Using a simple model based on the knowledge of spherical and deformed Woods-Saxon potentials, it is shown that the recent observation of halo phenomena in $^{29}$F can be interpreted as an evidence for the prolate deformation of the ground state of $^{29}$F. The prolate deformation is the result of the shell structure, which is unique in one-neutron resonant levels, in particular near degeneracy of the neutron 1$f_{7/2}$ and 2$p_{3/2}$ resonant levels, together with the strong preference of prolate shape by the proton number $Z$ = 9. On the other hand, in oxygen isotopes spherical shape is so much favored by the proton number $Z$ = 8 that the presence of possible neutron shell-structure may not make the system deformed. Thus, the strong preference of particular shape by the proton numbers 8 and 9, respectively, together with a considerable amount of the energy difference between the neutron $1d_{3/2}$ and $2s_{1/2}$ orbits in oxygen isotopes seems to play an important role in the phenomena of oxygen neutron drip line anomaly, as was suggested by H. Sakurai {\it et al.} in 1999.
The relationship between the deformed harmonic oscillator and the formation of molecular cluster structures, whereby valence neutrons are exchanged between cluster cores, is examined. It is found that there is a strong connection between the properties of the valence orbitals associated with deformed structures in the deformed harmonic oscillator and the molecular orbitals created by linear combinations of single-centre orbitals around nuclear clusters. The conclusion is that in addition to the appearance of clustering in the deformed harmonic oscillator that \emph{every} prolate deformed clus…
We consider the possibility of identifying nuclei exhibiting the partial dynamical SU(3) symmetry (SU(3)-PDS) as those having excitation energy ratio R(4/2)>3.00 . For this purpose, the level energy spectra of a set of 51 nuclei in the rare earth and actinide regions which presenting an axially deformed prolate rotational structure were analyzed via nuclear partial dynamical SU(3) symmetry in the framework of interacting boson model, to see if the SU(3)-PDS is broadly applicable, and where, how, and in which nuclei it breaks down. Overall, the PDS works very well, the predictions of such inter…
We use the considered axial deformed relativistic mean field theory to perform systematical calculations for Z=112 and 104 isotopic chains with force parameters NL3, NL-SH and NL-Z2 sets. Three deformed chains (oblate, moderate prolate and super-deformed chain) are found for Z=112 and 104 isotopic chains. It is found that there is a chain of super-deformed nuclei which can increase the stability of superheavy nuclei in the Z=112 isotopic chain. Shape coexistence is found for Z=112, 104 isotopic chain and the position is defined. For moderate prolate deformed chains of Z=112 and 104, there is s…
In a nucleus which has two Hartree states deformed in quadrupole symmetry, i.e., prolate state and oblate state, the nuclear residual interaction derived in the present theory beyond the Hartree approximation acts as the restoring force for the spherical symmetry of the nuclear system to be recovered so that the deformed nucleus makes collective tunneling transitions between prolate states and oblate states. We derive the Hamiltonian that is effective not only for the Hartree states but also for the collective tunneling transitions between the Hartree states. Solving the secular equation for t…
We study the breathing oscillations in bose-fermi mixtures with Yb isotopes in the largely prolate deformed trap, which are realized by Kyoto group. We choose the three combinations of the Yb isotopes, Yb170-Yb171, Yb170-Yb173 and Yb174-Yb173, whose boson-fermion interactions are weakly repulsive, strongly attractive and strongly repulsive. The collective oscillations in the deformed trap are calculated in the dynamical time-development approach, which is formulated with the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii and the Vlasov equations. We analyze the results in the time-development approach with t…
Initial eccentricity of the interacting volume of QCD matter created in collisions of prolate and oblate nuclei is studied using optical Glauber simulation. Collisions of prolate 165-Ho + 165-Ho nuclei and Au+Au nuclei are investigated (assuming oblate ground-state deformation for 197-Au nucleus). Qualitative predictions are obtained for RHIC energies.
Using a new approximate analytic parameter-free proxy-SU(3) scheme, we make simple predictions of shape observables for deformed nuclei, namely gamma and beta deformation variables, the global feature of prolate dominance and the locus of the prolate-oblate shape transition. The predictions are compared with empirical results.
Using a new approximate analytic parameter-free proxy-SU(3) scheme, we make simple predictions for the global feature of prolate dominance in deformed nuclei and the locus of the prolate-oblate shape transition and compare these with empirical data.
