I extract new limits on the coefficient of the effective operator generated by tree-level graviton exchange in large extra dimensions from $pp \rightarrow jj$ angular distributions at LHC: $M_T > 6.8$ TeV (CMS after $2.6 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity) and $M_T > 8.3$ TeV (ATLAS after $3.6 fb^{-1}$). I also compare such limits to the ones obtained using the full graviton amplitude, and discuss the impact of additional constrains arising from other datasets, such as Mono-Jet.
Nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs), collinearly factorizable in perturbative QCD (pQCD), are currently extracted most reliably from global analyses of experimental data. Recently, the progress in this field has been driven mainly by the new data from LHC proton-lead collisions. I will review the progress in using data from LHC Run 1 and 2 and also hint at some opportunities and challenges that we face during LHC Run 3.
The LHC will open up a new regime in high energy physics. The resultant greatly expanded discovery reach makes it incumbant on LHC experimenters to be prepared for discoveries, even in the very early days. To that end a variety of Standard Model processes must be validated in any LHC experiment in order to establish that the responses of the detector are well understood.
We explore $t-b-τ$ Yukawa unification (YU) in a supersymmetric $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R $ model without imposing a discrete left-right (L-R) symmetry. A number of interesting solutions that are compatible with $t-b-τ$ YU, LSP neutralino dark matter (DM), and LHC and other experimental constraints are identified. In particular, they include gluino-neutralino and stau-neutralino co-annihilation scenarios, where the NLSP gluino mass can range from 1-3 TeV. Higgsino-like dark matter solutions are also identified for which gluino masses can approach 5 TeV or so. This scenario will be …
We present a global analysis of the Higgs and electroweak sector based on LHC Run II and electroweak precision observables. We show which measurements provide the leading constraints on Higgs-related operators, and how the achieved LHC precision makes it necessary to combine rate measurements with electroweak precision observables. The SFitter framework allows us to include kinematic distributions beyond pre-defined ATLAS and CMS observables, independently study correlations, and avoid Gaussian assumptions for theory uncertainties. These Run II results are a step towards a precision physics pr…
We report on recent studies of photon-induced (PI) contributions to di-lepton production and their implications for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) $Z^\prime$-bosons searches at the LHC.
The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, with its experimental discovery in 2012, has long been an interesting particle to study with the intention of exploring new physics ideas beyond the SM (BSM). Its properties are still not well understood, and there are several features in LHC Run 1 and Run 2 data which point at the possibility of extensions to the SM Higgs sector. This work explores the Madala hypothesis, which is the introduction of a heavy scalar (the Madala boson) to the SM, in addition to a real scalar $S$ and dark matter (DM) candidate $χ$. This hypothesis has previously been used to e…
Some supersymmetric models after the recent LHC reports are discussed. Especially, the light Higgs boson around 125GeV is attempted to be accommodated. An extra Z' from GUTs, and the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons in supersymmetric extension of the standard model are also discussed.
In some extensions of the Standard Model, Yukawa couplings of the physical Higgs boson can be deviated from those in the Standard Model. We study a possibility whether or not such anomalous Yukawa couplings are consistent with the LHC Run 1 data. It is found that sizable deviations of top and bottom (and tau) Yukawa couplings from the Standard Model predictions can nicely fit the data. New physics beyond the Standard Model can be revealed through more precise measurements of such anomalous Yukawa couplings at the LHC Run 2 in the near future. We also discuss a simple setup which can leads to a…
The main production channels of the Higgs boson at hadron colliders are briefly reviewed and recent developments in the calculation of QCD effects are discussed.
