This paper presents a hardware architecture of complex K-best Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) decoder reducing the complexity of Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector. We develop a novel low-power VLSI design of complex K-best decoder for 8x8 MIMO and 64 QAM modulation scheme. Use of Schnorr-Euchner (SE) enumeration and a new parameter, Rlimit in the design reduce the complexity of calculating K-best nodes to a certain level with increased performance. The total word length of only 16 bits has been adopted for the hardware design limiting the bit error rate (BER) degradation to 0.3 dB with list size, K and Rlimit equal to 4. The proposed VLSI architecture is modeled in Verilog HDL using Xilinx and synthesized using Synopsys Design Vision in 45 nm CMOS technology. According to the synthesize result, it achieves 1090.8 Mbps throughput with power consumption of 782 mW and latency of 0.044 us. The maximum frequency the design proposed is 181.8 MHz.
Classical ML decoders of MIMO systems like the sphere decoder, the Schnorr-Euchner algorithm, the Fano and the stack decoders suffer of high complexity for high number of antennas and large constellation sizes. We propose in this paper a novel sequential algorithm which combines the stack algorithm search strategy and the sphere decoder search region. The proposed decoder that we call the Spherical-Bound-Stack decoder (SB-Stack) can then be used to resolve lattice and large size constellations decoding with a reduced complexity compared to the classical ML decoders. The SB-Stack decoder will b…
The sphere decoder (SD) is an attractive low-complexity alternative to maximum likelihood (ML) detection in a variety of communication systems. It is also employed in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where the computational complexity of the optimum detector grows exponentially with the number of transmit antennas. We propose an enhanced version of the SD based on an additional cost function derived from conditions on worst case interference, that we call dominance conditions. The proposed detector, the king sphere decoder (KSD), has a computational complexity that results to be n…
Orthogonality is a much desired property for MIMO coding. It enables symbol-wise decoding, where the errors in other symbol estimates do not affect the result, thus providing an optimality that is worth pursuing. Another beneficial property is a low complexity soft decision decoder, which for orthogonal complex MIMO codes is known for two transmit (Tx) antennas i.e. for the Alamouti code. We propose novel soft decision decoders for the orthogonal complex MIMO codes on three and four Tx antennas and extend the old result of maximal ratio combining (MRC) to cover all orthogonal codes up to four …
We propose use of QR factorization with sort and Dijkstra's algorithm for decreasing the computational complexity of the sphere decoder that is used for ML detection of signals on the multi-antenna fading channel. QR factorization with sort decreases the complexity of searching part of the decoder with small increase in the complexity required for preprocessing part of the decoder. Dijkstra's algorithm decreases the complexity of searching part of the decoder with increase in the storage complexity. The computer simulation demonstrates that the complexity of the decoder is reduced by the propo…

We study the impact of hardware impairments at the base station (BS) of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink system. We leverage Bussgang's theorem to develop accurate models for the distortions caused by nonlinear low-noise amplifiers, local oscillators with phase noise, and oversampling finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters. By combining the individual effects of these hardware models, we obtain a composite model for the BS-side distortion caused by nonideal hardware that takes into account its…
The optimal diversity-multiplexing-delay tradeoff for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) automatic repeat request (ARQ) channel can be achieved using incremental redundancy lattice space-time codes coupled with a list decoder for joint error detection and correction. Such a decoder is based on the minimum mean-square error lattice decoding principle which is implemented using sphere decoding algorithms. However, sphere decoders suffer from high computational complexity for low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratios, especially for large signal dimensions. In this paper, we would like to construct…
Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), with a large number of distributed access points (APs) that jointly serve the user equipments (UEs), is a promising network architecture for future wireless communications. To reduce the cost and power consumption of such systems, it is important to utilize low-quality transceiver hardware at the APs. However, the impact of hardware impairments on cell-free massive MIMO has thus far not been studied. In this paper, we take a first look at this important topic by utilizing well-established models of hardware distortion and deriving new cl…
Distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) combines the array gain of coherent MIMO processing with the proximity gains of distributed antenna setups. In this paper, we analyze how transceiver hardware impairments affect the downlink with maximum ratio transmission. We derive closed-form spectral efficiencies expressions and study their asymptotic behavior as the number of the antennas increases. We prove a scaling law on the hardware quality, which reveals that massive MIMO is resilient to additive distortions, while multiplicative phase noise is a limiting factor. It is also b…
