We give a solution to the inverse problem (given a function, find a corresponding group) for large classes of speed, entropy, isoperimetric profile, return probability and $L_p$-compression functions of finitely generated groups of exponential volume growth. For smaller classes, we give solutions among solvable groups. As corollaries, we prove a recent conjecture of Amir on joint evaluation of speed and entropy exponents and we obtain a new proof of the existence of uncountably many pairwise non-quasi-isometric solvable groups, originally due to Cornulier and Tessera. We also obtain a formula relating the $L_p$-compression exponent of a group and its wreath product with the cyclic group for $p$ in $[1,2]$.
In this paper we provide a framework for the study of isoperimetric problems in finitely generated group, through a combinatorial study of universal covers of compact simplicial complexes. We show that, when estimating filling functions, one can restrict to simplicial spheres of particular shapes, called "round" and "unfolded", provided that a bounded quasi-geodesic combing exists. We prove that the problem of estimating higher dimensional divergence as well can be restricted to round spheres. Applications of these results include a combinatorial analogy of the Federer--Fleming inequality for …
We characterize the asymptotic behaviour of the compression associated to a uniform embedding into some Lp-space for a large class of groups including connected Lie groups with exponential growth and word-hyperbolic finitely generated groups. In particular, the Hilbert compression rate of these groups is equal to 1. This also provides new and optimal estimates for the compression of a uniform embedding of the infinite 3-regular tree into some Lp-space. The main part of the paper is devoted to the explicit construction of affine isometric actions of amenable Lie groups on Lp-spaces whose compre…
We prove existence of the large deviation principle, with a proper convex rate function, for the distribution of the renormalized distance from the origin of a random walk on a free product of finitely generated groups. As a consequence, we derive the same principle for nearest-neighbour random walks on regular trees.
In this note, we generalise a Bourgain's construction of finitely-supported symmetric measures whose Furstenberg measure has a smooth density from the case of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ to that of a general simple Lie group. The proof is the same as Bourgain's, except that the use of Fourier series is replaced by harmonic analysis on a maximal compact subgroup.
Initial steps are presented towards understanding which finitely generated groups are almost surely generated as semigroups by the path of a random walk on the group.
We show that for each $λ\in [\frac{1}{2}, 1]$, there exists a solvable group and a finitely supported measure such that the associated random walk has upper speed exponent $λ$.
For every $3/4\le δ, β< 1$ satisfying $δ\leq β< \frac{1+δ}{2}$ we construct a finitely generated group $Γ$ and a (symmetric, finitely supported) random walk $X_n$ on $Γ$ so that its expected distance from its starting point satisfies $E|X_n|\asymp n^β$ and its entropy satisfies $H(X_n)\asymp n^δ$. In fact, the speed and entropy can be set precisely to equal any two nice enough prescribed functions $f,h$ up to a constant factor as long as the functions satisfy the relation $n^{\frac{3}{4}}\leq h(n)\leq f(n)\leq \sqrt{{nh(n)}/{\log (n+1)}}\leq n^γ$ for some $γ<1$.
We answer an open question of Grigorchuk and Zuk about amenability using random walks. Our results separate the class of amenable groups from the closure of subexponentially growing groups under the operations of group extension and direct limits; these classes are separated even within the realm of finitely presented groups.
Let $G$ be a Cayley graph of a nonamenable group with spectral radius $ρ< 1$. It is known that branching random walk on $G$ with offspring distribution $μ$ is transient, i.e., visits the origin at most finitely often almost surely, if and only if the expected number of offspring $\bar μ$ satisfies $\bar μ\leq ρ^{-1}$. Benjamini and Müller (2010) conjectured that throughout the transient supercritical phase $1<\barμ \leq ρ^{-1}$, and in particular at the recurrence threshold $\bar μ= ρ^{-1}$, the trace of the branching random walk is tree-like in the sense that it is infinitely-ended almost sur…
We introduce the discrete affine group of a regular tree as a finitely generated subgroup of the affine group. We describe the Poisson boundary of random walks on it as a space of configurations. We compute isoperimetric profile and Hilbert compression exponent of the group. We also discuss metric relationship with some lamplighter groups and lamplighter graphs.
For every 3/4 <= beta < 1 we construct a finitely generated group so that the expected distance of the simple random walk from its starting point is within a constant factor of n^beta. In fact, the speed can be set precisely to equal any nice prescribed function up to a constant factor.
