The strong dependence of Coulomb energies on nuclear radii makes it possible to extract the latter from calculations of the former. The resulting estimates of neutron skins indicate that two mechanisms are involved. The first one---isovector monopole polarizability---amounts to noting that when a particle is added to a system it drives the radii of neutrons and protons in different directions, tending to equalize the radii of both fluids independently of the neutron excess. This mechanism is well understood and the Duflo-Zuker (small) neutron skin values derived 14 years ago are consistent with recent measures and estimates. The alternative mechanism involves halo orbits whose huge sizes tend to make the neutron skins larger and have a subtle influence on the radial behavior of $sd$ and $pf$ shell nuclei. In particular, they account for the sudden rise in the isotope shifts of nuclei beyond $N=28$ and the near constancy of radii in the $A=40-56$ region. This mechanism, detected here for the first time, is not well understood and may well go beyond Efimov physics usually associated to halo orbits.
The neutron skin and halo distributions in medium and heavy nuclei are calculated within the extended Thomas-Fermi approximation. Calculations are carried out for the effective Skyrme-like forces using the direct variational method. The analytical expression for the isovector shift of the rms radii $Δr_{np}$ as a sum of skin- and halo-like terms is obtained. The contribution of halo and skin terms to $Δr_{np}$ are found to be approximately equal.
The root mean square radii of the proton density distribution in $^{16-24}$O derived from measurements of charge changing cross sections with a carbon target at $\sim$900$A$ MeV together with the matter radii portray thick neutron skin for $^{22 - 24}$O despite $^{22,24}$O being doubly magic. Imprints of the shell closures at $N$ = 14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with it ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO$_{\mathrm{sat}}$ interaction, though skin thickness predictions are …
The effects of neutron skin on the multiplicity ($N_{\rm ch}$) and eccentricity($ε_2$) in relativistic $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV are investigated with the Trento model. It is found that the Ru+Ru/Zr+Zr ratios of the $N_{\rm ch}$ distributions and $ε_{2}$ in mid-central collisions are exquisitely sensitive to the neutron skin type (skin vs.~halo). The state-of-the-art calculations by energy density functional theory (DFT) favor the halo-type neutron skin and can soon be confronted by experimental data. It is demo…
We investigate the ground state properties of $^{22}$C by using a deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model in continuum and explore the interplays among the formation of a halo, deformation effects, the inversion of $sd$ states, the shell evolution, and changes of nuclear magicities. It is revealed that there is an inversion between the two spherical orbitals $2s_{1/2}$ and $1d_{5/2}$ in $^{22}$C compared with the conventional single particle shell structure in stable nuclei. This inversion, together with deformation effects, results in a shrunk halo and a quenched shell gap at $N=16$. I…
The radii of nucleon distribution and neutron skin in nuclei beyond the β-stability line are studied within the extended Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the growth of neutron skin in unstable nuclei does not obey the saturation condition because of the neutron coat. The neutron coat indicates the possibility of giant neutron halo which is growing with moving away from the beta stability line. We demonstrate the presence of strong shell oscillations in the charge radius R_C and the relation of R_C to the isospin shift of neutron-proton chemical potentials Δλ=λ_n-λ_p for nuclei beyond t…
A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for $^{17-22}$N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900$A$ MeV at GSI. Neutron halo effects are signaled for $^{22}$N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at $N$ = 14 arising from the attractive proton-neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. $Ab$ $initio$, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nu…

The proton and neutron distribution in Na isotopes: the development of halo and shell structure
We combine Halo/Cluster Effective Field Theory (H/CEFT) and the Gamow Shell Model (GSM) to describe the $0^+$ ground state of $\rm{^6He}$ as a three-body halo system. We use two-body interactions for the neutron-alpha particle and two-neutron pairs obtained from H/CEFT at leading order, with parameters determined from scattering in the p$_{3/2}$ and s$_0$ channels, respectively. The three-body dynamics of the system is solved using the GSM formalism, where the continuum states are incorporated in the shell model valence space. We find that in the absence of three-body forces the system collaps…
