We show that integral representation of universal volume function of compact simple Lie groups gives rise to six analytic functions on $CP^2$, which transform as two triplets under group of permutations of Vogel's projective parameters. This substitutes expected invariance under permutations of universal parameters by more complicated covariance. We provide an analytical continuation of these functions and particularly calculate their change under permutations of parameters. This last relation is universal generalization, for an arbitrary simple Lie group and an arbitrary point in Vogel's plane, of the Kinkelin's reflection relation on Barnes' $G(1+N)$ function. Kinkelin's relation gives asymmetry of the $G(1+N)$ function (which is essentially the volume function for $SU(N)$ groups) under $N\leftrightarrow -N$ transformation (which is equivalent of the permutation of parameters, for $SU(N)$ groups), and coincides with universal relation on permutations at the $SU(N)$ line on Vogel's plane. These results are also applicable to universal partition function of Chern-Simons theory on three-dimensional sphere. This effect is analogous to modular covariance, instead of invariance, of partition functions of appropriate gauge theories under modular transformation of couplings.
The present thesis represents developments in two main directions related to the simple Lie algebras. The first one is devoted to the representation theory of the simple Lie algebras. Specifically, we present recent results, which include new universal formulae in Vogel's universal description, as well as the discovery of additional properties of those formulae. In the second part of the thesis, we demonstrate applications of Vogel's description to the study of a physical theory. Namely, we explicitly formulate the { \it refined} Chern-Simons theories on $S^3$ for each of the simple gauge grou…
In his study of finite (Vassiliev's) knot invariants,Vogel introduced the so-called universal parameters, belonging to the projective plane, which particularly parameterize the simple Lie algebras by the Vogel's table. Subsequently a number of quantities, such as some universal knot invariants, (quantum) dimensions of simple Lie algebras, etc., have been represented in terms of these parameters, i.e. in the universal form. We prove that at the points from the Vogel's table all known universal quantum dimension formulae are linearly resolvable, i.e. yield finite answers even if these points are…
We present the universal, in Vogel's sense, expression for the quantum dimension of Cartan product of an arbitrary number of adjoint and $X_2$ representations of simple Lie algebras. The same formula mysteriously gives quantum dimensions of some other representations of the same Lie algebra under permutations of universal parameters. We list these representations for exceptional algebras and stable versions for classical algebras, when the rank of the classical algebra is sufficiently large w.r.t. the powers of representations. We show that universal formulae can have singularities on Vogel's …
We study the relation between the partition function of refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons on the 3-sphere and the universal Chern-Simons partition function in the sense of Mkrtchyan and Veselov. We find a four-parameter generalization of the integral representation of universal Chern-Simons that includes refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons for special values of parameters. The large N expansion of the integral representation of refined SU(N) Chern-Simons explicitly shows the replacement of the virtual Euler characteristic of the moduli space of complex curves with a refined Euler charact…
We construct characteristic identities for the split (polarized) Casimir operators of the simple Lie algebras in defining (minimal fundamental) and adjoint representations. By means of these characteristic identities, for all simple Lie algebras we derive explicit formulae for invariant projectors onto irreducible subrepresentations in T^{\otimes 2} in two cases, when T is the defining and the adjoint representation. In the case when T is the defining representation, these projectors and the split Casimir operator are used to explicitly write down invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equatio…
