It is shown that the vector current contribution of neutrino interaction with electrons in ion gives rise to oscillating component, which is absent for the axial-vector contribution, when a single neutrino is detected in the recently proposed neutrino pair beam. CP violation measurements are thus possible with high precision along with determination of mass hierarchical patterns.
We propose an ansatz, named the "particle ansatz", that in the rest frame of a flavor neutrino all its mass eigenstate momentums should simultaneously be zero. Under the particle ansatz, the mass measurable phase differences (mmPhDs) can be derived as $Δϕ_{ji}\simeq [2m_{ν_α}(m_j-m_i)/4 E_{ν_α}]L$. We show that using mmPhDs all three neutrino masses can be determined. In the foreseeable future all neutrino masses are expected to be determined by the spectral analysis of neutrino experiments.
We calculate the range of predicted values for 10 quantities that will be measured by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). We use neutrino oscillation solutions (vacuum and MSW; active and sterile neutrinos) that are globally consistent with all available neutrino data and estimate realistic theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The neutral current to charged current double ratio is predicted to be more than 9 sigma from the no-oscillation solution for all of the currently favored neutrino oscillation solutions. The best-fit oscillation solutions predict a CC day-night rate difference…
It is shown that the experiment on recoilless resonant emission and absorption of $\bar ν_{e}$, proposed recently by Raghavan, could have an important impact on our understanding of the physics of neutrino oscillations.
We examine the prospects for determining the neutrino mixing matrix and for observing CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations in four-neutrino models. We focus on a general class of four-neutrino models with two pairs of nearly degenerate mass eigenstates separated by approximately 1 eV, which can describe the solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino data. We present a general parametrization of these models and discuss in detail the determination of the mixing parameters and the mass matrix texture from current and future neutrino data in the case where $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ each mix primarily with…
According to standard quantum theory, the time evolution operator of a quantum system is independent of the state of the system. One can, however, consider systems in which this is not the case: the evolution operator may depend on the density operator itself. The presence of such modifications of quantum theory can be tested in long baseline oscillation experiments.
A consistent description of the results of the neutrino oscillation experiments carried out so far can be obtained from three basic properties of neutrinos and the parameters of the Hamiltonian matrix. Using these basic neutrino properties, an exact relation for the oscillation amplitudes of moving neutrinos is derived.
We discuss reactor antineutrino oscillations with non-standard interactions (NSIs) at the neutrino production and detection processes. The neutrino oscillation probability is calculated with a parametrization of the NSI parameters by splitting them into the averages and differences of the production and detection processes respectively. The average parts induce constant shifts of the neutrino mixing angles from their true values, and the difference parts can generate the energy (and baseline) dependent corrections to the initial mass-squared differences. We stress that only the shifts of mass-…
We have studied $CPT$ violation in neutrino oscillation considering three flavor framework with matter effect. We have constructed a new way to find the oscillation probability incorporating $CPT$ violating terms without any approximation. Then $CPT$ violation with atmospheric neutrinos for a magnetized iron calorimeter detector considering the muons (directly measurable with high resolution) of the charge current events has been studied for zero and nonzero $θ_{13}$ values. It is found that a potential bound of $δb_{32} \lapp 6\times 10^{-24}$ GeV at 99% CL can be obtained with 1 Mton.year ex…
Neutrino oscillation scenarios predict correlations, and zones of avoidance, among measurable quantities such as spectral energy distortions, total fluxes, time dependences, and flavor content. The comparison of observed and predicted correlations will enhance the diagnostic power of solar neutrino experiments. A general test of all presently-allowed (two neutrino) oscillation solutions is that future measurements must yield values outside the predicted zones of avoidance. To illustrate the discriminatory power of the simultaneous analysis of multiple observables, we map currently allowed regi…
Leptonic unitarity triangle (LUT) provides a geometric description of CP violations in the lepton-neutrino sector and is directly measurable in principle. In this work, we reveal that the angles in the LUT have definite physical meaning, and demonstrate the exact connection of the LUT to neutrino oscillations. For the first time, we prove that these leptonic angles act as phase shifts in neutrino oscillations, by shifting Δm^{2}L/2E to Δm^{2}L/2E + α, where (L, E, α) denote the baseline length, neutrino energy and corresponding angle of the LUT. Each LUT has three independent parameters and co…
We bring attention to the fact that in order to understand existing data on neutrino oscillations, and to design future experiments, it is imperative to appreciate the role of quantum entanglement. Once this is accounted for, the resulting energy-momentum conserving phenomenology requires a single new parameter related to disentanglement of a neutrino from its partners. This parameter may not be CP symmetric. We illustrate the new ideas, with potentially measurable effects, in the context of a novel experiment recently proposed by Gavrin, Gorbachev, Veretenkin, and Cleveland. The strongest imp…
We define the ratio R = (No. of observed electron events)/ (No. of expected muon events - No. of observed muon events) as a measure for relative importance of $ν_μ\to ν_e$ and $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillations which will be measurable in coming long-baseline neutrino experiments. We then argue that if neutrino oscillation is observed with 0.02 < R < 0.87 it implies the rejection of the neutrino dark matter hypothesis. Our argument is valid if neutrinos come with only three flavors without steriles and if they have a hierarchical mass pattern.
