In this talk we summarize the top physics setup in the event generator WHIZARD with a main focus on lepton colliders. This includes full six-, eight- and ten-fermion processes, factorized processes and spin correlations. For lepton colliders, QCD NLO processes for top quark physics are available and will be discussed. A special focus is on the top-quark pair threshold, where a special implementation combines a non-relativistic effective field theory calculation augmented by a next-to-leading threshold logarithm resummation with a continuum relativistic fixed-order QCD NLO simulation.
We briefly describe how the Monte Carlo generator WHIZARD 2.2 can be employed to study large QCD effects enhancing the top-antitop production threshold at a next-generation lepton collider. While present state-of-the-art predictions at NNLL order are confined to inclusive total cross sections, our tool can be used to simulate differential distributions including NLL threshold resummation in the production, and with off-shell decaying tops. The new model will be shipped with WHIZARD from version 2.2.3 onwards, to be released along with this article.
We review the current status of the WHIZARD event generator. We discuss, in particular, recent improvements and features that are relevant for simulating the physics program at a future Linear Collider.
We describe the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator WHIZARD for the simulation of high-energy particle physics experiments. Besides the presentation of the general features of the program like SM physics, BSM physics, and QCD effects, special emphasis will be given to the support of the most accurate simulation of the collider environments at hadron colliders and especially at future linear lepton colliders. On the more technical side, the very recent code refactoring towards a completely object-oriented software package to improve maintainability, flexibility and code development will b…
This summarizes the talk given at the LCWS 2019 conference in Sendai, Japan, on the progress of the WHIZARD event generator in terms of new physics features and technical improvements relevant for the physics programme of future lepton and especially linear colliders. It takes as a reference the version 2.8.2 released in October 2019, and also takes into account the development until version 2.8.3 to be released in February 2020.
We describe the universal Monte-Carlo event generator WHIZARD. The program automatically computes complete tree-level matrix elements, integrates them over phase space, evaluates distributions of observables, and generates unweighted event samples that can be used directly in detector simulation. There is no principal limit on the process complexity; using current hardware, the program has successfully been applied to hard scattering processes with up to eight particles in the final state. Matrix elements are computed as helicity amplitudes, so spin and color correlations are retained. The Sta…
I describe the optimizing matrix element generator O'Mega and Wolfgang Kilian's event generator generator WHIZARD. These tools cooperate in the automated production of efficient unweighted event generators for linear collider physics.
We present the status of the automation of NLO processes within the event generator WHIZARD. The program provides an automated FKS subtraction and phase space integration over the FKS regions, while the (QCD) NLO matrix element is accessed via the Binoth Les Houches Interface from an externally linked one-loop program. Massless and massive test cases and validation are shown for several e+e- processes. Furthermore, we discuss work in progress and future plans. The second part covers the matching of the NRQCD prediction with NLL threshold resummation to the NLO continuum top pair production at …
We briefly discuss the current status of NLO QCD automation in the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD. The functionality is presented for the explicit study of off-shell top quark production with associated backgrounds at a lepton collider.
We give a status report on the automation of next-to-leading order processes within the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD, using GoSam and OpenLoops as provider for one-loop matrix elements. To deal with divergences, WHIZARD uses automated FKS subtraction, and the phase space for singular regions is generated automatically. NLO examples for both scattering and decay processes with a focus on e+e- processes are shown. Also, first NLO-studies of observables for collisions of polarized leptons beams, e.g. at the ILC, will be presented. Furthermore, the automatic matching of the fixed-order NLO …
The aim of this thesis is the completion of the NLO automated framework of the MC program WHIZARD, accounting for NLO corrections in the full SM for cross sections and distributions of processes at hadron and lepton colliders. Specifically, it builds on the implemented FKS subtraction scheme for NLO QCD calculations, and extends it to automated NLO EW and QCD-EW mixed corrections. To that end, the implemented FKS scheme is generalised to systematically subtract QED and QCD infrared (IR) divergences in mixed coupling expansions. The automated computation of NLO contributions is validated for a …
We present predictions for $t \bar t$ and $t \bar t H$ production and decay at future lepton colliders including non-resonant and interference contributions up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD. The obtained precision predictions are necessary for a future precise determination of the top-quark Yukawa coupling, and allow for top-quark phenomenology in the continuum at an unprecedented level of accuracy. Simulations are performed with the automated NLO Monte-Carlo framework WHIZARD interfaced to the OpenLoops matrix element generator.
