In \cite{HPP}, Hrushovski and the authors proved, in a certain finite rank environment, that rigidity of definable Galois groups implies that $T$ has the canonical base property in a strong form, " internality to" being replaced by "algebraicity in". In the current paper we give a reasonably robust definition of the "strong canonical base property" in a rather more general finite rank context than \cite{HPP}, and prove its {\em equivalence} with rigidity of the relevant definable Galois groups. The new direction is an elaboration on the old result that $1$-based groups are rigid.
We make explicit certain results around the Galois correspondence in the context of definable automorphism groups, and point out the relation to some recent papers dealing with the Galois theory of algebraic differential equations when the constants are not "closed" in suitable senses. We also improve the definitions and results on generalized strongly normal extensions.
We discuss definability in the language of rings without parameters of the unique canonical henselian valuation of a field. We show that in most cases where the canonical henselian valuation is definable, it is already definable by a universal-existential or an existential-universal formula.
This is a largely expository paper about how groups arise or are of interest in model theory. Included are the following topics: classifying groups definable in specific structures or theories and the relation to algebraic groups, groups definable in stable, simple and NIP theories, definable compactifications of groups, definable Galois theory (including differential Galois theory), connections with topological dynamics, model theory of the free group.
We present the (Lascar) Galois group of any countable theory as a quotient of a compact Polish group by an $F_σ$ normal subgroup: in general, as a topological group, and under NIP, also in terms of Borel cardinality. This allows us to obtain similar results for arbitrary strong types defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$. As an easy conclusion of our main theorem, we get the main result from our recent paper joint with Andand Pillay, which says that for any strong type defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$, smoothness is equivalent to type-definability. We also explai…
We first elaborate on the theory of relative internality in stable theories, focusing on the notion of uniform relative internality (called collapse of the groupoid in an earlier work of the second author), and relating it to orthogonality, triviality of fibrations, the strong canonical base property, differential Galois theory, and GAGA. We prove that $\mathrm{DCF}_0$ does not have the strong canonical base property, correcting an earlier proof. We also prove that the theory $\mathrm{CCM}$ of compact complex manifolds does not have the strong CBP, and initiate a study of the definable Galois …
We construct measures on definable sets in $e$-free perfect PAC fields, as well as on perfect PAC fields whose absolute Galois groups are free pro-$p$ of finite rank. We deduce the definable amenability of all groups definable in such fields. As a corollary, we additionally prove the definable amenability of all groups definable in perfect $ω$-free PAC fields via ultralimit measures.
A fundamental result from Boolean modal logic states that a first-order definable class of Kripke frames defines a logic that is validated by all of its canonical frames. We generalise this to the level of non-distributive logics that have a relational semantics provided by structures based on polarities. Such structures have associated complete lattices of stable subsets, and these have been used to construct canonical extensions of lattice-based algebras. We study classes of structures that are closed under ultraproducts and whose stable set lattices have additional operators that are first-…
We revisit Kolchin's results on definability of differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. In certain classes of differential topological fields, which encompasses ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imaginaries in CODF, we establish a relative Galois correspondence for relatively definable subgroups of the group of differential order automorp…
Let $\mathcal M$ be a weakly o-minimal non-valuational structure, and $\mathcal N$ its canonical o-minimal extension (by Wencel). We prove that every group $G$ definable in $\mathcal M$ is a subgroup of a group $K$ definable in $\mathcal N$, which is canonical in the sense that it is the smallest such group. As an application, we obtain that $G^{00}= G\cap K^{00}$, and establish Pillay's Conjecture in this setting: $G/G^{00}$, equipped with the logic topology, is a compact Lie group, and if $G$ has finitely satisfiable generics, then $\dim_{Lie}(G/G^{00})= \dim(G)$.
Denef and Loeser defined a map from the Grothendieck ring of sets definable in pseudo-finite fields to the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives, thus enabling to apply any cohomological invariant to these sets. We generalize this to perfect, pseudo algebraically closed fields with pro-cyclic Galois group. In addition, we define some maps between different Grothendieck rings of definable sets which provide additional information, not contained in the associated motive. In particular we infer that the map of Denef-Loeser is not injective.