We compare the physics potential of the upcoming neutrino oscillation experiments Daya Bay, Double Chooz, NOvA, RENO, and T2K based on their anticipated nominal luminosities and schedules. After discussing the sensitivity to theta_{13} and the leading atmospheric parameters, we demonstrate that leptonic CP violation will hardly be measurable without upgrades of the T2K and NOvA proton drivers, even if theta_{13} is large. In the presence of the proton drivers, the fast track to hints for CP violation requires communication between the T2K and NOvA collaborations in terms of a mutual synchroniz…
Motivated by the recent Super-Kamiokande results on atmospheric neutrinos, we incorporate massive neutrinos, with large angle oscillation between the second and third generations, in a scenario with R-parity violating supersymmetry. We emphasize the testability of such models through the observation of comparable numbers of muons and taus, produced together with the W-boson, in decays of the lightest neutralino. A distinctly measurable decay gap is another remarkable feature of such a scenario.
We investigate how the data from various future neutrino oscillation experiments will constrain the physics parameters for a three active neutrino mixing model. The investigations properly account for the degeneracies and ambiguities associated with the phenomenology as well as estimates of experimental measurement errors. Combinations of various reactor measurements with the expected J-PARC (T2K) and NuMI offaxis (Nova) data, both with and without the increased flux associated with proton driver upgrades, are considered. The studies show how combinations of reactor and offaxis data can resolv…
Matter effects may strongly enhance the Jarlskog factor J in T and CP-violating three-neutrino oscillation probabilities. However, we show that when J is enhanced, the same matter effects suppress the oscillating factors and increase the oscillation length. The net result is that there is no large enhancement in measurable probabilities for earth-bound experiments using neutrino parameters suggested by current experiments. We show that by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters, neutrino energy and travel length, the T-violating probability can be enhanced by matter effects over t…
The formulation of the alternative theory of neutrino oscillations is presented. Also the application of that theory to a system of neutrinos produced by a source is formulated and some basic formulae are derived.
Basics of neutrino oscillations is discussed. Importance of time-energy uncertainty relation is stressed. Neutrino oscillations in the leading approximation and evidence for neutrino oscillations are briefly summarized.
The history of neutrino mixing and oscillations is briefly presented. Basics of neutrino mixing and oscillations and convenient formalism of neutrino oscillations in vacuum is given. The role of neutrino in the Standard Model and the Weinberg mechanism of the generation of the Majorana neutrino masses are discussed.
It is shown that the processes of neutrino oscillations in a magnetic field can be consistently described in the framework of a new quantum field-theoretical approach without use of the neutrino flavor states. It is based on the Feynman diagram technique with a modified distance-dependent propagator, which takes into account the geometry of neutrino oscillation experiments. Processes of neutrino oscillations in a magnetic field, where the neutrinos are detected through the weak charged- and neutral-current interaction, have been studied and numerical calculations have been carried out for some…
We study the impact of the dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking induced by the auxiliary gauge fields of neutrino on the oscillations probability at DUNE. The DLSB introduces an alternative energy-momentum relation of the neutrinos and thus results in a new oscillation probability. We extend the previously proposed four-Majorana fermion model that gives rise to DLSB after the type II seesaw mechanism by considering the electron neutrino forward scattering when passing through a medium. Moreover, we incorporate the three-flavor neutrino states, which introduce the CP-violation term inside the os…
The scenario of baryogenesis through GeV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations is governed by non-linear differential equations for the time evolution of a sterile neutrino density matrix and Standard Model lepton and baryon asymmetries. By employing up-to-date rate coefficients and a non-perturbatively estimated Chern-Simons diffusion rate, we present a numerical solution of this system, incorporating the full momentum and helicity dependences of the density matrix. The density matrix deviates significantly from kinetic equilibrium, with the IR modes equilibrating much faster than the UV modes.…
Neutrino mixing and basics of neutrino oscillations are considered. Recent evidences in favour of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, are discussed. Neutrino oscillations in the solar and atmospheric ranges of $Δm^{2}$ are considered in the framework of the minimal scheme with the mixing of three massive neutrinos.
