We study the DC conductivity of a weakly disordered 2D electron gas with two bands and spectral nodes, employing the field theoretical version of the Kubo--Greenwood conductivity formula. Disorder scattering is treated within the standard perturbation theory by summing up ladder and maximally crossed diagrams. The emergent gapless (diffusion) modes determine the behavior of the conductivity on large scales. We find a finite conductivity with an intermediate logarithmic finite-size scaling towards smaller conductivities but do not obtain the logarithmically divergence of the weak-localization approach. Our results agree with the experimentally observed logarithmic scaling of the conductivity in graphene with the formation of a plateau near $e^2/πh$.
Double Weyl nodes are topologically protected band crossing points which carry chiral charge $\pm2$. They are stabilized by $C_4$ point group symmetry and are predicted to occur in $\mathrm{SrSi_2}$ or $\mathrm{HgCr_{2}Se_{4}}$. We study their fate in the presence of quenched disorder by numerical transport calculations and scaling arguments. We find that a double Weyl node is unstable in a disordered environment and splits into a pair of emergent simple Weyl nodes which carry equal chiral charge of $\pm1$. This pair of simple Weyl nodes is robust to disorder up to a certain critical disorder …
We examine the charge transport through disordered arrays of metallic dots using numerical simulations. We find power law scaling in the current-voltage curves for arrays containing no voids, while for void-filled arrays charge bottlenecks form and a single scaling is absent, in agreement with recent experiments. In the void-free case we also show that the scaling exponent depends on the effective dimensionality of the system. For increasing applied drives we find a transition from 2D disordered filamentary flow near threshold to a 1D smectic flow which can be identified experimentally using c…
The temperature ($T$) and frequency ($ω$) dependent conductivity of weakly disordered Luttinger liquids is calculated in a systematic way both by perturbation theory and from a finite temperature renormalization group (RG) treatment to leading order in the disorder strength. Whereas perturbation theory results in $ω/T$ scaling of the conductivity such scaling is violated in the RG traetment. We also determine the non-linear field dependence of the conductivity, whose power law scaling is different from that of temperature and frequency dependence.
Three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl semimetals exhibit a disorder-induced quantum phase transition between a semimetallic phase at weak disorder and a diffusive-metallic phase at strong disorder. Despite considerable effort, both numerically and analytically, the critical exponents $ν$ and $z$ of this phase transition are not known precisely. Here we report a numerical calculation of the critical exponent $ν=1.47\pm0.03$ using a minimal single-Weyl node model and a finite-size scaling analysis of conductance. Our high-precision numerical value for $ν$ is incompatible with previous numerical studi…
The crossover between a free magnetic moment phase and a Kondo phase in low dimensional disordered metals with dilute magnetic impurities is studied. We perform a finite size scaling analysis of the distribution of the Kondo temperature as obtained from a numerical renormalization group calculation of the local magnetic susceptibility and from the solution of the self-consistent Nagaoka-Suhl equation. We find a sizable fraction of free (unscreened) magnetic moments when the exchange coupling falls below a disorder-dependent critical value $J_{\rm c}$. Our numerical results show that between th…
The curvatures of two-particle energy levels with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux in mesoscopic disordered rings are investigated numerically. We find that the typical value of the curvatures is increased by interactions in the localised regime and decreased in the metallic regime. This confirms a prediction by Akkermans and Pichard (Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 223 (1998)). The interaction-induced changes of the typical curvatures at different energies and disorder strengths exhibit one-parameter scaling with a conductance-like single parameter. This suggests that interactions could influence the…
The statistics of the energy eigenvalues at the metal-insulator-transition of a two-dimensional disordered system with spin-orbit interaction is investigated numerically. The critical exponent $ν$ is obtained from the finite-size scaling of the number $J_0$ which is related to the probability $Q_{n}(s)$ of having $n$ energy levels within an interval of width $s$. In contrast to previous estimates, we find $ν=2.32\pm 0.14$ close to the value of the two-dimensional quantum Hall system.