We give a detailed proof of Kolchin's results on differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. We closely follow former works due to Pillay and his co-authors which were written under the assumption that the field of constant is algebraically closed. In the present setting, which encompasses the cases of ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imagin…
We continue our earlier investigation of dp-finite fields. We show that the "heavy sets" of [6] are exactly the sets of full dp-rank. As a consequence, full dp-rank is a definable property in definable families of sets. If $I$ is the group of infinitesimals, we show that $1 + I$ is the group of multiplicative infinitesimals. From this, we deduce that the canonical topology is a field topology. Lastly, we consider the (unlikely) conjecture that the canonical topology is a V-topology. Assuming this conjecture, we deduce the classification of dp-finite fields conjectured by Halevi, Hasson, and Ja…
We study strong types and Galois groups in model theory from a topological and descriptive-set-theoretical point of view, leaning heavily on topological dynamical tools. More precisely, we give an abstract (not model theoretic) treatment of problems related to cardinality and Borel cardinality of strong types, quotients of definable groups and related objecets, generalising (and often improving) essentially all hitherto known results in this area. In particular, we show that under reasonable assumptions, strong type spaces are "locally" quotients of compact Polish groups. It follows that they …
We prove several theorems relating amenability of groups in various categories (discrete, definable, topological, automorphism group) to model-theoretic invariants (quotients by connected components, Lascar Galois group, G-compactness, ...). For example, if $M$ is a countable, $ω$-categorical structure and $Aut(M)$ is amenable, as a topological group, then the Lascar Galois group $Gal_{L}(T)$ of the theory $T$ of $M$ is compact, Hausdorff (also over any finite set of parameters), that is $T$ is G-compact. An essentially special case is that if $Aut(M)$ is extremely amenable, then $Gal_{L}(T)$ …
Given a definably compact group G in a saturated o-minimal structure, there is a canonical homomorphism from G to a compact real Lie group F(G). We establish a similar result for the (o-mininimal) universal cover of a definably compact group. We also show that F(G) determines the definable homotopy type of G. A crucial step is to show that the fundamental group of an open subset of F(G) is isomorphic to the definable fundamental group of its preimage in G. Our results depend on the study of the o-minimal fundamental groupoid of G.
We show that an infinite group is definable in any non trivial geometric $C$-minimal structure which is definably maximal and does not have any definable bijection between a bounded interval and an unbounded one in its canonical tree. No kind of linearity is assumed.
We investigate fields of characteristic 0 and dp-rank 2. While we do not obtain a classification, we prove that any unstable field of characteristic 0 and dp-rank 2 admits a unique definable V-topology. If this statement could be generalized to higher ranks, we would obtain the expected classification of fields of finite dp-rank. We obtain the unique definable V-topology by investigating the "canonical topology" defined in earlier work. Contrary to earlier expectations, the canonical topology need not be a V-topology. However, we are able to characterize the canonical topology (on fields of dp…
We make further observations on the features of Galois cohomology in the general model theoretic context. We make explicit the connection between forms of definable groups and first cohomology sets with coefficients in a suitable automorphism group. We then use a method of twisting cohomology (inspired on Serre's algebraic twisting) to describe arbitrary fibres in cohomology sequences -- yielding a useful finiteness result on cohomology sets. Applied to the special case of differential fields and Kolchin's constrained cohomology, we prove that the first constrained cohomology set of a differen…
We give an example of a finite rank, in fact aleph-1 categorical theory where the CBP (canonical base property) does not hold. We include a "group-like" example. We also prove, in a finite Morley rank context, if all definable Galois groups are "rigid" then the theory has the CBP (in a strong sense).
Let $M$ be a $C$-minimal structure and $T$ its canonical tree (which corresponds in an ultrametric space to the set of closed balls with radius different than $\infty$ ordered by inclusion). We present a description of definable locally constant functions $f:M\rightarrow T$ in $C$-minimal structures having a canonical tree with infinitely many branches at each node and densely ordered branches. This provides both a description of definable subsets of $T$ in one variable and analogues of known results in algebraically closed valued fields.