We analyze the potential of the first LHC physics run, assuming 1/fb at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV, to discover Supersymmetry (SUSY). The results are based on SUSY parameter fits following a frequentist approach. They include the experimental constraints from electroweak precision data, (g-2)_mu, B-physics and cosmological data. The two SUSY models under consideration are the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking mass parameters, and a model with common non-universal Higgs mass parameters in the superpotential (NUHM1). We find that large parts of the regions preferred at the…
Current discussions of the allowed two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) parameter space after LHC Run 1 and the prospects for Run 2 are commonly phrased in the context of a quasi-degenerate spectrum for the new scalars. Here we discuss the generic situation of a 2HDM with a non-degenerate spectrum for the new scalars. This is highly motivated from a cosmological perspective since it naturally leads to a strongly first order electroweak phase transition that could explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. While constraints from measurements of Higgs signal strengths do not change, thos…
I briefly review the progress in perturbative QCD calculations in LEP era and discuss the prospects for the extension of their accuracy to higher orders.
We provide an update of the global fits of the couplings of the 125.5 GeV Higgs boson using all publicly available experimental results from Run-1 of the LHC as per Summer 2014. The fits are done by means of the new public code Lilith 1.0. We present a selection of results given in terms of signal strengths, reduced couplings, and for the Two-Higgs-Doublet Models of Type I and II.
The Inert Doublet Model (IDM) is a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that aims to address the naturalness problem, electroweak baryogenesis and accommodate a viable dark matter (DM) candidate, along with a rich phenomenlogy in terms of collider signatures. In this note, we address the constraints on the IDM by recasting dilepton + missing energy searches performed for Supersymmetry at LHC run-1 using Madanalysis5.
We study low-scale gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models with a very light gravitino of mass $\mathcal{O}(1)$ eV. The cosmological upper bound on the gravitino mass and the collider constraints on the sparticle masses give a significant impact on such models. We apply the latest results of the LHC to these models and obtain the current constraints. We find that perturbatively calculable classes of low-scale gauge mediation models can be largely excluded.
I present results on continuing updates in PDFs within the framework now called MMHT14 due to both theory improvements and the inclusion of new data sets, including most of the up-to-date LHC data. A new set of PDFs is essentially finalised, with no changes expected to the PDFs presented here.
We present updated LHC limits on the minimal universal extra dimensions (MUED) model from the Run 2 searches. We scan the parameter space against a number of searches implemented in the public code \textsc{CheckMATE} and derive up-to-date limits on the MUED parameter space from 13 TeV searches. The strongest constraints come from a search dedicated to squarks and gluinos with one isolated lepton, jets and missing transverse energy. In the procedure we take into account initial state radiation and stress its importance in the MUED searches, which is not always appreciated.
The full exploitation of the increasingly precise LHC measurements is essential in order to reduce the uncertainty of theoretical predictions at hadron colliders. The NNPDF2.3 fit was the first PDF determination including the effect of the early LHC data. Here the new NNPDF3.0 PDF set is announced and its main features are presented. The novel NNPDF analysis is based on an improved fitting methodology, statistically validated by closure tests. Over a thousand new data points are included, both the recent HERA II measurements and a wide set of new LHC data. In this contribution details on the e…
The Inert Doublet Model (IDM) is one of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model that can provide a viable dark matter (DM) candidate. Despite its simplicity, it predicts a versatile phenomenology both for cosmology and for the Large Hadron Collider. We briefly summarize the status of searches for IDM dark matter in direct DM detection experiments and the LHC, focusing on the impact of the latter on the model parameter space. In particular, we discuss the consequences of the Higgs boson discovery as well as those of searches for dileptons accompanied by missing transverse energy during th…
We review that the heavy CP-even MSSM Higgs boson is still a viable candidate to explain the Higgs signal at 125 GeV. This is possible in a highly constrained parameter region, that will be probed by LHC searches for the CP-odd Higgs boson and the charged Higgs boson in the near future. We briefly discuss the new benchmark scenarios that can be employed to maximize the sensitivity of the experimental analysis to this interpretation.