Double Weyl nodes are topologically protected band crossing points which carry chiral charge $\pm2$. They are stabilized by $C_{4}$ point group symmetry and are predicted to occur in $\mathrm{SrSi_{2}}$ or $\mathrm{HgCr_{2}Se_{4}}$. We study their stability and physical properties in the presence of a disorder potential. We investigate the density of states and the quantum transport properties at the nodal point. We find that, in contrast to their counterparts with unit chiral charge, double Weyl nodes are unstable to any finite amount of disorder and give rise to a diffusive phase, in agreeme…
We investigate the finite-size scaling of the boundary quantum geometric tensor (QGT) numerically close to the Anderson localization transition in the presence of small external magnetic fields. The QGT exhibits universal scaling and reveals the crossover between the orthogonal and unitary critical states in weak random magnetic fields. The flow of the QGT near the critical points determines the critical exponents. Critical distributions of the QGT are universal and exhibit a remarkable isotropy even in a homogeneous magnetic field. We predict universal and isotropic Hall conductance fluctuati…
This review is intended to give a pedagogical and unified view on the subject of the statistics and scaling of physical quantities in disordered electron systems at very low temperatures. Quantum coherence at low temperatures and randomness of microscopic details can cause large fluctuations of physical quantities. In such mesoscopic systems a localization-delocalization transition can occur which forms a critical phenomenon. Accordingly, a one-parameter scaling theory was formulated stressing the role of conductance as the (one-parameter) scaling variable. However, the notion of an order para…
Finding fingerprints of disordered Weyl semimetals (WSMs) is an unsolved task. Here we report such findings in the level statistics and the fractal nature of electron wavefunction around Weyl nodes of disordered WSMs. The nearest-neighbor level spacing follows a new universal distribution $P_c(s)=C_1 s^2\exp[-C_2 s^{2-γ_0}]$ originally proposed for the level statistics of critical states in the integer quantum Hall systems or normal dirty metals (diffusive metals) at metal-to-insulator transitions, instead of the Wigner-Dyson distribution for diffusive metals. Numerically, we find $γ_0=0.62\pm…
The global density of states (GDOS) close to the band center $ε=0$ for a particle hopping on a square lattice and subjected to disorder that preserves the bipartite symmetry of the lattice is computed using field theoretical methods. The GDOS diverges like $ |ε|^{-1}\exp (-c|\lnε|^κ ) $ with $κ=2/3$ in agreement with a prediction by Motrunich \textit{et al.} and in disagreement with an older prediction by Gade ($κ=1/2$).
We study heat conduction mediated by longitudinal phonons in one dimensional disordered harmonic chains. Using scaling properties of the phonon density of states and localization in disordered systems, we find non-trivial scaling of the thermal conductance with the system size. Our findings are corroborated by extensive numerical analysis. We show that a system with strong disorder, characterized by a `heavy-tailed' probability distribution, and with large impedance mismatch between the bath and the system satisfies Fourier's law. We identify a dimensionless scaling parameter, related to the t…
Bond-disordered Anderson model in two dimensions on a square lattice is studied numerically near the band center by calculating density of states (DoS), multifractal properties of eigenstates and the localization length. DoS divergence at the band center is studied and compared with Gade's result [Nucl. Phys. B 398, 499 (1993)] and the powerlaw. Although Gade's form describes accurately DoS of finite size systems near the band-center, it fails to describe the calculated part of DoS of the infinite system, and a new expression is proposed. Study of the level spacing distributions reveals that t…
The effect of an electric field on conduction in a disordered system is an old but largely unsolved problem. Experiments cover an wide variety of systems - amorphous/doped semiconductors, conducting polymers, organic crystals, manganites, composites, metallic alloys, double perovskites - ranging from strongly localized systems to weakly localized ones, from strongly correlated ones to weakly correlated ones. Theories have singularly failed to predict any universal trend resulting in separate theories for separate systems. Here we discuss an one-parameter scaling that has recently been found to…
Localization of electronic states in disordered thin layered systems with b layers is studied within the Anderson model of localization using the transfer-matrix method and finite-size scaling of the inverse of the smallest Lyapunov exponent. The results support the one-parameter scaling hypothesis for disorder strengths W studied and b=1,...,6. The obtained results for the localization length are in good agreement with both the analytical results of the self-consistent theory of localization and the numerical scaling studies of the two-dimensional Anderson model. The localization length near …
We study the phase distribution of the complex reflection coefficient in different configurations as a disordered 1D system evolves in length, and its effect on the distribution of the 4-probe resistance $R_4$. The stationary ($L \to \infty$) phase distribution is almost always strongly non-uniform and is in general double-peaked with their separation decaying algebraically with growing disorder strength to finally give rise to a single narrow peak at infinitely strong disorder. Further in the length regime where the phase distribution still evolves with length (i.e., in the quasi-ballistic to…
Oscillatory variations of the diagonal ($G_{xx}$) and Hall ($G_{xy}$) magnetoconductances are discussed in view of topological scaling effects giving rise to the quantum Hall effect. They occur in a field range without oscillations of the density of states due to Landau quantization, and are, therefore, totally different from the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Such oscillations are experimentally observed in disordered GaAs layers in the extreme quantum limit of applied magnetic field with a good description by the unified scaling theory of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect.