A variety of behaviors of entropy functions of random walks on finitely generated groups is presented, showing that for any $\frac{1}{2}\leq α\leqβ\leq1$, there is a group $Γ$ with measure $μ$ equidistributed on a finite generating set such that \[\liminf\frac{\log H_{Γ,μ}(n)}{\log n}=α,\qquad \limsup \frac{\log H_{Γ,μ}(n)}{\log n}=β.\] The groups involved are finitely generated subgroups of the group of automorphisms of an extended rooted tree. The return probability and the drift of a simple random walk $Y_n$ on such groups are also evaluated, providing an example of group with return probab…
We use subgroup distortion to determine the rate of escape of a simple random walk on a class of polycyclic groups, and we show that the rate of escape is invariant under changes of generating set for these groups. For metabelian groups, we define a stronger form of subgroup distortion, which applies to non-finitely generated subgroups. Under this hypothesis, we compute the rate of escape for certain random walks on metabelian groups via a comparison to the toppling of a dissipative abelian sandpile.
We establish a dimension formula for the harmonic measure of a finitely supported and symmetric random walk on a hyperbolic group. We also characterize random walks for which this dimension is maximal. Our approach is based on the Green metric, a metric which provides a geometric point of view on random walks and, in particular, which allows us to interpret harmonic measures as \qc measures on the boundary of the group.
We are interested in the Guivarc'h inequality for admissible random walks on finitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups, endowed with a word metric. We show that for random walks with finite super-exponential moment, if this inequality is an equality, then the Green distance is roughly similar to the word distance, generalizing results of Blach{è}re, Ha{ï}ssinsky and Mathieu for hyperbolic groups [4]. Our main application is for relatively hyperbolic groups with respect to virtually abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. We show that for such groups, the Guivarc'h inequality with respect t…
We consider random walks on finitely or countably generated free semigroups, and identify their Poisson boundaries for classes of measures which fail to meet the classical entropy criteria. In particular, we introduce the notion of w-logarithmic moment, and we show that if a random walk on a free semigroup has either finite entropy or finite w-logarithmic moment for some word w, then the space of infinite words with the resulting hitting measure is the Poisson boundary.
The harmonic measure $ν$ on the boundary of the group $Sol$ associated to a discrete random walk of law $μ$ was described by Kaimanovich. We investigate when it is absolutely continuous or singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. By ratio entropy over speed, we show that any countable non-abelian subgroup admits a finite first moment non-degenerate $μ$ with singular harmonic measure $ν$. On the other hand, we prove that some random walks with finitely supported step distribution admit a regular harmonic measure. Finally, we construct some exceptional random walks with arbitrarily small speed…
Let T be the homogeneous tree with degree and G a finitely generated group whose Cayley graph is T. The associated lamplighter group is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order r with G. For a large class of random walks on this group, we prove almost sure convergence to a natural geometric boundary. If the probability law governing the random walk has finite first moment, then the probability space formed by this geometric boundary together with the limit distribution of the random walk is proved to be maximal, that is, the Poisson boundary. We also prove that the Dirichlet problem at …
We give a complete description of the absolute of commutative finitely generated groups and semigroups. The absolute (previously called the exit boundary) is a further elaboration of the notion of the boundary of a random walk on a group (the Poisson--Furstenberg boundary); namely, the absolute of a (semi)group is the set of ergodic central measures on the compactum of all infinite trajectories of a simple random walk on the group. Related notions have been discussed in the probability literature: Martin boundary, entrance and exit boundaries (Dynkin), central measures on path spaces of graphs…
We study symmetric random walks on finitely generated groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. We establish an oscillation property for the induced Markov chain on the line that implies a weak form of recurrence. Except for a few special cases, which can be treated separately, we prove a property of "global stability at a finite distance": roughly speaking, there exists a compact interval such that any two trajectories get closer and closer whenever one of them returns to the compact interval. The probabilistic techniques employed here lead to interesting results for t…
We show that on an arbitrary finitely generated non virtually solvable linear group, any two independent random walks will eventually generate a free subgroup. In fact, this will hold for an exponential number of independent random walks.
We consider a transitive action of a finitely generated group $G$ and the Schreier graph $Γ$ defined by this action for some fixed generating set. For a probability measure $μ$ on $G$ with a finite first moment we show that if the induced random walk is transient, it converges towards the space of ends of $Γ$. As a corollary we obtain that for a probability measure with a finite first moment on Thompson's group $F$, the support of which generates $F$ as a semigroup, the induced random walk on the dyadic numbers has a non-trivial Poisson boundary. Some assumption on the moment of the measure is…
We give a proof of the sublinear tracking property for sample paths of random walks on various groups acting on spaces with hyperbolic-like properties. As an application, we prove sublinear tracking in Teichmueller distance for random walks on mapping class groups, and on Cayley graphs of a large class of finitely generated groups.
