The observer peculiar motion produces boosting effects in the background anisotropies with frequency spectral behaviours related to its spectrum. We study how the frequency spectrum of the background isotropic monopole emission is modified and transferred to the frequency spectra at higher multipoles, l. We perform the analysis in terms of spherical harmonic expansion up to a certain lmax, for various models from radio to far-IR. We derive a system of linear equations to obtain spherical harmonic coefficients and provide explicit solutions up to lmax=6 as linear combinations of the signals at N=lmax+1 colatitudes. The associated Legendre polynomials symmetry with respect to π/2 is used to separate the system into two subsystems, one for l=0 and even l, the other for odd l. This improves the solutions accuracy with respect to an arbitrary colatitudes choice. We apply the method to analytical or semi-analytical representions of monopole spectra, i.e. to four types of CMB distortions, four types of extragalactic backgrounds superimposed to the CMB Planckian spectrum and some combinations of them. We present our results in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients, relationships between the observed and intrinsic monopoles, maps, angular power spectra. We compare the method results with the ones obtained using more computationally demanding numerical integrations or map generation/inversion. The method is generalized to include the effect of the observer motion relative to the Sun. Its simplicity and efficiency can significantly alleviate the computational effort needed for accurate predictions and for the analysis of future data. We discuss the superposition of the CMB intrinsic anisotropies and of the effects induced by the observer motion, exploring for the possibility of constraining the intrinsic dipole embedded in the kinematic dipole, in the presence of CMB spectral distortions.
We present the analysis of the halo bispectrum in redshift-space in terms of its multipoles, monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole, measured from a large set of simulations. We fit such measurements with a tree-level model in perturbation theory that depends on linear and nonlinear bias parameters as well as on the growth rate $f$ of density fluctuations. The likelihood analysis takes advantage of a very large set of mock catalogs, enabling a robust estimation of the covariance properties for all multipoles. We compare the numerical estimate of the covariance matrix to its Gaussian prediction …
We present a general framework for accurate spectral modeling of the low multipoles of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as observed in a boosted frame. In particular, we demonstrate how spectral measurements of the low multipoles can be used to separate the motion-induced dipole of the CMB from a possible intrinsic dipole component. In a moving frame, the leakage of an intrinsic dipole moment into the CMB monopole and quadrupole induces spectral distortions with distinct frequency functions that respectively peak at 337 GHz and 276 GHz. The leakage into the quadrupole moment also induces …
Fiber-fed multi-object spectroscopic surveys, with their ability to collect an unprecedented number of redshifts, currently dominate large-scale structure studies. However, physical constraints limit these surveys from successfully collecting redshifts from galaxies too close to each other on the focal plane. This ultimately leads to significant systematic effects on galaxy clustering measurements. Using simulated mock catalogs, we demonstrate that fiber collisions have a significant impact on the power spectrum, $P(k)$, monopole and quadrupole that exceeds sample variance at scales smaller th…
Recently, the power spectrum (PS) multipoles using the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12 (DR12) sample are analyzed \cite{160703150}. The based model for the analysis is the so-called TNS quasi-linear model and the analysis provides the multipoles up to the hexadecapole \cite{TNS}. Thus, one might be able to recover the real-space linear matter PS by using the combinations of multipoles to investigate the cosmology \cite{0407214}. We provide the analytic form of the ratio of quadrupole (hexadecapole) to monopole moments of the quasi-linear PS including the Fingers-…
The peculiar velocities of galaxies cause their redshift-space clustering to depend on the angle to the line-of-sight, providing a key test of gravitational physics on cosmological scales. These effects may be described using a multipole expansion of the clustering measurements. Focussing on Fourier-space statistics, we present a new analysis of the effect of the survey window function, and the variation of the line-of-sight across a survey, on the modelling of power spectrum multipoles. We determine the joint covariance of the Fourier-space multipoles in a Gaussian approximation, and indicate…
The motion of our solar system relative to the CMB rest frame leads to subtle distortions in the observed CMB sky map due to the aberration effect. Usually the corresponding peculiar velocity is determined from the CMB dipole but neglecting intrinsic dipole contributions. Here it is investigated whether certain invariant scalar measures, which are derived from first and second order covariant derivatives on the sphere, can detect the distortions caused by the aberration effect at high multipoles. This would in principle allow to disentangle the Doppler from intrinsic dipole contributions provi…
The standard theoretical description $Θ(\hat n)$ of the observed CMB temperature anisotropies is gauge-dependent. It is, however, well known that the gauge mode is limited to the monopole and the higher angular multipoles $Θ_l$ ($l\geq1$) are gauge-invariant. Several attempts have been made in the past to properly define the monopole fluctuation, but the resulting values of the monopole power $C_0$ are infinite due to the infrared divergences. The infrared divergences arise from the contribution of the uniform gravitational potential to the monopole fluctuation, in violation of the equivalence…
