Effective Field Theories offer a consistent bottom-up approach to parametrise small deviations from Standard Model predictions. In this work we report on the application of the Effective Field Theory to shed light on effects from high-scale physics beyond the Standard Model on the Higgs transverse-momentum spectrum. The Standard Model prediction for the transverse-momentum distribution in Higgs boson production through gluon fusion is augmented by three new dimension-six operators, implying the modification of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and the inclusion of a point-like Higgs-gluon coupling. We present resummed transverse-momentum spectra including these operators at NLO+NLL accuracy and study their effects on the shape of the distribution. The proper parametrization of such effects becomes increasingly important for experimental analyses in Run II of the LHC.

We consider an effective field theory framework with three standard model (SM) gauge singlet right handed neutrinos, and an additional SM gauge singlet scalar field. The framework successfully generates eV masses of the light neutrinos via seesaw mechanism, and accommodates a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) as dark matter candidate. Two of the gauge singlet neutrinos participate in neutrino mass generation, while the third gauge singlet neutrino is a FIMP dark matter. We explore the correlation between the $\textit{vev}$ of the gauge singlet scalar field which translates as mass of …
We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of a Higgs boson produced through gluon fusion in hadron collisions. At small transverse momenta, the large logarithmic terms are resummed up to next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. The resummed computation is consistently matched to the next-to-leading-order (NLO) result valid at large transverse momenta. The ensuing Standard Model prediction is supplemented by possible new-physics effects parametrised through three dimension-six operators related to the modification of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and to the inclusion of a point…
In this conference paper I present the first full global fit of a dark matter effective field theory with the global fitting framework GAMBIT. I show the results of exhaustive parameter space explorations of the effective dark matter model, including a general set of operators up to dimension 7, and using the most up-to-date constraints from direct and indirect detection of dark matter, relic abundance requirements and collider searches for dark matter candidates.
Effective Field Theories (EFTs) capture effects from heavy dynamics at low energy and represent an essential ingredient in the context of Standard Model (SM) precision tests. This document gathers a number of relevant scenarios for heavy physics beyond the SM and presents explicit expressions for the Wilson coefficients in their low-energy EFT. It includes i) weakly coupled scenarios in which one or a few particles of different spins and quantum numbers interact linearly with the SM and generate EFT effects at tree-level, ii) scenarios where heavy particles interact quadratically whereupon the…
Recognizing the potential of effective field theories to posit multiple BSM scenarios in similar footing, with a possibility to compare them, we inspect the effects of 11 single scalar-multiplet extensions of the SM on the combined set of electroweak precision observables and Higgs signal strength data, by systematically integrating out the heavy multiplets and computing the resulting SMEFT operators and Wilson coefficients (WCs) up to one-loop level. Noting that multiple BSM models give rise to a degenerate set of WCs, we then perform Bayesian statistical inference both directly on the BSM pa…
It is possible that measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) at the LHC will reveal disagreement with Standard Model predictions, but no new particles will be observed directly. The task is then to learn as much as possible about the new physics from a VBS analysis carried within the framework of the Effective Field Theory (EFT). In this paper we discuss issues related to the correct usage of the EFT when the WW invariant mass is not directly accessible experimentally, as in purely leptonic W decay channels. The strategies for future data analyses in case such scenario indeed occurs are p…
I give a short overview on di-Higgs productions in models that extend the Standard Model of particle physics by additional fields and particle content, including EFT prescriptions.