We propose a general scheme to construct scaling equations for the density of states in disordered quantum wires for all ten pure Cartan symmetry classes. The anomalous behavior of the density of states near the Fermi level for the three chiral and four Bogoliubov-de Gennes universality classes is analysed in detail by means of a mapping to a scaling equation for the reflection from a quantum wire in the presence of an imaginary potential.
We investigate Anderson localization on various 1D structures having flat bands. The main focus is on the scaling laws obeyed by the localization length at weak disorder in the vicinity of flat-band energies. A careful distinction is made between situations where the scaling functions are universal (i.e., depend on the disorder distribution only through its width) and where they keep depending on the full shape of the disorder distribution, even in the weak-disorder scaling regime. Three examples are analyzed in detail. On the stub chain, one central flat band is isolated from two lateral disp…
Electron transport phenomena in disordered electron systems with spin-orbit coupling in two dimensions and below are studied numerically. The scaling hypothesis is checked by analyzing the scaling of the quasi-1D localization length. A logarithmic increase of the mean conductance is also confirmed. These support the theoretical prediction that the two dimensional metal in systems with spin-orbit coupling has a perfect conductivity. Transport through a Sierpinski carpet is also reported.
We study the diffusive and localization properties of wavepackets in disordered wires in a magnetic field. In contrast to a recent supersymmetry approach our numerical results show that the decay rate of the steady state changes {\em smoothly} at the crossover from preserved to broken time-reversal symmetry. Scaling and fluctuation properties are also analyzed and a formula, which was derived analytically only in the pure symmetry cases is shown to describe also the steady state wavefunction at the crossover regime. Finally, we present a scaling for the variance of the packet which shows again…
We study the dynamics of Dirac and Weyl electrons in disordered point-node semimetals. The ballistic feature of the transport is demonstrated by simulating the wave-packet dynamics on lattice models. We show that the ballistic transport survives under a considerable strength of disorder up to the semimetal-metal transition point, which indicates the robustness of point-node semimetals against disorder. We also visualize the robustness of the nodal points and linear dispersion under broken translational symmetry. The speed of the wave packets slows down with increasing disorder strength, and va…
Two-dimensional (2D) massless Dirac electrons appear on a surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. The conductivity of such a 2D Dirac electron system is studied for strong topological insulators in the case of the Fermi level being located at the Dirac point. The average conductivity $\langleσ\rangle$ is numerically calculated for a system of length $L$ and width $W$ under the periodic or antiperiodic boundary condition in the transverse direction, and its behavior is analyzed by applying a finite-size scaling approach. It is shown that $\langleσ\rangle$ is minimized at the clean …
We numerically study the distribution function of the conductance (transmission) in the one-dimensional tight-binding Anderson and periodic-on-average superlattice models in the region of fluctuation states where single parameter scaling is not valid. We show that the scaling properties of the distribution function depend upon the relation between the system's length $L$ and the length $l_s$ determined by the integral density of states. For long enough systems, $L \gg l_s$, the distribution can still be described within a new scaling approach based upon the ratio of the localization length $l_…
We analyze the full transport statistics of graphene with smooth disorder at low dopings. First we consider the case of 1D disorder for which the transmission probability distribution is given analytically in terms of the graphene-specific mean free path. All current cumulants are shown to scale with system parameters (doping, size, disorder strength and correlation length) in an identical fashion for large enough systems. In the case of 2D disorder, numerical evidence is given for the same kind of identical scaling of all current cumulants, so that the ratio of any two such cumulants is unive…
We report a metal-insulator transition in disordered graphene with low coverages of hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen interacting with graphene creates short-range disorder and localizes states near the neutrality point. The energy range of localization grows with increasing of H concentration. Calculations show that the conductances through low-energy propagating channels decay exponentially with sample size and are well fitted by one-parameter scaling function, similar to a disorder-driven metal-insulator transition in 2-dimensional disordered systems.
