We propose two different strategies to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a given, not necessarily Hermitian, matrix $A$. Our methods apply also to the case of complex eigenvalues, making the strategies interesting for applications to physics, and to pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics in particular. We first consider a {\em dynamical} approach, based on a pair of ordinary differential equations defined in terms of the matrix $A$ and of its adjoint $A^\dagger$. Then we consider an extension of the so-called power method, for which we prove a fixed point theorem for $A\neq A^\dagger$ useful in the determination of the eigenvalues of $A$ and $A^\dagger$. The two strategies are applied to some explicit problems. In particular, we compute the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the matrix arising from a recently proposed quantum mechanical system, the {\em truncated Swanson model}, and we check some asymptotic features of the Hessenberg matrix.
Within the ideas of pseudo-supersymmetry, we have studied a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H_{-}=ω(ξ^† ξ+\1/2)+αξ^{2}+βξ^{†2}$, where $α\neq β$ and $ξ$ is a first order differential operator, to obtain the partner potentials $V_{+}(x)$ and $V_{-}(x)$ which are new isotonic and isotonic nonlinear oscillators, respectively, as the Hermitian equivalents of the non-Hermitian partner Hamiltonians $H_{\pm}$. We have provided an algebraic way to obtain the spectrum and wavefunctions of a nonlinear isotonic oscillator. The solutions of $V_{-}(x)$ which are Hermitian counterparts of Swanson Hamiltonian are…
The non-Hermitian quadratic oscillator studied by Swanson is one of the popular $PT$-symmetric model systems. Here a full classical description of its dynamics is derived using recently developed metriplectic flow equations, which combine the classical symplectic flow for Hermitian systems with a dissipative metric flow for the anti-Hermitian part. Closed form expressions for the metric and phase-space trajectories are presented which are found to be periodic in time. Since the Hamiltonian is only quadratic the classical dynamics exactly describes the quantum dynamics of Gaussian wave packets.…
New non Hermitian Hamiltonians are generated, as isospectral partners of the generalized Swanson model, viz., $ H_- = {\cal{A}}^{\dagger} {\cal{A}} + α{\cal{A}} ^2 + β{\cal{A}}^{\dagger 2} $, where $ αβ$ are real constants, with $ α\neq β$, and ${\cal{A}}^{\dagger}$ and ${\cal{A}}$ are generalized creation and annihilation operators. It is shown that the initial Hamiltonian $H_-$, and its partner $H_+$, are related by pseudo supersymmetry, and they share all the eigen energies except for the ground state. This pseudo supersymmetric extension enlarges the class of non Hermitian Hamiltonians $H_…
In this work, we study the non-hermitian Swanson hamiltonian, particularly the non-PT symmetry phase. We use the formalism of Gel'fand triplet to construct the generalized eigenfunctions and the corresponding spectrum. Depending on the region of the parameter model space, we show that the Swanson hamiltonian represents different physical systems, i.e. parabolic barrier, negative mass oscillators. We also discussed the presence of Exceptional Points of infinite order.
The generalized Swanson Hamiltonian $H_{GS} = w (\tilde{a}\tilde{a}^†+ 1/2) + α\tilde{a}^2 + β\tilde{a}^{†^2}$ with $\tilde{a} = A(x)d/dx + B(x)$, can be transformed into an equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian with the help of a similarity transformation. It is shown that the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian can be further transformed into the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian so long as $[\tilde{a},\tilde{a}^†]=$ constant. However, the main objective of this paper is to show that though the commutator of $\tilde{a}$ and $\tilde{a}^†$ is constant, the generalized Swanson Hamiltonian is not necessar…
We derive a one-step extension of the well known Swanson oscillator that describes a specific type of pseudo-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonian connected to an extended harmonic oscillator model. Our analysis is based on the use of the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and address various representations of the ladder operators starting from a seed solution of the harmonic oscillator given in terms of a pseudo-Hermite polynomial. The role of the resulting chain of Hamiltonians related via similarity transformation is then exploited. In the second part we write down a two dimensional …
We associate the stationary harmonic oscillator with time-dependent systems exhibiting non-Hermiticity by means of point transformations. The new systems are exactly solvable, with all-real spectrum, and transit to the Hermitian configuration for the appropriate values of the involved parameters. We provide a concrete generalization of the Swanson oscillator that includes the Caldirola-Kanai model as a particular case. Explicit solutions are given in both, the classical and quantum pictures.
