During the formation of a star, material is ejected along powerful jets that impact the ambient material. This outflow regulates star formation by e.g. inducing turbulence and heating the surrounding gas. Understanding the associated shocks is therefore essential to the study of star formation. We present comparisons of shock models with CO, H2, and SiO observations in a 'pure' shock position in the BHR71 bipolar outflow. These comparisons provide an insight into the shock and pre-shock characteristics, and allow us to understand the energetic and chemical feedback of star formation on Galactic scales. New CO (Jup = 16, 11, 7, 6, 4, 3) observations from the shocked regions with the SOFIA and APEX telescopes are presented and combined with earlier H2 and SiO data (from the Spitzer and APEX telescopes). The integrated intensities are compared to a grid of models that were obtained from a magneto-hydrodynamical shock code which calculates the dynamical and chemical structure of these regions combined with a radiative transfer module based on the 'large velocity gradient' approximation. The CO emission leads us to update the conclusions of our previous shock analysis: pre-shock densities of 1e4 cm-3 and shock velocities around 20-25 km s-1 are still constrained, but older ages are inferred ( 4000 years). We evaluate the contribution of shocks to the excitation of CO around forming stars. The SiO observations are compatible with a scenario where less than 4% of the pre-shock SiO belongs to the grain mantles. We infer outflow parameters: a mass of 1.8x1e-2 Msun was measured in our beam, in which a momentum of 0.4 Msun km s-1 is dissipated, for an energy of 4.2x1e43erg. We analyse the energetics of the outflow species by species. Comparing our results with previous studies highlights their dependence on the method: H2 observations only are not sufficient to evaluate the mass of outflows.
Using CARMA, we imaged the 87 GHz SiO v=0 J=2-1 line toward Orion-KL with 0.45 arcsec angular resolution. The maps indicate that radio source I drives a bipolar outflow into the surrounding molecular cloud along a NE--SW axis, in agreement with the model of Greenhill et al. (2004). The extended high velocity outflow from Orion-KL appears to be a continuation of this compact outflow. High velocity gas extends farthest along a NW--SE axis, suggesting that the outflow direction changes on time scales of a few hundred years.
Bipolar outflows constitute some of the best laboratories to study shock chemistry in the interstellar medium. A number of molecular species have their abundance enhanced by several orders of magnitude in the outflow gas, likely as a combined result of dust mantle disruption and high temperature gas chemistry, and therefore become sensitive indicators of the physical changes taking place in the shock. Identifying these species and understanding their chemical behavior is therefore of high interest both to chemical studies and to our understanding of the star-formation process. Here we review s…
We present the results of SiO (2-1) and SO2 (12-13) line observations of Sgr B2(N) made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at an angular resolution of ~2arcsec. Our analysis of the SiO and SO2 line emission reveals a bipolar molecular outflow in an east-west direction whose driving source is located at K2. In addition, SO2 line core shows a north-south velocity gradient most probably indicating a hot core of molecular gas rotating around K2. Fractional abundances of SO2 and SiO (X(SO2) and X(SiO), respectively) in the outflowing molecular gas are derived from comparis…
We present new 230 GHz Submillimeter Array observations of the candidate first hydrostatic core Per-Bolo 58. We report the detection of a 1.3 mm continuum source and a bipolar molecular outflow, both centered on the position of the candidate first hydrostatic core. The continuum detection has a total flux density of 26.6 +/- 4.0 mJy, from which we calculate a total (gas and dust) mass of 0.11 +/- 0.05 Msun and a mean number density of 2.0 +/- 1.6 X 10^7 cm-3. There is some evidence for the existence of an unresolved component in the continuum detection, but longer-baseline observations are req…
We present near-IR K-band intermediate-dispersion spatially-resolved spectroscopic observations of a limited sample of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe). The spectra have been used to determine the excitation mechanism of the H2 molecule using standard line ratios diagnostics. The H2 molecule is predominantly shock-excited in bipolar PNe with broad equatorial rings, whereas bipolar PNe with narrow equatorial waists present either UV excitation at their cores (e.g., Hb 12) or shock-excitation at their bipolar lobes (e.g., M1-92). The shock-excitation among bipolar PNe with ring is found to be cor…