A new approach to the old problem of the predominance of prolate deformations among well deformed nuclei is proposed within the shell model framework. The parameter space is explored using the ensemble of random rotationally-invariant interactions. Subsets with rotational energy ratio $E(4^{+})/E(2^{+})$ and the rigid-rotor relation between the quadrupole moment $Q(2^{+})$ and the transition probability $B(E2;2^{+}\to 0^{+}))$ are found exhibiting prolate predominance. We identify matrix elements of the effective forces responsible for the predominance of prolate deformation.
We analyze the ability of the three different Liquid Drop Mass (LDM) formulas to describe nuclear masses for nuclei in various deformation regions. Separating the 2149 measured nuclear species in eight sets with similar quadrupole deformations, we show that the masses of prolate deformed nuclei are better described than those of spherical ones. In fact, the prolate deformed nuclei are fitted with an RMS smaller than 750 keV, while for spherical and semi-magic species the RMS is always larger than 2000 keV. These results are found to be independent of pairing. The macroscopic sector of the Dufl…
We show that the Liquid Drop Model is best suited to describe the masses of prolate deformed nuclei than of spherical nuclei. To this end three Liquid Drop Mass formulas are employed to describe nuclear masses of eight sets of nuclei with similar quadrupole deformations. It is shown that they are able to fit the measured masses of prolate deformed nuclei with an RMS smaller than 750 keV, while for the spherical nuclei the RMS is, in the three cases, larger than 2000 keV. The RMS of the best fit of the masses of semi-magic nuclei is also larger than 2000 keV. The parameters of the three models …

The origin of the dominance of prolate shapes over oblate ones of the ground states of atomic nuclei is investigated with the Nilsson-Strutinsky method. The number of prolate nuclei among all the deformed even-even nuclei is calculated as a function of the strengths of the spin-orbit and the l^2 terms of the Nilsson potential. The latter simulates a square-well like radial profile of the mean potential. The ratio of prolate nuclei is 86% with the standard strengths corresponding to the actual atomic nuclei. By weakening the spin-orbit potential, the ratio oscillates strongly, having a local mi…
We study the breathing oscillations in bose-fermi mixtures in the axially-symmetric deformed trap of prolate, spherical and oblate shapes, and clarify the deformation dependence of the frequencies and the characteristics of collective oscillations. The collective oscillations of the mixtures in deformed traps are calculated in the scaling method. In largely-deformed prolate and oblate limits and spherical limit, we obtain the analytical expressions of the collective frequencies. The full calculation shows that the collective oscillations become consistent with the analytically-obtained frequen…
We explore the rotational feature of deformed halos by performing the angular momentum projection (AMP) on the ground state wave functions obtained from the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory (DRHBc) in continuum. The DRHBc+AMP approach self-consistently describes the coupling between single particle bound states and the continuum not only in the ground state but also in rotational states. The rotational modes of deformed halos in $^{42}$Mg and $^{44}$Mg are investigated by studying properties of rotational states such as excitation energy, configuration, and density distribution.…
In this contribution we present some recent results about neutron halos in deformed nuclei. A deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum has been developed and the halo phenomenon in deformed weakly bound nuclei is investigated. These weakly bound quantum systems present interesting examples for the study of the interdependence between the deformation of the core and the particles in the halo. Magnesium and neon isotopes are studied and detailed results are presented for the deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nuclei 42Mg. The core of this nucleus is prolate, but the halo …
We consider several variants of SU(3) partial dynamical symmetry in relation to quadrupole shapes in nuclei. Explicit construction of Hamiltonians with such property is presented in the framework of the interacting boson model (IBM), including higher order terms, and in its proton-neutron extension (IBM-2). The cases considered include a single prolate-deformed shape with solvable ground and $γ$ or $β$ bands, coexisting prolate-oblate shapes with solvable ground bands, and aligned axially-deformed proton-neutron shapes with solvable symmetric ground and $γ$ bands and mixed-symmetry scissors an…
Shell structure of low-lying neutron resonant levels in axially-symmetric quadrupole-deformed potentials is discussed, which seems analogous to that of weakly-bound neutrons. As numerical examples, nuclei slightly outside the neutron-drip-line, $^{39}_{12}$Mg$_{27}$ and $^{21}_{6}$C$_{15}$, are studied. For the lowest resonance I obtain $I^π$ = $Ω^π$ = 5/2$^{-}$ for $^{39}$Mg which is likely to be prolately deformed, while $I^π$ = $Ω^π$ = 1/2$^{+}$ may be assigned to the nucleus $^{21}$C which may be oblately deformed. Consequently, $^{21}$C will not be observed as a recognizable resonant stat…
Halo phenomena in deformed nuclei are investigated within a deformed relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (DRHB) theory. These weakly bound quantum systems present interesting examples for the study of the interdependence between the deformation of the core and the particles in the halo. Contributions of the halo, deformation effects, and large spatial extensions of these systems are described in a fully self-consistent way by the DRHB equations in a spherical Woods-Saxon basis with the proper asymptotic behavior at large distance from the nuclear center. Magnesium and neon isotopes are studied and…
A study of the effect of deformation and pairing on the development of halo nuclei is presented. Exploratory three-body $core+n+n$ calculations show that both the NN interaction and the deformation/excitation of the core hinder the formation of the halo. Preliminary self-consistent mean-field calculations are used to search for regions in the nuclear chart where halos could potentially develop. These are also briefly discussed.