A non-Hermitian generalized oscillator model, generally known as the Swanson model, has been studied in the framework of R-deformed Heisenberg algebra. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is diagonalized by generalized Bogoliubov transformation. A set of deformed creation annihilation operators is introduced whose algebra shows that the transformed Hamiltonian has conformal symmetry. The spectrum is obtained using algebraic technique. The superconformal structure of the system is also worked out in detail. An anomaly related to the spectrum of the Hermitian counterpart of the non-Hermitian Hamiltoni…
A class of non-Hermitian quadratic su(2) Hamiltonians having an anti-linear symmetry is constructed. This is achieved by analysing the possible symmetries of such systems in terms of automorphisms of the algebra. In fact, different realisations for this type of symmetry are obtained, including the natural occurrence of charge conjugation together with parity and time reversal. Once specified the underlying anti-linear symmetry of the Hamiltonian, the former, if unbroken, leads to a purely real spectrum and the latter can be mapped to a Hermitian counterpart by, amongst other possibilities, a s…
We generalize the Milne quantization condition to non-Hermitian systems. In the general case the underlying nonlinear Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation needs to be replaced by a nonlinear integral differential equation. However, when the system is PT-symmetric or/and quasi/pseudo-Hermitian the equations simplify and one may employ the original energy integral to determine its quantization. We illustrate the working of the general framework with the Swanson model and two explicit examples for pairs of supersymmetric Hamiltonians. In one case both partner Hamiltonians are Hermitian and in the other …
We investigate four different types of representations of deformed canonical variables leading to generalized versions of Heisenberg's uncertainty relations resulting from noncommutative spacetime structures. We demonstrate explicitly how the representations are related to each other and study three characteristically different solvable models on these spaces, the harmonic oscillator, the manifestly non-Hermitian Swanson model and an intrinsically noncommutative model with Poeschl-Teller type potential. We provide an analytical expression for the metric in terms of quantities specific to the g…
We introduce, for the first time, bicoherent-state path integration as a method for quantizing non-hermitian systems. Bicoherent-state path integrals arise as a natural generalization of ordinary coherent-state path integrals, familiar from hermitian quantum physics. We do all this by working out a concrete example, namely, computation of the propagator of a certain quasi-hermitian variant of Swanson's model, which is not invariant under conventional $PT$-transformation. The resulting propagator coincides with that of the propagator of the standard harmonic oscillator, which is isospectral wit…
We discuss two physical examples of the so-called {\em pseudo-bosons}, recently introduced in connection with pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics. In particular, we show that the so-called {\em extended harmonic oscillator} and the {\em Swanson model} satisfy all the assumptions of the pseudo-bosonic framework introduced by the author. We also prove that the biorthogonal bases they produce are not Riesz bases.
We propose a deformed version of the commutation rule introduced in 1967 by Buchdahl to describe a particular model of the truncated harmonic oscillator. The rule we consider is defined on a $N$-dimensional Hilbert space $\Hil_N$, and produces two biorhogonal bases of $\Hil_N$ which are eigenstates of the Hamiltonians $h=\frac{1}{2}(q^2+p^2)$, and of its adjoint $h^\dagger$. Here $q$ and $p$ are non-Hermitian operators obeying $[q,p]=i(\1-Nk)$, where $k$ is a suitable orthogonal projection operator. These eigenstates are connected by ladder operators constructed out of $q$, $p$, $q^\dagger$ an…
We consider the class of non-Hermitian operators represented by infinite tridiagonal matrices, selfadjoint in an indefinite inner product space with one negative square. We approximate them with their finite truncations. Both infinite and truncated matrices have eigenvalues of nonpositive type: either a single one on the real axis or a couple of complex conjugate ones. As a tool to evaluate the reliability of the use of truncations in numerical simulations, we give bounds for the rate of convergence of their eigenvalues of nonpositive type. Numerical examples illustrate our results.
A generic PT-symmetric Hamiltonian is assumed tridiagonalized and truncated to N dimensions, and its up-down symmetrized special cases with J=[N/2] real couplings are considered. In the strongly non-Hermitian regime the secular equation gets partially factorized at all N. This enables us to reveal a fine-tuned alignment of the dominant couplings implying an asymptotically sharply spiked shape of the boundary of the J-dimensional quasi-Hermiticity domain in which all the spectrum of energies remains real and observable.
Products of $M$ i.i.d. non-Hermitian random matrices of size $N \times N$ relate Gaussian fluctuation of Lyapunov and stability exponents in dynamical systems (finite $N$ and large $M$) to local eigenvalue universality in random matrix theory (finite $M$ and large $N$). The remaining task is to study local eigenvalue statistics as $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity simultaneously, which lies at the heart of understanding two kinds of universal patterns. For products of i.i.d. complex Ginibre matrices, truncated unitary matrices and spherical ensembles, as $M+N\to \infty$ we prove that local statisti…
We investigate the spectral properties of the product of $M$ complex non-Hermitian random matrices that are obtained by removing $L$ rows and columns of larger unitary random matrices uniformly distributed on the group ${\rm U}(N+L)$. Such matrices are called truncated unitary matrices or random contractions. We first derive the joint probability distribution for the eigenvalues of the product matrix for fixed $N,\ L$, and $M$, given by a standard determinantal point process in the complex plane. The weight however is non-standard and can be expressed in terms of the Meijer G-function. The exp…
An exact map was established by Lacroix-A-Chez-Toine, Majumdar, and Schehr in [44] between the $N$ complex eigenvalues of complex non-Hermitian random matrices from the Ginibre ensemble, and the positions of $N$ non-interacting Fermions in a rotating trap in the ground state. An important quantity is the statistics of the number of Fermions $\mathcal{N}_a$ in a disc of radius $a$. Extending the work [44] covering Gaussian and rotationally invariant potentials $Q$, we present a rigorous analysis in planar complex and symplectic ensembles, which both represent 2D Coulomb gases. We show that the …