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group equipped with a finite symmetric generating set and the associated word length function $|\cdot |$. We study the behavior of the probability of return for random walks driven by symmetric measures $μ$ that are such that $\sum ρ(|x|)μ(x)<\infty$ for increasing regularly varying or slowly varying functions $ρ$, for instance, $s\mapsto (1+s)^α$, $α\in (0,2]$, or $s\mapsto (1+\log (1+s))^ε$, $ε>0$. For this purpose we develop new relations between the isoperimetric profiles associated with different symmetric probability measures. These techniques allow us to …
We study fine structure related to finitely supported random walks on infinite finitely generated discrete groups, largely motivated by dimension group techniques. The unfaithful extreme harmonic functions (defined only on proper space-time cones), aka unfaithful pure traces, can be represented on systems of finite support, avoiding dead ends. This motivates properties of the random walk (WC) and of the group (SWC) which become of interest in their own right. While all abelian groups satisfy WC, the do not satisfy SWC; however some abelian by finite groups do satisfy the latter, and we charact…
We study asymptotic properties of the Green metric associated with transient random walks on countable groups. We prove that the rate of escape of the random walk computed in the Green metric equals its asymptotic entropy. The proof relies on integral representations of both quantities with the extended Martin kernel. In the case of finitely generated groups, where this result is known (Benjamini and Peres [Probab. Theory Related Fields 98 (1994) 91--112]), we give an alternative proof relying on a version of the so-called fundamental inequality (relating the rate of escape, the entropy and th…
For finitely supported random walks on finitely generated groups $G$ we prove that the identity map on $G$ extends to a continuous equivariant surjection from the Martin boundary to the Floyd boundary, with preimages of conical points being singletons. This yields new results for relatively hyperbolic groups. Our key estimate relates the Green and Floyd metrics, generalizing results of Ancona for random walks on hyperbolic groups and of Karlsson for quasigeodesics. We then apply these techniques to obtain some results concerning the harmonic measure on the limit sets of geometrically finite is…
We give a precise definition of ``generic-case complexity'' and show that for a very large class of finitely generated groups the classical decision problems of group theory - the word, conjugacy and membership problems - all have linear-time generic-case complexity. We prove such theorems by using the theory of random walks on regular graphs.
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green's function of the corresponding random walk. We give a complete topological characterization of the Martin boundary of finitely supported random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. In particular, in the case of nonuniform lattices in the real hyperbolic space H n , we show that the Martin boundary coincides with the CAT (0) boundary of the truncated space, and thus when n = 3, is homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet.
The article continues the series of papers on the absolute of finitely generated groups. The absolute of a group with a fixed system of generators is defined as the set of ergodic Markov measures for which the system of cotransition probabilities is the same as for the simple (right) random walk generated by the uniform distribution on the generators. The absolute is a new boundary of a group, generated by random walks on the group. We divide the absolute into the Laplacian part and degenerate part and describe the connection between the absolute, homogeneous Markov processes, and the Laplace …
Let $Γ$ be a non-elementary relatively hyperbolic group with a finite generating set. Consider a finitely supported admissible and symmetric probability measure $μ$ on $Γ$ and a probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb{N}$ with mean $r$. Let $\mathrm{BRW}(Γ,ν,μ)$ be the branching random walk on $Γ$ with offspring distribution $ν$ and base motion given by the random walk with step distribution $μ$. It is known that for $1 < r \leq R$ with $R$ the radius of convergence for the Green function of the random walk, the population of $\mathrm{BRW}(Γ,ν,μ)$ survives forever, but eventually vacates every fin…
Suppose we are given finitely generated groups $Γ_1,...,Γ_m$ equipped with irreducible random walks. Thereby we assume that the expansions of the corresponding Green functions at their radii of convergence contain only logarithmic or algebraic terms as singular terms up to sufficiently large order (except for some degenerate cases). We consider transient random walks on the free product {$Γ_1 \ast ... \astΓ_m$} and give a complete classification of the possible asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding $n$-step return probabilities. They either inherit a law of the form $\varrho^{nδ} n^{-λ_i} …
We show that the probability that a finitely supported random walk on a non-elementary subgroup of the the mapping class group gives a non-pseudo-Anosov element decays exponentially in the length of the random walk. More generally, we show that if R is a set of mapping class group elements with an upper bound on their translation lengths on the complex of curves, then the probability that a random walk lies in R decays exponentially in the length of the random walk.