Deformed shell structures in nuclear mean-field potentials are systematically investigated as functions of deformation and surface diffuseness. As the mean-field model to investigate nuclear shell structures in a wide range of mass numbers, we propose the radial power-law potential model, V \propto r^α, which enables a simple semiclassical analysis by the use of its scaling property. We find that remarkable shell structures emerge at certain combinations of deformation and diffuseness parameters, and they are closely related to the periodic-orbit bifurcations. In particular, significant roles …
Deformation properties of weakly bound nuclei are discussed in the deformed single-particle model. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a very small binding energy the valence particles in specific orbitals, characterized by a very small projection of single-particle angular momentum onto the symmetry axis of a nucleus, can give rise to the halo structure which is completely decoupled from the rest of the system. The quadrupole deformation of the resulting halo is completely determined by the intrinsic structure of a weakly bound orbital, irrespective of the shape of the core.
Magnetic dipole(M1) transitions of N=11 nuclei, $^{17}$C and $^{21}$Ne are investigated by using shell model and deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock+blocked BCS wave functions. Shell model calculations predict well observed energy spectra and magnetic dipole transitions in $^{21}$Ne, while the results are rather poor to predict these observables in $^{17}$C. In the deformed HF calculations, the ground states of two nuclei are shown to have large prolate deformations close to $β_2$=0.4. It is also pointed out that the first $K^π=1/2^+$ state in $^{21}$Ne is prolately deformed, while the first $K^π=1/2…
Experimental data on Coulomb breakup and neutron removal indicate that 31Ne is one of the heaviest halo nuclei discovered so far. The possible ground state of 31Ne is either 3/2- coming from p-wave halo or 1/2+ from s-wave halo. In this work, we develop a treatable model to include deformed wave functions and a dynamical knockout formalism which includes the dependence on the nuclear orientation to study the neutron removal from 31Ne projectiles at energies around E=200 MeV/nucleon. A detailed account of the effects of deformation on cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions is ma…

Using the Glauber theory, we calculate reaction cross sections for the deformed halo nucleus $^{31}$Ne. To this end, we assume that the $^{31}$Ne nucleus takes the $^{30}$Ne + $n$ structure. In order to take into account the rotational excitation of the core nucleus $^{30}$Ne, we employ the particle-rotor model (PRM). We compare the results to those in the adiabatic limit of PRM, that is, the Nilsson model, and show that the Nilsson model works reasonably well for the reaction cross sections of $^{31}$Ne. We also investigate the dependence of the reaction cross sections on the ground state pro…
The evolution of shapes and low-energy shape coexistence is analyzed in neutron-deficient Nd and Sm nuclei, using a five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian (5DCH). Deformation energy surfaces, calculated with the relativistic energy density functional PC-PK1 and a separable finite-range pairing interaction, exhibit a transition from spherical shapes near $N=80$, to $γ-$soft shapes, and to prolate deformed minima in lighter isotopes. The corresponding 5DCH model calculation, based on the self-consistent mean-field potentials, reproduces the empirical isotopic trend of characteristic …
The shape of a nucleus is one of fundamental nuclear properties. We perform a systematic investigation of bubble nuclei that also exhibit shape coexistence in Hf, W, Os, Pt and Hg even-even isotopes using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum. For a systematic study, we first consider nuclear bubble structures and shape coexistence separately. We confirm that deformations and pairing correlations hinder bubble structures by comparing our results with those from relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory that assumes spherical symmetry in nuclei. We then predict…

The even-Z odd-N neutron-halo nuclei, which are the possible lightest neutron-halo nuclei heavier than $^{37}$Mg, are explored by studying the shell-structure unique in weakly-bound neutrons for spherical or deformed shape. It is pointed out that due to the narrowed N=50 spherical energy-gap and a few resulting close-lying neutron one-particle levels, 1g$_{9/2}$, 3s$_{1/2}$, and 2d$_{5/2}$, for spherical shape, nuclei with some weakly-bound neutrons filling in those levels may be deformed and have a good chance to show deformed s-wave halo. Promising candidates are $^{71}_{24}$Cr$_{47}$, $^{73…