We analyze the influence of the single-particle structure on the neutron density distribution and the neutron skin in Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn, and Pb isotopes. The nucleon density distributions are calculated in the Hartree-Fock+BCS approach with the SLy4 Skyrme force. A close correlation is found between the quantum numbers of the valence neutrons and the changes in the position and the diffuseness of the nuclear surface, which in turn affect the neutron skin thickness. Neutrons in the valence orbitals with low principal quantum number and high angular momentum mainly displace the position of the neut…

Proton radii of nuclei in the $sd$ shell depart appreciably from the asymptotic law, $ρ_π=ρ_0A^{1/3}$. The departure exhibits systematic trends fairly well described by a single phenomenological term in the Duflo-Zuker formulation, which also happens to explain the sudden increase in slope in the isotope shifts of several chains at neutron number $N=28$. It was recently shown that this term is associated with the abnormally large size of the $s_{1/2}$ and $p$ orbits in the $sd$ and $pf$ shells respectively. Further to explore the problem, we propose to calculate microscopically radii in the fo…
Background: A newly identified dripline nucleus $^{31}$F offers a unique opportunity to study the two-neutron ($2n$) correlation at the east shore of the island of inversion where the $N = 28$ shell closure is lost. Purpose: We aim to present the first three-body theoretical results for the radius and total reaction cross sections of $^{31}$F. This will further help to investigate how the pairing and breakdown of the $N = 28$ shell closure influence the formation of the $2n$-halo structure and the anti-halo effect in this mass region. Methods: A $^{29}$F$+n+n$ three-body system is described by…
It is well known that intranuclear-cascade models generally overestimate the cross sections for one-proton removal from heavy, stable nuclei by a high-energy proton beam, but they yield reasonable predictions for one-neutron removal from the same nuclei and for one-nucleon removal from light targets. We use simple shell-model calculations to investigate the reasons of this deficiency. We find that a correct description of the neutron skin and of the energy density in the nuclear surface is crucial for the aforementioned observables. Neither ingredient is sufficient if taken separately.

We study anti-halo effects on reaction cross sections $σ_{\rm R}$ for $^{14,15,16}$C scattering from a $^{12}$C target at 83~MeV/nucleon, using the $g$-matrix double-folding model. $^{15}$C is described by the $^{14}$C~+~$n$ two-body model that reproduces the measured large s-wave spectroscopic factor, i.e., the shell inversion that the 1s$_{1/2}$ orbital is lower than the 0d$_{5/2}$ orbital in energy. $^{16}$C is described by the $^{14}$C~+~$n$~+~$n$ three-body model with the phenomenological three-body force (3BF) that explains the measured small s-wave spectroscopic factor. The 3BF allows t…
The radii of nucleon distribution, bulk density, and neutron skin in nuclei beyond the β-stability line are studied within the direct variational method. We evaluate the partial equation of state of finite nuclei and demonstrate that the bulk density decreases beyond the beta stability line. We show that the growth of the neutron skin in unstable nuclei does not obey the saturation condition because of the polarization effect. The value of the neutron-skin thickness Δr_{np}=\sqrt{<r_n^2>}-\sqrt{<r_p^2>} is caused by the different radii (skin effect) and only slightly by the different shapes (h…
We study whether the neutron skin thickness (NST) of 208Pb originates from the bulk or from the surface of the nucleon density distributions, according to the mean-field models of nuclear structure, and find that it depends on the stiffness of the nuclear symmetry energy. The bulk contribution to NST arises from an extended sharp radius of neutrons, whereas the surface contribution arises from different widths of the neutron and proton surfaces. Nuclear models where the symmetry energy is stiff, as typical relativistic models, predict a bulk contribution in NST of 208Pb about twice as large as…
Radii of charge and neutron distributions are fundamental nuclear properties. They depend on both nuclear interaction parameters related to the equation of state of infinite nuclear matter and on quantal shell effects, which are strongly impacted by the presence of nuclear surface. In this work, by studying the dependence of charge and neutron radii, and neutron skin, on nuclear matter parameters, we assess different mechanisms that drive nuclear sizes. We apply nuclear density functional theory using a family of Skyrme functionals obtained by means of different optimization protocols targetin…
Applications of configuration mixing methods for nuclei near the proton and neutron drip lines are discussed. A short review of magic numbers is presented. Prospects for advances in the regions of four new "outposts" are highlighted: $^{28}$O, $^{42}$Si, $^{60}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. Topics include: shell gaps, single-particle properties, islands-of-inversion, collectivity, neutron decay, neutron halos, two-proton decay, effective charge, and quenching in knockout reactions.
