In this note, we show that an uncountable locally free group, and therefore every locally free group, has a free subgroup whose cardinality is the same as that of $G$. This result directly improve the main result in [T. Nishinaka,"Group rings of countable non-abelian locally free groups are primitive", Int. J. algebra and computation, 21(3)(2011), 409-431] and establish the primitivity of group rings of locally free groups.
We show every locally solvable subgroup of PLo(I) is countable. A corollary is that an uncountable wreath product of copies of $\mathbb{Z}$ with itself does not embed into PLo(I).
We show that if a nontrivial group admits a locally invariant ordering, then it admits uncountably many locally invariant orderings. For the case of a left-orderable group, we provide an explicit construction of uncountable families of locally invariant orderings; for a general group we provide an existence theorem that applies compactness to yield uncountably many locally invariant orderings. Along the way, we define and investigate the space of locally invariant orderings of a group, the natural group actions on this space, and their relationship to the space of left-orderings.
We construct an uncountable family of periodic locally soluble groups which are hereditarily just infinite. We also show that the associated full C*-algebra C*(G) is just infinite for many groups $G$ in this family.
Higman proved in 1952 that every free group is non-commutatively slender, this is to say that if G is a free group and h is a homomorphism from the countable complete free product (X_omega Z) to G, then there exists a finite subset F of omega and a homomorphism h:*_{i in F} Z --> G such that h=h rho_F, where rho_F is the natural map from (X_{i in omega})Z to *_{i in F}Z . Corresponding to the abelian case this phenomenon was called the non-commutative Specker Phenomenon. In this paper we show that Higman's result fails if one passes from countable to uncountable. In particular, we show that fo…
We study algebraic properties on a group G such that if the discrete group G has these properties then every locally compact shift continuous topology on G with adjoined zero is either compact, or discrete. We introduce electorally flexible and electorally stable groups and establish their properties. In particular, we prove that every group with an infinite cyclic subgroup of an infinite index and every uncountable commutative group are electorally flexible, and show that every countable locally finite group is electorally stable. The main result of the paper is the following: if G is a discr…
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$ and $N$ a subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of $D$. Assume that $N$ contains a non-abelian solvable subgroup. In this paper, we study the problem on the existence of non-abelian free subgroups in $N$. In particular, we show that if either $N$ is algebraic over $F$ or $F$ is uncountable, then $N$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup.
We prove that numerous negatively curved simply connected locally compact polyhedral complexes, admitting a discrete cocompact group of automorphisms, have automorphism groups which are locally compact, uncountable, non linear and virtually simple. Examples include hyperbolic buildings, Cayley graphs of word hyperbolic Coxeter systems, and generalizations of cubical complexes, that we call even polyhedral complexes. We use tools introduced by Tits in the case of automorphism groups of trees, and Davis-Moussong's geometric realisation of Coxeter systems.
The paper is devoted to a study of certain fixed point properties, and their relatives, in the context of full automorphism groups of countable rooted trees. Namely, we study Serre's property (FA'), also called unsplittability, property (FA), the uncountable strong cofinality, and ample generics. We give a new proof of a theorem of Psaltis to the extent that automorphism groups of rooted trees are unsplittable, and show under what circumstances automorphism groups of rooted trees have uncountable strong cofinality (and thus property (FA).) Also, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition fo…
We address two questions of Simon Thomas. First, we show that for any n>2 one can find a four generated free subgroup of SLn(Z) which is profinitely dense. More generally, we show that an arithmetic group Γwhich admits the congruence subgroup property, has a profinitely dense free subgroup with an explicit bound of its rank. Next, we show that the set of profinitely dense, locally free subgroups of such an arithmetic group Γis uncountable.
The description of the subgroup structure of a non-commutative division ring is the subject of the intensive study in the theory of division rings in particular, and of the theory of skew linear groups in general. This study is still so far to be complete. In this paper, we study this problem for weakly locally finite division rings. Such division rings constitute a large class which strictly contains the class of locally finite division rings.
In this paper, in the first we give definitions of some classes of division rings which strictly contain the class of centrally finite division rings. One of our main purpose is to construct non-trivial examples of rings of new defined classes. Further, we study linear groups over division rings of these classes. Our new obtained results generalize precedent results for centrally finite division rings.
The space of closed subgroups of a locally compact topological group is endowed with a natural topology, called the Chabauty topology. We completely describe the space of closed sugroups of the group RxZ, which is not trivial : for example, its fundamental group is uncountable.
If G is a locally essential subgroup of a compact abelian group K, then: (i) t(G)=w(G)=w(K), where t(G) is the tightness of G; (ii) if G is radial, then K must be metrizable; (iii) G contains a super-sequence S converging to 0 such that |S|=w(G)=w(K). Items (i)--(iii) hold when G is a dense locally minimal subgroup of K. We show that locally minimal, locally precompact abelian groups of countable tightness are metrizable. In particular, a minimal abelian group of countable tightness is metrizable. This answers a question of O. Okunev posed in 2007. For every uncountable cardinal kappa, we cons…
We prove that every group ring of a non-abelian locally free group which is the union of an ascending sequence of free groups is primitive. In particular, every group ring of a countable non-abelian locally free group is primitive. In addition, by making use of the result, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for group rings of ascending HNN extensions of free groups to be primitive, which extends the known result for the countable case to the general cardinality case. In order to prove the main theorem, we state some graph-theoretic results and apply them to to Formanek's method.
Let $B^\times$ be the biset functor over $\mathbb{F}_2$ sending a finite group~$G$ to the group $B^\times(G)$ of units of its Burnside ring $B(G)$, and let $\widehat{B^\times}$ be its dual functor. The main theorem of this paper gives a characterization of the cokernel of the natural injection from $B^\times$ in the dual Burnside functor $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_2B}$, or equivalently, an explicit set of generators $\mathcal{G}_S$ of the kernel $L$ of the natural surjection $\mathbb{F}_2B\to \widehat{B^\times}$. This yields a two terms projective resolution of $\widehat{B^\times}$, leading to some …
