We consider the thermodynamics of a horizon surface from the viewpoint of the vacuum tension $τ=(c^4/4G )$. Numerically, $τ\approx 3.026\times 10^{43}$ Newton. In order of magnitude, this is the tension that has been proposed for microscopic string models of gravity. However, after decades of hard work on string theory models of gravity, there is no firm scientific evidence that such models of gravity apply empirically. Our purpose is thereby to discuss the gravitational tension in terms of the conventional Einstein general theory of relativity that apparently does explain much and maybe all of presently known experimental gravity data. The central result is that matter on the horizon surface is bound by the entropy-area law by tension in the closely analogous sense that the Wilson action-area law also describes a surface confinement.
The modified first laws of thermodynamics at the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon of the Schwarzschild de Sitter black hole and the apparent horizon of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology are derived by the surface tensions, respectively. The corresponding Smarr relations are obeyed. For the black hole, the cosmological constant is first treated as a fixed constant, and then as a variable associated to the pressure. The law at the apparent horizon takes the same form as that at the cosmological horizon, but is different from that at the black hole horizon. The positive temp…
Universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the Universe bounded by apparent/event horizon has been considered for massive gravity theory. Assuming Hawking temperature and using the unified first law of thermodynamics on the horizon, modified entropy on the horizon has been determined. For simple perfect fluid with constant equation of state, generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium have been examined on both the horizons.
In this article we have used the recently introduced redefined Hawking temperature on the event horizon and investigated whether the generalised second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamic equilibrium holds for both the event and the apparent horizons. Here we have considered FRW universe and examined the GSLT and thermodynamic equilibrium with three examples. Finally, we have concluded that from the thermodynamic viewpoint, the universe bounded by the event horizon is more realistic than that by the apparent horizon at least for some examples.
We derive new thermodynamic relations for asymptotically planar AdS black hole and soliton solutions. In addition to the ADM mass, these spacetimes are characterized by gravitational tensions in each of the planar spatial directions. We show that with planar AdS asymptotics, the sum of the ADM mass and tensions necessarily vanishes, as one would expect from the AdS /CFT correspondence. Each Killing vector of such a spacetime leads to a Smarr formula relating the ADM mass and tensions, the black hole horizon and soliton bubble areas, and a set of thermodynamic volumes that arise due to the non-…
The paper deals with universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the universe bounded by apparent (or event) horizon. Assuming Hawking temperature on the horizon, the unified first law is examined on the horizon for different gravity theories. The results show that equilibrium configuration is preserved with a modification to Bekenstein entropy on the horizon.
The idea of treating the horizon of a black hole as a stretched membrane with surface tension has a long history. In this work, we discuss the microscopic origin of the surface tension of the horizon in quantum pictures of spaces, which are Bose-Einstein condensates of gravitons. The horizon is a phase interface of gravitons, the surface tension of which is found to be a result of the difference in the strength of the interaction between the gravitons on its two sides. The gravitational source, such as a Schwarzschild black hole, creates a transitional zone by changing the energy and distribut…
The thermodynamic properties of Cauchy horizon is a matter of interest. Event horizon and Cauchy horizon together can enlighten us about the micro-states of a black hole. In addition, if we consider a black hole metric modified with quantum terms, which is not forcing the geodesics to focus at a singularity, the study of horizons becomes much more interesting. The spacelike behavior inside the Cauchy horizon has a deep impact on the related thermodynamics. We analyze different thermodynamic product to check whether a right left string theory mode's addition type representation for the concerne…
In this brief communication, we have studied the validity of the first law of thermodynamics for the universe bounded by event horizon with two examples. The key point is the appropriate choice of the temperature on the event horizon. Finally, we have concluded that universe bounded by the event horizon may be a Bekenstein system and the Einstein's equations and the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizons are equivalent.