Dynamics of a system exhibits non-adiabaticity even for slow quenches near critical points. We analyze the response to disorder in quenches on a non-adiabaticity quantifier for the quantum Rabi model, which possesses a phase transition between normal and superradiant phases. We consider a disordered version of a quench in the Rabi model, in which the system residing in the ground state of an initial Hamiltonian of the normal phase is quenched to the final Hamiltonian corresponding to the critical point. The disorder is inserted either in the total time the quench or in the quench parameter its…
An efficient order$-N$ real-space Kubo approach is developed for the calculation of the thermal conductivity of complex disordered materials. The method, which is based on the Chebyshev polynomial expansion of the time evolution operator and the Lanczos tridiagonalization scheme, efficiently treats the propagation of phonon wave-packets in real-space and the phonon diffusion coefficients. The mean free paths and the thermal conductance can be determined from the diffusion coefficients. These quantities can be extracted simultaneously for all frequencies, which is another advantage in compariso…
The wavefunctions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characteristics in the spatially resolved local density of states of a two-dimensional mixed surface alloy Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111), by combining high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy with spin and angle-resolved inverse-photoemission experiments. Our detailed knowledge of the surface alloy electronic band structure, the exact lattice structure and the ato…
We report a new attractive critical point occurring in the Anderson localization scaling flow of symplectic models on fractals. The scaling theory of Anderson localization predicts that in disordered symplectic two-dimensional systems weak antilocalization effects lead to a metal-insulator transition. This transition is characterized by a repulsive critical point above which the system becomes metallic. Fractals possess a non-integer scaling of conductance in the classical limit which can be continuously tuned by changing the fractal structure. We demonstrate that in disordered symplectic Hami…
We introduce a network model to describe two-dimensional disordered electron systems with spin-orbit scattering. The network model is defined by a discrete unitary time evolution operator. We establish by numerical transfer matrix calculations that the model exhibits a localization-delocalization transition. We determine the corresponding phase diagram in the parameter space of disorder scattering strength and spin-orbit scattering strength. Near the critical point we determine by statistical analysis a one-parameter scaling function and the critical exponent of the localization length to be $…
We analyze the transport in disordered two-dimensional nanoparticle arrays. We show that the commonly used scaling hypothesis to fit the I-V curves does not describe the electronic transport in these systems. On the contrary, close to the threshold voltage V_T the current depends linearly on (V-V_T). This linear behavior is observed for at least five decades in (V-V_T). Fitting the I-V curves at larger voltages to a scaling power-law I \propto (V/V_T-1)^ξresults in fitting parameters which depend on the range of voltages used and in wrong values for V_T. Our results urge to change the picture …
We numerically investigate critically delocalized wavefunctions in models of 2D Dirac fermions, subject to vector potential disorder. These describe the surface states of 3D topological superconductors, and can also be realized through long-range correlated bond randomness in artificial materials like molecular graphene. A frozen regime can occur for strong disorder in these systems, wherein a single wavefunction presents a few localized peaks separated by macroscopic distances. Despite this rarefied spatial structure, we find robust correlations between eigenstates at different energies, at b…
We investigate the size scaling of the conductance of surface disordered graphene sheets of width W and length L. Metallic leads are attached to the sample ends across its width. At E ~ 0, the conductance scales with the system size as follows: i) For constant W/L, it remains constant as size is increased, at a value which depends almost lineally on that ratio; this scaling allows the definition of a conductivity value that results similar to the experimental one. ii) For fixed width, the conductance decreases exponentially with length L, both for ordered and disordered samples. Disorder reduc…
