OH is a key molecule in H2O chemistry, a valuable tool for probing physical conditions, and an important contributor to the cooling of shock regions. OH participates in the re-distribution of energy from the protostar towards the surrounding ISM. Our aim is to assess the origin of the OH emission from the Cepheus A massive star-forming region and to constrain the physical conditions prevailing in the emitting gas. We thus want to probe the processes at work during the formation of massive stars. We present spectrally resolved observations of OH towards the outflows of Cepheus A with the GREAT spectrometer onboard the SOFIA telescope. Three triplets were observed at 1834.7 GHz, 1837.8 GHz, and 2514.3 GHz (163.4, 163.1, and 119.2 microns), at angular resolutions of 16.3", 16.3", and 11.9", respectively. We present the CO (16-15) spectrum at the same position. We compared the integrated intensities in the redshifted wings to shock models. The two triplets near 163 microns are detected in emission with blending hyperfine structure unresolved. Their profiles and that of CO can be fitted by a combination of 2 or 3 Gaussians. The observed 119.2 microns triplet is seen in absorption, since its blending hyperfine structure is unresolved, but with three line-of-sight components and a blueshifted emission wing consistent with that of the other lines. The OH line wings are similar to those of CO, suggesting that they emanate from the same shocked structure. Under this common origin assumption, the observations fall within the model predictions and within the range of use of our model only if we consider that four shock structures are caught in our beam. Our comparisons suggest that the observations might be consistently fitted by a J-type model with nH > 1e5 cm-3, v > 20 km/s, and with a filling factor of ~1. Such a high density is generally found in shocks associated to high-mass protostars.
We present and analyze two spectrally resolved high-J CO lines towards the molecular outflow Cep E, driven by an intermediate-mass class 0 protostar. Using the GREAT receiver on board SOFIA, we observed the CO (12--11) and (13--12) transitions (E_u ~ 430 and 500 K, respectively) towards one position in the blue lobe of this outflow, that had been known to display high-velocity molecular emission. We detect the outflow emission in both transitions, up to extremely high velocities (~ 100 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity). We divide the line profiles into three velocity ranges that each…
Protostellar jets and outflows are key features of the star-formation process, and primary processes of the feedback of young stars on the interstellar medium. Understanding the underlying shocks is necessary to explain how jets and outflows are launched, and to quantify their chemical and energetic impacts on the surrounding medium. We performed a high-spectral resolution study of the [OI]$_{\rm 63 μm}$ emission in the outflow of the intermediate-mass Class 0 protostar Cep E-mm. We present observations of the OI $^3$P$_1 \rightarrow$ $^3$P$_2$, OH between $^2Π_{1/2}$ $J = 3/2$ and $J = 1/2$ a…
By observing radiation-affected gas in the Cepheus B molecular cloud we probe whether the sequential star formation in this source is triggered by the radiation from newly formed stars. We used the dual band receiver GREAT onboard SOFIA to map [C II] and CO 13--12 and 11--10 in Cep B and compared the spatial distribution and the spectral profiles with complementary ground-based data of low-$J$ transitions of CO isotopes, atomic carbon, and the radio continuum. The interaction of the radiation from the neighboring OB association creates a large photon-dominated region (PDR) at the surface of th…
Spectrally-resolved observations of three pure rotational lines of H$_2$, conducted with the EXES instrument on SOFIA toward the classic bow shock HH7, reveal systematic velocity shifts between the S(5) line of ortho-H$_2$ and the two para-H$_2$ lines [S(4) and S(6)] lying immediately above and below it on the rotational ladder. These shifts, reported here for the first time, imply that we are witnessing the conversion of para-H$_2$ to ortho-H$_2$ within a shock wave driven by an outflow from a young stellar object. The observations are in good agreement with the predictions of models for non-…
X-ray emission from massive stellar outflows has been detected in several cases. We present a Chandra observation of HH 168 and show that the soft X-ray emission from a plasma of 0.55 keV within HH 168 is diffuse. The X-ray emission is observed on two different scales: Three individual, yet extended, regions are embedded within a complex of low X-ray surface brightness. Compared to the bow shock the emission is displaced against the outflow direction. We show that there is no significant contribution from young stellar objects (YSOs) and discuss several shock scenarios that can produce the obs…
We report a discovery of shocked gas from the supernova remnant (SNR) G357.7+0.3. Our millimeter and submillimeter observations reveal broad molecular lines of CO(2-1), CO(3-2), CO(4-3), 13CO (2-1) and 13CO (3-2), HCO^+ and HCN using HHSMT, Arizona 12-Meter Telescope, APEX and MOPRA Telescope. The widths of the broad lines are 15-30 kms, and the detection of such broad lines is unambiguous, dynamic evidence showing that the SNR G357.7+0.3 is interacting with molecular clouds. The broad lines appear in extended regions (>4.5'x5'). We also present detection of shocked H2 emission in mid-infrared…