We present a universal knot polynomials for 2- and 3-strand torus knots in adjoint representation, by universalization of appropriate Rosso-Jones formula. According to universality, these polynomials coincide with adjoined colored HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials at SL and SO/Sp lines on Vogel's plane, and give their exceptional group's counterparts on exceptional line. We demonstrate that [m,n]=[n,m] topological invariance, when applicable, take place on the entire Vogel's plane. We also suggest the universal form of invariant of figure eight knot in adjoint representation, and suggest existen…
The problem of uniqueness of universal formulae for (quantum) dimensions of simple Lie algebras is investigated. We present generic functions, which multiplied by a universal (quantum) dimension formula, preserve both its structure and its values at the points from Vogel's table. Connection of some of these functions with geometrical configurations, such as the famous Pappus-Brianchon-Pascal $(9_3)_1$ configuration of points and lines, is established. Particularly, the appropriate realizable configuration $(144_336_{12})$ (yet to be found) will provide a symmetric non-uniqueness factor for any…
Closed simple integral representation through Vogel's universal parameters is found both for perturbative and nonperturbative (which is inverse invariant group volume) parts of free energy of Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$. This proves the universality of that partition function. For classical groups it manifestly satisfy N \rightarrow -N duality, in apparent contradiction with previously used ones. For SU(N) we show that asymptotic of nonperturbative part of our partition function coincides with that of Barnes G-function, recover Chern-Simons/topological string duality in genus expansion and re…
We present the partition function of Chern-Simons theory with the exceptional gauge group on three-sphere in the form of a partition function of the refined closed topological string with relation $2τ=g_s(1-b) $ between single Kähler parameter $τ$, string coupling constant $g_s$ and refinement parameter $b$, where $b=\frac{5}{3},\frac{5}{2},3,4,6$ for $G_2, F_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$, respectively. The non-zero BPS invariants $N^d_{J_L,J_R}$ ($d$ - degree) are $N^2_{0,\frac{1}{2}}=1, N^{11}_{0,1}=1$. Besides these terms, partition function of Chern-Simons theory contains term corresponding to the ref…
We demonstrate the existence of a universal transition from a continuous scale invariant phase to a discrete scale invariant phase for a class of one-dimensional quantum systems with anisotropic scaling symmetry between space and time. These systems describe a Lifshitz scalar interacting with a background potential. The transition occurs at a critical coupling $λ_{c}$ corresponding to a strongly attractive potential.
The universal behavior of Hawking radiation is originated in the conformal symmetries of matter fields near the black hole horizon. We explain the origin of this universality based on (1) the gravitational anomaly and its higher-spin generalizations and (2) conformal transformation properties of fluxes.
The one-loop structure of the trace anomaly is investigated using different regularizations and renormalization schemes: dimensional, proper time and Pauli-Villars. The universality of this anomaly is analyzed from a very general perspective. The Euler and Weyl terms of the anomalous trace of the stress tensor are absolutely universal. The pure derivative $ \square R$-term is shown to be universal only if the regularization breaks conformal symmetry softly. If the breaking of conformal symmetry by the regularization method is hard the coefficient of this term might become arbitrary which point…
We calculate the holographic conformal anomaly and brane Newton potential when bulk is 5d AdS BH. It is shown that such anomaly is the same as in the case of pure AdS or (asymptotically) dS bulk spaces, i.e. it is (bulk) metric independent one. While Newton potential on the static brane in AdS BH is different from the one in pure AdS space, the gravity trapping still occurs for two branes system. This indicates to metric independence of gravity localization.