Transceiver hardware impairments (e.g., phase noise, in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance, amplifier non-linearities, and quantization errors) have obvious degradation effects on the performance of wireless communications. While prior works have improved our knowledge on the influence of hardware impairments of single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems over Rayleigh fading channels, an analysis encompassing the Rician fading channel is not yet available. In this paper, we pursue a detailed analysis of regular and large-scale (LS) MIMO systems over Rician fading channels by…
We consider a multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying system, where multiple pairs of single-antenna devices exchange data with the help of a relay employing a large number of antennas $N$. The relay consists of low-cost components that suffer from hardware impairments. A large-scale approximation of the spectral efficiency (SE) with maximum ratio (MR) processing is derived in closed form, and the approximation is tight as $N \to \infty$. It is revealed that for a fixed hardware quality, the impact of the hardware impairments vanishes asymptotically when $N$ gr…
A major limitation of heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) is the neglect of the additive residual transceiver hardware impairments (ARTHIs). The assumption of perfect hardware is quite strong and results in misleading conclusions. This paper models a general multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) HCN with cell association by incorporating the RTHIs. We derive the coverage probability and shed light on the impact of the ARTHIs, when various transmission methods are applied. As the hardware quality decreases, the coverage probability worsens. Especially, this effect is more severe as the trans…

The design of linear precoders or decoders for multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) modulations in the case of strong channel frequency selectivity is presented. The users and the base station (BS) communicate using space division multiple access (SDMA). The low complexity proposed solution is based on a single tap per-subcarrier precoding/decoding matrix at the base station (BS) in the downlink/uplink. As opposed to classical approaches that assume flat channel frequency selectivity at the subcarrier level, the BS does not make this assumption an…
Massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are one possible key technology for next generation wireless communication systems. Claims have been made that massive MU-MIMO will increase both the radiated energy efficiency as well as the sum-rate capacity by orders of magnitude, because of the high transmit directivity. However, due to the very large number of transceivers needed at each base-station (BS), a successful implementation of massive MU-MIMO will be contingent on of the availability of very cheap, compact and power-efficient radio and digital-processing hardw…
We propose in this work to employ the Box-LASSO, a variation of the popular LASSO method, as a low-complexity decoder in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system. The Box-LASSO is mainly useful for detecting simultaneously structured signals such as signals that are known to be sparse and bounded. One modulation technique that generates essentially sparse and bounded constellation points is the so-called generalized space-shift keying (GSSK) modulation. In this direction, we derive high dimensional sharp characterizations of various performance measures of …

In this paper, we investigate the effect of hardware impairments on multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way full-duplex relay systems with amplify-and-forward scheme. More specifically, novel closed-form approximate expressions for the spectral efficiency are derived to obtain some important insights into the practical design of the considered system. The exact average complexity analysis of the basic sphere decoder for general space-time codes applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channel is known to be difficult. In this work, we shed the light on the computational complexity of sphere decoding for the quasi-static, LAttice Space-Time (LAST) coded MIMO channel. Specifically, we drive an upper bound of the tail distribution of the decoder's computational complexity. We show that, when the computational complexity exceeds a certain limit, this upper bound becomes dominated by the outage probability achieved by LAST codin…
We propose a scalable video broadcasting scheme over MIMO-OFDM systems. The scalable video source layers are channel encoded and modulated into independent signal streams, which are then transmitted from the allocated antennas in certain time-frequency blocks. Each receiver employs the successive group decoder to decode the signal streams of interest by treating other signal streams as interference. The transmitter performs adaptive coding and modulation, and transmission antenna and subcarrier allocation, based on the rate feedback from the receivers. We also propose a hybrid receiver that sw…
