We prove the existence and the linear stability of small amplitude time {\it quasi-periodic} standing wave solutions (i.e. periodic and even in the space variable $ x $) of a $ 2 $-dimensional ocean with infinite depth under the action of gravity and surface tension. Such an existence result is obtained for all the values of the surface tension belonging to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.
The paper deals with the 2D gravity-capillary water waves equations in their Hamiltonian formulation, addressing the question of the nonlinear interaction of a plane wave with its reflection off a vertical wall. The main result is the construction of small amplitude, standing (namely periodic in time and space, and not travelling) solutions of Sobolev regularity, for almost all values of the surface tension coefficient, and for a large set of time-frequencies. This is an existence result for a quasi-linear, Hamiltonian, reversible system of two autonomous pseudo-PDEs with small divisors. The p…
Consider the capillary water waves equations, set in the whole space with infinite depth, and consider small data (i.e. sufficiently close to zero velocity, and constant height of the water). We prove global existence and scattering. The proof combines in a novel way the energy method with a cascade of energy estimates, the space-time resonance method and commuting vector fields.
In this paper we prove a global regularity result for a quadratic quasilinear model associated to the water waves system with surface tension and no gravity in dimension two (the capillary waves system). The model we consider here retains most of the difficulties of the full capillary water waves system, including the delicate time-resonance structure and modified scattering. It is slightly simpler, however, at the technical level and our goal here is to present our method in this simplified situation. The full system is the subject of a forthcoming paper.
This article is concerned with the incompressible, irrotational infinite depth water wave equation in two space dimensions, without gravity but with surface tension. We consider this problem expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates, and prove that small data solutions have at least cubic lifespan while small localized data leads to global solutions.
We prove the existence of small steady periodic capillary-gravity water waves for general stratified flows, where we allow for stagnation points in the flow. We establish the existence of both laminar and non-laminar flow solutions for the governing equations. This is achieved by using bifurcation theory and estimates based on the ellipticity of the system, where we regard, in turn, the mass-flux and surface tension as bifurcation parameters.
In this paper we construct periodic capillarity-gravity water waves with a piecewise constant vorticity distribution. They describe water waves traveling on superposed linearly sheared currents that have different vorticities. This is achieved by associating to the height function formulation of the water wave problem a diffraction problem where we impose suitable transmission conditions on each line where the vorticity function has a jump. The solutions of the diffraction problem, found by using local bifurcation theory, are the desired solutions of the hydrodynamical problem.
We consider the gravity-capillary waves in any dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms. Using the paradiferential reduction established in the companion paper, we prove Strichartz estimates for solutions to this problem, at a low regularity level such that initially, the velocity field can be non-Lipschitz up to the free surface. We then use those estimates to solve the Cauchy problem at this level of regularity.
We consider the gravity-capillary water waves problem in a domain $Ω_t \subset \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$ with substantial geometric features. Namely, we consider a variable bottom, smooth obstacles in the flow and a constant background current. We utilize a vortex sheet model introduced by Ambrose, et. al. in arXiv:2108.01786. We show that the water waves problem is locally-in-time well-posed in this geometric setting and study the lifespan of solutions. We then add a damping term and derive evolution equations that account for the damper. Ultimately, we show that the same well-posedness a…
We consider the two-dimensional capillary-gravity water waves problem where the free surface $Γ_t$ intersects the bottom $Γ_b$ at two contact points. In our previous works \cite{MW2, MW3}, the local well-posedness for this problem has been proved with the contact angles less than $π/16$. In this paper, we study the case where the contact angles belong to $(0, π/2)$. It involves much worse singularities generated from corresponding elliptic systems, which have a strong influence on the regularities for the free surface and the velocity field. Combining the theory of singularity decompositions f…
This paper is devoted to the 2D gravity-capillary water waves equations in their Hamiltonian formulation, addressing the general question of proving Morawetz inequalities. We continue the analysis initiated in our previous work, where we have established local energy decay estimates for gravity waves. Here we add surface tension and prove a stronger estimate with a local regularity gain, akin to the smoothing effect for dispersive equations. Our main result holds globally in time and holds for genuinely nonlinear waves, since we are only assuming some very mild uniform Sobolev bounds for the s…
We prove that the 2D finite depth capillary water wave equations admit no solitary wave solutions. This closes the existence/non-existence problem for solitary water waves in 2D, under the classical assumptions of incompressibility and irrotationality, and with the physical parameters being gravity, surface tension and the fluid depth.