The motivation for this paper is to extend the known model theoretic treatment of differential Galois theory to the case of linear difference equations (where the derivative is replaced by an automorphism.) The model theoretic difficulties in this case arise from the fact that the corresponding theory ACFA does not eliminate quantifiers. We therefore study groups of restricted automorphisms, preserving only part of the structure. We give conditions for such a group to be (infinitely) definable, and when these conditions are satisfied we describe the definition of the group and the action expli…
In this short note, we introduce a generalization of the canonical base property, called transfer of internality on quotients. A structural study of groups definable in theories with this property yields as a consequence infinitely many new uncountably categorical additive covers of the complex numbers without the canonical base property.
We discuss the notion of \emph{uniform canonical bases}, both in an abstract manner and specifically for the theory of atomless $L_p$ lattices. We also discuss the connection between the definability of the set of uniform canonical bases and the existence of the theory of beautiful pairs (i.e., with the finite cover property), and prove in particular that the set of uniform canonical bases is definable in algebraically closed metric valued fields.
We prove that unstable dp-finite fields admit definable V-topologies. As a consequence, the henselianity conjecture for dp-finite fields implies the Shelah conjecture for dp-finite fields. This gives a conceptually simpler proof of the classification of dp-finite fields of positive characteristic. For $n \ge 1$, we define a local class of "$W_n$-topological fields", generalizing V-topological fields. A $W_1$-topology is the same thing as a V-topology, and a $W_n$-topology is some higher-rank analogue. If $K$ is an unstable dp-finite field, then the canonical topology is a definable $W_n$-topol…
We show that in an ultraproduct of finite fields, the mod-$n$ nonstandard size of definable sets varies definably in families. Moreover, if $K$ is any pseudofinite field, then one can assign "nonstandard sizes mod $n$" to definable sets in $K$. As $n$ varies, these nonstandard sizes assemble into a definable strong Euler characteristic on $K$, taking values in the profinite completion $\hat{\mathbb{Z}}$ of the integers. The strong Euler characteristic is not canonical, but depends on the choice of a nonstandard Frobenius. When $\operatorname{Abs}(K)$ is finite, the Euler characteristic has som…
For effect algebras, the so-called tense operators were already introduced by Chajda and Paseka. They presented also a canonical construction of them using the notion of a time frame. Tense operators express the quantifiers "it is always going to be the case that" and "it has always been the case that" and hence enable us to express the dimension of time both in the logic of quantum mechanics and in the many-valued logic. A crucial problem concerning tense operators is their representation. Having an effect algebra with tense operators, we can ask if there exists a time frame such that each of…
We study definable sets $D$ of SU-rank 1 in $M^{eq}$, where $M$ is a countable homogeneous and simple structure in a language with finite relational vocabulary. Each such $D$ can be seen as a `canonically embedded structure', which inherits all relations on $D$ which are definable in $M^{eq}$, and has no other definable relations. Our results imply that if no relation symbol of the language of $M$ has arity higher than 2, then there is a close relationship between triviality of dependence and $D$ being a reduct of a binary random structure. Somewhat more preciely: (a) if for every $n \geq 2$, …
We give a new approach to the failure of the Canonical Base Property (CBP) in the so far only known counterexample, produced by Hrushovski, Palacin and Pillay. For this purpose, we will give an alternative presentation of the counterexample as an additive covers of an algebraically closed field. We isolate two fundamental weakenings of the CBP, which already appeared in work of Chatzidakis, and show that they do not hold in the counterexample. In order to do so, a study of imaginaries in additive covers is developed, for elimination of finite imaginaries yields a connection to the CBP. As a by…

Let $S$ be a semiabelian variety over an algebraically closed field, and let $X$ be an irreducible subvariety not contained in a coset of a proper algebraic subgroup of $S$. We show that the number of irreducible components of $[n]^{-1}(X)$ is bounded uniformly in $n$, and moreover that the bound is uniform in families $X_t$. We prove this by purely Galois-theoretic methods. This proof applies in the more general context of divisible abelian groups of finite Morley rank. In this latter context, we deduce a definability result under the assumption of the Definable Multiplicity Property (DMP). W…
We investigate this class of groups originally called ulf (universal locally finite groups) of cardinality $λ$. We prove that for every locally finite group $G$ there is a canonical existentially closed extention of the same cardinality, unique up to isomorphism and increasing with $G$. Also we get, e.g. existence of complete members (i.e. with no non-inner automorphisms) in many cardinals (provably in ZFC). We also get a parallel to stability theory in the sense of investigating definable types.