We discuss the current status of theoretical and experimental constraints on the real Higgs singlet extension of the Standard Model. For the second neutral (non-standard) Higgs boson the full mass range from 1 GeV to 1 TeV accessible at past and current collider experiments is considered. We present benchmark scenarios for searches for an additional Higgs state in the real Higgs singlet extension of the Standard Model in Run 2 of the LHC. We furthermore discuss electroweak corrections to the H to hh partial decay width within this model.
Many theories beyond the Standard Model predict the existence of colored scalar states, known as sgluons, lying in the adjoint representation of the QCD gauge group. In scenarios where they are top-philic, sgluons are expected to be copiously pair-produced at the LHC via strong interactions with decays into pairs of top quarks or gluons. Consequently, sgluons can be sought in multijet and multitop events at the LHC. We revisit two LHC Run I analyses in which events featuring either the same-sign dileptonic decay of a four-top-quark system or its single leptonic decay are probed. Adopting a sim…
The Madala hypothesis postulates a new heavy scalar, H, which explains several independent anomalous features seen in ATLAS and CMS data simultaneously. It has already been discussed and constrained in the literature by Run 1 results, and its underlying theory has been explored under the interpretation of a two Higgs doublet model coupled with a scalar singlet, $S$. When applying the hypothesis to Run 2 results, it can be shown that the constraints from the data are compatible with those obtained using Run 1 results.
The LHC Higgs can be identified as the technidilaton, a composite scalar, arising as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson for the spontaneous breaking of scale symmetry in walking technicolor. One interesting candidate for the walking technicolor is the QCD with the large number of fermion flavors, involving the one-family model having the eight-fermion flavors. The smallness of the technidilaton mass can be ensured by the generic walking feature, Miransky scaling, and the presence of the "anti-Veneziano limit" characteristic to the large-flavor walking scenario. To tell the standard-model Higgs fro…
We consider a model where the electroweak symmetry breaking is driven by strong dynamics, resulting in an electroweak doublet scalar condensate, and transmitted to the standard model matter fields via another electroweak doublet scalar. At low energies the effective theory therefore shares features with a type-I two Higgs doublet model. However, important differences arise due to the rich composite spectrum expected to contain new vector resonances accessible at the LHC. We carry out a systematic analysis of the vector resonance signals at LHC and find that the model remains viable, but will b…
We explore the opportunity to look for quark compositeness in the early stages of the LHC running by analyzing high-$E_T$ dijet production. The quark substructure that will manifest itself by affecting various kinematic distributions at the center-of-mass energy $E_{CM}$=10 TeV and in the integrated luminosity range from 0.5 to 10 fb$^{-1}$ is investigated. The estimation of the characteristic energy scale $Λ$, based on the novel, potentially powerful observable, is found to be sensitive to the sign of the interference between Standard Model and four-fermion contact interactions. We find the l…
In the recent paper on "The Higgs Legacy of the LHC Run I" we interpreted the LHC Higgs results in terms of an effective Lagrangian using the SFitter framework. For the on-shell Higgs analysis of rates and kinematic distributions we relied on a linear representation based on dimension-6 operators with a simplified fermion sector. In this addendum we describe how the extension of Higgs couplings modifications in a linear dimension-6 Lagrangian can be formally understood in terms of the non-linear effective field theory. It turns out that our previous results can be translated to the non-linear …
We discuss the current status of theoretical and experimental constraints on the real Higgs singlet extension of the Standard Model. For the second neutral (non-standard) Higgs boson the mass range up to 1 TeV accessible at past and current collider experiments is considered. We furthermore discuss electroweak corrections to the H to hh partial decay width within this model.
