For extremal black holes, one can construct simpler, limiting spacetimes that describe the geometry near degenerate horizons. Since these spacetimes are known to have enhanced symmetry, the limiting objects coincide for different solutions. We show that this occurs for strongly magnetised Kerr-Newman solution, and how this is related to physical Meissner effect of expulsion of magnetic fields from extremal black holes.
After a brief summary of the basic properties of stationary spacetimes representing rotating, charged black holes in strong axisymmetric magnetic fields, we concentrate on extremal cases, for which the horizon surface gravity vanishes. We investigate their properties by constructing simpler spacetimes that exhibit their geometries near degenerate horizons. Starting from the symmetry arguments we find that the near-horizon geometries of extremal magnetised Kerr-Newman black holes can be characterised by just one dimensionless parameter: "effective Kerr-Newman mixing angle". Employing the near-h…
The work on black holes immersed in external stationary magnetic fields is reviewed in both test-field approximation and within exact solutions. In particular we pay attention to the effect of the expulsion of the flux of external fields across charged and rotating black holes which are approaching extremal states. Recently this effect has been shown to occur for black hole solutions in string theory and Kaluza-Klein theory.
Extremal black holes tend to expel magnetic and electric fields. Fields are unable to reach the horizon because the length of the black hole throat blows up in the extremal limit. The length of the throat is related to the amount of entanglement between modes on either side of the horizon. So it is natural to try to relate the black hole Meissner effect to entanglement. We derive the black hole Meissner effect directly from the low temperature limit of two-point functions in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. Then we discuss several new examples of the black hole Meissner effect, its applications to a…
In our previous work [N. Gürlebeck, M. Scholtz, Phys. Rev. D 95 064010 (2017)], we have shown that electric and magnetic fields are expelled from the horizons of extremal, stationary and axially symmetric uncharged black holes; this is called the Meissner effect for black holes. Here, we generalize this result in several directions. First, we allow that the black hole carries charge, which requires a generalization of the definition of the Meissner effect. Next, we introduce the notion of almost isolated horizons, which is weaker than the usual notion of isolated horizons, since the geometry o…
Spinning black holes tend to expel magnetic fields. In this way they are similar to superconductors. It has been a persistent concern that this black hole "Meissner effect" could quench jet power at high spins. This would make it impossible for the rapidly rotating black holes in Cyg X-1 and GRS 1915+105 to drive Blandford-Znajek jets. We give a simple geometrical argument why fields which become entirely radial near the horizon are not expelled by the Meissner effect and may continue to power jets up to the extremal limit. A simple and natural example is a split-monopole field. We stress that…
We briefly summarise the basic properties of spacetimes representing rotating, charged black holes in strong axisymmetric magnetic fields. We concentrate on extremal cases, for which the horizon surface gravity vanishes. We investigate their properties by finding simpler spacetimes that exhibit their geometries near degenerate horizons. Employing the simpler geometries obtained by near-horizon limiting description we analyse the Meissner effect of magnetic field expulsion from extremal black holes.
We study hidden symmetries, the symmetries associated with the Killing tensors, of the near horizon geometry of odd-dimensional Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in two limits: generic extremal and extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limits. Starting from Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in ellipsoidal coordinates which admits integrable geodesic equations, we obtain the near horizon extremal/EVH geometries and their principal and Killing tensors by taking the near horizon limit. We explicitly demonstrate that geodesic equations are separable and integrable on theses near horizon geometries. We also compute the con…
We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, …
We consider non-expanding shear free (NE-SF) null surface geometries embeddable as extremal Killing horizons to the second order in Einstein vacuum spacetimes. A NE-SF null surface geometry consists of a degenerate metric tensor and a consistent torsion free covariant derivative. We derive the constraints implied by the existence of an embedding. The first constraint is well known as the near horizon geometry equation. The second constraint we find is new. The constraints lead to a complete characterization of those NE-SF null geometries that are embeddable in the extremal Kerr spacetime. Our …
Any spacetime containing a degenerate Killing horizon, such as an extremal black hole, possesses a well-defined notion of a near-horizon geometry. We review such near-horizon geometry solutions in a variety of dimensions and theories in a unified manner. We discuss various general results including horizon topology and near-horizon symmetry enhancement. We also discuss the status of the classification of near-horizon geometries in theories ranging from vacuum gravity to Einstein-Maxwell theory and supergravity theories. Finally, we discuss applications to the classification of extremal black h…
We consider the near-horizon geometries of extremal, rotating black hole solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in four and five dimensions. We assume the existence of one rotational symmetry in 4d, two commuting rotational symmetries in 5d and in both cases non-toroidal horizon topology. In 4d we determine the most general near-horizon geometry of such a black hole, and prove it is the same as the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr-AdS(4) black hole. In 5d, without a cosmological constant, we determine all possible near-horizon geometries …
We discuss the propagation of scalars in a large class of non-extremal black hole and black p-brane geometries in generic dimensions. We show that the radial wave equation near the horizon possesses the SL(2,R) structure in every case; approximately it takes the form of the wave equation in the SL(2,R) (AdS_3) background and has a symmetry related to the T-duality of the string model in that geometry. We see a close connection to two and three dimensional black holes. We also find that, in some parameter region, the absorption cross-sections by the black objects take the form expected from a c…
Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique near-horizon geometry, itself a solution of the field equations. These latter spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and most importantly, retain properties of the original black hole which are intrinsic to the event horizon. After reviewing general features of near-horizon geometries, such as SO(2,1) symmetry enhancement, I report on recent work on stationary, charged extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions and present a classification of near-horiz…
We construct a set of extremal D1-D5-P solutions, by taking appropriate limits in a known family of nonextremal 3-charge solutions. The extremal geometries turn out to be completely smooth, with no horizon and no singularity. The solutions have the right charges to be the duals of a family of CFT microstates which are obtained by spectral flow from the NS vacuum.