In an accelerated expanding universe, one can expect the existence of an event horizon. It may be interesting to study the thermodynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe at the event horizon. Considering the usual Hawking temperature, the first law of thermodynamics does not hold on the event horizon. To satisfy the first law of thermodynamics, it is necessary to redefine Hawking temperature. In this paper, using the redefinition of Hawking temperature and applying the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizon, the Friedmann equations are obtained in f(R) gravity from t…
We study a modified horizon thermodynamics and the associated criticality for rotating black hole spacetimes. Namely, we show that under a virtual displacement of the black hole horizon accompanied by an independent variation of the rotation parameter, the radial Einstein equation takes a form of a "cohomogeneity two" horizon first law, $dE=TdS+ΩdJ-σdA$, where $E$ and $J$ are the horizon energy (an analogue of the Misner-Sharp mass) and the horizon angular momentum, $Ω$ is the horizon angular velocity, $A$ is the horizon area, and $σ$ is the surface tension induced by the matter fields. For fi…
By regarding the Einstein equations as equation(s) of state, we demonstrate that a full cohomogeneity horizon first law can be derived in horizon thermodynamics. In this approach both the entropy and the free energy are derived concepts, while the standard (degenerate) horizon first law is recovered by a Legendre projection from the more general one we derive. These results readily generalize to higher curvature gravities and establish a way of how to formulate consistent black hole thermodynamics without conserved charges.
To investigate the relationship between gravity and thermodynamics in the case of dynamic systems, we interpret the apparent horizon of the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime as a thermodynamic system. We derive the corresponding fundamental equation in the entropy representation and explore the consequences of demanding the fulfillment of the classical laws of thermodynamics. We investigate in detail the case of an FLRW spacetime with and without cosmological constant. We show that the interpretation of the apparent horizon as a thermodynamic system is possible only under ce…
We study the irreversible (non-equilibrium) thermodynamics of FRW universe containing only dark energy. Using the modified entropy-area relation which is motivated from the loop quantum gravity, we calculate the entropy-corrected form of the apparent horizon of FRW universe.
The present work deals with a detailed study of universal thermodynamics in different modified gravity theories. The validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamical equilibrium (TE) of the Universe bounded by a horizon (apparent/event) in f(R)-gravity, Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, RS-II brane scenario and DGP brane model has been investigated. In the perspective of recent observational evidences, the matter in the Universe is chosen as interacting holographic dark energy model. The entropy on the horizons are evaluated from the validity of the unified firs…
We study the intriguing analogy between gravitational dynamics of the horizon and thermodynamics for the case of nonstationary radiating spherically symmetric black holes both in four dimensions and higher dimensions. By defining all kinematical parameters of nonstationary radiating black holes in terms of null vectors, we demonstrate that it is possible to interpret the Einstein field equations near the apparent horizon in the form of a thermodynamical identity $TdS=dE+PdV$.

Certain dynamical black hole solutions can be mapped to static spacetimes by conformal metric transformations. This mapping provides a physical link between the conformal Killing horizon of the dynamical black hole and a Killing horizon of the static spacetime. We show how this conformal relation can be used to derive thermodynamic properties for the dynamical black holes. Although these horizons are defined quasi-locally and can be located by local experiments, they are distinct from other popular notions of quasi-local horizons such as apparent horizons. Thus in the dynamical Vaidya spacetim…
The work deals with the thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon. The matter in the universe has three constituents namely dark energy, dark matter and radiation in nature and interaction between then is assumed. The variation of entropy of the surface of the horizon is obtained from unified first law while matter entropy variation is calculated from the Gibbss' law. Finally, validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics is examined and conclusions are written point wise.
Our aim is to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the universe bounded by the cosmological event horizon and dominated by the tachyon fluid. We give two different laws of evolution of our universe. Further, we show the first law and the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) are both satisfied in two cases, but their properties of the thermodynamic equilibrium are totally different. Besides, under our solutions, we find the validity of the laws of thermodynamics is irrelevant with the parameters of the tachyon fluid. Finally, we conclude that the universe bounded by the cosmol…
In the context of modified $f(R)$ gravity theory, we study time-dependent wormhole spacetimes in the radiation background. In this framework, we attempt to generalize the thermodynamic properties of time-dependent wormholes in $f(R)$ gravity. Finally, at event horizon, the rate of change of total entropy has been discussed.
On the basis of horizon thermodynamics we study the thermodynamic stability of black holes constructed in general relativity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the framework of horizon thermodynamics there are only five thermodynamic variables $E,P,V,T,S$. It is not necessary to consider concrete matter fields, which may contribute to the pressure of black hole thermodynamic system. In non-vacuum cases, we can derive the equation of state, $P=P(V,T)$. According to the requirements of stable equilibrium in conventional thermodynamics, we start from these thermodynamic variables to calculate the heat …
In this paper, we study different cases of the charged rotating BTZ black hole with reference to their horizons. For the existence of these cases conditions on mass, charge and angular momentum of the black hole are obtained. It is also shown that the Einstein field equations for the charged rotating BTZ black hole at the horizon can be expressed as first law of thermodynamics, $dE=TdS+ΩdJ+Φdq+P_{r}dA$.