The gauge singlet right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) are essential fields in several neutrino mass models that explain the observed eV scale neutrino mass. We assume RHN field to be present in the vicinity of the electroweak scale and all the other possible beyond the standard model (BSM) fields arise at high energy scale $\geΛ$. In this scenario, the BSM physics can be described using effective field theory (EFT) where the set of canonical degrees of freedoms consists of both RHN and SM fields. EFT of this kind is usually dubbed as $N_{R}$-EFT. We systematically construct relevant operators that c…
In this work we study the production of two Higgs bosons at the two planned electron positron colliders with energies at the TeV domain, CLIC and ILC, within the context of Effective Field Theories (EFTs) to describe beyond the Standard Model Higgs Physics. We focus first on the case of the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) and next we compare with the case of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The predictions for double Higgs production in both EFTs are first presented for the most relevant subprocess participating in the total process of our interest, $e^+e^- \to HH ν\bar ν…
Effective field theories (EFT) are commonly used to parameterize effects of BSM physics in vector boson scattering (VBS). For Wilson coefficients which are large enough to produce presently observable effects, the validity range of the EFT represents only a fraction of the energy range covered by the LHC, however. In order to shed light on possible extrapolations into the high energy region, a class of UV-complete toy models, with extra SU(2) multiplets of scalars or of fermions with vector-like weak couplings, is considered. By calculating the Wilson coefficients up to energy-dimension eight,…
It is not only conceivable but likely that the spectrum of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) is non-degenerate. The lightest non-SM particle may reside close enough to the electroweak scale that it can be kinematically probed at high-energy experiments and on account of this, it must be included as an infrared (IR) degree of freedom (DOF) along with the SM ones. The rest of the non-SM particles are heavy enough to be directly experimentally inaccessible and can be integrated out. Now, to capture the effects of the complete theory, one must take into account the higher dimensional operator…
In recent times, SMEFT, along with a superlative repertoire of theoretical and computational tools, has emerged as an efficacious platform to test the viability of proposed BSM scenarios. With symmetry as the backbone, higher mass dimensional ($\geq 5$) SMEFT operators constitute the \textit{lingua franca} for studying and comparing the direct or indirect effects of UV models on low energy observables. The steady increase in the accessible energy scales for contemporary particle collision experiments prompts us to inspect effective operators beyond the leading order and investigate their measu…
One of the assumptions of simplified models is that there are a few new particles and interactions accessible at the LHC and all other new particles are heavy and decoupled. The effective field theory (EFT) method provides a consistent method to test this assumption. Simplified models can be augmented with higher order operators involving the new particles accessible at the LHC. Any UV completion of the simplified model will be able to match onto these beyond the Standard Model EFTs (BSM-EFT). In this paper we study the simplest simplified model: the Standard Model extended by a real gauge sin…
We use an effective field theory (EFT) which includes all possible gluon-Higgs dimension-5 and dimension-7 operators to study Higgs boson plus jet production in next-to-leading order QCD. The EFT sheds light on the effect of a finite top quark mass as well as any Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) modifications of Higgs-gluon effective couplings. In the gluon channel, the accuracy of the heavy-top approximation for differential distributions arises from the non-interference between the helicity amplitudes of the G^3 h and G^2 h operators in the m_h < p_T limit at lowest order. One dimension-7 ope…
Experiments in particle physics have hitherto failed to produce any significant evidence for the many explicit models of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) that had been proposed over the past decades. As a result, physicists have increasingly turned to model-independent strategies as tools in searching for a wide range of possible BSM effects. In this paper, we describe the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM-EFT) and analyse it in the context of the philosophical discussions about models, theories, and (bottom-up) effective field theories. We find that while the SM-EFT is a quantu…
The study of the anomalous non-resonant $HH$ production is presented from the point of view of effective field theory (EFT) parameterization. The searches for $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow γγWW$, $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow γγbb$ and $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow bbbb$ processes by ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reproduced. The selection efficiencies and exclusion limits on the $HH$ production cross sections for different Beyond Standard Model (BSM) EFT benchmark models are obtained using the fast Monte-Carlo simulation of the ATLAS detector.
The assumption that the Standard Model is an Effective Field Theory (SM EFT) of a more fundamental theory at a higher, than electroweak, energy scale, implies a growth of cross-sections for electroweak Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) processes signalling the appearance of a resonance (or resonances) nearby that scale. In this article, we investigate in detail SM EFT effects from dimension-6 operators in VBS with like-sign-$W$ production in fully leptonic decay modes at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). We find that these effects are important for a handful of operators, most notably for the oper…