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG), are geometries which may appear in the near horizon region of the extremal black holes. These geometries have $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\!\times\!U(1)^n$ isometry, and constitute a family of solutions to the theory under consideration. In the first part of this report, their thermodynamic properties are reviewed, and their three universal laws are derived. In addition, at the end of the first part, the role of these laws in black hole thermodynamics is presented. In the second part of this thesis, we review building their classical phase space in the Einstein-Hi…
The NHEG algebra is an extension of Virasoro introduced in [arXiv:1503.07861]; it describes the symplectic symmetries of $(n+4)$-dimensional Near Horizon Extremal Geometries with $SL(2,R)\times U(1)^{n+1}$ isometry. In this work we construct the NHEG group and classify the (coadjoint) orbits of its action on phase space. As we show, the group consists of maps from an $n$-torus to the Virasoro group, so its orbits are bundles of standard Virasoro coadjoint orbits over $T^n$. We also describe the unitary representations that are expected to follow from the quantization of these orbits, and displ…
We investigate the zero entropy limit of the near horizon geometries of D=4 and D=5 general extremal black holes with SL(2,R)xU(1)^{D-3} symmetry. We derive some conditions on the geometries from expectation of regularity. We then show that an AdS_3 structure emerges in a certain scaling limit, though the periodicity shrinks to zero. We present some examples to see the above concretely. We also comment on some implications to the Kerr/CFT correspondence.
The fact that one must evaluate the near-extremal and near-horizon limits of Kerr space-time in a specific order, is shown to a lead to discontinuity in the extremal limit, such that this limiting space-time differs nontrivially from the precisely extremal space-time. This is established by first showing a discontinuity in the extremal limit of the maximal analytic extension of the Kerr geometry, given by Carter. Next, we examine the ISCO of the exactly extremal Kerr geometry and show that on the event horizon of the extremal Kerr black hole, it coincides with the principal null geodesic gener…
We study the gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar field perturbations on the near-horizon geometries of the even-dimensional extremal Myers-Perry black holes. By dimensional reduction, the perturbation equations are reduced to effective equations of motion in AdS$_2$. We find that some modes in the gravitational perturbations violate the Breitenlöhner-Freedman bound in AdS$_2$. This result suggests that the even-dimensional (near-)extremal Myers-Perry black holes are unstable against gravitational perturbations. We also discuss implications of our results to the Kerr-CFT correspondence.