We have carried out high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the carbon star V Hya, covering the 4.6 micron band of CO. These data, taken over 7 epochs, show that the circumstellar environment of V Hya consists of a complex high-velocity (HV) outflow containing at least six kinematic components with expansion velocities ranging between 70 and 120 km/s, together with a slow-moving normal outflow at about 10 km/s. Physical changes occur in the HV outflow regions on a time-scale as short as two days, limiting their extent to < ~ 10^{16} cm. The intrinsic line-width for each HV component is q…
We report ALMA and SMA observations of the luminous infrared merger NGC 3256, the most luminous galaxy within z=0.01. Both of the two merger nuclei separated by 5" (0.8 kpc) on the sky have a compact concentration of molecular gas, i.e., nuclear disks with Sigma_mol > 10^3 Msun pc^-2. The one at the northern nucleus is face-on while the southern nuclear disk is almost edge-on. The northern nucleus is more massive and has molecular arcs and spiral arms around. The high-velocity molecular gas previously found in the system is resolved to two molecular outflows associated with each of the two nuc…
Steady-state advective accretion flows in the presence of thermal conduction are studied. All three components of velocity in a spherical coordinates are considered and the flow displays both inflowing and outflowing regions according to our similarity solutions. Thermal conductivity provides latitudinal energy transport and so, the flow rotates more slowly and becomes hotter with increasing thermal conductivity coefficient. We also show that opening angle of the outflow region decreases as thermal conduction becomes stronger.
Kinematics of the molecular clouds in the star forming complex M17 is studied using the high-resolution CO-line mapping data at resolution ($20" \sim 0.2$ pc) with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The northern molecular cloud of M17, which we call the molecular "lobe", is shown to have an elongated shell structure around a top-covered cylindrical cavity. The lobe is expanding at $\sim 5$ \kms in the minor axis direction, and at $ \sim 3/\cos \ i$ km s$^{-1}$ in the major axis direction, where $i$ is the inclination of the major axis. The kinetic energy of the expanding motion is on the order of $\…
We present a near-infrared $H$ band polarimetric study toward the S235 e2s3 protostar, obtained using the POLICAN instrument on the 2.1m OAGH telescope. The images reveal a bipolar outflow with a total length of about 0.5pc. The outflow nebulosity presents a high degree of linear polarization ($\sim80\%$) and reveals a centrosymmetric pattern with the polarization position angles. The polarization characteristics suggest their origin to be single scattering associated with dust in the outflow. Using multiwavelength archival data, we performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting based on…
We present the first results of a pilot program to conduct an ALMA Band 10 spectral line survey of the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. The observations were taken in exceptional weather conditions (0.19 mm precipitable water) with typical system temperatures $T_{\rm{sys}}$ $<$950 K at $\sim$890 GHz. A bright, bipolar north-south outflow is seen in HDO and CS emission, driven by the embedded massive protostar MM1B. This has allowed, for the first time, a direct comparison of the thermal water in this outflow to the location of water maser emission from prior 22 GHz VLA observations. Th…
A long slit spectrum from the barred galaxy NGC 1415 has been obtained with the 2.1m Guillermo Haro telescope in Cananea, Mexico at position angle 155d (EofN) and shows the kinematics of Na I D lines (in absorption) and Halpha, 6562.8 A, [NII] 6548 A, [NII] 6584 A, [SII] 6716 A, and [SII] 6731 A lines in emission from the central regions and the disk. Our previous Halpha continuum-free imaging of the central region showed mainly two central bright Halpha knots straddling the nucleus, and Halpha emission regions along the south-east and north-west inner spiral arms. Velocities of the Na I D abs…
Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) mapping observations in CO (9-8) and (4-3) toward a high-mass star-forming region, NGC 6334 I, are presented. The CO (9-8) map has a 6.4 arcsec resolution, revealing a ~0.5 pc, jet-like, and bipolar outflow. This is the first map of a molecular outflow in a THz line. The CO (9-8) and (4-3) lines arising from the outflow lobes both show extremely high-velocity line wings, and their ratios indicate a gas temperature greater than 100 K and a density higher than 10^4 cm^{-3}. The spatial-velocity structure of the CO (9-8) data is typical of a bow-shock-driven f…