We present an approach to predict exclusive $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production at lepton colliders that correctly describes the top-anti-top threshold as well as the continuum region. We incorporate $t\bar{t}$ form factors for the NLL threshold resummation derived in NRQCD into a factorized relativistic cross section using an extended double-pole approximation, which accounts for fixed-order QCD corrections to the top decays at NLO. This is combined with the full fixed-order QCD result at NLO for $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production to obtain predictions that are not only valid at threshold but smoothly trans…
We present results on NLO electroweak (EW) corrections to multiple massive boson production processes at a future muon collider. Inclusive cross sections with $\mathcal{O}(α)$ corrections for processes for up to four bosons in the final state as well as differential distributions for $HZ$ production are computed for $\sqrt{s}=3$, $10$ and $14$ TeV by using FKS subtraction in the NLO EW automated Monte-Carlo framework WHIZARD+RECOLA. Large logarithmic effects due to collinear ISR and EW virtual correction factors as well as the impacts of an energy cut on hard photons are discussed with an emph…
In the 10^th International Workshop on the CKM Unitarity Triangle, the sessions of the High-p T flavor physics were devoted to the related topics in top quark physics, Higgs physics, semileptonic decays of B mesons and leptoquark searches. This notes summarizes the highlights of discussions on top quark and Higgs physics.
We review the status of heavy flavour physics at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by summarizing recent top quark and B physics results from CDF and DO. In particular we discuss the measurement of the top quark mass and top production cross section as well as B meson lifetimes and time dependent BB= mixing results. An outlook of perspectives for top and B physics in Run II starting in 1999 is also given.
(Report of the Top Physics working group at the 1996 DPF/DPB Snowmass workshop, to appear in the proceedings). We discuss the study of the top quark at future experiments and machines. Top's large mass makes it a unique probe of physics at the natural electroweak scale. We emphasize measurements of the top quark's mass, width, and couplings, as well as searches for rare or nonstandard decays, and discuss the complementary roles played by hadron and lepton colliders.
Top-quark physics has entered the precision era. In this talk we discuss the theoretical ingredients required for a global approach to the complete set of top-quark couplings at NLO accuracy. In particular, recent developments on top-quark flavor-changing neutral couplings are shown as an example. Aspects of flavor-conserving sector will also be discussed.
I summarize here the latest top quark physics results from the ATLAS, CDF, CMS and D0 Collaborations, first discussing the top quark production and then some of the latest top quark property measurements. These results are based on up to 5.4 fb-1 at the Tevatron and up to 1.10 fb-1 at the LHC.
Effective field theories provide a model independent parametrization of the physics beyond the SM if the new degrees of freedom are heavy and complement thus the searches for resonances. In this talk, I will apply this method to the top sector which is expected to play a special role in many BSM scenarios. I will then show the effects of those dimension-six operators on cross-sections and distributions at hadron colliders. Those results together with the present data from the LHC and the Tevatron already constrain the parameter space
We suggest that top physics can be studied at the LHCb experiment, and that top production could be observed. Since LHCb covers a large pseudorapidity region in the forward direction, it has unique abilities to probe new physics in the top sector. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LHCb may be able to measure a t\bar t production rate asymmetry, and thus indirectly probe an anomalous forward backward t\bar t asymmetry in the forward region; a possibility suggested by the enhanced forward-backward asymmetry reported by the CDF experiment.
The Run I experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider discovered the top quark and provided first measurements of many of its properties. Run II (and eventually the LHC and NLC experiments) promise to extend our knowledge of the top quark significantly. Understanding the top quark's large mass, and indeed the origin of all mass, appears to require physics beyond the Standard Model. Thus, the top quark may have unusual properties accessible to upcoming experiments.