In Einstein-Maxwell theory, magnetic flux lines are `expelled' from a black hole as extremality is approached, in the sense that the component of the field strength normal to the horizon goes to zero. Thus, extremal black holes are found to exhibit the sort of `Meissner effect' which is characteristic of superconducting media. We review some of the evidence for this effect, and do present new evidence for it using recently found black hole solutions in string theory and Kaluza-Klein theory. We also present some new solutions, which arise naturally in string theory, which are non-superconductin…
We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extrema…
We investigate dynamics of probe particles moving in the near-horizon limit of extremal Myers-Perry black holes in arbitrary dimensions. Employing ellipsoidal coordinates we show that this problem is integrable and separable, extending the results of the odd dimensional case discussed in arXiv:1703.00713. We find the general solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for these systems and present explicit expressions for the Liouville integrals, discuss Killing tensors and the associated constants of motion. We analyze special cases of the background near-horizon geometry were the system posses…
The ``cosmic censorship conjecture'' asserts that all singularities arising from gravitational collapse are hidden within black holes. We investigate this conjecture in a setup of interest for tests of General Relativity: black hole solutions which are parametrically small deviations away from the Kerr solution. These solutions have an upper bound on rotation, beyond which a naked singularity is visible to outside observers. We study whether these (generic) spacetimes can be spun-up past extremality with point particles or accretion disks. Our results show that cosmic censorship is preserved f…
We consider extremal black hole solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in dimensions greater than five. We prove that the near-horizon geometry of any such black hole must possess an SO(2,1) symmetry in a special case where one has an enhanced rotational symmetry group. We construct examples of vacuum near-horizon geometries using the extremal Myers-Perry black holes and boosted Myers-Perry strings. The latter lead to near-horizon geometries of black ring topology, which in odd spacetime dimensions have the correct number rotational symmetries to describe an asymptotically flat black objec…
A fascinating property of extremal Kerr black hole (BH) is that it could be act as a particle accelerator with infinite high center-of-mass (CM) energy \cite{bsw}. In this note, we would like to discuss about such fascinating result and to point out that this infinite energy at the event horizon comes solely due \emph{to the singular nature of the extremal limit}. We also show that a non-extremal Kerr BH can \emph{not} transform into extremal Kerr BH by the Bañados-Silk-West mechanism. Moreover, we discuss about three possible geometries (near extremal, purely extremal and near horizon of extr…
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with $ SL(2,R) \times U(1)^N $ (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out entropy and entropy perturbation laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG an…
We present a new class of near-horizon geometries which solve Einstein's vacuum equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in all even dimensions greater than four. Spatial sections of the horizon are inhomogeneous S^2-bundles over any compact Kaehler-Einstein manifold. For a given base, the solutions are parameterised by one continuous parameter (the angular momentum) and an integer which determines the topology of the horizon. In six dimensions the horizon topology is either S^2 x S^2 or CP^2 # -CP^2. In higher dimensions the S^2-bundles are always non-trivial, and for a fixed ba…
There are two mathematical relativity frameworks generalizing the black hole theory: the theory of isolated horizons (IH) and the theory of near horizon geometries (NHG). We outline here and discuss the derivation of the NHG from the theory of IH by composing spacetimes from IH. The simplest but still quite general class of solutions to Einstein's equations of this type defines spacetimes foliated by Killing horizons emanating from extremal horizons. That derivation, clearly being a link between the two frameworks, seems to be unknown to the NHG researchers and is hardly acknowledged in review…
The theory of non-expanding horizons (NEH) geometry and the theory of near horizon geometries (NHG) are two mathematical relativity frameworks generalizing the black hole theory. From the point of view of the NEHs theory, a NHG is just a very special case of a spacetime containing an NEH of many extra symmetries. It can be obtained as the Horowitz limit of a neighborhood of an arbitrary extremal Killing horizon. An unexpected relation between the two of them, was discovered in the study of spacetimes foliated by a family of NEHs. The class of 4-dimensional NHG solutions (either vacuum or coupl…
We obtain new solutions of Einsteinian cubic gravity coupled to a Maxwell field that describe the near-horizon geometry of charged and rotating black holes. We show that the AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ near-horizon geometry of Reissner-Nordström black holes receives no corrections, but deviations with respect to the extremal Kerr-Newman solution appear as we turn on the angular momentum. We construct the profile of these corrected geometries using both numerical methods and slowly-spinning expansions, but we also find additional solutions that do not reduce to AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ geometrie…
The tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2\times S^2$. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based …
The relationship between Hawking radiation emitted by non extremal and extremal Reissner Nordstrom black holes is critically analyzed. A careful study of a series of regular collapsing geometries reveals that the stress energy tensor stays regular in the extremal limit and is smoothly connected to that of non extremal black holes. The unexpected feature is that the late time transients which played little role in the non extremal case are necessary to preserve the well defined character of the flux in the extremal case. The known singular behavior of the static energy density of extremal black…
A. Ghosh and P. Mitra made the proposal how to explain the area law for the entropy of extreme black holes in some model calculations. I argue that their approach implicitly operates with strongly singular geometries and says nothing about the contribution of regular metrics of extreme black holes into the partition function.
