We explore the opportunity to look for quark compositeness in the early stages of the LHC running by analyzing high-$E_T$ dijet production. The quark substructure that will manifest itself by affecting various kinematic distributions at the center-of-mass energy $E_{CM}$=10 TeV and in the integrated luminosity range from 0.5 to 10 fb$^{-1}$ is investigated. The estimation of the characteristic energy scale $Λ$, based on the novel, potentially powerful observable, is found to be sensitive to the sign of the interference between Standard Model and four-fermion contact interactions. We find the lower limits on $Λ$ at the LHC to be about 10.5(15.0) TeV for constructive interference and 8.5(11.5) TeV for destructive one at the integrated luminosity 0.5(10) fb$^{-1}$ and $E_{CM}=10$ TeV.
We present indications of possible substructures from weak interactions, by inspecting LEP and LHC date and inferring threshold effects due to the production of pairs of composite heavy gauge bosons W+-, Z and their hypothetical partners with different spin. Thus, we find possible evidence of scalar or pseudoscalar partners of the W+- and the Z, viz. at 53 and 57 GeV, respectively. Additionally, data may indicate excited states of the Z at 210 and 240 GeV.
It is widely believed that searching for a light Higgs boson (with a mass around 120 GeV) in the WH and ZH channels, where H decays into $b\bar{b}$, will be very challenging at the LHC. These proceedings describe how this channel can be recovered as a promising search channel at high $p_t$ by using a subjet analysis procedure.
These proceedings discuss a possible new search strategy for a light Higgs boson at the LHC, in high-pt WH and ZH production where the Higgs boson decays to a single collimated b-bbar jet. Material is included that is complementary to what was shown in the original article, arXiv:0802.2470.
We study the LHC searches for the heavy $CP$-odd Higgs boson $A$ and $CP$-even Higgs boson $H$ in the context of general two-Higgs-doublet model. Specifically, we consider the decay mode of $A/H\to t \bar t $ through the $b \bar b$ or $t \bar t $ associated production channels. In the so-called "alignment limit" of the two-Higgs-doublet model, this decay mode can be the most dominant one. By employing the HEPTopTagger and the multi-variable-analysis method, we present the search sensitivities for both $CP$-odd Higgs boson $A$ and $CP$-even Higgs boson $H$ via these channels at the high-luminos…
Jet substructure observables are crucial for exploring the effects of the hot, dense medium and differentiating between quark and gluon jets. In this paper, we investigate the modification of jet shape by calculating the differential girth at LHC energies, ranging from pp to Pb--Pb collisions. The differential girth distribution exhibits a wave-like pattern, which offers a better explanation for the radial spreading of jet energy and large-angle radiation effects. We fit the differential girth distribution with a sine wave function to obtain the amplitude, angular frequency, initial phase, and…
We study the Standard Model Higgs and vector boson associated production with large transvese momentum at the 13 TeV LHC, followed by Higgs decay to bottom quark pair. Using mass-drop tagging and filtering techiques, we obtained the cross section of signal and background. The background mainly come from $Vb\bar{b}$, $t\bar{t}$ and single top production. In order to suppress them further, we combined the mass-drop tagging and filtering analysis with $N$-subjettiness jet shape. After performing $N$-subjettiness identification, the significance can be enhanced to 3.52$σ$ with current integrated l…
We study the discovery reach of the gluino ($\widetilde{g}$) and the lightest stop squark ($\widetilde{t}_1$) with baryonic R-parity violation (UDD type) in the context of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at the 14 TeV run of the LHC. We consider the gluino pair production process followed by its decay to a top quark and a real or virtual stop squark. The top quark produced from the decay of the gluino can have sufficient transverse momentum to appear as a single fat jet. We apply the jet substructure technique to tag such a hadronically decaying boosted top quark and find that glu…
We study the heavy charged Higgs boson (from 800 GeV to 1500 GeV in this study) in production associated with a top quark at the LHC with the collision energy $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV. Such a heavy charged Higgs boson can dominantly decay into a top quark and a bottom quark due to its large Yukawa couplings, like in MSSM. To suppress background events and to confirm the signal, we reconstruct the mass bumps of the heavy charged Higgs boson and the associated top quark. For this purpose, we propose a hybrid-R reconstruction method which utilizes the top tagging technique, a jet substructure technique …