Effective field theory (EFT) approaches are widely used at the LHC, such that it is important to study their validity, and ease of matching to specific new physics models. In this paper, we consider an extension of the SM in which a top quark couples to a new heavy scalar. We find the dimension six operators generated by this theory at low energy, and match the EFT to the full theory up to NLO precision in the simplified model coupling. We then examine the range of validity of the EFT description in top pair production, finding excellent validity even if the scalar mass is only slightly above …
The impact of the three-loop effects of order $α_tα_s^2$ on the mass of the light CP-even Higgs boson in the MSSM is studied in a pure $\overline{\text{DR}}$ context. For this purpose, we implement the results of Kant et al. into the C++ module Himalaya and link it to FlexibleSUSY, a Mathematica and C++ package to create spectrum generators for BSM models. The three-loop result is compared to the fixed-order two-loop calculations of the original FlexibleSUSY and of FeynHiggs, as well as to the result based on an EFT approach. Aside from the expected reduction of the renormalization scale depen…
Additional Higgs bosons appear in many extensions of the Standard Model (SM). While most existing searches for additional Higgs bosons concentrate on final states consisting of SM particles, final states containing beyond the SM (BSM) particles play an important role in many BSM models. In order to facilitate future searches for such final states, we develop a simplified model framework for heavy Higgs boson decays to a massive SM boson as well as one or more invisible particles. Allowing one kind of BSM mediator in each decay chain, we classify the possible decay topologies for each final sta…
We utilize the technology of open quantum systems in conjunction with the recently developed effective field theory for forward scattering to address the question of massless jet propagation through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium. We discuss various possible hierarchies of scales that may appear in this problem, by comparing thermal scales of the plasma with relevant scales in the effective field theory. Starting from the Lindblad equation, we derive and solve a master equation for the transverse momentum distribution of a massless quark jet, at leading orders both …
In this work we apply effective field theory (EFT) to observables in quarkonium production and decay that are sensitive to soft gluon radiation, in particular measurements that are sensitive to small transverse momentum. Within the EFT framework we study $χ_Q$ decay to light quarks followed by the fragmentation of those quarks to light hadrons. We derive a factorization theorem that involves transverse momentum distribution (TMD) fragmentation functions and new quarkonium TMD shape functions. We derive renormalization group equations, both in rapidity and virtuality, which are used to evolve t…
As there seems to be a large mass gap between the SM and new physics particles, the EFT framework emerges as the natural approach for the analysis and interpretation of collider data. However, this large gap and the fact that (so far) all the measured interactions look pretty much SM-like does not imply that the linear Higgs representation as a complex doublet $ϕ$ in the SMEFT is always appropriate. Although there is a wide class of SM extensions that accept this linear description, this realization does not always provide a good perturbative expansion. The HEFT and its organization according …
Radiative corrections to gauge boson and Higgs production computed recently using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) require the one-loop high-scale matching coefficients in the standard model. We give explicit expressions for the matching coefficients for the effective field theory (EFT) operators for q qbar -> VV and q qbar -> phi^+ phi for a general gauge theory with an arbitrary number of gauge groups. The group theory factors are given explicitly for the standard model, including both QCD and electroweak corrections.
Effective Field Theories are an established framework to bridge the gap between UV and low energy theories. In the context of the Standard Model, the bottom-up approach extends its operator set and thus equips us to astutely probe its observables while encapsulating indirect evidence of unknown high scale theories. While the top-down approach, on the other hand, employs functional techniques to integrate out the heavy fields from a BSM Lagrangian leading to a set of SMEFT operators. An intricate interplay of the two approaches enhances the efficacy of the SMEFT in making meaningful predictions…
Effective Field Theory technique is one of the most elegant ways to capture the impact of high scale theory, if any, at some low energy by incorporating higher mass dimensional ($\geq 5$) effective operators ($\mathcal{O}_i$). The low energy EFT is described in terms of only light degrees of freedom which can appear on-shell. An essential task while developing the EFT framework is to compute these $\mathcal{O}_i$'s. Hilbert Series is a novel and mathematically robust method to construct the complete set of gauge invariant independent, effective operators. The HS requires the knowledge of the t…
Transverse densities describe the spatial distribution of electromagnetic current in the nucleon at fixed light-front time. At peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}) the densities are governed by chiral dynamics and can be calculated model-independently using chiral effective field theory (EFT). Recent work has shown that the EFT results can be represented in first-quantized form, as overlap integrals of chiral light-front wave functions describing the transition of the nucleon to soft-pion-nucleon intermediate states, resulting in a quantum-mechanical picture of the peripheral transverse densi…
The Higgs + jet channel at the LHC is sensitive to the effects of new physics both in the total rate and in the transverse momentum distribution at high p_T. We examine the production process using an effective field theory (EFT) language and discuss the possibility of determining the nature of the underlying high scale physics from boosted Higgs production. The effects of heavy color triplet scalars and top partner fermions with TeV scale masses are considered as examples and Higgs-gluon couplings of dimension-5 and dimension-7 are included in the EFT. As a by-product of our study, we examine…