This is a brief pedagogic introduction to searches for new physics with top quarks. It covers indirect searches for heavy new particles based on standard model effective theory and direct searches for new signatures of a light hidden sector. LHC and flavor observables complement and strengthen each other in this endeavor.
Perturbative unitarity conditions have been playing an important role by estimating the energy scale of new physics, including the Higgs mass as one of the most important examples. In this letter, we show that there is a possibility to see the hint of a new physics (top quark partner) indirectly by observing an "apparent" unitarity violation in $M_{bw}$ distribution well above top quark mass in a process of a heavy resonance decaying into a pair of top quarks.
We study top quark pair production to probe new physics at the LHC. We propose reconstruction methods for $t\bar{t}$ semileptonic events and use them to reconstruct the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass. The angular distribution of top quarks in their c.m. frame can determine the spin and production subprocess for each new physics resonance. Forward-backward asymmetry and CP-odd variables can be constructed to further delineate the nature of new physics. We parametrize the new resonances with a few generic parameters and show high invariant mass top pair production may provide an early indicator for n…
In this proceedings I discuss the general strategy and impact of tuning Monte-Carlo event generators for physics processes involving top quarks. Special emphasis is put on disinguishing the different usages of event generators in the experiments and the subsequent implications on the tuning process. The current status of determining tune uncertainties is also discussed.
The High-Luminosity LHC is expected to provide $3 ab^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. As a result billions of events containing top quarks will be detected at the CMS and ATLAS experiments, allowing for precise measurements of the top quark properties. The experimental challenges that will be faced in a high luminosity environment, with a special focus on top quark related observables are examined. We discuss prospects for measuring top quark anomalous couplings at the HL-LHC. Projections for detecting flavor changing neutral currents involving top quarks are also reviewed.
After the discovery of the top quark more than 20 years ago, its properties have been studied in great detail both in production and in decay. Increasingly sophisticated experimental results from the Fermilab Tevatron and from Run 1 and Run 2 of the LHC at CERN are complemented by very precise theoretical predictions in the framework of the standard model of particle physics and beyond. In this article the current status of top-quark physics is reviewed, focusing on experimental results, and a perspective of top-quark physics at the LHC and at future colliders is given.
As the heaviest known fundamental particle, the top quark has taken a central role in the study of fundamental interactions. The top quark mass is a fundamental parameter of the standard model which places constraints on the Higgs boson mass and electroweak symmetry breaking. Observations of the relative rates and kinematics of top quark final states may provide constraints for new physics processes. Past and current experimental measurements are presented with a critical view, and a look at the future prospects.
I consider the measurement of the top-quark mass, the CKM matrix element V_{tb}, and the top-quark Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson at the Tevatron, the LHC, and a Linear Collider. The theoretical motivations for these measurements, as well as the experimental possibilities, are discussed.
The production of four top quarks is a rare process in the Standard Model that provides unique opportunities and sensitivity to Standard Model observables including potential enhancement from many popular new physics extensions. This article summarises the latest experimental measurements of the four-top quark production cross section at the LHC. An overview of the interpretations of the experimental results in terms of the top quark Yukawa coupling and limits on physics beyond the Standard Model is also given as well as prospects for future measurements and opportunities offered by this chall…
Top interactions beyond the Standard Model can be conveniently described in the framework of gauge-invariant effective operators. We briefly review the general form of the fermion-fermion-gauge boson and fermion-fermion-Higgs interactions arising from dimension-6 operators, focusing on the top quark. We discuss in detail an expansion in powers of 1/Lambda^2, where Lambda is the new physics scale, to consistently calculate observables in terms of top anomalous couplings.
Linear e+e- colliders provide a rich set of opportunities for top quark physics, crucial for the understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking and for the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. A ttbar threshold scan in e+e- annihilation enables a precise measurement in theoretically well-defined mass schemes with small experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties. Above the production threshold, the efficient identification of top pair events combined with polarized beams provides the potential to extract the form factors for the top quark couplings with high precision and in…
I discuss two aspects of top-quark physics: V_tb and the top-quark mass. The similarities and differences with bottom and charm physics are emphasized.