This paper studies the massive MIMO full-duplex relaying (MM-FDR), where multiple source-destination pairs communicate simultaneously with the help of a common full-duplex relay equipped with very large antenna arrays. Different from the traditional MM-FDR protocol, a general model where sources/destinations are allowed to equip with multiple antennas is considered. In contrast to the conventional MIMO system, massive MIMO must be built with low-cost components which are prone to hardware impairments. In this paper, the effect of hardware impairments is taken into consideration, and is modeled…
The work identifies the first general, explicit, and non-random MIMO encoder-decoder structures that guarantee optimality with respect to the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT), without employing a computationally expensive maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver. Specifically, the work establishes the DMT optimality of a class of regularized lattice decoders, and more importantly the DMT optimality of their lattice-reduction (LR)-aided linear counterparts. The results hold for all channel statistics, for all channel dimensions, and most interestingly, irrespective of the particular lattice-code a…
In this paper we address the linear precoding and decoding design problem for a bidirectional orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM) communication system, between two multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) nodes. The effects of hardware distortion as well as the channel state information error are taken into account. In the first step, we transform the available time-domain characterization of the hardware distortions for FD MIMO transceivers to the frequency domain, via a linear Fourier transformation. As a result, the explicit impact of hardware inaccuracies on the …
This paper analyzes how the distortion created by hardware impairments in a multiple-antenna base station affects the uplink spectral efficiency (SE), with focus on Massive MIMO. The distortion is correlated across the antennas, but has been often approximated as uncorrelated to facilitate (tractable) SE analysis. To determine when this approximation is accurate, basic properties of the distortion correlation are first uncovered. Then, we focus on third-order non-linearities and prove analytically and numerically that the correlation can be neglected in the SE analysis when there are many user…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are cellular networks where the base stations (BSs) are equipped with unconventionally many antennas. Such large antenna arrays offer huge spatial degrees-of-freedom for transmission optimization; in particular, great signal gains, resilience to imperfect channel knowledge, and small inter-user interference are all achievable without extensive inter-cell coordination. The key to cost-efficient deployment of large arrays is the use of hardware-constrained base stations with low-cost antenna elements, as compared to today's expensive and powe…
The 3D MIMO code is a robust and efficient space-time block code (STBC) for the distributed MIMO broadcasting but suffers from high maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding complexity. In this paper, we first analyze some properties of the 3D MIMO code to show that the 3D MIMO code is fast-decodable. It is proved that the ML decoding performance can be achieved with a complexity of O(M^{4.5}) instead of O(M^8) in quasi static channel with M-ary square QAM modulations. Consequently, we propose a simplified ML decoder exploiting the unique properties of 3D MIMO code. Simulation results show that the pro…
In this paper, the asymptotic performance of the lattice sequential decoder for LAttice Space-Time (LAST) coded MIMO channel is analyzed. We determine the rates achievable by lattice coding and sequential decoding applied to such a channel. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) under lattice sequential decoding is derived as a function of its parameter---the bias term, which is critical for controlling the amount of computations required at the decoding stage. Achieving low decoding complexity requires increasing the value of the bias term. However, this is done at the expense of losing th…
The 3D MIMO code is a robust and efficient space-time coding scheme for the distributed MIMO broadcasting. However, it suffers from the high computational complexity if the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding is used. In this paper we first investigate the unique properties of the 3D MIMO code and consequently propose a simplified decoding algorithm without sacrificing the ML optimality. Analysis shows that the decoding complexity is reduced from O(M^8) to O(M^{4.5}) in quasi-static channels when M-ary square QAM constellation is used. Moreover, we propose an efficient implementation of t…

The setup allows sampling in both spatial and spectral domains at rates much lower than dictated by the Nyquist sampling theorem. Our prototype realizes an X-band MIMO radar that can be configured to have a maximum of 8 transmit and 10 receive antenna elements. We use frequency division multiplexing (FDM) to achieve the orthogonality of MIMO waveforms and apply the Xampling framework for signal recovery. The prototype al…
Large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems can bring substantial improvement in spectral efficiency and/or energy efficiency, due to the excessive degrees-of-freedom and huge array gain. However, large-scale MIMO is expected to deploy lower-cost radio frequency (RF) components, which are particularly prone to hardware impairments. Unfortunately, compensation schemes are not able to remove the impact of hardware impairments completely, such that a certain amount of residual impairments always exists. In this paper, we investigate the impact of residual transmit RF i…
