for gravity and electromagnetism, as well as it dynamically generates a bulk space varying cosmological constant. We find an asymmetric wormhole solution describing two "universes" with different spherically symmetric black-hole-type geometries connected through a "throat" occupied by the lightlike brane. The electrically neutral "left universe" comprises the exterior region …
In this work we investigate the presence of electrically charged structures that are localized in two and three spatial dimensions. We use the Maxwell-scalar Lagrangian to describe several systems with distinct interactions for the scalar fields. The procedure relies on finding first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion and ensure stability of the corresponding minimum energy solutions. We illustrate the many possibilities in two and in three spatial dimensions, examining different examples of electrically charged solutions that engender internal structure
Thermal radiation of electrically charged fermions from rotating black hole with electric and magnetic charges in de Sitter space is considered. The tunnelling probabilities for outgoing and incoming particles are obtained and the Hawking temperature is calculated. The relation for the classical action for the particles in the black hole's background is also found.
We show that the Bronnikov theorem on the nonexistence of regular electrically charged black holes can be circumvented. In the frame of nonlinear electrodynamics, we present the exact regular black hole solutions of a hybrid type. They are electrically charged, but contain a `dual' core confining a polarization of magnetic charges. The considered example is based on a modification of the Ayón-Beato & Garc\'ıa solution. It represents a very specific realization of the idea on confinement based on dual electrodynamics and dual superconductivity.
We obtain static and rotating electrically charged black holes of a Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory of the Brans-Dicke type in (2+1)-dimensions. The theory is specified by three fields, the dilaton, the graviton and the electromagnetic field, and two parameters, the cosmological constant and the Brans-Dicke parameter. It contains eight different cases, of which one distinguishes as special cases, string theory, general relativity and a theory equivalent to four dimensional general relativity with one Killing vector. We find the ADM mass, angular momentum, electric charge and dilaton charge and…
A static spherically symmetric black hole usually turns out to be either a Schwarzschild black hole or a Reissner-Nordström black hole. This result was summarised by Ruffini and Wheeler as the so-called no hair conjecture which states that for a spherically symmetric black hole only the information about mass ($M$) and electric charge ($e$) of the black hole is available for an external observer. In this work, we calculate the emission rate of charged particles from an asymptotically flat charged spherically symmetric black hole endowed with a scalar hair using a semi-classical tunneling forma…
The Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in 2+1 spacetime dimensions discussed by Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli are solved by assuming a self(anti-self)dual equation. The solution describes an electrically charged extreme black hole with an angular momentum.
We construct generating solutions for general D-dimensional ($4 \le D \le 9$) rotating, electrically charged, black holes in the effective action of toroidally compactified heterotic (or Type IIA) string. The generating solution is parameterized by the ADM mass, two electric charges and $[{D-1}\over 2]$ angular momenta (as well as the asymptotic values of one toroidal modulus and the dilaton field). For $D \ge 6$, those are generating solutions for {\it general} black holes in toroidally compactified heterotic (or type IIA) string. Since in the BPS-limit (extreme limit) these solutions have si…
Electrically-charged Lifshitz spacetimes are hard to come by. In this paper, we construct a class of such solutions in five dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to Maxwell and $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills fields. The solutions are electrically-charged under the Maxwell field, whose equation is sourced by the Yang-Mills instanton(-like) configuration living in the hyperbolic four-space of the Lifshitz spacetime. We then introduce a dilaton and construct charged and colored Lifshitz spacetimes with hyperscaling violations. We obtain a class of exact Lifshitz black holes. We also perform similar constructi…
We obtain electrically charged vortex solutions for the Born-Infeld Higgs system with a Chern Simons term. We analyse numerically these solutions, comparing their properties with those of ``normal'' Nielsen-Olesen vortices and also show that no charged vortex solutions exist in Born-Infeld theory when the Chern Simons term is absent.