We study discrete R-symmetries, which appear in 4D low energy effective field theory derived from hetetoric orbifold models. We derive the R-symmetries directly from geometrical symmetries of orbifolds. In particular, we obtain the corresponding R-charges by requiring that the couplings be invariant under these symmetries. This allows for a more general treatment than the explicit computations of correlation functions made previously by the authors, including models with discrete Wilson lines, and orbifold symmetries beyond plane-by-plane rotational invariance. Surprisingly, for the cases cove…
In this Letter, we show that the classical SO(2,1) symmetry of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas in two dimensions is broken by quantum effects. The anomalous correction to the symmetry algebra is given by a two-body operator that is well known as the contact. Taking into account this modification, we are able to derive the virial theorem for the system and a universal relation for the pressure of a homogeneous gas. The existence of an undamped breathing mode is associated with the classical symmetry. We provide an estimate for the anomalous frequency shift of this oscillation at zero temperatu…
Employing a conformal map to hyperbolic space cross a circle, we compute the universal contribution to the vacuum entanglement entropy (EE) across a sphere in even-dimensional conformal field theory. Previous attempts to derive the EE in this way were hindered by a lack of knowledge of the appropriate boundary terms in the trace anomaly. In this paper we show that the universal part of the EE can be treated as a purely boundary effect. As a byproduct of our computation, we derive an explicit form for the A-type anomaly contribution to the Wess-Zumino term for the trace anomaly, now including b…
We study the instanton partition functions of two well-known superconformal field theories with mass deformations. Two types of anomaly equations, namely, the modular anomaly and holomorphic anomaly, have been discovered in the literature. We provide a clean solution to the long standing puzzle about their precise relation, and obtain some universal formulas. We show that the partition function is invariant under the SL(2,Z) duality which exchanges theories at strong coupling with those of weak coupling.
We reveal elegant relations between the shape dependence of the Casimir effects and Weyl anomaly in boundary conformal field theories (BCFT). We show that for any BCFT which has a description in terms of an effective action, the near boundary divergent behavior of the renormalized stress tensor is completely determined by the central charges of the theory. These relations are verified by free BCFTs. We test them with holographic models of BCFT and find exact agreement. We propose that these relations between Casimir coefficients and central charges hold for any BCFT. With the holographic model…
We show that generic U(1) superfluids with a U(1)^3 anomaly feature universal anomalous transport at low temperature. This universal behavior had been encountered before for a class holographic models by performing explicit computations: anomalous conductivities were found to either vanish or to be 1/3 of the value they present for ordinary fluids. In this note we argue in favor of the fact that at zero temperature chiral conductivities are fully determined by anomaly coefficients. We also compute them and show explicitly where their particular value arises from. The proof is based on Ward Ide…
In addition to the existing strong indications for lepton flavour university violation (LFUV) in low energy precision experiments, CMS recently released an analysis of non-resonant di-lepton pairs which could constitute the first sign of LFUV in high-energy LHC searches. In this article we show that the Cabibbo angle anomaly, an (apparent) violation of first row and column CKM unitarity with $\approx3\,σ$ significance, and the CMS result can be correlated and commonly explained in a model independent way by the operator $[Q_{\ell q}^{(3)}]_{1111} = (\bar{\ell}_1γ^μσ^I\ell_1)(\bar{q}_1γ_μσ^Iq_1…
We discuss the possibility of a gravitional Nieh-Yan anomaly of the type $\partial_μj^μ_5 =γT^2{\cal T}^a\wedge {\cal T}_a$ in topological Weyl materials, where $T$ is temperature and ${\cal T}^a$ is the effective or emergent torsion. As distinct from the non-universal parameter $Λ$ in the conventional (zero temperature) Nieh-Yan anomaly -- with canonical dimensions of momentum -- the parameter $γ$ is dimensionless. This suggests that the dimensionless parameter is fundamental, being determined by the geometry, topology and number of the number of chiral quantum fields without any explicit non…
We study low-energy dynamics of $[SU(N)]^K$ chiral quiver gauge theories in connection with $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, and quantum chromodynamics with bi-fundamental fermions (QCD(BF)). These theories can be obtained by $\mathbb{Z}_K$ orbifold projections of $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(NK)$ SYM theory, but the perturbative planar equivalence does not extend nonperturbatively for $K\ge 3$. In order to study low-energy behaviors, we analyze these systems using 't~Hooft anomaly matching and reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. Thanks to 't~Hooft anomaly that involves $1$…