We investigate the validity of the generalized second law in irreversible thermodynamics in a non-flat FRW universe containing the interacting dark energy with cold dark matter. The boundary of the universe is assumed to be enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon. We show that for the present time, the generalized second law in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is satisfied for the special range of the energy transfer constants.
Here we consider our universe as inhomogeneous spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Model and analyze the thermodynamics of this model of the universe. The trapping horizon is calculated and is found to coincide with the apparent horizon. The Einstein field equations are shown to be equivalent with the unified first law of thermodynamics. Finally assuming the first law of thermodynamics validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics is examined at the apparent horizon for the perfect fluid and at the event horizon for holographic dark energy.
Thermodynamics on the cosmological apparent horizon of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric has been investigated with Bekenstein entropy and Hawking temperature on the horizon, and Unruh temperature for the fluid inside the horizon. This temperature is experienced by a radial comoving observer infinitesimally close to the horizon due to the pressure exerted by the fluid bounded by the horizon. An expression for the entropy of the fluid has been obtained which is found to be proportional to the volume of the thermodynamic system which implies that the Unruh temperature of the flui…
In blackhole physics, the second law of thermodynamics is generally valid whether the blackhole is a static or a non-static one. Considering the universe as a thermodynamical system the second law of blackhole dynamics extends to the non-negativity of the sum of the entropy of the matter and the horizon, known as generalized second law of thermodynamics(GSLT). Here, we have assumed the universe to be bounded by the event-horizon or filled with perfect fluid and holographic dark energy in two cases. Thus considering entropy to be an arbitrary function of the area of the event-horizon, we have t…
In this paper we show that the gravitational field equations of $(n+1)$% -dimensional topological black holes with constant horizon curvature, in cubic and quartic quasi-topological gravity, can be recast in the form of the first law of thermodynamics, $dE=TdS-PdV$, at the black hole horizon. This procedure leads to extract an expression for the horizon entropy as well as the energy (mass) in terms of the horizon radius, which coincide exactly with those obtained in quasi-topological gravity by solving the field equations and using the Wald's method. We also argue that this approach is powerfu…
This letter presents a new, solely thermodynamical argument for considering the states of the quantum isolated horizon of a black hole as distinguishable. We claim that only if the states are distinguishable, the thermodynamic entropy is an extensive quantity and can be well-defined. To show this, we make a comparison with a classical ideal gas system whose statistical description makes only sense if an additional 1/N!-factor is included in the state counting in order to cure the Gibbs paradox. The case of the statistical description of a quantum isolated horizon is elaborated, to make the cla…
We study the relation between the thermodynamics and field equations of generalized gravity theories on the dynamical trapping horizon with sphere symmetry. We assume the entropy of dynamical horizon as the Noether charge associated with the Kodama vector and point out that it satisfies the second law when a Gibbs equation holds. We generalize two kinds of Gibbs equations to Gauss-Bonnet gravity on any trapping horizon. Based on the quasi-local gravitational energy found recently for $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity in some special cases, we also build up the Gibbs equations, where the…
Verification of the First Law of Horizon Thermodynamics for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman Black Holes in Four-Dimensional f(R) Gravity with Dual Scalar Fields
In the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity the concept of gravitational pressure and gravitational energy-momentum arisen in a natural way. In the case of a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker space FLRW we obtain the total energy contained inside the apparent horizon and the radial pressure over the apparent horizon area. We use these definitions to written a thermodynamics relation $T_{A}dS_{A} = dE_{A}+P_{A}dV_{A}$ at the apparent horizon, where $E_{A}$ is the total energy inside the apparent horizon, $V_{A}$ is the areal volume of the apparent horizon, $P_{A}$ is t…

In this paper, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon. Here we consider homogeneous and isotropic model of the universe filled with perfect fluid in one case and in another case holographic model of the universe has been considered. In the third case the matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system as holographic dark energy and dust. Here we study the above cases in the Modified gravity, f(R) gravity.
In this paper, we examine the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) of the universe bounded by the event horizon in brane-world gravity. Here we consider homogeneous and isotropic model of the universe filled with perfect fluid in one case and in another case holographic dark energy model of the universe has been considered. The conclusions are presented point wise.