In this work, we generalise the spontaneous scalarization phenomena in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar models to a higher spin field. The result is an Einstein-Maxwell-Vector model wherein a vector field is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell invariant by an exponential coupling function. We show that the latter guarantees the circumvention of an associated no-hair theorem when the vector field has the form of an electric field. Different than its scalar counterpart, the new spontaneously vectorized Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes are, always, undercharged while being entropically preferable. The…
The Einstein-Maxwell theory with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions is considered. It is shown that the Smarr relation for the electrically charged BTZ black hole emerges from two different approaches based on the scaling symmetry of the asymptotic behaviour of the fields at infinity. In the first approach, we prove that the conservation law associated to the scale invariance of the action for a class of stationary and circularly symmetric configurations, allows to obtain the Smarr formula as long as a special set of holographic boundary conditions is satisfied. This …
We study spherically symmetric finite energy solutions of two Higgs-Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs (HCS-YMH) models in $3+1$ dimensions, one with gauge group $SO(5)$ and the other with $SU(3)$. The Chern-Simons (CS) densities are defined in terms of both the Yang-Mills (YM) and Higgs fields and the choice of the two gauge groups is made so they do not vanish. The solutions of the $SO(5)$ model carry only electric charge and zero magnetic charge, while the solutions of the $SU(3)$ model are dyons carrying both electric and magnetic charges like the Julia-Zee (JZ) dyon. Unlike the latter however…
Our research focus on gravitational collapse of electrically charged scalar field in dilaton gravity and in the presence of phantom coupling. We examine dynamical behaviour of the scalar field coupled to Maxwell field when gravitational interactions have form consistent with the low-energy limit of the string theory. Moreover, we allow the evolving fields to have negative sign in front of the respective kinetic term of the Lagrangian. The main aim of our studies is to investigate in what manner does the phantom nature of either Maxwell or dilaton fields (or both of them) affect the outcomes of…
We study quasinormal modes related to gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of spherically symmetric charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics. Beyond the linear Maxwell electrodynamics, we consider a class of Lagrangian with higher-order corrections written by the electromagnetic field strength and its Hodge dual with arbitrary coefficients, and we parametrize the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in terms of the coefficients. It is confirmed that the isospectrality of quasinormal modes under parity is generally violated due to nonlinear electrodynamics. As applications…
We calculated the dimensionless gyromagnetic ratio ("$g$-factor") of self-gravitating, uniformly rotating disks of dust with a constant specific charge $ε$. These disk solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations depend on $ε$ and a "relativity parameter" $γ$ ($0<γ\le 1$) up to a scaling parameter. Accordingly, the $g$-factor is a function $g=g(γ,ε)$. The Newtonian limit is characterized by $γ\ll 1$, whereas $γ\to 1$ leads to a black-hole limit. The $g$-factor, for all $ε$, approaches the values $g=1$ as $γ\to 0$ and $g=2$ as $γ\to 1$.
Dark matter and dark energy are dominating components of the Universe. Their presence affects the course and results of processes, which are driven by the gravitational interaction. The objective of the paper was to examine the influence of the dark sector on the gravitational collapse of an electrically charged scalar field. A phantom scalar field was used as a model of dark energy in the system. Dark matter was modeled by a complex scalar field with a quartic potential, charged under a U(1)-gauge field. The dark components were coupled to the electrically charged scalar field via the exponen…
We study a non-local ghost-free Lorentz invariant modification of the Maxwell equations in four- and higher-dimensional flat spacetimes. We construct solutions of these equations for stationary charged and magnetized objects and use them to find the field created by such objects moving with the speed of light.