We have studied the prospects of measuring the CP violating phase with atmospheric neutrinos at a large magnetized iron calorimeter detector considering the muons (directly measurable) of the neutrino events generated by a MonteCarlo event generator Nuance. The effect of $θ_{13}$ and $δ_{CP}$ appears dominantly neither in atmospheric neutrino oscillation nor in solar neutrino oscillation, but appears as subleading in both cases. These are observable in range of $E \sim 1$ GeV for atmospheric neutrino, where solar and atmospheric oscillation couple. In this regime, the quasi-elastic events domi…
Neutrino oscillations appear to be a simple quantum mechanical phenomenon. However, a closer look at them reveals a number of subtle points and apparent paradoxes. Some of the basic issues of the theory of neutrino oscillations are still being debated. I discuss, from a historical perspective, how the role of quantum mechanical aspects of neutrino oscillations was realized in the course of the development of the theory of this phenomenon.
The major steps in the development of our knowledge about neutrinos are reviewed. The basics of neutrino oscillation formalism is presented. Neutrino oscillations in the framework of three-neutrino mixing are considered. The evidence for neutrino oscillations is discussed.
The basics of neutrino oscillations is presented. Existing evidences of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the atmospheric and solar neutrino experiments, are considered. The new CHOOZ bound on the element $|U_{e3}|^{2}$, obtained from the three-neutrino analysis of the data, is discussed. Decoupling of neutrino oscillations in the solar neutrino range of $Δm^{2}$ is considered.
The present work is devoted to the characterization of the Leggett-Garg inequality for three-flavoured neutrino oscillations in presence of both matter and Charge-Conjugation and Parity violating (CP) effects. This study complements and completes the recent one put forward in [17] by relaxing the stationary condition. At variance with the latter case, the LGI contains interference terms which cannot be expressed in terms of experimentally measurable quantities, thus drawing a clear-cut distinction between the two scenarios, as well as highlighting the role of the stationary assumption on such …
The simplest unified extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with bi-linear R-parity violation naturally predicts a hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum, suitable to explain atmospheric and solar neutrino fluxes. We study whether the individual violation of the lepton numbers L_{e,mu,tau} in the charged sector can lead to measurable rates for BR(mu->e gamma)and $BR(tau-> mu gamma). We find that some of the R-parity violating terms that are compatible with the observed atmospheric neutrino oscillations could lead to rates for mu->e gamma measurable in projected experiments. Howeve…
We investigate the extent to which leptonic CP-violation in (3+2) sterile neutrino models leads to different oscillation probabilities for $\barν_μ\to\barν_e$ and $ν_μ\toν_e$ oscillations at MiniBooNE. We are using a combined analysis of short-baseline (SBL) oscillation results, including the LSND and null SBL results, to which we impose additional constraints from atmospheric oscillation data. We obtain the favored regions in MiniBooNE oscillation probability space for both (3+2) CP-conserving and (3+2) CP-violating models. We further investigate the allowed CP-violation phase values and the …
Neutrino asymmetry generation from active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early Universe has different important cosmological effects. We discuss its basic features and present recent results on the borders of the generation for mixing angles $\sin^2 2θ_0\leq 10^{-7}$.
This review summarizes recent experimental and theoretical progress in determining neutrino mixing angles and masses through neutrino oscillations. We describe the basic physics of oscillation phenomena in vacuum and matter, as well as the status of solar, reactor, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrino experiments that probe these phenomena. The results from current global analyses of neutrino parameters are given. Future efforts that may improve the precision with which these parameters are known or probe new aspects of the neutrino mixing matrix are described.
