Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayers have attracted much attention for their novel optical properties and efficient light-matter interactions. When excited by incident laser, the optical response of MoS2 monolayers was effectively modified by elementary photo-excited excitons owing to their large exciton binding energy, which can be facilitated for the optical-controllable exciton-plasmon interactions. Inspired by this concept, we experimentally investigated active light control of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in MoS2-Ag hybrid nanostructures. The white light spectra of SPR were gradually red-shifted by increasing laser power, which was distinctly different from the one of bare Ag nanostructure. This spectroscopic tunability can be further controlled by near-field coupling strength and polarization state of light, and selectively applied to the control of plasmonic dark mode. An analytical Lorentz model for photo-excited excitons induced modulation of MoS2 dielectric function was developed to explain the insight physics of this SPR tunability. Our study opens new possibilities to the development of all-optical controlled nanophotonic devices based on 2D materials.
Nanostructured metal surfaces comprised of periodically arranged spherical voids are grown by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled template. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity reveal the spectral dispersion, from which we identify the presence of both delocalized Bragg- and localized Mie-plasmons. These couple strongly producing bonding and anti-bonding mixed plasmons with anomalous dispersion properties. Appropriate plasmon engineering of the void morphology selects the plasmon spatial and spectral positions, allowing these plasmonic crys…
Interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and molecules is modeled based on the concept of quantized optical cavity for surface enhanced Raman scattering process. We have found that the background emission from plasmonic nanostructures is not constant as speculated ordinarily, it is enhanced accompanying with the molecules Raman scattering. The plasmonic nanostructures not only scatter elastically the energy coupling from the molecules excited states, but also radiate it inelastically as surface plasmon emission partly resulting an enhanced background. According to single nanoparticle exper…
Using a hydrodynamic model of the free electron gas of metal, we theoretically investigate optically-induced DC current loops in a plasmonic nanostructure. Such current loops originate from an optical rectification process relying on three electromotive forces, one of which arises from an optical spin-orbit interaction. The resulting static magnetic field is found to be maximum and dramatically confined at the corners of the plasmonic nanostructure, which reveals the ability of metallic discontinuities to concentrate and tailor static magnetic fields on the nanoscale.
We derive and present systematic relationships between the analytical formulas for calculation of the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) of some plasmonic nano-structures which we have categorized as simple. These relationships, including some new formulas, are summarized in a tree diagram which highlights the core-shell plasmons as the generators of solid and cavity plasmons. In addition, we show that the LSPR of complex structures can be reduced to that of simpler ones, using the LSPR of a nanorice as a case study, in the dipole limit. All the formulas were derived using a combinati…
Presented here are studies of the impact of excitation angle on surface enhanced Raman and luminescence spectroscopy of dye immobilised on a plasmon active nanocavity array support. Results show that both Raman and luminescence intensities depend on the angle of incidence consistent with the presence of cavity supported plasmon modes. Dependence of scattering or emission intensity with excitation angle occurs over the window of observation.
