In this paper, we derive new relative perturbation bounds for eigenvectors and eigenvalues for regular quadratic eigenvalue problems of the form $λ^2 M x + λC x + K x = 0$, where $M$ and $K$ are nonsingular Hermitian matrices and $C$ is a general Hermitian matrix. We base our findings on new results for an equivalent regular Hermitian matrix pair $A-λB$. The new bounds can be applied to many interesting quadratic eigenvalue problems appearing in applications, such as mechanical models with indefinite damping. The quality of our bounds is demonstrated by several numerical experiments.
Recently a novel family of eigensolvers, called spectral indicator methods (SIMs), was proposed. Given a region on the complex plane, SIMs first compute an indicator by the spectral projection. The indicator is used to test if the region contains eigenvalue(s). Then the region containing eigenvalues(s) is subdivided and tested. The procedure is repeated until the eigenvalues are identified within a specified precision. In this paper, using Cayley transformation and Krylov subspaces, a memory efficient multilevel eigensolver is proposed. The method uses less memory compared with the early versi…
We obtain the generic complete eigenstructures of complex Hermitian $n\times n$ matrix pencils with rank at most $r$ (with $r\leq n$). To do this, we prove that the set of such pencils is the union of a finite number of bundle closures, where each bundle is the set of complex Hermitian $n\times n$ pencils with the same complete eigenstructure (up to the specific values of the finite eigenvalues). We also obtain the explicit number of such bundles and their codimension. The cases $r=n$, corresponding to general Hermitian pencils, and $r<n$ exhibit surprising differences, since for $r<n$ the gen…
We propose a verified computation method for eigenvalues in a region and the corresponding eigenvectors of generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problems. The proposed method uses complex moments to extract the eigencomponents of interest from a random matrix and uses the Rayleigh$\unicode{x2013}$Ritz procedure to project a given eigenvalue problem into a reduced eigenvalue problem. The complex moment is given by contour integral and approximated using numerical quadrature. We split the error in the complex moment into the truncation error of the quadrature and rounding errors and evaluate each. Th…

The present work is devoted to the eigenvalue asymptotic expansion of the Toeplitz matrix $T_{n}(a)$ whose generating function $a$ is complex valued and has a power singularity at one point. As a consequence, $T_{n}(a)$ is non-Hermitian and we know that the eigenvalue computation is a non-trivial task in the non-Hermitian setting for large sizes. We follow the work of Bogoya, Böttcher, Grudsky, and Maximenko and deduce a complete asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues. After that, we apply matrix-less algorithms, in the spirit of the work by Ekström, Furci, Garoni, Serra-Capizzano et al, for…
This paper describes a set of rational filtering algorithms to compute a few eigenvalues (and associated eigenvectors) of non-Hermitian matrix pencils. Our interest lies in computing eigenvalues located inside a given disk, and the proposed algorithms approximate these eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors by harmonic Rayleigh-Ritz projections on subspaces built by computing range spaces of rational matrix functions through randomized range finders. These rational matrix functions are designed so that directions associated with non-sought eigenvalues are dampened to (approximately) zero. Var…
Quadratic forms of Hermitian matrix resolvents involve the solutions of shifted linear systems. Efficient iterative solutions use the shift-invariance property of Krylov subspaces The Hermitian Lanczos method reduces a given vector and matrix to a Jacobi matrix (real symmetric tridiagonal matrix with positive super and sub-diagonal entries) and approximates the quadratic form using the Jacobi matrix. This study develops a shifted Lanczos method that deals directly with the Hermitian matrix resolvent. We derive a matrix representation of a linear operator that approximates the resolvent by solv…
We propose a verified computation method for partial eigenvalues of a Hermitian generalized eigenproblem. The block Sakurai-Sugiura Hankel method, a contour integral-type eigensolver, can reduce a given eigenproblem into a generalized eigenproblem of block Hankel matrices whose entries consist of complex moments. In this study, we evaluate all errors in computing the complex moments. We derive a truncation error bound of the quadrature. Then, we take numerical errors of the quadrature into account and rigorously enclose the entries of the block Hankel matrices. Each quadrature point gives rise…
This paper offers a review of numerical methods for computation of the eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and the singular values of general and some classes of structured matrices. The focus is on the main principles behind the methods that guarantee high accuracy even in the cases that are ill-conditioned for the conventional methods. First, it is shown that a particular structure of the errors in a finite precision implementation of an algorithm allows for a much better measure of sensitivity and that computation with high accuracy is possible despite a large classical condition number. Such…
It is customary to identify sparse matrices with the corresponding adjacency or incidence graph. For the solution of linear systems of equations using Gaussian elimination, the representation by its adjacency graph allows a symbolic computation that can be used to predict memory footprints and enables the determination of near-optimal elimination orderings based on heuristics. The Hermitian eigenvalue problem on the other hand seems to evade such treatment at first glance due to its inherent iterative nature. In this paper we prove this assertion wrong by showing the equivalence of the Hermiti…
On the convergence of orthogonalization-free conjugate gradient method for extreme eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices: a Riemannian optimization interpretation
We propose two different strategies to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a given, not necessarily Hermitian, matrix $A$. Our methods apply also to the case of complex eigenvalues, making the strategies interesting for applications to physics, and to pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics in particular. We first consider a {\em dynamical} approach, based on a pair of ordinary differential equations defined in terms of the matrix $A$ and of its adjoint $A^\dagger$. Then we consider an extension of the so-called power method, for which we prove a fixed point theorem for $A\neq A^\dagger$ useful in…
Many eigenvalue problems arising in practice are often of the generalized form $A\x=λB\x$. One particularly important case is symmetric, namely $A, B$ are Hermitian and $B$ is positive definite. The standard algorithm for solving this class of eigenvalue problems is to reduce them to Hermitian eigenvalue problems. For a quantum computer, quantum phase estimation is a useful technique to solve Hermitian eigenvalue problems. In this work, we propose a new quantum algorithm for symmetric generalized eigenvalue problems using ordinary differential equations. The algorithm has lower complexity than…
In this paper, a Parallel Direct Eigensolver for Sequences of Hermitian Eigenvalue Problems with no tridiagonalization is proposed, denoted by \texttt{PDESHEP}, and it combines direct methods with iterative methods. \texttt{PDESHEP} first reduces a Hermitian matrix to its banded form, then applies a spectrum slicing algorithm to the banded matrix, and finally computes the eigenvectors of the original matrix via backtransform. Therefore, compared with conventional direct eigensolvers, \texttt{PDESHEP} avoids tridiagonalization, which consists of many memory-bounded operations. In this work, the…
A thick-restart Lanczos type algorithm is proposed for Hermitian $J$-symmetric matrices. Since Hermitian $J$-symmetric matrices possess doubly degenerate spectra or doubly multiple eigenvalues with a simple relation between the degenerate eigenvectors, we can improve the convergence of the Lanczos algorithm by restricting the search space of the Krylov subspace to that spanned by one of each pair of the degenerate eigenvector pairs. We show that the Lanczos iteration is compatible with the $J$-symmetry, so that the subspace can be split into two subspaces that are orthogonal to each other. The…