Rate-Splitting (RS) has recently been shown to provide significant performance benefits in various multi-user transmission scenarios. In parallel, the huge degrees-of-freedom provided by the appealing massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) necessitate the employment of inexpensive hardware, being more prone to hardware imperfections, in order to be a cost-efficient technology. Hence, in this work, we focus on a realistic massive Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) hampered by the inevitable hardware impairments. We consider a general experimentally validated model…
This paper analyzes how the distortion created by hardware impairments in a multiple-antenna base station affects the uplink spectral efficiency (SE), with focus on Massive MIMO. This distortion is correlated across the antennas, but has been often approximated as uncorrelated to facilitate (tractable) SE analysis. To determine when this approximation is accurate, basic properties of distortion correlation are first uncovered. Then, we separately analyze the distortion correlation caused by third-order non-linearities and by quantization. Finally, we study the SE numerically and show that the …
Radio-frequency (RF) impairments in the transceiver hardware of communication systems (e.g., phase noise (PN), high power amplifier (HPA) nonlinearities, or in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance) can severely degrade the performance of traditional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Although calibration algorithms can partially compensate these impairments, the remaining distortion still has substantial impact. Despite this, most prior works have not analyzed this type of distortion. In this paper, we investigate the impact of residual transceiver hardware impairments on the MIM…
In this paper, the filter-and-forward (FF) relay design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is considered. Due to the considered MIMO structure, the problem of joint design of the linear MIMO transceiver at the source and the destination and the FF relay at the relay is considered. As the design criterion, the minimization of weighted sum mean-square-error (MSE) is considered first, and the joint design in this case is approached based on alternating optimization that iterates between optimal design of the FF relay for a given set…
The deployment of massive MIMO systems has revived much of the interest in the study of the large-system performance of multiuser detection systems. In this paper, we prove a non-trivial upper bound on the bit-error rate (BER) of the MAP detector for BPSK signal transmission and equal-power condition. In particular, our bound is approximately tight at high-SNR. The proof is simple and relies on Gordon's comparison inequality. Interestingly, we show that under the assumption that Gordon's inequality is tight, the resulting BER prediction matches that of the replica method under the replica symm…
The maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder for symbol detection in large multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication systems is typically computationally prohibitive. In this paper, we study a popular and practical alternative, namely the Box-relaxation optimization (BRO) decoder, which is a natural convex relaxation of the ML. For iid real Gaussian channels with additive Gaussian noise, we obtain exact asymptotic expressions for the symbol error rate (SER) of the BRO. The formulas are particularly simple, they yield useful insights, and they allow accurate comparisons to the matched-filter…
This paper considers several linear beamformer design paradigms for multiuser time-invariant multiple-input multiple-output interference channels. Notably, interference alignment and sum-rate based algorithms such as the maximum signal-to-interference-plus noise (max-SINR) algorithm are considered. Optimal linear beamforming under interference alignment consists of two layers; an inner precoder and decoder (or receive filter) accomplish interference alignment to eliminate inter-user interference, and an outer precoder and decoder diagonalize the effective single-user channel resulting from the…
In Massive MIMO base stations (BSs), the hardware design needs to balance high spectral efficiency (SE) with low complexity. In particular, the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have an important impact on signal distortion and power consumption. This article addresses the fundamental problem of selecting the optimal hardware quality in the Massive MIMO space. In particular, we examine the optimal HWI and ADC bit allocation per BS antenna to maximize the SE. The result…
This paper presents an efficient hardware design approach for list successive cancellation (LSC) decoding of polar codes. By applying path-overlapping scheme, the l instances of (l > 1) successive cancellation (SC) decoder for LSC with list size l can be cut down to only one. This results in a dramatic reduction of the hardware complexity without any decoding performance loss. We also develop novel approaches to reduce the latencyassociated with the pipeline scheme. Simulation results show that with proposed design approach the hardware efficiency is increased significantly over the recently p…
The use of large-scale antenna arrays can bring substantial improvements in energy and/or spectral efficiency to wireless systems due to the greatly improved spatial resolution and array gain. Recent works in the field of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) show that the user channels decorrelate when the number of antennas at the base stations (BSs) increases, thus strong signal gains are achievable with little inter-user interference. Since these results rely on asymptotics, it is important to investigate whether the conventional system models are reasonable in this asymptotic regi…