Here we present a new bowshock blue-shifted source in the close vicinity of Sgr A* that we name X8. We use data-sets that are based on SINFONI observations with the Very Large Telescope. We can trace the source between 2006 and 2016 in the blue-shifted line maps and it shows not only positional similarities to X7 but also the same spectral footprint. The symmetry axis of both extended sources points towards Sgr A* and exhibits [Fe III] emission lines that arise due to wind-wind shocks. In particular, the source X8 has a bipolar morphology, which makes it the closest bipolar source in the vicin…
The morphology of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) can be attributed to interactions between a fast wind from the central engine and dense toroidal shaped ejecta left over from common envelope (CE) evolution. Here we use the 3-D hydrodynamic AMR code AstroBEAR to study the possibility that bipolar PN outflows can emerge collimated even from an uncollimated spherical wind in the aftermath of a CE event. The output of a single CE simulation via the SPH code PHANTOM serves as the initial conditions. Four cases of winds, all with high enough momenta to account for observed high momenta preplanetary…
In the theory of star formation, the first hydrostatic core (FHSC) phase is a critical step in which a condensed object emerges from a prestellar core. This step lasts about one thousand years, a very short time compared with the lifetime of prestellar cores, and therefore is hard to detect unambiguously. We present IRAM Plateau de Bure observations of the Barnard 1b dense molecular core, combining detections of H2CO and CH3OH spectral lines and dust continuum at 2.3" resolution (~ 500 AU). The two compact cores B1b-N and B1b-S are detected in the dust continuum at 2mm, with fluxes that agree …
Hu\,1-2 is a planetary nebula that contains an isolated knot located northwestern of the main nebula, which could be related to a collimated outflow. We present a subsarcsecond H$α$+[N\,{\sc ii}] image and a high-resolution, long-slit spectrum of Hu\,1-2 that allow us to identify the southeastern counterpart of the northwestern knot and to establish their high velocity ($>$ 340 km\,s$^{-1}$), collimated bipolar outflow nature. The detection of the northwestern knot in POSS red plates allows us to carry out a proper motion analysis by combining three POSS red plates and two narrow-band H$α$+[N\…
We present Caltech Submillimeter Observatory CO (2-1) and Spitzer IRAC observations toward IRAS 22506+5944, which is a 10$^4$ $L_{\odot}$ massive star-forming region. The CO (2-1) maps show an east-west bipolar molecular outflow originating from the 3 mm dust continuum peak. The Spitzer IRAC color-composite image reveals a pair of bow-shaped tips which are prominent in excess 4.5 $μ$m emission and are located to the leading fronts of the bipolar outflow, providing compelling evidence for the existence of bow-shocks as the driving agents of the molecular outflow. By comparing our CO (2-1) obser…
The planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6778 harbors a binary central star with a short orbital period and displays two systems of fast collimated outflows. In order to assess the influence of the evolution through a common-envelope phase of the binary system of NGC 6778 on its formation and shaping, we have used narrow-band images and high-dispersion long-slit spectra of the nebula to investigate its detailed morphology and kinematics. We find that the overall structure of NGC 6778 can be described as a bipolar PN. The equatorial ring is highly disrupted and many radial features (filamentary wisps and …
HH 212 is a Class 0 protostellar system found to host a "hamburger"-shaped dusty disk with a rotating disk atmosphere and a collimated SiO jet at a distance of ~ 400 pc. Recently, a compact rotating outflow has been detected in SO and SO2 toward the center along the jet axis at ~ 52 au (0.13") resolution. Here we resolve the compact outflow into a small-scale wide-opening rotating outflow shell and a collimated jet, with the observations in the same S-bearing molecules at ~ 16 au (0.04") resolution. The collimated jet is aligned with the SiO jet, tracing the shock interactions in the jet. The …
