Observations of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect measure the density-weighted velocity field, a potentially powerful cosmological probe. This paper presents an analytical method to predict the power spectrum and two-point correlation function of the density-weighted velocity in redshift space, the direct observables in kSZ surveys. We show a simple relation between the density power spectrum and the density-weighted velocity power spectrum that holds for both dark matter and halos. Using this relation, we can then extend familiar perturbation expansion techniques to the kSZ power spectrum. One of the most important features of density-weighted velocity statistics in redshift space is the change in sign of the cross-correlation between the density and density-weighted velocity at mildly small scales due to nonlinear redshift space distortions. Our model can explain this characteristic feature without any free parameters. As a result, our results can precisely predict the non-linear behavior of the density-weighted velocity field in redshift space up to $\sim30\ h^{-1} {\rm Mpc}$ for dark matter particles at the redshifts of $z=0.0$, $0.5$, and $1.0$.
The motion of our solar system relative to the CMB rest frame leads to subtle distortions in the observed CMB sky map due to the aberration effect. Usually the corresponding peculiar velocity is determined from the CMB dipole but neglecting intrinsic dipole contributions. Here it is investigated whether certain invariant scalar measures, which are derived from first and second order covariant derivatives on the sphere, can detect the distortions caused by the aberration effect at high multipoles. This would in principle allow to disentangle the Doppler from intrinsic dipole contributions provi…
We present improved modelling of the redshift-space distortions of galaxy clustering that arise from peculiar velocities. We create mock galaxy catalogues in the framework of the halo model, using data from the Bolshoi project. These mock galaxy populations are inserted into the haloes with additional degrees of freedom that govern spatial and kinematical biases of the galaxy populations relative to the dark matter. We explore this generalised halo model with an MCMC algorithm, comparing the predictions to data from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, and thus derive one of the first c…
Galaxy peculiar velocities provide an integral source of cosmological information that can be harnessed to measure the growth rate of large scale structure and constrain possible extensions to General Relativity. In this work, we present a method for extracting the information contained within galaxy peculiar velocities through an ensemble of direct peculiar velocity and galaxy clustering correlation statistics, including the effects of redshift space distortions, using data from the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey. Our method compares the auto- and cross-correlation function multipoles of these …
The peculiar velocities of biased tracers of the cosmic density field contain important information about the growth of large scale structure and generate anisotropy in the observed clustering of galaxies. Using N-body data, we show that velocity expansions for halo redshift-space power spectra are converged at the percent-level at perturbative scales for most line-of-sight angles $μ$ when the first three pairwise velocity moments are included, and that the third moment is well-approximated by a counterterm-like contribution. We compute these pairwise-velocity statistics in Fourier space using…
We present an improved method for calculating the parallel and perpendicular velocity correlation functions directly from peculiar velocity surveys using weighted maximum-likelihood estimators. A central feature of the new method is the use of position-dependent weighting scheme that reduces the influence of nearby galaxies, which are typically overrepresented relative to the more distant galaxies in most surveys. We demonstrate that the correlation functions calculated this way are less susceptible to biases due to our particular location in the Universe, and thus are more easily comparable t…

An accurate method to determine the systematics due to the peculiar velocities of galaxies in measuring the Hubble constant from gravitational wave standard sirens
To understand the nature of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we need to combine constraints on the expansion rate and growth of structure. The growth rate is usually extracted from three dimensional galaxy maps by exploiting the effects of peculiar motions on galaxy clustering. However, theoretical models of the probability distribution function (PDF) of galaxy pairwise peculiar velocities are not accurate enough on small scales to reduce the error on theoretical predictions to the level required to match the precision expected for measurements from future surveys. Here, we improve t…
The observer peculiar motion produces boosting effects in the background anisotropies with frequency spectral behaviours related to its spectrum. We study how the frequency spectrum of the background isotropic monopole emission is modified and transferred to the frequency spectra at higher multipoles, l. We perform the analysis in terms of spherical harmonic expansion up to a certain lmax, for various models from radio to far-IR. We derive a system of linear equations to obtain spherical harmonic coefficients and provide explicit solutions up to lmax=6 as linear combinations of the signals at …
We propose the use of angular fluctuations in the galaxy redshift field as a new way to extract cosmological information in the Universe. This new probe $δz (\hat{n})$ consists on the statistics of sky maps built by projecting redshifts under a Gaussian window of width $σ_z$ centred upon a redshift $z_{\rm obs}$, and weighted by the galaxy density field. We compute the angular power spectrum of the $δz (\hat{n})$ field in both numerical simulations and in linear perturbation theory. From these we find that the $δz (\hat{n})$ field: {\it (i)} is sensitive to the underlying density and peculiar …
Observations of galaxy clustering are made in redshift space, which results in distortions to the underlying isotropic distribution of galaxies. These redshift-space distortions (RSD) not only degrade important features of the matter density field, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peaks, but also pose challenges for the theoretical modelling of observational probes. Here we introduce an iterative nonlinear reconstruction algorithm to remove RSD effects from galaxy clustering measurements, and assess its performance by using mock galaxy catalogues. The new method is found to be a…
Future high spectroscopic resolution galaxy surveys will observe galaxies with nearly full-sky footprints. Modeling the galaxy clustering for these surveys, therefore, must include the wide-angle effect with narrow redshift binning. In particular, when the redshift-bin size is comparable to the typical peculiar velocity field, the nonlinear redshift-space distortion (RSD) effect becomes important. A naive projection of the Fourier-space RSD model to spherical harmonic space leads to diverging expressions. In this paper we present a general formalism of projecting the higher-order RSD terms int…
Redshift-space distortions (RSD) generically affect any spatially-dependent observable that is mapped using redshift information. The effect on the observed clustering of galaxies is the primary example of this. This paper is devoted to another example: the effect of RSD on the apparent peculiar motions of tracers as inferred from their positions in redshift space (i.e. the observed distance). Our theoretical study is motivated by practical considerations, mainly, the direct estimation of the velocity power spectrum, which is preferably carried out using the tracer's redshift-space position (s…