We demonstrate that the fluorescent emitters can increase light emission from the plasmonic nanostructures in turn. With the help of atomic force microscopy, a hybrid system consisting of a fluorescent nanodiamond and a gold nanoparticle was assembled step-by-step for in situ optical measurements. We found that the emission from the nanoparticle increased compared with that before coupling. The interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and fluorescent emitter was understood as an entity based on the concept of a quantized optical cavity by considering the nanodiamond and the nanoparticle as…
We study how the collective effects of nanoparticles arranged in rectangular arrays influence their temporal plasmon response and field enhancement property. By systematically changing the lattice constant for arrays containing identical metal nanorods, we experimentally demonstrate how grating induced effects affect the position and, more importantly, the broadening of extinction spectra. We correlate these effects with the achievable field enhancement and the temporal duration of plasmon transients and formulate criteria for the generation of enhanced few-cycle localized plasmon oscillations…
In this paper, we describe the implementation of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) to probe the chirality of plasmonic nanostructures. We demonstrate experimentally spin-driven directional coupling as well as vortex generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by nanostructures built with T-shaped and $Λ$- shaped apertures. Using this far-field method, quantitative inspections, including directivity and extinction ratio measurements, are achieved via polarization analysis in both image and Fourier planes. To support our experimental findings, we develop an analytical model based on a multi…
The search for miniaturized components for nonlinear optical processes needs a way to overcome the efficiency loss due to the effective size reduction of the active medium. We investigate here a combination of a nanosized nonlinear dielectric crystal and metallic nanoantennas that benefits from both the intrinsic nonlinear conversion efficiency of the nonlinear medium and the local-field enhancement of plasmonic resonances in metallic nanostructures. Careful comparison between experiments and numerical simulations reveals that the observed 10 to 1000 fold enhancement in Second Harmonic Generat…
We present a semiclassical model for plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the vicinity of metal nanostructures. We show that both the inhomogeneity of the enhanced local fields and electron absorption by the metal surface play an important role in the HHG process and lead to the generation of even harmonics and to a significantly increased cutoff. For the examples of silver-coated nanocones and bowtie antennas we predict that the required intensity reduces by up to three orders of magnitudes and the HHG cutoff increases by more than a factor of two. The study of the enhanced high…
We present a rigorous finite element method to calculate circular dichroism (CD) in various systems consisting of nanostructures and oriented chiral molecules with electric quadrupole transitions. The interaction between oriented molecule materials, which are regarded as anisotropic chiral media, and metallic nanostructures has been investigated. Our results show that the plasmon-induced CD is sensitive to the orientations of the molecules. In many cases, the contribution of molecular electric quadrupole transitions to the total CD signal can play a key role. More interesting, we have demonstr…

In this work, starting from basic theories, we present a review of research progress in near-field optical manipulation techniques based on metallic nanostructures, with an emphasis on some of the most promising advances in molecular technology, such as the precise con…
We present a theoretical study of the characteristics of the nonlinear spin-orbital angular momentum coupling induced by second-harmonic generation in plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures made of centrosymmetric materials. In particular, the connection between the phase singularities and polarization helicities in the longitudinal components of the fundamental and second-harmonic optical fields and the scatterer symmetry properties are discussed. By in-depth comparison between the interaction of structured optical beams with plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures, we have found that all-di…
In this work, we report numerical simulations and experiments of the optical response of a gold nanostrip embedded in a silicon strip waveguide gap at telecom wavelengths. We show that the spectral features observed in transmission and reflection when the metallic nanostructure is inserted in the gap are extremely different to those observed in free-space excitation. First, we find that interference between the guided field and the electric dipolar resonance of the metallic nanostructure results in high-contrast (> 10) spectral features showing an asymmetric Fano spectral profile. Secondly, we…
We study and actively control the coherent properties of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) optically exited on a nano-hole array. Amplitude and phase of the optical excitation are externally controlled via a digital spatial light modulator (SLM) and SPP interference fringe patterns are observed with high contrast. Our interferometric observations revel SPPs dressed with the Bloch modes of the periodic nano-structure. The momentum associated with these Dressed Plasmons (DP) is highly dependent on the grating period and fully matches our theoretical predictions. We show that the momentum of DP w…