Very low-mass stars are known to have jets and outflows, which is indicative of a scaled-down version of low-mass star formation. However, only very few outflows in very low-mass sources are well characterized. We characterize the bipolar molecular outflow of the very low-mass star Par-Lup3-4, a 0.12 M$_{\odot}$ object known to power an optical jet. We observed Par-Lup3-4 with ALMA in Bands 6 and 7, detecting both the continuum and CO molecular gas. In particular, we studied three main emission lines: CO(2-1), CO(3-2), and $^{13}$CO(3-2). Our observations reveal for the first time the base of …
The subclass of bipolar Planetary Nebulae (PN) exhibits well-defined low-power outflows and some show shock-related equatorial spiderweb structures and hourglass structures surrounding these outflows. These structures are distinctly different from the phenomena associated with spherical and elliptical PN and suggest a non-standard way to simultaneously energise both kind of structures. This paper presents evidence from the published literature on bipolar PN Hb\,12 and other sources in support of an alternative scenario for energizing these structures by means of accretion from material shells …
Most bipolar outflows are associated with individual young stellar objects and have small opening angles. Here we report the discovery of an extremely wide-angle ($\sim$180$\arcdeg$) bipolar outflow ("EWBO") in a cluster forming region AFGL 5142 from low-velocity emission of the HCN (3-2) and HCO$^{+}$ (3-2) lines. This bipolar outflow is along a north-west to south-east direction with a line-of-sight flow velocity of about 3 km~s$^{-1}$ and is spatially connected to the high-velocity jet-like outflows. It seems to be a collection of low-velocity material entrained by the high-velocity outflow…
Context. A small group of bipolar protostellar outflows display strong emission from shock-tracer molecules such as SiO and CH3OH, and are generally referred to as "chemically active." The best-studied outflow from this group is the one in L 1157. Aims. We study the molecular emission from the bipolar outflow powered by the very young stellar object HH 114 MMS and compare its chemical composition with that of the L1157 outflow. Methods. We have used the IRAM 30m radio telescope to observe a number of transitions from CO, SiO, CH3OH, SO, CS, HCN, and HCO+ toward the HH 114 MMS outflow. The obse…
We present a comprehensive set of spatially resolved, integral field spectroscopic mapping of the Wolf-Rayet planetary nebula Th 2-A, obtained using the Wide Field Spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3-m telescope. Velocity-resolved H$α$ channel maps with a resolution of 20 km s$^{-1}$ allow us to identify different kinematic components within the nebula. This information is used to develop a three-dimensional morpho-kinematic model of the nebula using the interactive kinematic modeling tool SHAPE. These results suggest that Th 2-A has a thick toroidal shell with an expansion …
The first hydrostatic core, the first quasi-hydrostatic object formed during the star formation process, is still the observational missing link between the prestellar and protostellar phases, mainly due to its short lifetime. Although we have not established a clear method to identify this rare object, recent theoretical studies predict that the first core has millimeter continuum emission and low-velocity outflow with a wide opening angle. An extensive continuum/outflow survey toward a large number of $"$starless$"$ cores in nearby star-forming regions works as a pathfinder. We observed 32 p…
The object of this study is one of the most energetic and luminous molecular outflows known in the Galaxy, G331.512-0.103. Observations with ALMA Band 7 (350 GHz; 0.86 mm) reveal a very compact, extremely young bipolar outflow and a more symmetric outflowing shocked shell surrounding a very small region of ionized gas. The velocities of the bipolar outflow are about 70 km s^{-1} on either side of the systemic velocity. The expansion velocity of the shocked shell is ~24 km s^{-1}, implying a crossing time of about 2000 yrs. Along the symmetry axis of the outflow, there is a velocity feature, wh…
We have detected in ALMA observations CO J = 6 - 5 emission from the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. The low-velocity (up to +/- 70 km/s relative to systemic) CO emission resolves into a 12x7 pc structure, roughly aligned with the nuclear radio source. Higher-velocity emission (up to +/- 400 km/s) is consistent with a bipolar outflow in a direction nearly perpendicular (roughly 80 degrees) to the nuclear disk. The position-velocity diagram shows that in addition to the outflow, the velocity field may also contain rotation about the disk axis. These observations provide compelling evide…