We study the exotic deformed nucleus $^{31}$Ne using an approach that combines self-consistent structure and reaction theory. We utilize the fully-relativistic, microscopic deformed Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) to demonstrate that deformation and pairing correlations give rise to a halo structure with large-amplitude $p$-wave configuration in $^{31}$Ne. We then use the valence nucleon wave functions and angle-averaged density distributions of $^{30}$Ne from this model as input for a Glauber reaction model to study the observables of neutron-rich Neon isotopes and search for h…
A deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum has been developed for the study of neutron halos in deformed nuclei and the halo phenomenon in deformed weakly bound nuclei is investigated. Magnesium and neon isotopes are studied and some results are presented for the deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nuclei 44Mg and 36Ne. The core of the former nucleus is prolate, but the halo has a slightly oblate shape. This indicates a decoupling of the halo orbitals from the deformation of the core. The generic conditions for the existence of halos in deformed nuclei and for the occurr…
Halo phenomenon in deformed nuclei is studied by using a fully self-consistent deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model in a spherical Woods-Saxon basis with the proper asymptotic behavior at large distance from the nuclear center. Taking a deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nucleus $^{44}$Mg as an example and by examining contributions of the halo, deformation effects, and large spatial extensions, we show a decoupling of the halo orbitals from the deformation of the core.
The spherical-to-prolate shape transition in neutron-rich Cr isotopes from N = 34 to 42 is studied by solving the collective Schr\"odinger equation for the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. The collective potential and inertial functions are microscopically derived with use of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus local quasiparticle random-phase approximation method. Nature of the quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states is discussed by evaluating excitation spectra and electric quadrupole moments and transition strengths. The result of calculation indicates that …
We explore the evolution of the structure of the ground state of a nucleus with two valence nucleons as the system approaches the two particle threshold. We use a three-body model of $core+n+n$ where the core is deformed and allowed to excite. We find that both NN correlations and correlations due to deformation/excitation of the core inhibit the formation of halos. Our results suggest that it is unlikely to find halo nuclei on the dripline of deformed nuclei.
Based on the competition between $γ$-stable and $γ$-rigid collective motions mediated by a rigidity parameter, a two-parameter exactly separable version of the Bohr Hamiltonian is proposed. The $γ$-stable part of the Hamiltonian is restricted to stiff oscillations around the $γ$ value of the rigid motion. The separated potential for $β$ and $γ$ shape variables is chosen such that in the lower limit of this parameter, the model recovers exactly the ES-$X(5)$ model, while in the upper limit it tends to the prolate $γ$-rigid solution $X(3)$. The combined effect of the rigidity and stiffness param…
Using the axially deformed relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (D-RHFB) model, we explore the mechanism behind the parity inversion and halo occurrence in $^{11}$Be, which are well reproduced by the RHF Lagrangian PKA1. It is illustrated that evidently enhanced deformation effects by the $π$-pseudo-vector and $ρ$-tensor couplings in PKA1 are crucial for correctly describing both even-parity ground state (GS) and neutron halo of $^{11}$Be. Coupling with the deformation, the intrude $1d_{5/2}$ component largely enhances the couplings between the even-parity orbit $1/2_2^+$ and the nuclear core …
Temperature and angular momentum induced shape changes in the well deformed 100 Nb have been investigated within the theoretical framework of Statistical theory combined with triaxially deformed Nilson potential and Strutinsky prescription. Two shape coexistence, one in the ground state of 104 Nb between oblate and triaxial shapes and another one between oblate and rarely seen prolate non-collective shapes in excited hot rotating 100 Nb at the mid spin values around 14-16h are reported for the first time. The level density parameter indicates the influence of the shell effects and changes dras…
The structures of the ground and excited states of sd-shell nuclei: Ca-40 and Ar-36 were studied with a method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. Recently observed rotational bands were described with deformed intrinsic states which are dominated by excited configurations such as 4p-4h, 8p-8h and 4p-8h states. The results showed the coexistence of various kinds of exotic shapes with oblate, prolate and large prolate deformatios in the low-energy region of Ca-40. Possible cluster aspects in heavy sd-shell nuclei were implied in these exotic shapes.