In this letter, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon in the holographic dark energy model. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic and the validity of the first law has been assumed here. The matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system- one component is the holographic dark energy model and the other component is in the form of dust.
The electrical laws and Carnot cycle of Isolated Horizon (IH) are investigated in this paper. We establish the Ohm's law and Joule's law of an Isolated Horizon, and find that the conceptual picture of black holes (Membrane Paradigm) can also apply to this kind of quasi-local black holes. We also investigate the geometrical properties near a non-rotating IH, and find that under the first-order approximation of r, there exist a Killing vector and a Hamiltonian conjugate to it, so this vector is a physical observer. We calculate the energy as measured at infinity of a particle at rest outside a n…
We examine the conditions under which the thermodynamic behaviour of gravity can be explained within an emergent gravity scenario, where the metric is defined as a composite operator. We show that due to the availability of a boundary of a boundary principle for the quantum effective action, Clausius-like relations can always be constructed. Hence, any true explanation of the thermodynamic nature of the metric tensor has to be referred to an equilibration process, associated to the presence of an H-theorem, possibly driven by decoherence induced by the pregeometric degrees of freedom, and thei…
The theories of gravity which violate local Lorentz invariance do not admit a universal maximum speed of signal-propagation. Different field excitations see a different effective metric and hence a different light cone. In these theories, although one can define the Killing horizon in a conventional way, this definition does not capture the notion of a black hole. This is so because there exist modes which see a wider light cone than the one defined by the Killing Horizon and therefore can escape to infinity. However, there exist solutions of these theories which admit a special spacelike hype…
In this note, we explore the thermodynamic properties of the universe in the background of the generalized energy-momentum-squared gravity. We derive the energy density of matter from the non-standard continuity equation and use it in our analysis. We consider two types of models depending on the nature of coupling between curvature and matter and perform thermodynamic analysis on them using the cosmic apparent horizon. The models are kept as generic as possible from the mathematical point of view in order to gain a wide applicability of the work. In this work we have considered power law and …
In the context of modified $f(R)$ gravity, we attempt to study the thermodynamic properties of the evolving Lorentzian wormholes at the apparent horizon. It is shown that the wormhole can be derived from a particular $f(R)$ model in the radiation background. Moreover, it has been shown that the field equations can be cast to a similar form $dE = TdS + WdV + Td\bar{S}$ at the apparent horizon for the evolving Lorentzian wormhole. Compared to the case of Einstein's general relativity, an additional term $Td\bar{S}$ appears here.
The thermodynamics of Universe in the Eddington-Born-Infeld (EBI) theory was restudied by utilizing the holographic-style gravitational equations that dominate the dynamics of the cosmical apparent horizon $Υ_{A}$ and the evolution of Universe. We started in rewriting the EBI action of the Palatini approach into the Bigravity-type action with an extra metric $q_{μν}$. With the help of the holographic-style dynamical equations, we discussed the property of the cosmical apparent horizon $Υ_{A}$ including timelike, spacelike and null characters, which depends on the value of the parameter of stat…
We investigate the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics of a physical system comprising of newly proposed dark energy model called Ricci Gauss-Bonnet and cold dark matter enveloped by apparent horizon and event horizon in flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. For this purpose, Bekenstein entropy, Renyi, logarithmic and power law entropic corrections are used. It is found that this law exhibits the validity on both apparent and event horizons except for the case of logarithmic entropic correction at apparent horizon. Also, we check the thermodynamical equilibrium condi…
A study of Universal thermodynamics is done in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The Universe is chosen as FRW model bounded by apparent or event horizon. The unified first law is examined, assuming extended Hawking temperature on the horizon. As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated for perfect fluid (with constant equation of state), modified chaplygin gas model and holographic dark energy model.
Comment on Cosmological constraints on unimodular gravity models with diffusion (arXiv:2211.07424): thermodynamic inadmissibility of the H0 tension resolution mechanism
The first law of black hole thermodynamics can be read off from the field equations at the horizon. Until now, for black holes with multiple horizons the field equations only at the outer horizon were employed with a particular constraint. In this paper, however, we suggest that for a black hole with multiple horizons the field equations at the inner horizon as well as the outer horizon should be needed in order to obtain the first law of black hole thermodynamics in general.