We present ALMA follow-up observations of two massive, early-stage core candidates, C1-N & C1-S, in Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G028.37+00.07, which were previously identified by their N2D+(3-2) emission and show high levels of deuteration of this species. The cores are also dark at far infrared wavelengths up to ~100 microns. We detect 12CO(2-1) from a narrow, highly-collimated bipolar outflow that is being launched from near the center of the C1-S core, which is also the location of the peak 1.3mm dust continuum emission. This protostar, C1-Sa, has associated dense gas traced by C18O(2-1) and…
We present a parsec-scale molecular hydrogen (H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) at 2.12~\micron) outflow discovered from the UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H$_2$. The outflow is located in the infrared dark cloud core MSXDC G053.11+00.05 MM1 at 1.7 kpc and likely associated with two young stellar objects (YSOs) at the center. The overall morphology of the outflow is bipolar along the NE-SW direction with a brighter lobe to the southwest, but the detailed structure consists of several flows and knots. With the total length of $\sim$1 pc, the outflow luminosity is fairly high with $L_{\rm H_{2}} > 6~L_{\sun}$…
One of the outstanding problems in star-formation theory concerns the transfer of angular momentum such that mass can accrete onto a newly born young stellar object (YSO). From a theoretical standpoint, outflows and jets are predicted to play an essential role in angular momentum transfer and their rotation motions have been reported for both low- and high-mass YSOs. However, little quantitative discussion on outflow launching mechanisms have been presented for high-mass YSOs due to a lack of observational data. Here we present a clear signature of rotation in the bipolar outflow driven by Ori…
We investigate how magnetically driven outflows are powered by a rotating, weakly magnetized accretion flow onto a supermassive black hole using axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our proposed model focuses on the accretion dynamics on an intermediate scale between the Schwarzschild radius and the galactic scale, which is $\sim$1-100 pc. We demonstrate that a rotating disk formed on a parsec-scale acquires poloidal magnetic fields via accretion and this produces an asymmetric bipolar outflow at some point. The formation of the outflow was found to follow the growth of strongly magne…
Bipolar molecular outflows have been observed and studied extensively in the past, but some recent observations of periodic variations in maser intensity pose new challenges. Even quasi-periodic maser flares have been observed and reported in the literature. Motivated by these data, we have tried to study situations in binary systems with specific attention to the two observed features, i.e., the bipolar flows and the variabilities in the maser intensity. We have studied the evolution of spherically symmetric wind from one of the bodies in the binary system, in the plane of the binary. Our app…
We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) 1.35 mm subarcsecond angular resolution observations toward the LkHα 234 intermediate-mass star-forming region. The dust emission arises from a filamentary structure of $\sim$5 arcsec ($\sim$4500 au) enclosing VLA 1-3 and MM 1, perpendicular to the different outflows detected in the region. The most evolved objects are located at the southeastern edge of the dust filamentary structure and the youngest ones at the northeastern edge. The circumstellar structures around VLA 1, VLA 3, and MM 1 have radii between $\sim$200 and $\sim$375 au and masses in the $\si…
We have mapped the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 17150-3224 in 350 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 line at an angular resolution of about 0".09 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. A continuum source is detected at the center of the nebula, elongated along the equatorial plane, likely tracing a dusty torus around the central source. Continuum emission is also detected on both sides of the central continuum source in the equatorial plane, probably resulting from interactions of collimated fast winds with envelope material in the equator. CO emission is detected along the optical lobe.…