We develop a quantum-mechanical theory for Landau damping of surface plasmons in metal nanostructures larger that the characteristic length for nonlocal effects. We show that the electron surface scattering, which facilitates plasmon decay in small nanostructures, can be incorporated into the metal dielectric function on par with phonon and impurity scattering. The derived surface scattering rate is determined by the plasmon local field polarization relative to the metal-dielectric interface and is highly sensitive to the system geometry. We illustrate our model by providing analytical results…
Plasmonic and Mie resonances in subwavelength nanostructures provide an efficient way to manipulate light below the diffraction limit that has fostered the growth of plasmonics and nanophotonics. Plasmonic resonances have been mainly related with the excitation of free charge carriers, initially in metals, and Mie resonances have been identified in Si nanostructures. Remarkably, although much less studied, semi-metals, semiconductors and topological insulators of the p-block enable plasmonic resonances without free charge carriers and Mie resonances with enhanced properties compared with Si. I…
We propose a novel method to enhance the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in the magneto-plasmonic (MP) nanostructures by means of the active dielectric layer. We report the theoretical analysis of the magnetoplasmonic structure with a ferromagnetic dielectric doped with rear-earth ions (Nd3+) as the example of a gain layer. The enhancement takes place near the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonances of the nanostructures. The stimulated emission of the dopants in the field of SPP wave partially compensates its losses. It is shown that due to a decrease of SPP damping a Q-fact…
The strength of light emission near metallic nanostructures can scale anomalously with frequency and dimensionality. We find that light-matter interactions in plasmonic systems confined in two dimensions (e.g., near metal nanowires) strengthen with decreasing frequency owing to strong mode confinement away from the surface plasmon frequency. The anomalous scaling also applies to the modulation speed of plasmonic light sources, including lasers, with modulation bandwidths growing at lower carrier frequencies. This allows developing optical devices that exhibit simultaneously femto-second respon…
We report an experimental study of the plasmon-assisted spontaneous emission and the Förster resonance energy transfer between organic molecules and semiconductor colloidal quantum dots. The localized plasmonic field in the nanogap between a gold nano-popcorn's tips and a 5-nm separated gold film supports high photonic density of states and provides pathways for the light-matter interaction mechanisms. We demonstrate that, besides the total spontaneous emission rate enhancement factor up to 66 for quantum dots and molecules, the Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency and rate constant ar…
The spectral response of a plasmonic nanostructure may heavily depend on the refractive index of its surroundings. The key idea of this paper is to control this response by coherent optical means, i.e. with an optically controlled electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium. In such environment, an external laser provides a knob to shift the position of plasmonic resonances without the need to change the geometry of the nanostructure. Additionally, the setup can be exploited to excite narrow-band surface plasmon polaritons.
We present a comprehensive review of recent developments in the field of chiral plasmonics. Significant advances have been made recently in understanding the working principles of chiral plasmonic structures. With advances in micro- and nanofabrication techniques, a variety of chiral plasmonic nanostructures have been experimentally realized; these tailored chiroptical properties vastly outperform those of their molecular counterparts. We focus on chiral plasmonic nanostructures created using bottom-up approaches, which not only allow for rational design and fabrication but most intriguingly i…
We consider periodic arrangements of metal nanostructures and study the effect of periodicity on the localised surface plasmon resonance of the structures within an electrostatic eigenmode approximation. We show that within this limit, the collective surface plasmon resonances of the periodic structures can be expressed in terms of superpositions of the eigenmodes of uncoupled nanostructures that exhibit a standing--wave character delocalised across the entire periodic structure. The formalism derived successfully enables the design and accounts for the observation of plasmonic edge-states in …
We present a quantum-mechanical model for surface-assisted carrier excitation by optical fields in plasmonic nanostructures of arbitrary shape. We derive an explicit expression, in terms of local fields inside the metal structure, for surface absorbed power and surface scattering rate that determine the enhancement of carrier excitation efficiency near the metal-dielectric interface. We show that surface scattering is highly sensitive to the local field polarization, and can be incorporated into metal dielectric function along with phonon and impurity scattering. We also show that the obtained…
Trapping light in open cavities is a long sought "holy grail" of nanophotonics. Plasmonic materials may offer a unique opportunity in this context, as they may fully suppress the radiation loss and enable the observation of spatially localized light states with infinite lifetime in an open system. Here, we investigate how the spatial dispersion effects, e.g., caused by the electron-electron interactions in a metal, affect the trapped eigenstates. Heuristically, one may expect that the repulsive-type electron-electron interactions should act against light localization, and thereby that they sho…