We investigate the implications for supersymmetry from an assumed absence of any signal in the first period of LHC data taking at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy and with 1 to 7 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity. We consider the zero-lepton plus four jets and missing transverse energy signature, and perform a combined fit of low-energy measurements, the dark matter relic density constraint and potential LHC exclusions within a minimal supergravity model. A non-observation of supersymmetry in the first period of LHC data taking would still allow for an acceptable description of low-energy data and t…
Leading order study of direct photon production from proton-proton collisions, in the framework of Minimal (Seiberg-Witten) Non-Commutative Standard Model (NCSM), taking into account the Earth-rotation effects. We found that relative non-commutative contributions increase significantly at very high photon transverse momentum. Therefore, using Run-1 (\sqrt{s}= 8 TeV) and Run-2 (\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV) ATLAS experimental data of inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section, TeV-Scale bounds of the non-commutativity (NC) parameter are obtained. For space-space non-commutativity, we obtain: Λb=1.145 \…
We examine the Higgs triple coupling in MSSM and NMSSM under current constraints, which include the LHC measurements, Higgs data, B physics, electroweak precision observables, relic density and so on. The ratio $λ^{\rm MSSM}_{hhh}/λ^{\rm SM}_{hhh}$ is above 0.97, due to the highly constrained parameter space. While the ratio $λ^{\rm NMSSM}_{hhh}/λ^{\rm SM}_{hhh}$ can reach 0.1 under current constraints. The precise measurement in future collider will give a tighter constraint to the Higgs triple coupling in MSSM and NMSSM.
We present the latest results from the MasterCode Collaboration on supersymmetric models, in particular on the CMSSM, the NUHM1, the NUHM2 and the pMSSM. We combine the data from LHC Run I with astrophysical observables, flavor and electroweak precision observables. We determine the best fit regions of these models and analyze the discovery potential of squarks and gluinos at LHC Run II and direct detection experiments.
We examine the leptophilic two Higgs doublet model with fermionic dark matter, considering the range of experimental constraints on the Higgs sector. The measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs from the LHC Run-I allow us to focus on those remaining processes that may play an important role at colliders. We find that the leptophilic model allows for a much lighter Higgs than in other two-Higgs models, although discovery at the LHC will be difficult. Adding a dark matter sector motivated by supersymmetric extensions of the leptophilic model, we find the existing parameter space can accommodate constr…
The LHC potential for discovering doubly-charged vector bileptons is investigated considering the measurable process $p p$ $\rightarrow$ $μ^{\mp}μ^{\mp}μ^{\pm}μ^{\pm} X$. The study is performed assuming different bilepton and leptoquark masses. The process cross-section is calculated at leading-order using the \textsc{Calchep} package. Combining the calculation with the latest ATLAS experiment results at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, bounds on bilepton masses based on LHC data are derived for the first time. The results exclude bileptons masses in the range of 200 GeV to 500 GeV at 95\% C.…
Supersymmetry, a new symmetry that relates bosons and fermions in particle physics, still escapes observation. Search for SUSY is one of the main aims of the recently launched Large Hadron Collider. The other possible manifestation of SUSY is the Dark Matter in the Universe. The present lectures contain a brief introduction to supersymmetry in particle physics. The main notions of supersymmetry are introduced. The supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model - the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model - is considered in more detail. Phenomenological features of the MSSM as well as possible e…
We review the next generation global PDF sets: NNPDF3.0, MMHT14 and CT14. We describe the global datasets, particularly the new data from LHC Run 1, recent developments in QCD theory and PDF methodology, improvements in combination and delivery, and future prospects for parton determination at Run 2.