Massive protostars generate strong radiation feedback, which may help set the mass they achieve by the end of the accretion process. Studying such feedback is therefore crucial for understanding the formation of massive stars. We report the discovery of a photoionized bipolar outflow towards the massive protostar G45.47+0.05 using high-resolution observations at 1.3 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) and at 7 mm with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). By modeling the free-free continuum, the ionized outflow is found to be a photoevaporation flow with an ele…
We report multi-epoch VLBI H$_2$O maser observations towards the compact cluster of YSOs close to the Herbig Be star LkH$α$ 234. This cluster includes LkH$α$ 234 and at least nine more YSOs that are formed within projected distances of $\sim$10 arcsec ($\sim$9,000 au). We detect H$_2$O maser emission towards four of these YSOs. In particular, our VLBI observations (including proper motion measurements) reveal a remarkable very compact ($\sim$0.2 arcsec = $\sim$180 au), bipolar H$_2$O maser outflow emerging from the embedded YSO VLA 2. We estimate a kinematic age of $\sim$40 yr for this bipolar…
We report the discovery of 11 bipolar outflows within a projected distance of 1pc from Sgr A* based on deep ALMA observations of $^{13}$CO, H30$α$ and SiO (5-4) lines with sub-arcsecond and $\sim1.3$ km/s, resolutions. These unambiguous signatures of young protostars manifest as approaching and receding lobes of dense gas swept up by the jets created during the formation and early evolution of stars. The lobe masses and momentum transfer rates are consistent with young protostellar outflows found throughout the disk of the Galaxy. The mean dynamical age of the outflow population is estimated t…
We present narrow-band optical and near-IR imaging and optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of Hu1-2, a Galactic planetary nebula (PN) with a pair of [N II]-bright, fast-moving (> 340 km/s) bipolar knots. Intermediate-dispersion spectra are used to derive physical conditions and abundances across the nebula, and high-dispersion spectra to study the spatio-kinematical structure. Generally Hu1-2 has high He/H (~0.14) and N/O ratios (~0.9), typical of Type I PNe. On the other hand, its abundances of O, Ne, S, and Ar are low as compared with the average abundances of Galactic bulge and dis…
We present APEX, infrared and radio continuum observations of the G345.88-1.10 hub filament system which is a newly discovered star-forming cloud that hosts an unusually bright bipolar infrared nebulosity at its centre. At a distance of 2.26$^{+0.30}_{-0.21}$ kpc, G345.88-1.10 exhibits a network of parsec-long converging filaments. At the junction of these filaments lie four infrared-quiet fragments. The densest fragment (with M=210 M$_{\odot}$, R$_{\rm{eff}}=0.14$ pc) sits at the centre of a wide (opening angle of $\sim$ 90$\pm$15$^{o}$) bipolar nebulosity. $^{12}$CO(2-1) observations show th…
Motivated by the observations of several infrared-excess bow-shock sources and proplyd-like objects near the Galactic centre, we analyse the effect of a potential outflow from the centre on bow shock properties. We show that due to the non-negligible isotropic central outflow the bow-shock evolution along the orbit becomes asymmetric between the pre-peribothron and post-peribothron phases. This is demonstrated by the calculation of the bow-shock size evolution, the velocity along the shocked layer, the surface density of the bow-shock, and by emission-measure maps close to the peribothron pass…
We imaged the continuum and molecular line emission from Orion Source I (SrcI) with up to 30 mas (12 AU) resolution at 43, 99, 223, and 340 GHz in an attempt to probe the structure and chemistry of the circumstellar disk and bipolar outflow associated with this high mass protostar. The continuum spectral index ranges from $\sim$2 along the midplane of the disk to $\sim$3 along the edges, consistent with dust that is optically thick in the midplane but becomes optically thin at the periphery. Salt (NaCl) emission is visible where the dust is optically thin; it provides a unique tracer of the ve…
Shocks are a crucial probe for understanding the ongoing chemistry within ices on interstellar dust grains where many complex organic molecules (COMs) are believed to be formed. However, previous work has been limited to the initial liberation into the gas phase through non-thermal desorption processes such as sputtering. Here, we present results from the adapted three-phase gas-grain chemical network code NAUTILUS, with the inclusion of additional high-temperature reactions, non-thermal desorption, collisional dust heating, and shock-physics parameters. This enhanced model is capable of repro…