An electrically charged black hole solution with scalar hair in four dimensions is presented. The self-interacting scalar field is real and it is minimally coupled to gravity and electromagnetism. The event horizon is a surface of negative constant curvature and the asymptotic region is locally an AdS spacetime. The asymptotic fall-off of the fields is slower than the standard one. The scalar field is regular everywhere except at the origin, and is supported by the presence of electric charge which is bounded from above by the AdS radius. In turn, the presence of the real scalar field smooths …
We show that Guilfoyle's exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for spherical symmetric static electrically charged matter with a Reissner-Nordström exterior possess a bewildering plethora of different types of solutions. For the parameter space of the solutions we use two normalized variables, $q^2/R^2$ and $r_0/R$, where $q$ is the total electric charge, $r_0$ is the radius of the object, and $R$ is a length representing the square root of the inverse energy density of the matter. The two other parameters, the mass $m$ and the Guilfoyle parameter $a$, both dependent on $q$, $r_0$ …
In this paper we will construct a linearized metric solution for an electrically charged system in a {\it ghost-free} infinite derivative theory of gravity which is valid in the entire region of spacetime. We will show that the gravitational potential for a point-charge with mass $m$ is non-singular, the Kretschmann scalar is finite, and the metric approaches conformal-flatness in the ultraviolet regime where the non-local gravitational interaction becomes important. We will show that the metric potentials are bounded below one as long as two conditions involving the mass and the electric char…
In this note we present (electrically) charged dilatonic black ring solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions and we consider their physical properties. These solutions are static and as in the neutral case possess a conical singularity. We show how one may remove the conical singularity by application of a Harrison transformation, which physically corresponds to supporting the charged ring with an electric field. Finally, we discuss the slowly rotating case for arbitrary dilaton coupling.
In this work we extend and generalize our previous work on the scale dependence at the level of the effective action of black holes in the presence of non-linear electrodynamics. In particular, we consider the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory without a cosmological constant in (2+1) dimensions, assuming a scale dependence of both the gravitational and the electromagnetic coupling and we investigate in detail how the scale--dependent scenario affects the horizon and thermodynamic properties of the classical black holes for any value of the power parameter. In addition, we solve the corresponding e…
A large family of new black hole solutions in 2+1-dimensional Einstein-Power-Maxwell (EPM) gravity with prescribed physical properties is derived. We show with particular examples that according to the power parameter k of the Maxwell field, the obtained solutions may be asymptotically flat for 1/2<k<1 or non-flat for k>1 in the vanishing cosmological constant limit. We study the thermodynamic properties of the solution with two different models and it is shown that thermodynamic quantities satisfy the first law. The behaviour of the heat capacity indicates that by employing the 1+1-dimensiona…
After many years of efforts, the first nonlinearly charged rotating black hole has been finally reported by Garcia-Diaz in two recent works. This is an important result that was pending in General Relativity, since nonlinear generalizations of the Kerr-Newman solution were not yet known. Unfortunately, the Lagrangian supporting this configuration cannot be expressible in terms of the standard invariants using elementary functions. In the present work we circumvent this problem by using the formulations of nonlinear electrodynamics in terms of mixed electromagnetic eigenvalues, introduced by Sa…
We numerically construct static and spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with massive dilaton. The numerical solutions show that the dilaton potential allows many more black hole causal structures than the massless dilaton. We find that depending on the black hole mass and charge and the dilaton mass the black holes can have either one, two, or three horizons. The extremal solutions are also found out. As an interesting peculiarity we note that there are extremal black holes with an inner horizon and with triply degenerated horizon.
We show that the most general stationary electrically charged black-hole solutions of the heterotic string compactified on a (10-D)-torus (where D > 3) can be obtained by using the solution generating transformations of Sen acting on the Myers and Perry metric. The conserved charges labeling these black-hole solutions are the mass, the angular momentum in all allowed commuting planes, and 36-2D electric charges. General properties of these black-holes are also studied.
We study phase transition between electrically charged Ricci-flat black holes and AdS soliton spacetime of Horowitz and Myers in five dimensions. Boundary topology for both of them is $S^1 \times S^1 \times R^2$. We consider Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and R-charged black holes and find that phase transition of these black holes to AdS soliton spacetime depends on the relative size of two boundary circles. We also perform the stability analysis for these black holes. In order to use the AdS/CFT correspondence, we work in the grand canonical ensemble.