We construct the first smooth horizonless supergravity solutions that have two topologically-nontrivial three-cycles supported by flux, and that have the same mass and charges as a non-extremal D1-D5-P black hole. Our configurations are solutions to six-dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to a tensor multiplet, and uplift to solutions of Type IIB supergravity. The solutions represent multi-center generalizations of the non-BPS solutions of Jejjala, Madden, Ross, and Titchener, which have over-rotating angular momenta. By adding an additional Gibbons-Hawking center, we succeed in lowering…
We analyze the $δ=2$ Tomimatsu-Sato spacetime in the context of the proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence. This 4-dimensional vacuum spacetime is asymptotically flat and has a well-defined ADM mass and angular momentum, but also involves several exotic features including a naked ring singularity, and two disjoint Killing horizons separated by a region with closed timelike curves and a rod-like conical singularity. We demonstrate that the near horizon geometry belongs to a general class of Ricci-flat metrics with $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\times U(1)$ symmetry that includes both the extremal Kerr and extrema…
The near-horizon limit of the extremal (weakly) isolated horizon is obtained under the Bondi-like coordinates. For the vacuum case, explicit coordinate transformation relating the near-horizon metric under the Bondi-like coordinates and the standard Poincaré-type or global near-horizon metric of the extremal Kerr black hole is found, which shows that the two geometries are the same. Combined with the known thermodynamics of the (weakly) isolated horizon, it is argued that the Kerr/CFT correspondence can be generalized to the case of a large class of non-stationary extremal black holes.
We consider the classification of static near-horizon geometries of stationary extremal (not necessarily BPS) black hole solutions of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a Chern-Simons term with coupling xi (with xi=1 corresponding to supergravity). Assuming the black holes have two rotational symmetries, we show that their near-horizon geometries are either the direct product AdS_3 X S^2 or a warped product of AdS_2 and compact 3d space. In the AdS_2 case we are able to classify all possible near-horizon geometries with no magnetic fields. There are two such solutions: the dir…
We show that near-horizon geometries in the presence of a positive cosmological constant cannot exist with ring topology. In particular, de Sitter black rings with vanishing surface gravity do not exist. Our result relies on a known mathematical theorem which is a straightforward consequence of a type of energy condition for a modified Ricci tensor, similar to the curvature-dimension conditions for the $m$-Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor.
We revisit the 4D generalized black hole geometries, obtained by us [1], with a renewed interest, to unfold some aspects of effective gravity in a noncommutative D3-brane formalism. In particular, we argue for the existence of extra dimensions in the gravity decoupling limit in the theory. We show that the theory is rather described by an ordinary geometry and is governed by an effective string theory in 5D. The extremal black hole geometry $AdS_5$ obtained in effective string theory is shown to be in precise agreement with the gravity dual proposed for D3-brane in a constant magnetic field. K…
We study thermodynamic properties of Myers-Perry black holes by deriving explicit fundamental relations from which we can obtain the temperature and specific heat in terms of explicit control parameters in arbitrary dimensions. Using the definition of extremal black holes we establish the generalized Kerr bound in arbitrary dimension. We study thermodynamic geometries of the Myers-Perry black holes with equal angular momenta in arbitrary dimensions and draw thermodynamic cone diagrams which capture the extremal limits of the black holes. Thermodynamic state space is represented geometrically a…
We consider a truncation of type IIB supergravity on four-torus where in addition to the Ramond-Ramond 2-form field, the Ramond-Ramond axion (w) and the NS-NS 2-form field (B) are also retained. In the (w, B) sector we construct a linearised perturbation carrying only left moving momentum on two-charge non-extremal D1-D5 geometries of Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. The perturbation is found to be smooth everywhere and normalizable. It is constructed by matching to leading order solutions of the perturbation equations in the inner and outer regions of the geometry.
In arXiv:1310.3727 we formulated and derived the three universal laws governing Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG). In this work we focus on the Entropy Perturbation Law (EPL) which, similarly to the first law of black hole thermodynamics, relates perturbations of the charges labeling perturbations around a given NHEG to the corresponding entropy perturbation. We show that field perturbations governed by the linearized equations of motion and symmetry conditions which we carefully specify, satisfy the EPL. We also show that these perturbations are limited to those coming from difference o…
A large class of extremal and near-extremal four dimensional black holes in M-theory feature near horizon geometries that contain three dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. Globally, these geometries are derived from AdS_3 by discrete identifications. The microstates of such black holes can be counted by exploiting the conformal symmetry induced on the anti-de Sitter boundary, and the result agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. This approach, pioneered by Strominger, clarifies the physical nature of the black hole microstates. It also suggests that recent analyses of the r…
Stationary axisymmetric magnetic fields are expelled from outer horizons of black holes as they become extremal. Extreme black holes exhibit Meissner effect also within exact Einstein--Maxwell theory and in string theories in higher dimensions. Since maximally rotating black holes are expected to be astrophysically most important, the expulsion of the magnetic flux from their horizons represents a potential threat to an electromagnetic mechanism launching the jets at the account of black-hole rotation.