In these proceedings, we present the measurements of neutron skin thickness and nuclear deformation using isobar $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV by the STAR detector. The significant deviations from unity of the isobar ratios of elliptic flow $v_{2}$, triangular flow $v_{3}$, mean $p_{\rm T}$ fluctuations $\langleδp_{\rm T}^{2}\rangle/\langle p_{\rm T}\rangle^{2}$, and asymmetric cumulant ${\rm ac}_{2}\{3\}$ indicate large differences in their quadrupole and octuple deformations. The significant deviations of the isob…
We study whether the neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb originates from the bulk or from the surface of the neutron and proton density distributions in mean field models. We find that the size of the bulk contribution to $Δr_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb strongly depends on the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy, while the surface contribution does not. We note that most mean field models predict a neutron density for ${}^{208}$Pb between the halo and skin type limits. We investigate the dependence of parity- violating electron scattering at the kinematics of the PREX experiment on the…
We apply the Gamow shell model to study $^{25-31}$F isotopes. As both inter-nucleon correlations and continuum coupling are properly treated therein, the structure shape of $^{31}$F at large distance can be analyzed precisely. For this, one-nucleon densities, root-mean square radii and correlation densities are calculated in neutron-rich fluorine isotopes. It is then suggested that $^{31}$F exhibits a two-neutron halo structure, built from both continuum coupling and nucleon-nucleon correlations.
Using a simple model based on the knowledge of spherical and deformed Woods-Saxon potentials, it is shown that the recent observation of halo phenomena in $^{29}$F can be interpreted as an evidence for the prolate deformation of the ground state of $^{29}$F. The prolate deformation is the result of the shell structure, which is unique in one-neutron resonant levels, in particular near degeneracy of the neutron 1$f_{7/2}$ and 2$p_{3/2}$ resonant levels, together with the strong preference of prolate shape by the proton number $Z$ = 9. On the other hand, in oxygen isotopes spherical shape is so …
The ground-state properties of neutron-rich exotic Na and Mg isotopes with even numbers of neutrons, N, are studied up to driplines. The shell-model calculations with an ab initio effective nucleon-nucleon interaction reported in [Tsunoda, Otsuka, Takayanagi et al., Nature 587, 66 (2020)] are extended to observables such as magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and charge and matter radii. Good agreements with experimental data are found, and predictions are shown up to driplines. A prescription to extract the deformation parameters for the eigenstates of Monte Carlo Shell Model is …
The exotic phenomenon of two-neutron halos and 2n-radioactivity are explored in the neutron-rich $^{40,42,44}$Mg by employing various variants of the relativistic mean-field approach. The extended tail of spatial density distributions including the enhanced neutron radii and skin thickness, pairing correlations, single-particle spectrum and wave functions predict $^{40,42,44}$Mg to be strong candidates for deformed neutron halos. Weakening of magicity at N$=$28 plays a significant role in the existence of a weakly bound halo in $^{40}$Mg which is currently the heaviest isotope of Mg accessible…
The even-Z odd-N neutron-halo nuclei, which are the possible lightest neutron-halo nuclei heavier than $^{37}$Mg, are explored by studying the shell-structure unique in weakly-bound neutrons for spherical or deformed shape. It is pointed out that due to the narrowed N=50 spherical energy-gap and a few resulting close-lying neutron one-particle levels, 1g$_{9/2}$, 3s$_{1/2}$, and 2d$_{5/2}$, for spherical shape, nuclei with some weakly-bound neutrons filling in those levels may be deformed and have a good chance to show deformed s-wave halo. Promising candidates are $^{71}_{24}$Cr$_{47}$, $^{73…