Shocks are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium of galaxies, where they contribute to the energetic balance and to the cycle of matter, and where they are thought to be the primary sites for cosmic rays acceleration. Most of the time: in jets and outflows, supernova remnants, or colliding flows, they are linked with star formation. The study of shocks is hence a powerful tool to probe the evolution of the interstellar medium and to better understand star formation. To these aims, the most precise observations must be compared with the most precise models of shocks. The SOFIA/GREAT instrument …
In some protostellar objects both wide angle outflows and collimated jets are seen, while in others only one is observed. Spitzer provides unprecedented sensitivity in the infrared to study both the jet and outflow features. Here, we use HiRes deconvolution to improve the visualization of spatial morphology by enhancing resolution (to sub-arcsecond levels in the IRAC bands) and removing the contaminating sidelobes from bright sources. We apply this approach to study the jet and outflow features in Cep E a young, energetic Class 0 protostar. In the reprocessed images we detect: (i) wide angle o…
We detect widespread [CII]157.7um emission from the inner 5 kpc of the active galaxy NGC 4258 with the SOFIA integral field spectrometer FIFI-LS. The emission is found associated with warm H2, distributed along and beyond the end of southern jet, in a zone known to contain shock-excited optical filaments. It is also associated with soft X-ray hot-spots, which are the counterparts of the `anomalous radio arms' of NGC~4258, and a 1 kpc-long filament on the minor axis of the galaxy which contains young star clusters. Palomar-CWI H-alpha integral field spectroscopy shows that the filament exhibits…
In molecular outflows from forming low-mass protostars, most oxygen is expected to be locked up in water. However, Herschel observations have shown that typically an order of magnitude or more of the oxygen is still unaccounted for. To test if the oxygen is instead in atomic form, SOFIA-GREAT observed the R1 position of the bright molecular outflow from NGC1333-IRAS4A. The [OI] 63 um line is detected and spectrally resolved. From an intensity peak at +15 km/s, the intensity decreases until +50 km/s. The profile is similar to that of high-velocity (HV) H2O and CO 16-15, the latter observed simu…
We present velocity resolved SOFIA/upGREAT observations of [OI] and [CII] lines toward a Class I protostar, L1551 IRS 5, and its outflows. The SOFIA observations detect [OI] emission toward only the protostar and [CII] emission toward the protostar and the red-shifted outflow. The [OI] emission has a width of $\sim$100 km s$^{-1}$ only in the blue-shifted velocity, suggesting an origin in shocked gas. The [CII] lines are narrow, consistent with an origin in a photodissociation region. Differential dust extinction from the envelope due to the inclination of the outflows is the most likely cause…
We present (sub)millimeter line and continuum observations in a mosaicing mode of the massive star forming region Cepheus A East made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our mosaic covers a total area of about 3$'$ $\times$ 12$'$ centered in the HW 2/3 region. For the first time, this observational study encloses a high angular resolution ($\sim$ 3$''$) together with a large scale mapping of Cepheus A East. We report compact and high velocity $^{12}$CO(2-1) emission associated with the multiple east-west bright H$_2$ condensations present in the region. Blueshifted and redshifted gas emission …
VLBI multi-epoch water maser observations are a powerful tool to study the dense, warm shocked gas very close to massive protostars. The very high-angular resolution of these observations allow us to measure the proper motions of the masers in a few weeks, and together with the radial velocity, to determine their full kinematics. In this paper we present a summary of the main observational results obtained toward the massive star-forming regions of Cepheus A and W75N, among them: (i) the identification of different centers of high-mass star formation activity at scales of 100 AU; (ii) the disc…
Wide-field H-alpha images of the Galactic plane have revealed a new supernova remnant (SNR) nearly three degrees in diameter centred at l = 107.0, b = +9.0. Deep and higher resolution H-alpha and [O III] 5007 Ang images show dozens of H-alpha filaments along the remnant's northern, western, and southwestern limbs, but few [O III] bright filaments. The nebula is well detected in the H-alpha Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey images, with many of its brighter filaments even visible on Digital Sky Survey images. Low-dispersion spectra of several filaments show either Balmer dominated, non-radiati…
Dense, fast-moving ejecta knots in supernova remnants are prime sites for molecule and dust formation. We present SOFIA far-IR spectrometer FIFI-LS observations of CO-rich knots in Cas A which cover a ~1 square arc minute area of the northern shell, in the [O III] 52 and 88 micron and [O I] 63 micron lines. The FIFI-LS spectra reveal that the line profiles of [O III] and [O I] are similar to those of the Herschel PACS [O III] and CO lines. We find that the [O III] maps show very different morphology than the [O I] map. The [O III] maps reveal diffuse, large-scale structures and the ratio of th…