In this paper, we prove global regularity, scattering, and the non-existence of small traveling waves for the $3D$ finite depth capillary waves system for small initial data. The non-existence of small traveling waves shows a fundamental difference between the capillary waves ($σ=1, g=0$) and the gravity-capillary waves ($σ=1,$ $ 0< g< 3$) in the finite depth setting. As, for the later case, there exists arbitrary small $L^2$ traveling waves. Different from the water waves system in the infinite depth setting, the quadratic terms of the same system in the finite depth setting are worse due to …
We consider the gravity-capillary water waves equations for a bi-dimensional fluid with a periodic one-dimensional free surface. We prove a rigorous reduction of this system to Birkhoff normal form up to cubic degree. Due to the possible presence of 3-waves resonances for general values of gravity, surface tension and depth, such normal form may be not trivial and exhibit a chaotic dynamics (Wilton-ripples). Nevertheless we prove that for all the values of gravity, surface tension and depth, initial data that are of size $ε$ in a sufficiently smooth Sobolev space lead to a solution that remain…
In this paper we construct periodic capillarity-gravity water waves with an arbitrary bounded vorticity distribution. This is achieved by reexpressing, in the height function formulation of the water wave problem, the boundary condition obtained from Bernoulli's principle as a nonlocal differential equation. This enables us to establish the existence of weak solutions of the problem by using elliptic estimates and bifurcation theory. Secondly, we investigate the a priori regularity of these weak solutions and prove that they are in fact strong solutions of the problem, describing waves with a …
A fundamental question in the study of water waves is the existence and stability of solitary waves. Solitary waves have been proved to exist and have been studied in many interesting situations, and often arise from the balance of different forces/factors influencing the fluid dynamics, e.g. gravity, surface tension or the fluid bottom. However, the existence of solitary waves has remained an open problem in two of the simplest cases, namely for either pure gravity waves or pure capillary waves in infinite depth. In this article we settle both of these questions in two space dimensions. Preci…
We prove an almost global in time existence result of small amplitude space periodic solutions of the 1D gravity-capillary water waves equations with constant vorticity. The result holds for any value of gravity, vorticity and depth and any surface tension belonging to a full measure set. The proof demands a Hamiltonian paradifferential Birkhoff normal form reduction for quasi-linear PDEs in presence of resonant wave interactions: the normal form may be not integrable but it preserves the Sobolev norms thanks to its Hamiltonian nature. A major difficulty is that usual paradifferential calculus…
Fully localised solitary waves are travelling-wave solutions of the three-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem which decay to zero in every horizontal spatial direction. Their existence for water of finite depth has recently been established, and in this article we present an existence theory for water of infinite depth. The governing equations are reduced to a perturbation of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which admits a family of localised solutions. Two of these solutions are symmetric in both horizontal directions and an application of a suitable version of…
We construct small-amplitude solitary traveling gravity-capillary water waves with a finite number of point vortices along a vertical line, on finite depth. This is done using a local bifurcation argument. The properties of the resulting waves are also examined: We find that they depend significantly on the position of the point vortices in the water column.
The classical irrotational capillary-gravity water wave problem described by the Euler equations with a nonlinear free surface boundary condition over a flat bed is considered. A modified flow force has been defined and a new formulation of capillary-gravity waves in the framework of the modified flow force function has been developed. Using bifurcation theory, the local existence of waves of small amplitude is proved.
We prove via explicitly constructed initial data that solutions to the gravity-capillary wave system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ representing a 2d air-water interface immediately fails to be $C^3$ with respect to the initial data if the initial data $(h_0, ψ_0) \in H^{s+\frac12} \otimes H^{s}$ for $s<3$. Similar results hold in $\mathbb{R}^2$ domains with a 1d interface. Furthermore, we discuss the illposedness threshold for the pure gravity water wave system.