We investigate the possibility that the Higgs sector of the Weinberg-Salam model admits the existence of electrically charged, sphaleron states. Evidence is provided through an asymptotic and numerical perturbative analysis about the uncharged sphaleron. By introducing a toy model in two dimensions we demonstrate that such electrically charged, unstable states can exist. Crucially, they can have a comparable mass to their uncharged counterparts and so may also play a role in electroweak baryogenesis, by opening up new channels for baryon number violating processes.
We prove a no Cauchy horizon theorem for general nonlinear electrodynamics black holes with charged scalar hairs. By constructing a radially conserved charged, we show that there is no inner Cauchy horizon for both spherical and planar symmetric cases, independent of the form of scalar potential and nonlinear electrodynamics. After imposing the null energy condition, we are also able to rule out the existence of the Cauchy horizon for the hyperbolic black holes. We take the Born-Infeld black hole as a concrete example to study the interior dynamics beyond the event horizon. When the contributi…
In the present work we study the scale dependence at the level of the effective action of charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell as well as in Einstein-power-Maxwell theories in (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes without a cosmological constant. We allow for scale dependence of the gravitational and electromagnetic couplings, and we solve the corresponding generalized field equations imposing the "null energy condition". Certain properties, such as horizon structure and thermodynamics, are discussed in detail.
Electrically as well as magnetically charged states are constructed in the 2+1-dimensional Euclidean Z_N-Higgs lattice gauge model, the former following ideas of Fredenhagen and Marcu and the latter using duality transformations on the algebra of observables. The existence of electrically and of magnetically charged particles is also established. With this work we prepare the ground for the constructive study of anyonic statistics of multiparticle scattering states of electrically and magnetically charged particles in this model (work in progress).
We investigate the effect of a constant threshold correction to a general non-extreme, static, spherically symmetric, electrically charged black hole solution of the dilatonic Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian, with an arbitrary coupling $β$ between the electromagnetic tensor and the dilaton field. For a small $β$, an exact analytical solution is obtained. For an arbitrary $β$, a close form solution, up to first order in the threshold correction, of the metric and the dilaton are presented. In the extremal limit, the close form solution is reduced to an exact analytical form.
We present a class of Kaluza-Klein electrically charged black p-brane solutions of ten-dimensional, type IIA superstring theory. Uplifting to eleven dimensions these solutions are studied in the context of M-theory. They can be interpreted either as a p+1 extended object trapped around the eleventh dimension along which momentum is flowing or as a boost of the following backgrounds: the Schwarzschild black (p+1)-brane or the product of the (10-p)-dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild manifold with the (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime.
New five-dimensional charged AdS black hole solutions are found in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity and the nonlinear electrodynamics. These solutions include regular black holes as well as extremal black holes. The first law of the black hole thermodynamics is confirmed in the extended phase space where the cosmological constant is treated as the pressure. The first and second order phase transitions are investigated by observing the behavior of the heat capacity at constant pressure and the Gibbs free energy. In addition, the equation of state for the black holes and their $P-V$ criticality are…
We present a new asymptotically flat, doubly spinning black ring of D = 5 Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with Kaluza-Klein dilaton coupling. Besides the mass and two angular momenta, the solution displays both electric charge and (magnetic) dipole charge. The class of solutions that are free from conical singularities is described by four parameters. We first derive the solution in six dimensions employing the inverse scattering method, thereby generalising the inverse-scattering construction by two of the current authors of Emparan's singly spinning dipole black ring. The novel black ring it…
We analyze the properties of asymptotically AdS electrically charged black brane solutions in a consistent truncation of the N=4^+, D=5 Romans' gauged supergravity which contains gravity, SU(2) and U(1) gauge fields, and a dilaton possessing a nontrivial potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. We find that the U(1)\times U(1) solutions become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. These configurations emerge as zero modes of the Abelian solutions at critical temperature and a critical (nonvanishing) ratio of the electric charges and can be viewed as holographic p-wave super…