The neutron drop is firstly investigated in an axially symmetric harmonic oscillator (ASHO) field, whose potential strengths of different directions can be controlled artificially. The shape of the neutron drop will change from spherical to oblate or prolate according to the anisotropy of the external field. With the potential strength increasing in the axial direction, the neutron prefers to occupy the orbital perpendicular to the symmetry axis. On the contrary, the neutron likes to stay in the orbital parallel to the symmetry axis when the potential strength increases in the radial direction…

It is known that nuclear deformation plays an important role in inducing the halo structure in neutron-rich nuclei by mixing several angular momentum components. While previous theoretical studies on this problem in the literature assume axially symmetric deformation, we here consider non-axially symmetric deformations. With triaxial deformation, the $Ω$ quantum number is admixed in a single-particle wave function, where $Ω$ is the projection of the single-particle angular momentum on the symmetric axis, and the halo structure may arise even when it is absent with the axially symmetric deforma…

The properties of the deformed halo of 31Ne were discussed using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics plus resonating group method (AMD+RGM). The AMD+RGM calculations describe a large neutron radius for the ground state and reveal that the ground state is dominated by core-excited components. The resonant states were also investigated by applying the analytical continuation of the coupling constant. It was found that the first excited state (the 5/2- state) is also dominated by core-excited components and has a small decay width, whereas the second excited state (the 7/2- state) is dominated…

We investigate the electric dipole response of $^{34}$Na, a probable $p$-wave one-neutron halo nucleus, lying in the "island of inversion" and having a deformed structure. We use a semi-analytic approach to probe the dipole response and further compare the results obtained from a post form finite-range distorted wave Born approximation theory of Coulomb breakup. The effects of deformation are figured out on the peak positions of the electric dipole strength distribution which further constraint the one-neutron separation energy of the deformed projectile and it leads to a two-dimensional scali…
The exotic phenomenon of two-neutron halos and 2n-radioactivity are explored in the neutron-rich $^{40,42,44}$Mg by employing various variants of the relativistic mean-field approach. The extended tail of spatial density distributions including the enhanced neutron radii and skin thickness, pairing correlations, single-particle spectrum and wave functions predict $^{40,42,44}$Mg to be strong candidates for deformed neutron halos. Weakening of magicity at N$=$28 plays a significant role in the existence of a weakly bound halo in $^{40}$Mg which is currently the heaviest isotope of Mg accessible…

The coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach with quasiparticle blocking has been applied to study the odd-A weakly bound nuclei $^{17,19}$B and $^{37}$Mg, in which halo structures have been reported in experiments. The Skyrme nuclear forces SLy4 and UNEDF1 have been adopted in our calculations. The results with and without blocking have been compared to demonstrate the emergence of deformed halo structures due to blocking effects. In our calculations, $^{19}$B and $^{37}$Mg have remarkable features of deformed halos.
We investigate the evolution of structure in the zirconium isotopes where one of the most complex situations encountered in nuclear physics occurs. We demonstrate the role of two concurrent types of quantum phase transitions, sharing a common critical point. The first type, involves an abrupt crossing of coexisting normal and intruder configurations. The second type, involves a gradual shape-phase transition within the intruder configuration, changing from weakly-deformed to prolate-deformed and finally to gamma-unstable. Evidence for this scenario is provided by a detailed comparison with exp…