Using a pQCD picture for jet evolution in a dense QCD medium, in which medium-induced parton branchings are factorized from vacuum-like emissions, we study two jet substructure observables: the $z_g$ and the Soft Drop multiplicity distributions. We compute the respective nuclear modification factors using a Monte-Carlo implementation of the parton showers. Our results are in qualitative agreement with LHC data for Pb+Pb collisions. We identify the physical mechanisms explaining our results: incoherent jet energy loss, semi-hard medium-induced emissions and the bias introduced by the steeply fa…
Vectorlike quarks have been shown to resolve certain long-standing discrepancies pertaining to the bottom sector. We investigate, here, the prospects of identifying the existence of a topless vectorlike doublet $(B,~Y)$, as is preferred by the electroweak precision measurements. Concentrating on single production, $viz.$ $B \bar b$ with $B \to b + Z/H$ subsequently, we find that the fully hadronic decay-channel is susceptible to discovery provided jet substructure observables are used. At the 13 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$, a modest value of the chromomagnetic transi…
The Higgs boson may well be a composite scalar with a finite extension in space. Owing to the momentum dependence of its couplings the imprints of such a composite pseudo Goldstone Higgs may show up in the tails of various kinematic distributions at the LHC, distinguishing it from an elementary state. From the bottom up we construct the momentum dependent form factors to capture the interactions of the composite Higgs with the weak gauge bosons. We demonstrate their impact in the differential distributions of various kinematic parameters for the $pp\rightarrow Z^*H\rightarrow l^+l^-b\bar{b}$ c…
Charged Higgs bosons are predicted in variety of theoretically well-motivated new physics models with extended Higgs sectors. In this study, we focus on a type-II two Higgs doublet model (2HDM-II) and consider a heavy charged Higgs with its mass ranging from 500 GeV to 1 TeV as dictated by the $b\to sγ$ constraints which render $M_{H^\pm}>480$ GeV. We study the dominant production mode $H^\pm t$ associated production with $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ being the dominant decay channel when the pseudoscalar $A$ is considerably lighter. For such a heavy charged Higgs, both the decay products $W^\pm$ and $A…
It is widely considered that, for Higgs boson searches at the Large Hadron Collider, WH and ZH production where the Higgs boson decays to b anti-b are poor search channels due to large backgrounds. We show that at high transverse momenta, employing state-of-the-art jet reconstruction and decomposition techniques, these processes can be recovered as promising search channels for the standard model Higgs boson around 120 GeV in mass.
The CP-violating version of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is an example of a model where experimental data do not preclude the presence of light Higgs bosons in the range around 10 -- 110 GeV. Such light Higgs bosons, decaying almost wholly to b-bbar pairs, may be copiously produced at the LHC, but would remain inaccessible to conventional Higgs searches because of intractable QCD backgrounds. We demonstrate that a significant number of these light Higgs bosons would be boosted strongly enough for the pair of daughter $b$-jet pairs to appear as a single `fat' jet with substr…
The LHC searches for the CP-odd Higgs boson is studied (with masses from 300 GeV to 1 TeV) in the context of the general two-Higgs-doublet model. With the discovery of the 125 GeV Higgs boson at the LHC, we highlight one promising discovery channel of the hZ. This channel can become significant after the global signal fitting to the 125 GeV Higgs boson in the general two-Higgs-doublet model. It is particularly important in the scenario where two CP-even Higgs bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet model have the common mass of 125 GeV. Since the final states involve a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson,…
Study of polarization of heavy particles is an important branch of research in today's collider studies. The massive $W$ boson has two types of polarization states, which usually are studied via the angular distribution of its decay products. We have studied polarization of hadronic and boosted $W$ boson using jet substructure technique at 14 TeV LHC. Two different methods, viz. N-subjettiness and Soft Drop, were used to find the subjets, which are approximately considered to be the two hadronic decay products of $W$, inside boosted $W$ jets. These subjets were then used to find the distributi…
Predictions for the pseudorapidity density of charged particles produced in Pb-Pb central collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.5$ TeV are presented. Particle production in such collisions is computed in the framework of k_t-factorization, using running coupling non-linear evolution to determine the transverse momentum and rapidity dependence of the nuclear unintegrated gluon distributions.
