Silver is considered to be the king among plasmonic materials because it features low inelastic absorption in the visible and infrared (vis-IR) spectral regions compared to other metals. In contrast, copper is commonly regarded as being too lossy for plasmonic applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate vis-IR plasmons in long copper nanowires (NWs) with quality factors that exceed a value of 60, as determined by spatially resolved, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements. We explain this counterintuitive result by the fact that plasmons in these metal wires have most of their electromagnetic energy outside the metal, and thus, they are less sensitive to inelastic losses in the material. We present an extensive set of data acquired on long silver and copper NWs of varying diameters supporting this conclusion and further allowing us to understand the relative roles played by radiative and nonradiative losses in plasmons that span a wide range of energies down to $<20\,$meV. At such small plasmon energies, thermal population of these modes becomes significant enough to enable the observation of electron energy gains associated with plasmon absorption events. Our results support the use of copper as an attractive cheap and abundant material platform for high quality plasmons in elongated nanostructures.
Liquid-metal infiltrated Cu30Mo70 (weigth percentage) is subjected to severe plastic deformation using high pressure torsion. The initially equiaxed dual phase structure is gradually transformed into a lamellar structure composed of individual Cu and Mo layers. The thickness of the lamellae varies between the micrometer and nanometer ranges depending on the amount of applied strain. Consistent with the refinement of the microstructural features, strength and hardness substantially increase. In addition, an acceptable ductility is found in the intermediate deformation range. An assessment of th…
The data of experimental studies of optical characteristics of colloidal solutions, composition and morphology of its dispersed phase, resulting from laser ablation of zinc in aqueous solutions of anionic surfactants --- sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) are presented. It is shown that by studying the optical absorption spectra of the colloid, X-ray spectra and AFM-images of extracted from colloid solid phase, it is possible to trace the dynamics of ZnO nanostructures formation from zinc nanoclasters size of several nanometers to ZnO fractal aggregates (FA) size…
Nano-structured molybdenum-copper composites have been produced through severe plastic deformation of liquid-metal infiltrated Cu30Mo70 and Cu50Mo50 (wt.%) starting materials. Processing was carried out using high pressure torsion at room temperature with no subsequent sintering treatment, producing a porosity-free, ultrafine grained composite. Extensive deformation of the Cu50Mo50 composite via two-step high-pressure torsion produced equiaxed nanoscale grains of Mo and Cu with a grain size of 10-15 nm. Identical treatment of Cu30Mo70 produced a ultrafine, lamellar structure, comprised of Cu a…
Magnetic nanomaterials (23-43 nm) of Cu$_x$Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_2$O$_4$\ (x = 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0) were synthesized by auto combustion method. The crystallite sizes of these materials were calculated from X-ray diffraction peaks. The band observed in Fourier transform infrared spectrum near 575 cm$^{-1}$ in these samples confirm the presence of ferrite phase. Conductivity measurement shows the thermal hysteresis and demonstrates the knee points at 475$^o$C, 525$^o$C and 500$^o$C for copper ferrite, cobalt ferrite and copper-cobalt mixed ferrite respectively. The hystersis M-H loops for these materials w…
The development of molecular nanostructures plays a major role in emerging organic electronic applications, as it leads to improved performance and is compatible with our increasing need for miniaturisation. In particular, nanowires have been obtained from solution or vapour phase and have displayed high conductivity, or large interfacial areas in solar cells. In all cases however, the crystal structure remains as in films or bulk, and the exploitation of wires requires extensive post-growth manipulation as their orientations are random. Here we report copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanowires wi…
Heat pipe is one of the most efficient tools for heat dissipation in electronics and power systems. Currently, heat pipes are usually made of copper, aluminum or stainless steel. Due to their relatively high density and limited heat transmission capacity, heat pipes are facing urgent challenges in power electronics and power modules. In this paper, we report a new class of graphene enhanced heat pipes that can cope with these issues. The graphene enhanced heat pipes are made of high thermal conductivity graphene assembled film and graphene laminated copper films with nanostructure enhanced inn…
Micron-scale single-crystal nanowires of metallic TaSe3, a material that forms -Ta-Se3-Ta-Se3- stacks separated from one another by a tubular van der Waals (vdW) gap, have been synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a SiO2/Si substrate, in a process compatible with semiconductor industry requirements. Their electrical resistivity was found unaffected by downscaling from the bulk to as little as 7 nm in width and height, in striking contrast to the resistivity of copper for the same dimensions. While the bulk resistivity of TaSe3 is substantially higher than that of bulk copper, a…
One of the breakthrough areas of physical science over the past decade has been research in the field of nanostructured materials of various substances, almost all of the properties of which differ sharply from the properties of macroscopic size. It is difficult to list the areas of science and technology, where nanomaterials are not implemented due to their new original properties. In this regard, the development of technologies for the production of nanoscale structures is a topical issue which is of great interest in almost all areas of science and industry. As we know, all the known techno…