Relatively light stops in gauge mediation models are usually made compatible with the Higgs mass of 125 GeV by introducing direct Higgs-messenger couplings. We show that such couplings are not necessary in a simple and predictive model that combines minimal gauge mediation and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). We show that one can obtain a 125 GeV Standard Model-like Higgs boson with stops as light as 1.1 TeV, thanks to the mixing of the Higgs with a singlet state at ${\cal O}(90-100)$ GeV that can explain the LEP excess. In this scenario the singlet-higgs-higgs superf…
The first run of the LHC showed hints of a new resonance with mass near $1.9$ TeV decaying into electroweak gauge boson pairs as well as into dijets. While Run 2 has neither confirmed nor ruled out such a resonance, it has yielded new constraints on models attempting to explain these decays. Additionally in $W'$ models where this new resonance is a charged vector boson that is a weak isospin singlet there is the potential for conflict with the electroweak precision $T$ parameter. We construct variants of a $W'$ resonance model that provide an excellent fit to both Run 1 and Run 2 data, as well…
A review of direct searches for new particles predicted by Supersymmetry after the first run of the LHC is proposed. This review is based on the results provided by the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
We continue our investigation of gauge theories in which the Higgs boson arises as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) and top-partners arise as bound states of three hyperfermions. All models have additional pNGBs in their spectrum that should be accessible at LHC. We analyze the patterns of symmetry breaking and present all relevant couplings of the pNGBs with the gauge fields. We discuss how vacuum misalignment and a mass for the pNGBs is generated by a loop-induced potential. Finally, we paint a very broad, qualitative, picture of the kind of experimental signatures these models give ris…
In our previous paper, we provided general effective Higgs interactions for the lightest Higgs boson $h$ (SM-like) and a heavier neutral Higgs boson $H$ based on the effective Lagrangian formulation up to the dim-6 interactions, and then proposed two sensitive processes for probing $H$. We showed in several examples that the resonance peak of $H$ and its dim-6 effective coupling constants (ECC) can be detected at the LHC Run 2 with reasonable integrated luminosity. In this paper, we further perform a more thorough study of the most sensitive process, $pp\to VH^\ast\to VVV$, on the information …
The Split-Family supersymmetry is a model in which the sfermion masses of the first two generations are in $\mathcal{O}(100\text{-}1000)$ GeV while that of the third one is in $\mathcal{O}(10)$TeV. With such a hierarchical spectrum, the deviation of the muon $g-2$ and the observed Higgs boson mass are explained simultaneously. In this paper, we revisit the Split-Family SUSY model in light of the updated LHC constraints. We also study the flavor changing neutral current problems in the model. As we will show, the problems do not lead to stringent constraints when the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa m…
We discuss the collider bounds on minimal Universal Extra Dimension (mUED) model from LHC Run-I and II data. The phenomenology of mUED is determined by only two parameters namely, the compactification scale ($R^{-1}$) of the extra dimension and cutoff scale ($Λ$) of the theory. The characteristic feature of mUED is the occurrence of nearly degenerate mass spectrum for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) particles and hence, soft leptons, soft jets at the collider experiments. The degree of degeneracy of KK-mass spectrum crucially depends on $Λ$. The strongest direct bound on $R^{-1}$ ($\sim $950 GeV for lar…
The first run of the LHC was successful in that it saw the discovery of the elusive Higgs boson, a particle that is consistent with the SM hypothesis. There are a number of excesses in Run 1 ATLAS and CMS results which can be interpreted as being due to the existence of another heavier scalar particle. This particle has decay modes which we have studied using LHC Run 1 data. Using a minimalistic model, we can predict the kinematics of these final states and compare the prediction against data directly. A statistical combination of these results shows that a best fit point is found for a heavy …
This is a brief review of charge asymmetries in top-antitop quark production at the LHC. Proposed asymmetry observables in processes of associated top-pair production $t\bar t$ + jet, $t\bar t + W$, and $t\bar t + γ$ are analyzed and compared. While the focus is on standard-model predictions, we also comment on the sensitivity to possible new physics and observation prospects during the second runtime of the LHC.
We revisit the light pseudoscalar $A_1$ in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with partial universality at some high unification scale in order to delineate the parameter space regions consistent with up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints and examine to what extent this state can be probed by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during Run 2. We find that it can be accessible through a variety of signatures proceeding via $A_1\to τ^+τ^-$ and/or $b\bar b$, the former assuming hadronic decays and the latter two $b$-tags within a fat jet or two separate slim ones. …
The document is prepared for the LCWS2016 conference proceedings. The expected status of Higgs physics at the end of Run-3 is presented. The current Run-2 status is briefly reviewed, and the expected Higgs reach after the HL-LHC period is also summarized for some channels.