Collider signals of dark photons are an exciting probe for new gauge forces and are characterized by events with boosted lepton jets. Existing techniques are efficient in searching for muonic lepton jets but due to substantial backgrounds have difficulty constraining lepton jets containing only electrons. This is unfortunate since upcoming intensity frontier experiments are sensitive to dark photon masses which only allow electron decays. Analyzing a recently proposed model of kinetic mixing, with new scalar particles decaying into dark photons, we find that existing techniques for electron je…
We present predictions for the pseudo-rapidity density of charged particles produced in central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. Particle production in such collisions is calculated in the framework of k_t-factorization. The nuclear unintegrated gluon distributions at LHC energies are determined from numerical solutions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation including recently calculated running coupling corrections. The initial conditions for the evolution are fixed by fitting RHIC data at collision energies \sqrt{s}}=130 and 200 GeV per nucleon. We obtain dN^{Pb-Pb}_{ch}/dη(\sqrt{s}=5.5 TeV, η=0)\ap…
We study high-pt jets from QCD and from highly-boosted massive particles such as tops, W, Z and Higgs, and argue that infrared-safe observables can help reduce QCD backgrounds. Jets from QCD are characterized by different patterns of energy flow compared to the products of highly-boosted heavy particle decays, and we employ a variety of jet shapes, observables restricted to energy flow within a jet, to explore this difference. Results from Monte Carlo generators and arguments based on perturbation theory support the discriminating power of the shapes we refer to as planar flow and angularities…
The two-Higgs-doublet model contains extra Higgs bosons, with mass ranges spanning from several hundred GeV to about 1 TeV. We study the possible experimental searches for the neutral Higgs bosons of $A$ and $H$ at the future high-luminosity LHC runs. Besides of the conventional search modes that are inspired by the supersymmetric models, we discuss two search modes which were not quite addressed previously. They are the decay modes of $A\to hZ$ and $A/H \to t \bar t$. Thanks to the technique of tagging boosted objects of SM-like Higgs bosons and top quarks, we show the improved mass reaches f…
This report of the BOOST2012 workshop presents the results of four working groups that studied key aspects of jet substructure. We discuss the potential of the description of jet substructure in first-principle QCD calculations and study the accuracy of state-of-the-art Monte Carlo tools. Experimental limitations of the ability to resolve substructure are evaluated, with a focus on the impact of additional proton proton collisions on jet substructure performance in future LHC operating scenarios. A final section summarizes the lessons learnt during the deployment of substructure analyses in se…
The existence of tiny neutrino masses and flavor mixings can be explained naturally in various seesaw models, many of which typically having additional Majorana type SM gauge singlet right handed neutrinos ($N$). If they are at around the electroweak scale and furnished with sizeable mixings with light active neutrinos, they can be produced at high energy colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A characteristic signature would be same sign lepton pairs, violating lepton number, together with light jets -- $pp\to N\ell^{\pm}, \; N\to\ell^{\pm}W^{\mp}, \; W^{\mp}\to jj$. We propose a…
In this report we review recent theoretical progress and the latest experimental results in jet substructure from the Tevatron and the LHC. We review the status of and outlook for calculation and simulation tools for studying jet substructure. Following up on the report of the Boost 2010 workshop, we present a new set of benchmark comparisons of substructure techniques, focusing on the set of variables and grooming methods that are collectively known as "top taggers". To facilitate further exploration, we have attempted to collect, harmonise, and publish software implementations of these techn…