This paper deals with magnetic equations of the type dH=J where the current J is a delta-function on a brane worldvolume and H a p-form field strength. In many situations in M-theory this equation needs to be solved for H in terms of a potential. A standard universality class of solutions, involving Dirac-branes, gives rise to strong intermediate singularities in H which in many physically relevant cases lead to inconsistencies. In this paper we present an alternative universality class of solutions for magnetic equations in terms of Chern-kernels, and provide relevant applications, among whic…
A regularization-independent universal formula for the energy--momentum tensor in gauge theory in the flat spacetime can be written down by employing the so-called Yang--Mills gradient flow. We examine a possible use of the formula in the calculation of the axial $U(1)$ anomaly in a gravitational field, the anomaly first obtained by Toshiei Kimura [Prog.\ Theor.\ Phys.\ {\bf 42}, 1191 (1969)]. As a general argument indicates, the formula reproduces the correct non-local structure of the (axial $U(1)$ current)--(energy--momentum tensor)--(energy--momentum tensor) triangle diagram in a way that …
Quantum anomalies, determined by the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, place strong constraints on the space of quantum gravity theories in six dimensions with minimal supersymmetry. The conjecture of "string universality" states that all such theories which do not have anomalies or other quantum inconsistencies are realized in string theory. This paper describes this conjecture and recent work by Kumar, Morrison, and the author towards developing a global picture of the space of consistent 6D supergravities and their realization in string theory via F-theory constructions. We focus on the discrete…
In this paper, we investigate Casimir effect, Weyl anomaly and displacement operator for boundary conformal field theory in general dimensions. We find universal relations between them. In particular, they are all determined by the central charge of boundary conformal field theory. We verify these relations by studying free BCFTs and holographic BCFTs. As a byproduct, we obtain the holographic two point function of stress tensor when the bulk boundary is perpendicular to the AdS boundary.
We investigate the nature of the finite-temperature chiral transition in QCD with two light flavors, in the case of an effective suppression of the the U(1)_A symmetry breaking induced by the axial anomaly, which implies the symmetry breaking U(2)_L X U(2)_R -> U(2)_V, instead of SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_V. For this purpose, we perform a high-order field-theoretical perturbative study of the renormalization-group (RG) flow of the corresponding three-dimensional multiparameter Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Phi4 theory with the same symmetry-breaking pattern. We confirm the existence of a stable fixe…
Using the techniques developed in arxiv: 1203.3544 we compute the universal part of the equilibrium partition function characteristic of a theory with multiple abelian U(1) anomalies in arbitrary even spacetime dimensions. This contribution is closely linked to the universal anomaly induced transport coefficients in hydrodynamics which have been studied before using entropy techniques. Equilibrium partition function provides an alternate and a microscopically more transparent way to derive the constraints on these transport coefficients. We re-derive this way all the known results on these tra…
Blowup equations and holomorphic anomaly equations are two universal yet completely different approaches to solve refined topological string theory on local Calabi-Yau threefolds corresponding to A- and B-model respectively. The former originated from comparing Nekrasov partition functions of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on $Ω$ defomed spacetime $\mathbb{C}^2_{ε_1,ε_2}$ and its one-point blown-up, while the latter takes root in the degeneration of wordsheet Riemann surfaces. The relation between the two approaches is an open question. In this short note, we find a novel recursive equation…
We derive a universal relation for the transverse part of triangle anomalies within a class of theories whose gravity dual is described by the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory. This relation provides a set of sum rules involving the masses, decay constants and couplings between resonances, and leads to the formulas for the matrix elements of the vector and axial currents in the presence of the soft electromagnetic field. We also discuss that this relation is valid in real QCD at least approximately. This may be regarded as the anomaly matching for resonances as an analogue of that for the massle…
We study an 't Hooft anomaly of massless QCD at finite temperature. With the imaginary baryon chemical potential at the Roberge-Weiss point, there is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry which can be used to define confinement. We show the existence of a mixed anomaly between the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and the chiral symmetry, which gives a strong relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The anomaly is a parity anomaly in the QCD Lagrangian reduced to three dimensions. It is reproduced in the chiral Lagrangian by a topological term related to Skyrmion charge, matching the anomaly befor…