Typical receiver processing, targeting always the best achievable bit error rate performance, can result in a waste of resources, especially, when the transmission conditions are such that the best performance is orders of magnitude better than the required. In this work, a processing framework is proposed which allows adjusting the processing requirements to the transmission conditions and the required bit error rate. It applies a-posteriori probability receivers operating over multiple-input multiple-output channels. It is demonstrated that significant complexity savings can be achieved both…
Despite the deleterious effect of hardware impairments on communication systems, most prior works have not investigated their impact on widely used relay systems. Most importantly, the application of inexpensive transceivers, being prone to hardware impairments, is the most cost-efficient way for the implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Consequently, the direction of this paper is towards the investigation of the impact of hardware impairments on MIMO relay networks with large number of antennas. To keep the hardware costs of future communications systems manageable, the use of low-cost hardware components is desirable. This is particularly true for the emerging massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems which equip base stations (BSs) with a large number of antenna elements. However, low-cost transceiver designs will further accentuate the hardware impairments which are present in any practical communication system. In this paper, we investigate the impact of hardware impairments on the secrecy performance of downlink massive MIMO systems in the presence of a passive multip…
This paper addresses the problem of designing LDPC decoders robust to transient errors introduced by a faulty hardware. We assume that the faulty hardware introduces errors during the message passing updates and we propose a general framework for the definition of the message update faulty functions. Within this framework, we define symmetry conditions for the faulty functions, and derive two simple error models used in the analysis. With this analysis, we propose a new interpretation of the functional Density Evolution threshold previously introduced, and show its limitations in case of highl…
Polar codes, discovered by Arıkan, are the first error-correcting codes with an explicit construction to provably achieve channel capacity, asymptotically. However, their error-correction performance at finite lengths tends to be lower than existing capacity-approaching schemes. Using the successive-cancellation algorithm, polar decoders can be designed for very long codes, with low hardware complexity, leveraging the regular structure of such codes. We present an architecture and an implementation of a scalable hardware decoder based on this algorithm. This design is shown to scale to code le…
Massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless systems operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies enable simultaneous wideband data transmission to a large number of users. In order to reduce the complexity of MU precoding in all-digital basestation architectures, we propose a two-stage precoding architecture that first performs precoding using a sparse matrix in the beamspace domain, followed by an inverse fast Fourier transform that converts the result to the antenna domain. The sparse precoding matrix requires a small number of multipliers and enables regular ha…

This paper presents the current state-of-the-art of massive antenna array architectures with significant front-end hardware savings, as an enabler for future small and powerful cell nodes that will be able to carry massive MIMO technology. Radio frequency (RF) hardware architectures with a single power amplifier are reviewed, compared, and found superior to conventional MIMO implementations in terms of cost, dissipated heat, and physical size. This progress on the RF-side allows to merge the two competing cellular concepts of virtual and massive MIMO into a hybrid approach of remote radio head…
Radio frequency (RF) chain circuits play a major role in digital receiver architectures, allowing passband communication signals to be processed in baseband. When operating at high frequencies, these circuits tend to be costly. This increased cost imposes a major limitation on future multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication technologies. A common approach to mitigate the increased cost is to utilize hybrid architectures, in which the received signal is combined in analog into a lower dimension, thus reducing the number of RF chains. In this work we study the design and hardware impl…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are cellular networks where the base stations (BSs) are equipped with unconventionally many antennas, deployed on co-located or distributed arrays. Huge spatial degrees-of-freedom are achieved by coherent processing over these massive arrays, which provide strong signal gains, resilience to imperfect channel knowledge, and low interference. This comes at the price of more infrastructure; the hardware cost and circuit power consumption scale linearly/affinely with the number of BS antennas $N$. Hence, the key to cost-efficient deployment of …