Top-partners -- vector-like quarks which mix predominantly with the top quark -- are simple extensions of the standard model present in many theories of new physics such as little Higgs models, topcolor models, and extra dimensions. Through renormalizable mixing with the top quark, these top-partners inherit couplings to the Higgs boson. Higgs bosons produced from the decay of top-partners are often highly boosted and ideal candidates for analyses based on jet substructure. Using substructure methods, we show that light Higgs bosons decaying to b b-bar can be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC with …
Jets with transverse energy of few TeV are becoming now common in LHC data. Most of these jets are produced by QCD processes and some from the collimated decay of highly boosted objects like W, Z, H0 and top-quark. The study of such QCD jets may shed light on QCD showering processes and the identification of the jets coming from decays may test the Standard Model under extreme conditions and may also provide the first hints for Physics Beyond the Standard Model. A short review of jet algorithms, Correction procedures for pile-up effects and commonly used substructure observables are described.
Simple extensions of the Standard Model (SM) with additional Right Handed Neutrinos (RHNs) can elegantly explain the existence of small neutrino masses and their flavor mixings. Collider searches for sterile neutrinos are being actively pursued currently. Heavy RHNs may dominantly decay into $W^\pm l^\pm$ after being produced at the LHC. In this paper, we consider collider signatures of heavy pseudo-Dirac neutrinos in the context of inverse seesaw scenario, with a sizable mixing with the SM neutrinos under two different flavor structures, viz., Flavor Diagonal (FD) and Flavor Non-Diagonal (FND…
Jet substructure is playing a central role at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) probing the Standard Model in extreme regions of phase space and providing innovative ways to search for new physics. Analytic calculations of experimentally successful observables are a primary catalyst driving developments in jet substructure, allowing for a deeper understanding of observables and for the exploitation of increasingly subtle features of jets. In this paper we present a field theoretic framework enabling systematically improvable calculations of groomed multi-prong substructure observables, which bui…
Higgs signatures from the cascade decays of light stops are an interesting possibility in the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). We investigate the potential reach of the light stop mass at the 13 TeV run of the LHC by means of five NMSSM benchmark points where this signature is dominant. These benchmark points are compatible with current Higgs coupling measurements, LHC constraints, dark matter relic density and direct detection constraints. We consider single and di-lepton search strategies, as well as the jet-substructure technique to reconstruct the Higgs bosons. We fin…
We examine the robustness of collider phenomenology predictions for a dark sector scenario with QCD-like properties. Pair production of dark quarks at the LHC can result in a wide variety of signatures, depending on the details of the new physics model. A particularly challenging signal results when prompt production induces a parton shower that yields a high multiplicity of collimated dark hadrons with subsequent decays to Standard Model hadrons. The final states contain jets whose substructure encodes their non-QCD origin. This is a relatively subtle signature of strongly coupled beyond the …
A summary is given of the current status of the next-to-leading order (NLO) parton-level integrator MCFM. Some details are given about the Higgs + 2-jet process and the production and decay of $t \bar{t}$, both of which have recently been added to the code. Using MCFM, comparisons between the Tevatron running at $\sqrt{s}=2$~TeV and the LHC running at $\sqrt{s}=7$~TeV are made for standard model process including the production of Higgs bosons. The case for running the Tevatron until 16fb$^{-1}$ are accumulated by both detectors is sketched.