Over the last three decades, plasmonics using metallic nanostructures has become central to nanophotonics research. Recently, its targets have been extended to nonlinear optical phenomena. In a nonlinear regime, quantum mechanical effects, as exemplified by electron spill-out on the surface of nanostructures, significantly influence the optical response. Quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) is a promising basis for the analysis of nonlinear optical responses involving such quantum mechanical effects. Herein, QHT was applied to calculate the third-order optical nonlinearity of a spherical metallic…
The use of magneto-optical techniques to tune the plasmonic response of nanostructures is a hot topic in active plasmonics, with fascinating implications for several plasmon-based applications and devices. For this emerging field, called magnetoplasmonics, plasmonic nanomaterials with strong optical response to magnetic field are desired, which is generally challenging to achieve with pure noble metals. To overcome this issue, several efforts have been carried out to design and tailor the magneto-optical response of metal nanostructures, mainly by combining plasmonic and magnetic materials in …
We develop a theory for spontaneous decay of a quantum emitter (QE) situated near metal-dielectric structure supporting localized surface plasmons. If plasmon resonance is tuned close to the QE emission frequency, the emission is enhanced due to energy transfer from the QE to a localized plasmon mode followed by photon emission by plasmonic antenna. The emission rate is determined by intimate interplay between the plasmon coupling to radiation field and the Ohmic losses in metal. Here we develop plasmon Green's function approach that includes plasmon's interaction with radiation to obtain expl…
A significant interest in combining plasmonics and magnetism at the nanoscale gains momentum in both photonics and magnetism sectors that are concerned with the resonant enhancement of light-magnetic-matter interaction in nanostructures. These efforts result in a considerable amount of literature, which is difficult to collect and digest in limited time. Furthermore, there is insufficient exchange of results between the two research sectors. Consequently, the goal of this review paper is to bridge this gap by presenting an overview of recent progress in the field of magneto-plasmonics from two…
Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies in open wave systems where at least two energy levels and their corresponding eigenstates coalesce. We report evidence of the existence of EPs in 3D plasmonic nanostructures. The systems are composed of coupled plasmonic nanoresonators and can be judiciously and systematically driven to EPs by controlling symmetry-compatible modes via their near-field and far-field interactions. The proposed platform opens the way to the investigation of EPs for enhanced light-matter interactions and applications in communication, sensing and imaging.
Advanced nanophotonics penetrates into other areas of science and technology, ranging from applied physics to biology and resulting in many fascinating cross-disciplinary applications. It has been recently demonstrated that suitably engineered light-matter interactions at the nanoscale can overcome the limitations of today's terahertz (THz) photoconductive antennas, making them one step closer to many practical implications. Here we push forward this concept by comprehensive numerical optimization and experimental investigation of a log-periodic THz photoconductive antenna coupled to a silver …
We propose a novel deterministic protocol, based on continuous light flows, that enables us to control the concentration of light in generic plasmonic nanostructures. Based on an exact inversion of the response tensor of the nanosystem, the so-called Deterministic Optical Inversion (DOPTI) protocol provides a physical solution for the incident field leading to a desired near field pattern, expressed in the form of a coherent superposition of high order beams. We demonstrate the high degree of control achieved on complex plasmonic architectures and quantify its efficiency and accuracy.
We experimentally demonstrate the use of subwavelength optical nanoantennae to assist the gentle ablation of nanostructures directly using ultralow fluence from a Ti: sapphire oscillator through the excitation of surface plasmon waves. We show that this ablation mechanism is the same for metal and dielectric. The analytical solutions of ablation threshold are in excellent agreement with the experiment estimations. Surface plasmon assisted locally enhanced ablation at nanoscale provides a method for nanomachining, manipulation and modification the nanostructures without collateral thermal damag…
We present experimental evidence of plasmonic-enhanced optical tweezers, of polystyrene beads in deionized water in the vicinity of metal-coated nanostructures. The optical tweezers operate with a continuous wave (CW) near-infrared laser. We employ a Cu/Au bilayer that significantly improves dissipation of heat generated by the trapping laser beam and avoid de-trapping from heat convection currents. We investigate the improvement of the optical trapping force, the effective trapping quality factor, and observe an exponential distance dependence of the trapping force from the nanostructures, ex…

When circularly polarized light interacts with a nanostructure, the optical response depends on the geometry of the structure. If the nanostructure is chiral (i.e., it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image), then its optical response, both in near-field and far-field, depends on the handedness of the incident light. In contrast, achiral structures exhibit identical far-field responses for left- and right-circular polarization. Here, we show that a perfectly achiral nanostructure, a plasmonic metamolecule with trigonal D3h symmetry, exhibits a near-field response that is sensitive to the h…