Noble metal nanostructures are ubiquitous elements in nano-optics, supporting plasmon modes that can focus light down to length scales commensurate with nonlocal effects associated with quantum confinement and spatial dispersion in the underlying electron gas. Nonlocal effects are naturally more prominent for crystalline noble metals, which potentially offer lower intrinsic loss than their amorphous counterparts, and with particular crystal facets giving rise to distinct electronic surface states. Here, we employ a quantum-mechanical model to describe nonclassical effects impacting the optical…
The development of materials processing techniques for optical diamond nanostructures containing a single color center is an important problem in quantum science and technology. In this work, we present the combination of ion implantation and top-down diamond nanofabrication in two scenarios: diamond nanopillars and diamond nanowires. The first device consists of a 'shallow' implant (~20nm) to generate Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers near the top surface of the diamond crystal. Individual NV centers are then isolated mechanically by dry etching a regular array of nanopillars in the diamond…
We present a surface stacking fault (SSF) energy approach to predicting defect nucleation from the surfaces of surface-dominated nanostructure such as FCC metal nanowires. The approach leads to a criteria that predicts the initial yield mechanism via either slip or twinning depending on whether the unstable twinning energy or unstable slip energy is smaller as determined from the resulting SSF energy curve. The approach is validated through a comparison between the SSF energy calculation and low-temperature classical molecular dynamics simulations of copper nanowires with different axial and t…

Improving building energy performance requires the development of new highly insulative materials. An affordable retrofitting solution comprising a thin film could improve the resistance to heat flow in both residential and commercial buildings and reduce overall energy consumption. Here we propose cellulose aerogel films formed from pellicles produced by the bacteria Gluconacetobacter hansenii as insulation materials. We studied the impact of density and nanostructure on the aerogels' thermal properties. Thermal conductivity as low as 13 mW/(K*m) was measured for native pellicle-based aerogel…
Hot electrons generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures have the potential to transform photocatalysis, photodetection and other optoelectronic applications. However, the understanding of hot-carrier generation in realistic nanostructures, in particular the relative importance of interband and intraband transitions, remains incomplete. Here we report theoretical predictions of hot-carrier generation rates in spherical nanoparticles of the noble metals silver, gold and copper with diameters up to 30 nanometers obtained from a novel atomistic linear-scalin…
Copper binary compounds are often intrinsic p-type semiconductors due to the presence of Cu(I) vacancies, with corresponding hole carriers in the valence band. If the free carrier concentration is high enough, localized plasmon resonances can be sustained in nanocrystals, with frequencies in the infra-red (<1 eV), with respect to the typical resonances seen in the visible range in the case of metals (Ag, Au, ...). The localization of the resonances can be demonstrated with scanning transmission electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) by combining high spatial and high energy resolutions.…

For environmental, sustainable economic and political reasons, recycling processes are becoming increasingly important, aiming at a much higher use of secondary raw materials. Currently, for the copper and aluminium industries, no method for the non-destructive online analysis of heterogeneous materials are available. The Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) has the potential to overcome this challenge. A difficulty when using PGNAA for online classification arises from the small amount of noisy data, due to short-term measurements. In this case, classical evaluation methods using …
BaSnO$_3$ exhibits the highest carrier mobility among perovskite oxides, making it ideal for oxide electronics. Collective charge carrier oscillations, plasmons, are expected to arise in this material, thus providing a tool to control the nanoscale optical field for optoelectronics applications. Here, we demonstrate the existence of relatively long-lived plasmons supported by high-mobility charge carriers in La-doped BaSnO$_3$ (BLSO). By exploiting the high spatial and energy resolution of electron energy-loss spectroscopy with a focused beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we …
Graphene plasmons are rapidly emerging as a viable tool for fast electrical manipulation of light. The prospects for applications to electro-optical modulation, optical sensing, quantum plasmonics, light harvesting, spectral photometry, and tunable lighting at the nanoscale are further stimulated by the relatively low level of losses and high degree of spatial confinement that characterize these excitations compared with conventional plasmonic materials. We start with a general description of the plasmons in extended graphene, followed by analytical methods that lead to reasonably accurate est…