The top quark has been discovered at FERMILAB last year. The following features of top quark physics will be discussed in this article: the top quark in the standard model production and decay of the top quark in proton collisions (direct evidence for top) virtual effects of top quarks in electroweak observables (indirect evidence for top)
The physics case for studying top-quark physics at the International Linear Collider is well established. This summary places in context the top-quark physics goals, examines the current state-of-the art in understanding of the top-quark mass, and identifies some areas in which the study of the top-quark mass enhances our understanding of new techniques.
The physics perspectives of the production and decay of single top quarks and top quark pairs at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reviewed from a phenomenological point of view.
I review the status of the top quark, and look forward to three topics relevant to future top-quark physics; spin correlation, single-top-quark production, and unification.
We explore constraints on various new physics resonances from four top-quark production based on current experimental data. Both light and heavy resonances are studied in the work. A comparison of full width effect and narrow width approximation is also made.
A brief summary of the current status of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to top quark pair production and the associated production of top anti-top with jet(s) in different configurations, i.e. with one jet, two jets and another top anti-top pair, is presented.
I will briefly review the physics of top quark at high energy colliders. A new discovery of single-top event at the Fermilab Tevatron is expected. At the CERN Large Hadron Collider, detailed top quark properties can be measured and new physics ideas in which top quark plays a special role can be tested. I will also discuss a few phenomenological methods for analyzing experimental data to study top quark interactions.
I review the studies, which were reported after the last Linear Collider Workshop, on top quark physics and QCD physics at a future e+e- linear collider.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is expected to provide proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, yielding millions of of top quark events. The top-physics potential of the two general purpose experiments, ATLAS and CMS, is discussed according to state-of-the-art simulation of both physics and detectors. An overview is given of the most important results with emphasis on the expected improvements in our understanding of physics connected to the top quark.
After a short introduction to effective field theories, most of their features are illustrated using the top decay. The effects of heavy new physics on the top decay are computed and the constraints on the coefficients of the dimension-six operators are derived from the available measurements.
We review some peculiar features of Sudakov expansions in the calculation of electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM at high energy. We give specific examples and consider in particular the process b g -> t W of single top quark production relevant for the top quark physics programme at LHC.
We study the single production of top quarks in $e^+e^-, ep$ and $pp$ collisions in the context of unparticle physics through the Flavor Violating (FV) unparticle vertices and compute the total cross sections for single top production as functions of scale dimension $d_{\U}$. We find that among all, LHC is the most promising facility to probe the unparticle physics via single top quark production processes.
This talk summarizes recent progress in top quark physics studies for high energy linear electron-positron colliders as presented at the LCWS2000 Workshop at Fermilab. New results were presented for top pair production at threshold and in the continuum, as well as for top production at $γγ$ colliders.
Running a future Linear Collider at the top pair threshold allows for precise measurements of the mass, the widths and the couplings of the top quark. I give a nontechnical review on recent theoretical developments and the theory status in top threshold physics concerning QCD corrections and top quark finite lifetime and electroweak effects. I also discuss threshold physics in the context of measurements of the top Yukawa coupling from $e^+e^-\to t\bar t H$ and of squark pair production.
Radiation of gluons gives rise to extra jets in top quark events that can lead to complications in event reconstruction and mass measurement. I review recent results for gluon radiation in top quark production and decay, and discuss their implications for top quark physics.
The status of top quark searches will be briefly reviewed. Theoretical predictions for the top quark decay rate are presented including QCD and electroweak radiative corrections. The possibilities for quarkonium searches at an hadron collider will be discussed. The perspectives for top production at an electron positron collider will be described in detail with emphasis on the behavior of the cross section and decay distribution in the threshold region.
We discuss the possibility of observing CPT violation from top anti-top production in hadronic colliders. We study a general approach by analyzing constraints on the mass difference between the top and anti-top quarks. We present current bounds from Tevatron data, and comment on the prospects for improving these bounds at the LHC and the ILC.
We review the present situation in top quark physics, in these early days of Run II of the LHC. We take mostly a Standard Model perspective, showing recent results, and review the key concepts and results of the associated theoretical predictions. The issues we discuss are the top quark mass, top quark pair and single top production, production in association with other particles, charge asymmetry and top quark decay.