For the "stealth bosons" $S$, light boosted particles with a decay $S \to A A \to q \bar q q \bar q$ into four quarks and reconstructed as a single fat jet, the groomed jet mass has a strong correlation with groomed jet substructure variables. Consequently, the jet mass distribution is strongly affected by the jet substructure selection cuts when applied on the groomed jet. We illustrate this fact by recasting a CMS search for low-mass dijet resonances and show a few representative examples. The mass distributions exhibit narrow and wide bumps at several locations in the 100 - 300 GeV range, b…
The CUJET Monte Carlo Jet Energy loss model is applied to predict the jet flavor, centrality and density dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ at RHIC and LHC. Running coupling effects due to combined $x$, $k_\perp$ and $q_\perp$ evolution are included for the first time in the dynamical DGLV opacity expansion framework and are shown to provide a natural dynamical QCD tomographic solution to the surprising transparency of the quark gluon plasma produced at LHC as suggested by $p_\perp>10$ GeV $R_{AA}$ data from ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS.
We study how the recent ATLAS and CMS Higgs mass bounds affect the renormalization group running of the physical parameters in universal extra dimensions. Using the running of the Higgs self-coupling constant, we derive bounds on the cutoff scale of the extra-dimensional theory itself. We show that the running of physical parameters, such as the fermion masses and the CKM mixing matrix, is significantly restricted by these bounds. In particular, we find that the running of the gauge couplings cannot be sufficient to allow gauge unification at the cutoff scale.
Jet substructure has emerged to play a central role at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where it has provided numerous innovative new ways to search for new physics and to probe the Standard Model in extreme regions of phase space. In this article we provide a comprehensive review of state of the art theoretical and machine learning developments in jet substructure. This article is meant both as a pedagogical introduction, covering the key physical principles underlying the calculation of jet substructure observables, the development of new observables, and cutting edge machine learning techni…
We explore the impact of Renormalisation Group (RG) effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) interpretations of LHC measurements. We implement the RG running and mixing for the Wilson coefficients as obtained from the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the SMEFT into a Monte Carlo generator. This allows to consistently predict and combine in global fits collider observables characterised by different scales. As a showcase, we examine the impact of RG running in the strong coupling on the SMEFT predictions for $t \bar t$ production cross sections and differential distrib…
At the LHC, a generic supersymmetric cascade can be a source of top quark. Specifically third generation squarks and gluino are the major sources of top quark which could also be boosted. In this article, we have shown that jet substructure algorithm can be very useful in identifying such boosted top quarks in the cascade. We take inclusive three jets plus zero lepton plus missing energy final state and try to reconstruct at least one hadronically decaying top quark by using top tagging techniques which has good prospect at the LHC.
Resonance searches generally focus on narrow states that would produce a sharp peak rising over background. Early LHC running will, however, be sensitive primarily to broad resonances. In this paper we demonstrate that statistical methods should suffice to find broad resonances and distinguish them from both background and contact interactions over a large range of previously unexplored parameter space. We furthermore introduce an angular measure we call ellipticity, which measures how forward (or backward) the muon is in eta, and allows for discrimination between models with different parity …
The inclusion of running coupling effects in the BK-JIMWLK evolution equations considerably reduces the energy dependence of the saturation scale with respect to previous estimates based on fits to HERA data. We discuss how such slowdown affects the expectations for particle multiplicities in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. Our prediction is based on the use of k_t-factorization and on the use of unintegrated gluon distributions taken from the numerical solutions of the BK equation with running coupling. We obtain a central value dN/dη(sqrt{s}=5.5 TeV)(η=0)~1390.
We investigate the quarkonium production mechanisms in jets at the LHC, using the Fragmenting Jet Functions (FJF) approach. Specifically, we discuss the jet energy dependence of the $J/ψ$ production cross section at the LHC. By comparing the cross sections for the different NRQCD production channels ($^1S_0^{[8]}$,$^3S_1^{[8]}$,$^3P_J^{[8]}$, and $^3S_1^{[1]}$), we find that at fixed values of energy fraction $z$ carried by the $J/ψ$, if the normalized cross section is a decreasing function of the jet energy, in particular for $z > 0.5$, then the depolarizing $^1S_0^{[8]}$ must be the dominant…
We predict that the RpA ratio at the most forward rapidities to be measured at LHC should be strongly suppressed, close to "total shadowing'' (RpA = A^(-1/3)), as a consequence of running coupling effects in the nonlinear QCD evolution.