We begin by giving a new proof of the equivalence between the Liouville property and vanishing of the drift for symmetric random walks with finite first moments on finitely generated groups; a result which was first established by Kaimanovich-Vershik and Karlsson-Ledrappier. We then proceed to prove that the product of the Poisson boundary of any countable measured group $(G,μ)$ with any ergodic $(G,\checkμ)$-space is still ergodic, which in particular yields a new proof of weak mixing for the double Poisson boundary of $(G,μ)$ when $μ$ is symmetric. Finally, we characterize the failure of wea…
For $G$ a finitely generated group and $g \in G$, we say $g$ is detected by a normal subgroup $N \lhd G$ if $g \notin N$. The depth $D_G(g)$ of $g$ is the lowest index of a normal, finite index subgroup $N$ that detects $g$. In this paper we study the expected depth, $\mathbb E[D_G(X_n)]$, where $X_n$ is a random walk on $G$. We give several criteria that imply that $$\mathbb E[D_G(X_n)] \xrightarrow[n\to \infty]{} 2 + \sum_{k \geq 2}\frac{1}{[G:Λ_k]}\, ,$$ where $Λ_k$ is the intersection of all normal subgroups of index at most $k$. In particular, the equality holds in the class of all nilpot…
We introduce two natural notions of cogrowth for finitely generated semigroups --- one local and one global --- and study their relationship with amenability and random walks. We establish the minimal and maximal possible values for cogrowth rates, and show that non-monogenic free semigroups are exactly characterised by minimal global cogrowth. We consider the relationship with cogrowth for groups and with amenability of semigroups. We also study the relationship with random walks on finitely generated semigroups, and in particular the spectral radius of the associated Markov operators (when d…
We study the isoperimetric profiles of certain families of finitely generated groups defined via marked Schreier graphs and permutation wreath products. The groups we study are among the "simplest" examples within a much larger class of groups, all defined via marked Schreier graphs and/or action on rooted trees, which includes such examples as the long range group, Grigorchuck group and the basillica group. The highly non-linear structure of these groups make them both interesting and difficult to study. Because of the relative simplicity of the Schreier graphs that define the groups we study…
We study random walk on topological full groups of subshifts, and show the existence of infinite, finitely generated, simple groups with the Liouville property. Results by Matui and Juschenko-Monod have shown that the derived subgroups of topological full groups of minimal subshifts provide the first examples of finitely generated, simple amenable groups. We show that if the (not necessarily minimal) subshift has a complexity function that grows slowly enough (e.g. linearly), then every symmetric and finitely supported probability measure on the topological full group has trivial Poisson-Furst…
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group over a number field $K$, let $Γ$ be a finitely generated Zariski dense subgroup of $G(K)$ and let $Z\subseteq G(K)$ be a thin set, in the sense of Serre. We prove that, if $G/\mathrm{R}_u(G)$ is semisimple and $Z$ satisfies certain necessary conditions, then a long random walk on a Cayley graph of $Γ$ hits elements of $Z$ with negligible probability. We deduce corollaries to Galois covers, characteristic polynomials, and fixed points in group actions. We also prove analogous results in the case where $K$ is a global function field.
Given a $1$-cocycle $b$ with coefficients in an orthogonal representation, we show that any finite dimensional summand of $b$ is cohomologically trivial if and only if $\| b(X_n) \|^2/n$ tends to a constant in probability, where $X_n$ is the trajectory of the random walk $(G,μ)$. As a corollary, we obtain sufficient conditions for $G$ to satisfy Shalom's property $H_{\mathrm{FD}}$. Another application is a convergence to a constant in probability of $μ^{*n}(e) -μ^{*n}(g)$, $n\gg m$, normalized by its average with respect to $μ^{*m}$, for any finitely generated amenable group without infinite v…
We study the connection between the dimension of certain spaces of harmonic functions on a group and its geometric and algebraic properties. Our main result shows that (for sufficiently "nice" random walk measures) a connected, compactly generated, locally compact group has polynomial volume growth if and only if the space of linear growth harmonic functions has finite dimension. This characterization is interesting in light of the fact that Gromov's theorem regarding finitely generated groups of polynomial growth does not have an analog in the connected case. That is, there are examples of co…
Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, $H$ a lcsc totally disconnected group and $ρ: Γ\rightarrow H$ a homomorphism with dense image. We develop a general and explicit technique which provides, for every compact open subgroup $L < H$ and bi-$L$-invariant probability measure $θ$ on $H$, a Furstenberg discretization $τ$ of $θ$ such that the Poisson boundary of $(H,θ)$ is a $τ$-boundary. Among other things, this technique allows us to construct examples of finitely supported random walks on certain lamplighter groups and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, whose Poisson boundaries are prime, but no…