The Bronnikov model of nonlinear electrodynamics is investigated in general relativity. The magnetic black hole is considered and we obtain a solution giving corrections to the Reissner-Nordström solution. In this model spacetime at $r\rightarrow\infty$ becomes Minkowski's spacetime. We calculate the magnetic mass of the black hole and the metric function. At some parameters of the model there can be one, two or no horizons. The Hawking temperature and the heat capacity of black holes are calculated. We show that a second-order phase transition takes place and black holes are thermodynamically…
We first obtain the $D$-dimensional asymptotically AdS charged black hole solution in general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). We then use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to describe the motion in curved spacetime of a scalar particle and a fermion, which, as we show, satisfy the same Hamilton-Jacobi equation. With absorbing a charged particle, the variation of the generic charged NLED black hole is calculated in the normal and extended phase spaces. In the normal phase space, where the cosmological constant and dimensionful parameters in NLED are fixed, the first and second laws of thermodynamics…
We consider a gravitating system consisting of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential and a U(1) nonlinear electromagnetic field. Solving analytically and numerically the coupled system for both power-law and Born-Infeld type electrodynamics, we find charged hairy black hole solutions. Then, we study the thermodynamics of these solutions and we find that at a low temperature the topological charged black hole with scalar hair is thermodynamically preferred, whereas the topological charged black hole without scalar hair is thermodynamically preferred at a …
Investigating the dynamics of gravitational systems, especially in the regime of quantum gravity, poses a problem of measuring time during the evolution. One of the approaches to this issue is using one of the internal degrees of freedom as a time variable. The objective of our research was to check whether a scalar field or any other dynamical quantity being a part of a coupled multi-component matter-geometry system can be treated as a `clock' during its evolution. We investigated a collapse of a self-gravitating electrically charged scalar field in the Einstein and Brans-Dicke theories using…
We study the effect of a Chern-Simons term on the electrically charged and spinning solitons of several $U(1)$ gauged models in $2+1$ dimensions. These are vortices of complex scalar field theories, both with and without symmetry breaking dynamics, and the $O(3)$ Skyrme model. In all cases the gauge decoupling limits are also considered. It is well known that the effect of the Chern-Simons dynamics is to endow vortices with electric charge $Q_e$ and spin $J$, but our main aim here is to reveal a new feature: that the mass-energy $E$ of the electrically charged vortex can be lower than that of …
Using a modified expression for the electric potential in the context of T-duality (Gaete and Nicolini, Phys. Lett. B, 2022) we obtain an exact charged solution within 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4D EGB) theory of gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant. We show that the solution exists in the regularized 4D EGB theory as well and we point out a correspondence between the black hole solution in 4D EGB theory and the solution in the non-relativistic Horava--Lifshitz theory. The black hole solution is regular and free from singularity and as a special case we recover a class of well-kno…
Extending previous work on the formation and the evaporation of black holes in conformal gravity, in the present paper we study the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric and electrically charged thin shell of radiation. The process creates a singularity-free black hole. Assuming that in the evaporation process the charge $Q$ is constant, the final product of the evaporation is an extremal remnant with $M=Q$, which is reached in an infinite amount of time. We also discuss the issue of singularity and thermodynamics of black holes in Weyl's conformal gravity.
A supersymmetric formulation of the classical action of interacting charged and neutral fermions with arbitrary anomalous magnetic moment is considered. This formulation generalizes the known action for scalar charged particles investigated in papers by Fokker, Schwarzschild, Tetrode, Wheeler and Feynman. The superfield formulation of the electrodynamics of the Maxwell supermultiplet, constructed from the world coordinates of charged or neutral fermions is carried out basing on the proposed action.
Two new families of T-Dual integrable models of dyonic type are constructed. They represent specific $A_n^{(1)}$ singular Non-Abelian Affine Toda models having U(1) global symmetry. Their 1-soliton spectrum contains both neutral and U(1) charged topological solitons sharing the main properties of 4-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs monopoles and dyons. The semiclassical quantization of these solutions as well as the exact counterterms and the coupling constant renormalization are studied.