Graphene is a unique material to study fundamental limits of plasmonics. Apart from the ultimate single-layer thickness, its carrier concentration can be tuned by chemical doping or applying an electric field. In this manner the electrodynamic properties of graphene can be varied from highly conductive to dielectric. Graphene supports strongly confined, propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a broad spectral range from terahertz to mid-infrared frequencies. It also possesses a strong magneto-optical response and thus provides complimentary architectures to conventional magneto-plasmo…
We show theoretically that coherent light can be completely absorbed in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional metallic nanostructure by matching the frequency and field pattern of an incident wave to that of a localized surface plasmon resonance. This can be regarded as critical coupling to a nano-plasmonic cavity, or as an extension of the concept of time-reversed laser to the spaser. Light scattering is completely suppressed via impedance matching to the nano-objects, and the energy of incoming wave is fully transferred to surface plasmon oscillations and evanescent electromagnetic fields. …
We aim to clarify the role that absorption plays in nonlinear optical processes in a variety of metallic nanostructures and show how it relates to emission and conversion efficiency. We define a figure of merit that establishes the structure's ability to either favor or impede second harmonic generation. Our findings suggest that, despite the best efforts embarked upon to enhance local fields and light coupling via plasmon excitation, nearly always the absorbed harmonic energy far surpasses the harmonic energy emitted in the far field. Qualitative and quantitative understanding of absorption p…
Plasmon-induced-transparency (PIT) in nanostructures has been intensively investigated, however, no existing metasurface nanostructure exhibits all-optically tunable properties, where the number of transparency windows can be tuned successively, and switched to off-state. Here, we theoretically investigate and demonstrate dynamically tunable, multichannel PIT at optical frequencies. The inplane destructive interference between bright and dark dipolar resonances in coupled plasmonic nanobar topologies is exploited to produce tunable PIT with unique characteristics. In particular, we demonstrate…

We demonstrate propagation of plasmons in single crystalline silver nanostructures fabricated using a combination of a bottom-up and a top-down approach. Silver nanoplates of thickness around 65 nm and a surface area of about 100 μm^2 are made using a wet chemical method. Silver nanotips and nanowires are then sculptured by focused ion beam milling. The plasmons are excited by using the fluorescence from the redeposited silver clusters during the milling process. Propagation of plasmons in the nanowires is observed in the visible spectral region. We also observe a cavity effect by measuring th…
Spectroscopic analysis of large biomolecules is critical in a number of applications, including medical diagnostics and label-free biosensing. Recently, it has been shown that Raman spectroscopy of proteins can be used to diagnose some diseases, including a few types of cancer. These experiments have however been performed using traditional Raman spectroscopy and the development of the Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assays suitable for large biomolecules could lead to a substantial decrease in the amount of specimen necessary for these experiments. We present a new method to achiev…
Optical response of free-electron gas leads to inherent nonlinear optical behaviour of nanostructured plasmonic materials enabled via both strong local field enhancements and inherent complex electron dynamics. We present a comprehensive treatment of microscopic polarization of conduction electrons in the time-domain using full hydrodynamic description which allows self-consistent modelling of linear and nonlinear response and multiple harmonics generation. The effects of convective acceleration, magnetic contribution of the Lorenz force, quantum electron pressure, and nanostructures boundarie…
We use frequency entangled photons, generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion, to measure the broadband spectral response of an array of gold nanoparticles exhibiting Fano-type plasmon resonance. Refractive index sensing of a liquid is performed by measuring the shift of the array resonance. This method is robust in excessively noisy conditions compared with conventional broadband transmission spectroscopy. Detection of a refractive index change is demonstrated with a noise level 70 times higher than the signal, which is shown to be inaccessible with the conventional transmission sp…
Silver is considered to be the king among plasmonic materials because it features low inelastic absorption in the visible and infrared (vis-IR) spectral regions compared to other metals. In contrast, copper is commonly regarded as being too lossy for plasmonic applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate vis-IR plasmons in long copper nanowires (NWs) with quality factors that exceed a value of 60, as determined by spatially resolved, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements. We explain this counterintuitive result by the fact that plasmons in these metal wires…
The Fano and Rabi models represent remarkably common effects in optics. Here we study the coherent time dynamics of plasmonic systems exhibiting Fano and Rabi resonances. We demonstrate that these systems show fundamentally different dynamics. A system with a Fano resonance displays at most one temporal beat under pulsed excitation, whereas a system in the Rabi regime may have any number of beats. Remarkably, the Fano-like systems show time dynamics with very characteristic coherent tails despite the strong decoherence that is intrinsic for such systems. The coherent Fano and Rabi dynamics tha…