The Cepheus B (CepB) molecular cloud and a portion of the nearby CepOB3b OB association, one of the most active regions of star formation within 1 kpc, have been observed with the IRAC detector on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The goals are to study protoplanetary disk evolution and processes of sequential triggered star formation in the region. Out of ~400 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars selected with an earlier Chandra X-ray Observatory observation, 95% are identified with mid-infrared sources and most of these are classified as diskless or disk-bearing stars. The discovery of the additio…
The current paradigm of Galactic Center (GC) gas motions and star formation envisions sequential star formation in streams of gas as they pass near the supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. This is based on the relative positions of dense molecular clouds, the very young star-forming region Sgr B2, the much older region Sgr C, and the several Myr old Arches and Quintuplet Clusters. Because Sgr B1 is found with Sgr B2 in a common envelope of molecular gas and far-infrared emission, the two sources are thought to be physically related, even though there are indicators of a significantly greater age f…
We present high-spectral resolution observations from 12.96 - 13.33 microns towards Orion IRc2 using the mid-infrared spectrograph, EXES, on SOFIA. These observations probe the physical and chemical conditions of the Orion hot core, which is sampled by a bright, compact, mid-infrared background continuum source in the region, IRc2. All ten of the rovibrational C2H2 transitions expected in our spectral coverage, are detected with high S/N, yielding continuous coverage of the R-branch lines from J=9-8 to J=18-17, including both ortho and para species. Eight of these rovibrational transitions are…
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are well-recognised dust producers, but their net dust production rate remains elusive due to uncertainties in grain properties that propagate into observed dust mass uncertainties, and determine how efficiently these grains are processed by reverse shocks. In this paper, we present a detection of polarised dust emission in the Crab pulsar wind nebula, the second SNR with confirmed polarised dust emission after Cassiopeia A. We constrain the bulk composition of the dust with new SOFIA/HAWC+ polarimetric data in band C 89 um and band D 154 um. After correcting for sync…
We report spatially resolved (FWHM$\sim3.8-4.6"$) mid-IR imaging observations of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027 taken with the 2.5-m telescope aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Images of NGC 7027 were acquired at 6.3, 6.6, 11.1, 19.7, 24.2, 33.6, and 37.1 $μ\mathrm{m}$ using the Faint Object Infrared Camera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST).The observations reveal emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) and warm dust ($T_D\sim90$ K) from the illuminated inner edge of the molecular envelope surrounding the ionized gas and central star. The Dust…
Galactic bars are frequent in disk galaxies and they may support the transfer of matter towards the central engine of active nuclei. The barred galaxy NGC 1097 has magnetic forces controlling the gas flow at several kpc scales, which suggest that magnetic fields (B-fields) are dynamically important along the bar and nuclear ring. However, the effect of the B-field on the gas flows in the central kpc scale has not been characterized. Using thermal polarized emission at $89$ $μ$m with HAWC+/SOFIA, here, we measure that the polarized flux is spatially located at the contact regions of the outer-b…
We present a large set of spectral lines detected in the $40"$ central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Observations were obtained with the three instruments SPIRE, PACS and HIFI on board the Herschel Space Observatory, upGREAT on board of the SOFIA airborne observatory, and the ground based APEX telescope. Combining the spectral and photometry products of SPIRE and PACS we model the dust continuum Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and the most complete $^{12}$CO Line SED reported so far toward the nuclear region of NGC 253. Properties and excitation of the molecular gas were derived f…
We present the first data release of the Survey on extragALactic magnetiSm with SOFIA (SALSA Legacy Program) with a set of 14 nearby ($<20$ Mpc) galaxies with resolved imaging polarimetric observations using HAWC+ from $53$ to $214$ $μ$m at a resolution of $5-18$" ($90$ pc $-$ $1$ kpc). We introduce the definitions and background on extragalactic magnetism, and present the scientific motivation and sample selection of the program. Here, we focus on the general trends in the emissive polarization fraction. Far-infrared polarimetric observations trace the thermal polarized emission of magnetical…
Context. Observing supernova remnants (SNRs) and modelling the shocks they are associated with is the best way to quantify the energy SNRs re-distribute back into the Interstellar Medium (ISM). Aims. We present comparisons of shock models with CO observations in the F knot of the W28 supernova remnant. These comparisons constitute a valuable tool to constrain both the shock characteristics and pre-shock conditions. Methods. New CO observations from the shocked regions with the APEX and SOFIA telescopes are presented and combined. The integrated intensities are compared to the outputs of a grid…
The central area (40"x40") of the bipolar nebula S106 was mapped in the OI line at 63.2 micron with high angular (6") and spectral resolution, using GREAT on board SOFIA. The OI emission distribution is compared to the CO 16-15, CII 158 micron, and CO 11-10 lines, mm-molecular lines, and continuum. It is composed of several velocity components in the range from -30 km/s to 25 km/s. The high-velocity blue- and redshifted emission can be explained as arising from accelerated photodissociated (PDR) gas associated with a dark lane close to the massive binary system S106 IR, and from shocks caused …