We study theoretically the electric dipole transitions of even Ni isotopes at low energies, using the self-consistent quasi-particle random-phase approximation (RPA) with the D1S Gogny interaction and a continuum-RPA model with the SLy4 Skyrme force. We analyze isoscalar states, isovector states, and the dipole polarizability. We define a reference value for the polarizability, to remove a trivial dependence on the mass number. We compare our results with data and other calculations, with a focus on collective states, shell effects, and threshold transitions. Our results support the presence o…
The symmetry energy in nuclei is studied using a monopole-monopole two boby interaction which has an isospin dependent term. A Hartree theory is developed for this interaction which has an oscillator shell model basis with corresponding shell structure. The role of shell structure on the symmetry energy is then studied. We also find that the strength of the Heisenberg interaction is very important for understanding the difference between proton and neutron radii and features associated with halo nuclei. By using a phenomenologically successful Woods-Saxon potential, I study the shape and shell structure of (A) neutron drip line nuclei with 10 \leq N \leq 60, (B) neutron-rich nuclei related to the r- process with 40 \leq N \leq 90, and (C) one-particle spectra in the potential provided by the nucleus 70Fe as a representative of so-called N=40 "island of inversion (IoI)" nuclei. First, the shell structure that is unique in very weakly-bound neutrons is systematically studied, and the approximate neutron number of odd-N nuclei at which spherical (or deformed) halos can be found is pinned down. S…
Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on $^{208}$Pb has been extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be 6.70$\pm 0.03(stat)$ fm and 0.55$\pm 0.01(stat)$$^{+0.02}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$=0.15$\pm 0.03(stat)$$^{+0.01}_{-0.03}(sys)$ f…
We report the measurement of reaction cross sections ($σ_R^{\rm ex}$) of $^{27,29}$F with a carbon target at RIKEN. The unexpectedly large $σ_R^{\rm ex}$ and derived matter radius identify $^{29}$F as the heaviest two-neutron Borromean halo to date. The halo is attributed to neutrons occupying the $2p_{3/2}$ orbital, thereby vanishing the shell closure associated with the neutron number $N = 20$. The results are explained by state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Coupled-cluster computations based on effective field theories of the strong nuclear force describe the matter radius of $^{27}$…
We present an equation of state (EoS) for neutron stars using the relativistic mean-field model with isoscalar- and isovector-meson mixing. Taking into account the results of the neutron skin thickness, $R_{\rm skin}$, of $^{208}$Pb reported by the PREX collaboration, the dimensionless tidal deformability of a canonical neutron star observed from GW170817, and a $2.6$ $M_{\odot}$ compact star implied by the secondary component of GW190814, a new effective interaction is constructed so as to reproduce the saturation condition of nuclear matter and the ground-state properties of finite, closed-s…
In this work, Na isotopes with mass varying from $A=$ 20 to 31 have been studied using DJ16A, JISP16 and N3LO microscopic effective interactions in the $sd$-shell. These effective interactions are derived for $sd$-shell using no-core shell model wavefunctions and a unitary transformation method. We have also performed calculation with IMSRG effective interactions targeted for a particular nucleus. The studies include a detailed analysis of ground state binding energy, low-lying spectra, and electromagnetic properties such as reduced electric quadrupole transition strengths, quadrupole and magn…
Beta-delayed proton emission from the neutron halo ground state of $^{11}$Be raised much attention due to the unusually high decay rate. It was argued that this may be due to the existence of a resonance just above the proton decay threshold. In this Letter, we use the lenses of real-energy continuum shell model to describe several observables including the Gamow-Teller rates for the $β^-$-delayed $α$ and proton decays, and argue that, within our model, the large $β^-{\rm p}$ branching ratio cannot be reconciled with other data.