The phenomena of particle mixing and flavor oscillations in elementary particle physics can be addressed by the point of view of quantum information theory, and described in terms of multi-mode entanglement of single-particle states. In this paper we show that such a description can be extended to the domain of quantum field theory, where we uncover a fine structure of quantum correlations associated with multi-mode, multi-particle entanglement. By means of an entanglement measure based on the linear entropies associated with all the possible bipartitions, we analyze the entanglement in the st…
In this short lecture, we discuss some basic phenomenological aspects of CP and T violation in neutrino oscillation. Using CP/T trajectory diagrams in the bi-probability space, we try to sketch out some essential features of the interplay between the effect of CP/T violating phase and that of the matter in neutrino oscillation.
Reasonably large relic neutrino asymmetries can be generated by active-sterile neutrino oscillations. After briefly discussing possible applications, I describe the Quantum Kinetic Equation formalism used to compute the asymmetry growth curves. I then show how the basic features of these curves can be understood on the basis of the adiabatic limit approximation in the collision dominated epoch, and the pure MSW effect at lower temperatures.
Measurements of atmospheric neutrinos by Super-Kamiokande an other detectors have given evidence for the existence of neutrino oscillations with large mixing and $Δm^2$ in the range 10^{-3}-10^{-2} eV^2. In this work we discuss critically some of the possible experimental strategies to confirm this result and determine more accurately the neutrino oscillation parameters. A possible method is the development of long-baseline accelerator neutrino beams. The accelerator beams can have higher intensity and higher average energy than the atmospheric flux, and if (ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ) oscillation…
The recent measurement of Delta_{sol} by the KamLAND experiment with very small errors, makes definitive predictions for the energy dependence of the solar neutrino survival probability P_{ee}. We fix Delta_{sol} to be the KamLAND best fit value of 8*10^{-5} eV^2 and study the energy dependence of P_{ee} for solar neutrinos in the framework of two flavour oscillations and also of three flavour oscillations. For the case of two flavour oscillations, P_{ee} has a measurable slope in the 5-8 MeV range but the solar spectrum measurements in this range find P_{ee} to be flat. The predicted values o…
We comment on the paper "On application of the time-energy uncertainty relation to Mössbauer neutrino experiments" (see arXiv: 0803.1424) in which our paper "Time-energy uncertainty relations for neutrino oscillation and Mössbauer neutrino experiment" (see arXiv: 0803.0527) has been criticized. We argue that this critique is a result of misinterpretation: The authors of (arXiv: 0803.1424) do not take into account (or do not accept) the fact that at present there exist different schemes of neutrino oscillations which can not be distinguished in usual neutrino oscillation experiments. We stress …
Despite the theory of neutrino oscillations being rather old, some of its basic issues are still being debated in the literature. We discuss, in the framework of the wave packet approach, a number of such issues, including the relevance of the "same energy" and "same momentum" assumptions, the role of quantum-mechanical uncertainty relations in neutrino oscillations, the dependence of the production/detection and propagation coherence conditions that ensure the observability of neutrino oscillations on neutrino energy and momentum uncertainties, the question of (in)dependence of the oscillatio…
In this lecture we review some of the basic properties of neutrinos, in particular their mass and the oscillation behavior. First we discuss how to describe the neutrino mass. Then, under the assumption that neutrinos are massive and mixed, the fundamentals of the neutrino oscillations are discussed with emphasis on subtle aspects which have been overlooked in the past. We then review the terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments in the framework of three generations of neutrinos with the standard mass hierarchy. Finally, a brief summary of the current status of the solar and atmospheric ne…
The original B. Pontecorvo idea of neutrino oscillations is discussed. Neutrino mixing and basics of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter are considered. Recent evidences in favour of neutrino oscillations, obtained in Super-Kamiokande, SNO, KamLAND and other neutrino experiments are discussed. Neutrino oscillations in the solar and atmospheric ranges of the neutrino mass-squared differences are considered in the framework of the minimal scheme with the mixing of three massive neutrinos. Results of the tritium beta-decay experiments and experiments on the search for neutrinoless doubl…
We consider the possibility that sterile neutrinos exist and admit a description as unparticles; we call these {\em unsterile} neutrinos. We then examine the nature of neutrino oscillations in a model where an unsterile can mix with two active flavors with a very simple mass matrix of the see-saw type. Despite these simplifications, we find a number of remarkable features, all of which will occur generically when more realistic cases are considered. These include momentum dependent mixing angles, "invisible" decay widths for the unsterile-like mode, as well as the inheritance of a non-vanishin…
The impulse-approximation expression used hitherto to define the pion's valence-quark distribution function is flawed because it omits contributions from the gluons which bind quarks into the pion. A corrected leading-order expression produces the model-independent result that quarks dressed via the rainbow-ladder truncation, or any practical analogue, carry all the pion's light-front momentum at a characteristic hadronic scale. Corrections to the leading contribution may be divided into two classes, responsible for shifting dressed-quark momentum into glue and sea-quarks. Working with availab…
The recent wide recognition of the existence of neutrino oscillations concludes the pioneer stage of these studies and poses the problem of how to communicate effectively the basic aspects of this branch of science. In fact, the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations has peculiar features and requires to master some specific idea and some amount of formalism. The main aim of these introductory notes is exactly to cover these aspects, in order to allow the interested students to appreciate the modern developments and possibly to begin to do research in neutrino oscillations.