The search for new physics is a major goal of the LHC physics program. As excitement grows for the upcoming start of Run 2, I review the CMS and ATLAS searches for physics beyond the Standard Model from Run 1 and present recent analyses. These searches have covered a wide range of new physics scenarios including Supersymmetry, new resonances, additional Higgs bosons, new hidden sectors, other Dark Matter, and multi-charged particles. In addition to reviewing some of the techniques that made the analyses possible, I will summarize what we have learned from the results and briefly discuss prospe…
The accurate determination of the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) of the proton is an essential ingredient of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program. PDF uncertainties impact a wide range of processes, from Higgs boson characterisation and precision Standard Model measurements to New Physics searches. A major recent development in modern PDF analyses has been to exploit the wealth of new information contained in precision measurements from the LHC Run I, as well as progress in tools and methods to include these data in PDF fits. In this report we summarise the information that PDF-sensit…
Run 2 of the LHC offers some beautiful prospects for new physics, including flavour physics as well as more detailed studies of the Higgs boson and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). One of the possibilities for BSM physics is supersymmetry, and flavour physics plays various important rôles in constraining supersymmetric models.
The ATLAS collaboration reported a 3sigma excess in the search of events containing on-Z dilepton, jets, and large missing momentum (MET) in the 8 TeV LHC run. Motivated by this excess, many models of new physics have been proposed. Recently, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations reported new results for similar Z+MET channels in the 13 TeV run. In this paper, we comprehensively discuss the consistency between the proposed models and the LHC results of Run 1 and Run 2. We find that in models with heavy gluino production, there is generically some tension between the 8 TeV and 13 TeV results. On the…
In these lectures I survey the state of supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model in light of data from the first run of the LHC. After assessing pre-LHC expectations based on principles of naturalness and parsimony, I review the landscape of direct and indirect search limits at the LHC, including the implications of the observed Higgs mass and couplings. Finally, I survey several broad classes of supersymmetric models that are consistent with current data and enumerate the most promising search strategies and model-building directions for the future.
We present a systematic comparison of jet predictions at the LHC and the Tevatron, with accuracy up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The exact computation at NNLO is completed for the gluons-only channel, so we compare the exact predictions for this channel with an approximate prediction based on threshold resummation, in order to determine the regions where this approximation is reliable at NNLO. The kinematic regions used in this study are identical to the experimental setup used by recently published jet data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, and CDF and D0 experiments …
In minimal supergravity, the parameter space where the slepton is the LSP is usually neglected, because of strong constraints on charged dark matter. When the gravitino is the true LSP, this region avoids these constraints and offers spectacular collider signals. We investigate this scenario for the LHC and find that a large portion of the ignored mSugra parameter space can lead to discovery within the first physics run, with 1-4 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of data. We find that there are regions where discovery is feasible with only 1 day of running.
We treat the Standard Model as the low-energy limit of an effective field theory that incorporates higher-dimensional operators to capture the effects of decoupled new physics. We consider the constraints imposed on the coefficients of dimension-6 operators by electroweak precision tests (EWPTs), applying a framework for the effects of dimension-6 operators on electroweak precision tests that is more general than the standard $S,T$ formalism, and use measurements of Higgs couplings and the kinematics of associated Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC, as well as triple-gauge couplings at t…
We study the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) in the process of $pp \to W_H^+W_H^- \to W^+W^- A_H A_H$ at the 14 TeV LHC. With the $W$-jet tagging technique, we demonstrate that the bulk of the model parameter space can be probed at the level of more than $5σ$ in the signature of two fat $W$-jets plus large missing energy. Furthermore, we propose a novel strategy of measuring the principle parameter $f$ that is crucial to testify the LHT model and to fix mass spectrum, including dark matter particle. Our proposal can be easily incorporated into current experimental program of diboson s…