Considered in this paper is a bi-directional model for the propagation of interfacial capillary-gravity waves in a two-layer system of fluids with rigid lid condition for the upper layer and lower layer with a much larger or infinite depth. The system is derived from a reformulation of the Euler equations for internal waves with nonnegligible surface tension effects in the interface and the corresponding asymptotic model under the Benjamin-Ono regime. Another unidirectional model, so-called regularized Benjamin equation, generalizing the Benjamin equation, is also introduced. Well-posedness of…
We consider the global bifurcation problem for spatially periodic traveling waves for two-dimensional gravity-capillary vortex sheets. The two fluids have arbitrary constant, non-negative densities (not both zero), the gravity parameter can be positive, negative, or zero, and the surface tension parameter is positive. Thus, included in the parameter set are the cases of pure capillary water waves and gravity-capillary water waves. Our choice of coordinates allows for the possibility that the fluid interface is not a graph over the horizontal. We use a technical reformulation which converts the…
We prove real analyticity of all the streamlines, including the free surface, of a steady stratified flow of water over a flat bed in the absence of stagnation points, with a Hölder continuous Bernoulli function and a Hölder continuously differentiable density function. Furthermore, we show that if the Bernoulli function and the density function possess some Gevrey regularity of index s, then the stream function admits the same Gevrey regularity throughout the fluid domain; in particular if the Gevrey index s equals to 1, then we obtain analyticity of the stream function. The regularity result…
In this paper we consider the steady water wave problem for waves that possess a merely $L_r-$integrable vorticity, with $r\in(1,\infty)$ being arbitrary. We first establish the equivalence of the three formulations--the velocity formulation, the stream function formulation, and the height function formulation-- in the setting of strong solutions, regardless of the value of $r$. Based upon this result and using a suitable notion of weak solution for the height function formulation, we then establish, by means of local bifurcation theory, the existence of small amplitude capillary and capillary…
This paper is concerned with two-dimensional, steady, periodic water waves propagating at the free surface of water either in a flow of finite depth and constant vorticity over an impermeable flat bed or in an irrotational flow of great depth. In both cases, the motion of these waves is assumed to be governed both by surface tension and gravitational forces. By considering a particular scaling regime, it can be shown that both these schemes approach a limiting form, corresponding to flows of great depth where the effect of gravity is neglected. An application of the Implicit Function Theorem d…
Using a nonlocal version of the center manifold theorem and a normal form reduction, we prove the existence of small-amplitude generalized solitary-wave solutions and modulated solitary-wave solutions to the steady gravity-capillary Whitham equation with weak surface tension. Through the application of the center manifold theorem, the nonlocal equation for the solitary wave profiles is reduced to a four-dimensional system of ODEs inheriting reversibility. Along particular parameter curves, relating directly to the classical gravity-capillary water wave problem, the associated linear operator i…
This paper is concerned with two-dimensional, steady, periodic water waves propagating at the free surface of water in a flow of constant vorticity over an impermeable flat bed. The motion of these waves is assumed to be governed both by surface tension and gravitational forces. A new reformulation of this problem is given, which is valid without restriction on the geometry or amplitude of the wave profiles and possesses a structure amenable to global bifurcation. The existence of global curves and continua of solutions bifurcating at certain parameter values from flat, laminar flows is then e…
In this paper we construct small amplitude periodic internal waves traveling at the boundary region between two rotational and homogeneous fluids with different densities. Within a period, the waves we obtain have the property that the gradient of the stream function associated to the fluid beneath the interface vanishes, on the wave surface, at exactly two points. Furthermore, there exists a critical layer which is bounded from above by the wave profile. Besides, we prove, without excluding the presence of stagnation points, that if the vorticity function associated to each fluid in part is r…
This paper is concerned with the eigenvalues and linear inviscid damping of the 2D capillary gravity water waves of finite depth $x_2\in(-h,0)$ linearized at a monotone shear flow $U(x_2)$. Unlike the linearized Euler equation in a fixed channel where eigenvalues exist only in low horizontal wave number $k$, we first prove the linearized capillary gravity wave has two branches of eigenvalues $-ikc^\pm(k)$, where the wave speeds $c^\pm(k)=O(\sqrt{|k|})$ for $|k|\gg1$ have the same asymptotics as the those of the linear irrotational capillary gravity waves. Under the additional assumption of $U"…
We study the transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic waves for the gravity--capillary water-wave problem. The governing equations are the Euler equations for the irrotational flow of an inviscid fluid layer with free surface under the forces of gravity and surface tension. We focus on two open sets of dimensionless parameters $(α,β)$, where $α$ and $β$ are the inverse square of the Froude number and the Weber number, respectively. For each arbitrary but fixed pair $(α,β)$ in one of these sets, two-dimensional traveling periodic waves bifurcate from the trivial constant flow. …
This article is devoted to the Cauchy problem for the 2D gravity-capillary water waves in fluid domains with general bottoms. We prove that the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces is uniquely solvable for data $\frac{1}{4}$ derivatives less regular than the energy threshold (obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily), which corresponds to the gain of Holder regularity of the semiclassical Strichartz estimate for the fully nonlinear system. To obtain this result, we establish global, quantitative results for the paracomposition theory of Alinhac.
We present an existence and stability theory for gravity-capillary solitary waves with constant vorticity on the surface of a body of water of finite depth. Exploiting a rotational version of the classical variational principle, we prove the existence of a minimiser of the wave energy $\mathcal H$ subject to the constraint $\mathcal I=2μ$, where $\mathcal I$ is the wave momentum and $0< μ\ll 1$. Since $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal I$ are both conserved quantities a standard argument asserts the stability of the set $D_μ$ of minimisers: solutions starting near $D_μ$ remain close to $D_μ$ in a suit…
We study the existence of traveling wave solutions to a unidirectional shallow water model which incorporates the full linear dispersion relation for both gravitational and capillary restoring forces. Using functional analytic techniques, we show that for small surface tension (corresponding to Bond numbers between $0$ and ${1}/{3}$) there exists small amplitude solitary waves that decay to asymptotically small periodic waves at spatial infinity. The size of the oscillations in the far field are shown to be small beyond all algebraic orders in the amplitude of the wave. We also present numeric…