Protostellar jets and outflows are key features of the star-formation process, and primary processes of the feedback of young stars on the interstellar medium. Understanding the underlying shocks is necessary to explain how jets and outflows are launched, and to quantify their chemical and energetic impacts on the surrounding medium. We performed a high-spectral resolution study of the [OI]$_{\rm 63 μm}$ emission in the outflow of the intermediate-mass Class 0 protostar Cep E-mm. We present observations of the OI $^3$P$_1 \rightarrow$ $^3$P$_2$, OH between $^2Π_{1/2}$ $J = 3/2$ and $J = 1/2$ a…
We perform two-dimensional axially symmetric radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to assess the impact of outflows and radiative force feedback from massive protostars by varying when the protostellar outflow starts, the ratio of ejection to accretion rates, and the strength of the wide angle disk wind component. The star formation efficiency, i.e. the ratio of final stellar mass to initial core mass, is dominated by radiative forces and the ratio of outflow to accretion rates. Increasing this ratio has three effects: First, the protostar grows slower with a lower luminosity at any given time, l…

Kinematic signatures of the jet, winds, multicavities, and episodic shells arising in the unified model of bipolar outflows developed in Shang et al.\ (2020), in which an outflow forms by radially directed, wide-angle toroidally magnetized winds interacting with magnetized isothermal toroids, are extracted in the form of position--velocity diagrams. Elongated outflow lobes, driven by magnetized winds and their interplay with the environment, are dominated by extended bubble structures with mixing layers beyond the conventional thin-shell models. The axial cylindrically stratified density jet c…
We compare multi-epoch sub-arcsecond VLA imaging of the 22 GHz water masers toward the massive protocluster NGC6334I observed before and after the recent outburst of MM1B in (sub)millimeter continuum. Since the outburst, the water maser emission toward MM1 has substantially weakened. Simultaneously, the strong water masers associated with the synchrotron continuum point source CM2 have flared by a mean factor of 6.5 (to 4.2 kJy) with highly-blueshifted features (up to 70 km/s from LSR) becoming more prominent. The strongest flaring water masers reside 3000 au north of MM1B and form a remarkabl…
We present ALMA continuum and molecular line emission maps at $\sim$1 mm of OH 231.8, a well studied bipolar nebula around an AGB star. The excellent angular resolution of our maps ($\sim$20 mas) allows us to scrutinise the central nebular regions of OH 231.8, which hold the clues to unravel how this iconic object assembled its complex nebular architecture. We report, for the first time in this object and others of its kind, the discovery of a rotating circumbinary disk selectively traced by NaCl, KCl, and H$_2$O emission lines. This represents the first detection of KCl in an oxygen-rich AGB …
Changing physical conditions in the vicinity of protostars allow for a rich and interesting chemistry to occur. Heating and cooling of the gas allows molecules to be released from and frozen out on dust grains. These changes in physics, traced by chemistry, as well as the kinematical information allows us to distinguish between different scenarios describing the infall of matter and the launching of molecular outflows and jets. We aim at determining the spatial distribution of different species, of different chemical origin. This is to examine the physical processes in play in the observed reg…
We explore a new, efficient mechanism that can power toroidally magnetized jets up to two to three times their original terminal velocity after they enter a self-similar phase of magnetic acceleration. Underneath the elongated outflow lobe formed by a magnetized bubble, a wide-angle free wind, through the interplay with its ambient toroid, is compressed and accelerated around its axial jet. The extremely magnetic bubble can inflate over its original size, depending on the initial Alfvén Mach number $M_A$ of the launched flow. The shape-independent slope $\partial{}v_r/\partial{}r=2/3t$ is a sa…
We have searched the Lynds 988 dark cloud complex for optical (\ha{} and \sii{}) and near-IR (\mh{} 2.12 $μ$m) shocks from protostellar outflows. We find 20 new Herbig-Haro objects and 6 new \mh{} shocks (MHO objects), 3 of which are cross detections. Using the morphology in the optical and near-IR, we connect several of these shocks into at least 5 distinct outflow systems and identify their source protostars from catalogs of infrared sources. Two outflows in the cloud, from IRAS 21014+5001 and IRAS 21007+4951, are in excess of 1 pc in length. The IRAS 21007+4951 outflow has carved a large ca…