Higgsino in supersymmetric standard models can play the role of dark matter particle. In conjunction with the naturalness criterion, the higgsino mass parameter is expected to be around the electroweak scale. In this work, we explore the potential of probing the nearly degenerate light higgsinos with machine learning at the LHC. By analyzing jet images and other jet substructure information, we use the Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) to enhance the signal significance. We find that our deep learning jet image method can improve the previous result based on the conventional cut-flow by about …
In this work we estimate the heavy quark production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at LHC energies using the color dipole formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Nuclear effects are considered in the computation of the total cross sections and rapidity distributions for scattering on protons and nuclei.
Strongly coupled models at the TeV scale often predict one or more neutral spin-one resonances (Z') which have appreciable branching fractions to electroweak bosons, namely the Higgs and longitudinal W and Z. These resonances are usually believed to have multi-TeV mass due to electroweak precision constraints, placing them on the edge of LHC discovery reach. Searching for them is made particularly challenging because hadronically decaying electroweak bosons produced at such high energy will appear very similar to QCD jets. In this work we revisit the possibility of discovering these resonances…
The tails of diboson production at the LHC are sensitive to the interference between Standard Model and higher dimension operators parameterizing the effects of heavy new physics. However, helicity selection rules for the diboson scattering amplitudes set an obstruction to the naïve interference contributions of dimension six operators, causing the total diboson rate correction's leading contribution to cancel. In this case, carefully measuring the azimuthal decay angles "resurrects" the interference, recouping sensitivity to the "non-interfering" operators. We explore these signatures in deta…
We present a systematic study of the normalized symmetric cumulants, NSC(n,m), at the eccentricity level in proton-proton interactions at $\sqrt s\!=\! 13$ TeV within a wounded hot spot approach. We focus our attention on the influence of spatial correlations between the proton constituents, in our case gluonic hot spots, on this observable. We notice that the presence of short-range repulsive correlations between the hot spots systematically decreases the values of NSC(2,3) and NSC(2,4) in mid-to-ultra central collisions while increases them in peripheral interactions. In the case of NSC(2,3)…
We perform an analysis of jet quenching in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies with the temperature dependent running QCD coupling. Our results show that the $T$-dependent QCD coupling largely eliminates the difference between the optimal values of $α_s$ for the RHIC and LHC energies. It may be viewed as direct evidence of the increase of the thermal suppression of $α_s$ with rising temperature.
We explore the challenging but phenomenologically interesting hierarchical mass spectrum of the Inert Doublet Model where relatively light dark matter along with much heavier scalar states can fully satisfy the constraints on the relic abundance and also fulfill other theoretical as well as collider and astrophysical bounds. To probe this region of parameter space at the LHC, we propose a signal process that combines up to two large radius boosted jets along with substantial missing transverse momentum. Aided by our intuitive signal selection, we capture a hybrid process where the di-fatjet si…
The potential of the LHeC, a future electron-proton collider, for precision Deep Inelastic Scattering measurements is reviewed with particular emphasis on the reduction of uncertainties on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. The interpretation of possible Beyond Standard Model (BSM) signals at the LHC is crucially dependent on precise knowledge of the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) and the uncertainties on PDFs are a limiting factor. The LHeC project, running in parallel with later stages of LHC running, would provide much improved precision on the PDFs as compared …
We examine the flavor dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ in the pQCD calculations at LHC energies. The computations are performed accounting for radiative and collisional parton energy loss with running coupling constant. Our results show that the recent LHC data on the $R_{AA}$ for charged hadrons, D-mesons and non-photonic electrons agree reasonably with the pQCD picture of the parton energy loss with the dominating contribution from the radiative mechanism.