We consider scalar extensions of the SM and their effective field theoretic generalisations to illustrate the phenomenological connection between precision measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$, precision Higgs measurements, and direct collider sensitivity. To this end, we consider charged BSM scalar sectors of the Zee-Babu type for which we develop a consistent, and complete dimensions-5 and -6 effective field theory extension. This enables us to track generic new physics effects that interact with the SM predominantly via radiative interactions. While the operator s…
We present the transverse momentum spectrum for a heavy hadron at threshold in a groomed jet initiated by a heavy quark. The cross section is doubly differential in the energy fraction of an identified heavy hadron in the jet and its transverse momentum measured with respect to the groomed (recoil free) jet axis. The grooming is implemented using a soft-drop grooming algorithm and helps us in mitigating the effects of Non-Global logarithms and pile up. For the particular case of a $B$ meson, we identify two distinct regimes of the transverse momentum spectrum and develop an EFT within the form…
The study of Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum is one of the new frontiers for the LHC Higgs physics programme. This paper considers boosted Higgs production in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We focus on the gluon fusion and $t{\bar t}H$ production processes and study the effects of three dimension-6 operators: the top Yukawa operator, the gluon-Higgs effective coupling and the chromomagnetic dipole operator of the top quark. We perform a detailed study of the sensitivity of current and future LHC data to the corresponding Wilson coefficients, consistently…
Di-lepton searches for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Z' bosons that rely on the analysis of the Breit-Wigner (BW) line shape are appropriate in the case of narrow resonances, but likely not sufficient in scenarios featuring Z' states with large widths. Conversely, alternative experimental strategies applicable to wide Z' resonances are much more dependent than the default bump search analyses on the modelling of QCD higher-order corrections to the production processes, for both signal and background. For heavy Z' boson searches in the di-lepton channel at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC)…
If physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) explains the $4.2σ$ difference between the Standard-Model and measured muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ$, minimal flavor violation predicts a shift in the analog quantity for the $τ$ lepton, $a_τ$, at the $10^{-6}$ level, and even larger effects are possible in generic BSM scenarios such as leptoquarks. We show that this produces equivalent BSM deviations in the Pauli form factor, $F_2(s)$, at $s=(10\,\text{GeV})^2$, and report the first complete two-loop prediction of $\text{Re}\, F_2^\text{eff}(100\,\text{GeV}^2)=-268.77(50)\times 10^{-6}$ for r…
We recognise the appearance of a Focus Point (FP) in the transverse momentum distribution of either leptons originating from a BSM $Z^\prime$-boson decay, after a simple normalisation procedure. Exploring the properties of the FP we will be able to define in a general way a new observable, the Focus Point Asymmetry ($A_{\rm FP}$), which can be used to set constrains on the $Z^\prime$ width. We discuss the potential and the sensitivity of the $A_{\rm FP}$ in as diagnostic tool for $Z^\prime$ physics, considering various $Z^\prime$ phenomenological realisations.
Gauge invariance dictates that a resonance produced from initial state gluons must be produced through a non-renormalizable operator or a loop process. Should such a resonance be discovered, uncovering the dynamics that give rise to its couplings to gluons will be crucial to understanding the nature of the new state. Here we study how the production of this resonance at high transverse momentum in association with one (or more) jets can be used to directly measure the scale of the operator or the mass of the particles in the loop. We use a 750 GeV diphoton resonance as an example application, …
Background: The transverse densities $ρ_{1, 2}(b)$ describe the distributions of electric charge and magnetic moment at fixed light-front time and connect the nucleon's elastic form factors with its partonic structure. The dispersive representation of the form factors $F_{1, 2}(t)$ expresses the densities in terms of exchanges of hadronic states in the $t$-channel and permits their analysis using hadronic physics methods. Purpose: Compute the densities at peripheral distances $b = \mathcal{O}(M_π^{-1})$, where they are generated predominantly by the two-pion states in the dispersive representa…
This report presents the results of the Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup of the Off-Shell Interpretations Task Force in the LHC Higgs Working Group. The main goal of the subgroup was to discuss and advance the potential impact of off-shell Higgs measurements on searches for BSM physics carried out in the EFT framework or as benchmark model studies. In the first contribution, the off-shell potential to resolve flat directions in parameter space for on-shell measurements is studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of off-shell measurements to SMEFT dimension-6 operators for the gg $\to$…
We study the low-energy quantum electrodynamics of electrons and holes, in a thin graphene wire. We develop an effective field theory (EFT) based on an expansion in p/p_T, where p_T is the typical momentum of electrons and holes in the transverse direction, while p are the momenta in the longitudinal direction. We show that, to the lowest-order in (p/p_T), our EFT theory is formally equivalent to the exactly solvable Schwinger model. By exploiting such an analogy, we find that the ground state of the quantum wire contains a condensate of electron-hole pairs. The excitation spectrum is saturate…
We present our studies of the forward unpolarised doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the deuteron and the closely related two-photon-exchange ($2γ$-exchange) corrections to the Lamb shift of muonic deuterium. The deuteron VVCS amplitude is calculated in the framework of pionless effective field theory, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) for the longitudinal and next-to-leading order (NLO) for the transverse amplitude. The charge elastic form factor of the deuteron, obtained from the residue of the longitudinal VVCS amplitude, is used to extract the value of the single…