FEEDBACK is a SOFIA legacy program dedicated to study the interaction of massive stars with their environment. It performs a survey of 11 galactic high mass star forming regions in the 158 $μ$m (1.9 THz) line of CII and the 63 $μ$m (4.7 THz) line of OI. We employ the 14 pixel LFA and 7 pixel HFA upGREAT instrument to spectrally resolve (0.24 MHz) these FIR structure lines. With an observing time of 96h, we will cover $\sim$6700 arcmin$^2$ at 14.1$''$ angular resolution for the CII line and 6.3$''$ for the OI line. The observations started in spring 2019 (Cycle 7). Our aim is to understand the …
Supernovae from core-collapse of massive stars drive shocks into the molecular clouds from which the stars formed. Such shocks affect future star formation from the molecular clouds, and the fast-moving, dense gas with compressed magnetic fields is associated with enhanced cosmic rays. This paper presents new theoretical modeling, using the Paris-Durham shock model, and new observations, using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), of the H$_2$ S(5) pure rotational line from molecular shocks in the supernova remnant IC443. We generate MHD models for non-steady-state shoc…
During the formation of a star, material is ejected along powerful jets that impact the ambient material. This outflow regulates star formation by e.g. inducing turbulence and heating the surrounding gas. Understanding the associated shocks is therefore essential to the study of star formation. We present comparisons of shock models with CO, H2, and SiO observations in a 'pure' shock position in the BHR71 bipolar outflow. These comparisons provide an insight into the shock and pre-shock characteristics, and allow us to understand the energetic and chemical feedback of star formation on Galacti…

Sulfur has been observed to be severely depleted in dense clouds leading to uncertainty in the molecules that contain it and the chemistry behind their evolution. Here, we aim to shed light on the sulfur chemistry in young stellar objects (YSOs) by using high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of absorption by the $ν_3$ rovibrational band of SO$_2$ obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Using local thermodynamic equilibrium models we derive physical parameters for the SO$_2$ gas in the massive YSO MonR2 IRS3. This yields a SO…

Observations with the Herschel Space Telescope have established that most of the star forming gas is organised in interstellar filaments, a finding that is supported by numerical simulations of the supersonic interstellar medium (ISM) where dense filamentary structures are ubiquitous. We aim to understand the formation of these dense structures by performing observations covering the $^{12}$CO(4-3), $^{12}$CO(3-2), and various CO(2-1) isotopologue lines of the Musca filament, using the APEX telescope. The observed CO intensities and line ratios cannot be explained by PDR (photodissociation reg…
The formation of massive stars is still not well understood. Accumulating a large amount of mass infalling within a single entity in spite of radiation pressure is possible if, among several other conditions, enough thermal energy is released. Despite numerous water line observations, with the Herschel Space Observatory, in most of the sources observations were not able to trace the emission from the hot core around the newly forming protostellar object. We want to probe the physical conditions and water abundance in the inner layers of the host protostellar object NGC7538-IRS1 using a highly …

We present spectral line mapping observations toward four massive star-forming regions (Cepheus A, DR21S, S76E and G34.26+0.15), with the IRAM 30 meter telescope at 2 mm and 3 mm bands. Totally 396 spectral lines from 51 molecules, one helium recombination line, ten hydrogen recombination lines, and 16 unidentified lines were detected in these four sources. An emission line of nitrosyl cyanide (ONCN, 14$_{0,14}$-13$_{0,13}$) was detected in G34.26+0.15, as first detection in massive star-forming regions. We found that the $c$-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ and NH$_{2}$D show enhancement in shocked regions as …
The methylidyne radical CH is commonly used as a proxy for H$_2$ in the cold, neutral phase of the interstellar medium. The optical spectroscopy of CH is limited by interstellar extinction, whereas far-infrared observations provide an integral view through the Galaxy. While the HF ground state absorption, another H$_2$ proxy in diffuse gas, frequently suffers from saturation, CH remains transparent both in spiral-arm crossings and high-mass star forming regions, turning this light hydride into a universal surrogate for H$_2$. However, in slow shocks and in regions dissipating turbulence its ab…
NGC 2146, a nearby luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), presents evidence for outflows along the disk minor axis in all gas phases (ionized, neutral atomic and molecular). We present an analysis of the multi-phase starburst driven superwind in the central 5 kpc as traced in spatially resolved spectral line observations, using far-IR Herschel PACS spectroscopy, to probe the effects on the atomic and ionized gas, and optical integral field spectroscopy to examine the ionized gas through diagnostic line ratios. We observe an increased ~250 km/s velocity dispersion in the [OI] 63 micron, [OIII] 88 mic…