We investigate collective flavor oscillations of supernova neutrinos at late stages of the explosion. We first show that the frequently used single-angle (averaged coupling) approximation predicts oscillations close to, or perhaps even inside, the neutrinosphere, potentially invalidating the basic neutrino transport paradigm. Fortunately, we also find that the single-angle approximation breaks down in this regime; in the full multiangle calculation, the oscillations start safely outside the transport region. The new suppression effect is traced to the interplay between the dispersion in the ne…
After a summary of the basic three neutrino oscillation formalism we review briefly our present empirical knowledge of the oscillation parameters and conclude that the 2-neutrinos model is adequate to describe the survival probability of the electronic neutrino P(nue->nue). Then we proceed to the evaluation of P(nue->nue) relative to the antineutrinos emitted by the nuclear power stations presently in operation along the the Rhone valley. We assume that a detector has been installed in a existing cavity located under the Mont Ventoux at a depth equivalent to 1500 m of water. We show that such …
We use action-angle variables to describe the basic physics of coherent scalar field oscillations in the expanding universe. These analytical mechanics methods have some advantages, like the identification of adiabatic invariants. As an application, we show some instances of potentials leading to equations of state with $p<-ρ/3$, thus contributing to the dark energy that causes the observed acceleration of the universe.
The recent measurement of a non-zero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ requires a modification of the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern that predicts a zero value for it. We propose a new neutrino mixing pattern based on a spontaneously-broken $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry and a type-I seesaw mechanism. Our model allows for approximate tri-bimaximal mixing and non-zero $θ_{13}$, and contains a natural way to implement low and high energy CP violation in neutrino oscillations, and leptogenesis with a renormalizable Lagrangian. Both normal and inverted mass hierarchies are permitted within $3σ$ experimental b…
We discuss how the cosmological baryon asymmetry can be achieved by the lepton family asymmetries of heavy Majorana neutrino decays and they are related to CP violation in neutrino oscillation, in the minimal seesaw model with two heavy Majorana neutrinos. We derive the most general formula for CP violation in neutrino oscillation in terms of the heavy Majorana masses and Yukawa mass term. It is shown that the formula is very useful to classify several models in which $e-$, $μ-$ and $τ-$leptogenesis can be separately realized and to see how they are connected with low energy CP violaton. To ma…
A short review of the status of neutrino mixing and neutrino oscillations is given. The basics of neutrino mixing and oscillations is discussed. The latest evidences of neutrino oscillations obtained in the Super-Kamiokande and the SNO solar neutrino experiments and in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment are considered. The results of solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments are discussed from the point of view of the three-neutrino mixing.
In the article {\it Gen. Rel. Grav.} {\bf 32}, 1633 (2000), by J. G. Pereira and C. M. Zhang, the special relativity energy-momentum tensor was used to discuss the neutrino phase-splitting in a weak gravitational field. However, it would be more appropriate to use the general relativity energy-momentum tensor. When we do that, as we are going to see, some results change, but the basic conclusion remains the same.