Radial redshift-space distortions due to peculiar velocities and other light-cone effects shape the maps we build of the Universe. We address the open question of their impact onto the monopole moment of the galaxy power spectrum, $P_0(k)$. Specifically, we use an upgraded numerical implementation of the LIGER method to generate $140$ mock galaxy density fields for a full Euclid-like survey and we measure $P_0(k)$ in each of them utilising a standard estimator. We compare the spectra obtained by turning on and off different effects. Our results show that wide-angle effects due to radial peculi…
As a generalization of our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95 043528 (2017)], in which an analytic model for the galaxy bispectrum in redshift space was developed on the basis of the halo approach, we here investigate its higher multipoles that have not been known so far. The redshift-space bispectrum includes the two variables $ω$ and $ϕ$ for the line-of-sight direction, and the higher multipole bispectra are defined by the coefficients in the expansion of the redshift-space bispectrum using the spherical harmonics. We find 6 new nonvanishing components out of $25$ total components up to $\ell=4$…
We discuss the possibility that the observed low-order multipole features of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) all originate in the termination shock (TS) region of the heliosheath that surrounds the solar system. If the intrinsic CMB spectrum is assumed to be a pure monopole (2.73K) then thermodynamic processes occurring within the plasma region of the TS could imprint the observed power spectrum of the low-order multipoles and their alignment (the so-called "axis of evil") onto this background isotropic CMB. Conditions are outlined for the geometric shape of the TS region. A ke…
We assess the performance of the multipole expansion formalism in the case of single-dish HI intensity mapping, including instrumental and foreground removal effects. This formalism is used to provide MCMC forecasts for a range of HI and cosmological parameters, including redshift space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski effect. We first determine the range of validity of our power spectrum modelling by fitting to simulation data, concentrating on the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole contributions. We then show that foreground subtraction effects can lead to severe biases in the determ…
We study the accuracy of several approximate methods for gravitational dynamics in terms of halo power spectrum multipoles and their estimated covariance matrix. We propagate the differences in covariances into parameter constrains related to growth rate of structure, Alcock-Paczynski distortions and biasing. We consider seven methods in three broad categories: algorithms that solve for halo density evolution deterministically using Lagrangian trajectories (ICE-COLA, Pinocchio and PeakPatch), methods that rely on halo assignment schemes onto dark-matter overdensities calibrated with a target N…
We present measurements of both scale- and time-dependent deviations from the standard gravitational field equations. These late-time modifications are introduced separately for relativistic and non-relativistic particles, by way of the parameters $G_{\rm matter}(k,z)$ and $G_{\rm light}(k,z)$ using two bins in both scale and time, with transition wavenumber $0.01$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and redshift 1. We emphasize the use of two dynamical probes to constrain this set of parameters, galaxy power spectrum multipoles and the direct peculiar velocity power spectrum, which probe fluctuations on different sca…
The line-of-sight peculiar velocities of galaxies contribute to their observed redshifts, breaking the translational invariance of galaxy clustering down to a rotational invariance around the observer. This becomes important when the line-of-sight direction varies significantly across a survey, leading to what are known as `wide angle' effects in redshift space distortions. Wide-angle effects will also be present in measurements of the momentum field, i.e. the galaxy density-weighted velocity field, in upcoming peculiar velocity surveys. In this work we study how wide-angle effects modify the …
Interacting dark energy models have been suggested as alternatives to the standard cosmological model, $Λ$CDM. We focus on a phenomenologically interesting class of dark scattering models that is characterised by pure momentum exchange between dark energy and dark matter. This model extends the parameter space with respect to $Λ$CDM by two parameters, $w$ and $A$, which define the dark energy equation of state and the strength of the coupling between dark energy and dark matter, respectively. In order to test non-standard cosmologies with Stage-IV galaxy clustering surveys, it is crucial to mo…
The measurement of the large scale distribution of neutral hydrogen in the late Universe, obtained with radio telescopes through the hydrogen 21cm line emission, has the potential to become a key cosmological probe in the upcoming years. We explore the constraining power of 21cm intensity mapping observations on the full set of cosmological parameters that describe the $Λ$CDM model. We assume a single-dish survey for the SKA Observatory and simulate the 21cm linear power spectrum monopole and quadrupole within six redshift bins in the range $z=0.25-3$. Forecasted constraints are computed numer…
We present a novel mathematical formalism that allows to easily compute the expected kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (kSZ) signal in intensity and polarization due to an anisotropic primordial Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We derive the expected intensity and polarization distortions in the direction of non-moving galaxy clusters and then we generalize our calculations for non-zero peculiar velocity. We show that, in the direction of moving clusters, low CMB multipoles impose intensity and polarization spectral distortions with different frequency dependences. The polarization signal primarily …
Scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) are attracting growing attention for probing extremely short-scale scalar perturbations via gravitational wave measurements. In this paper, we investigate the SIGWs from statistically anisotropic scalar perturbations, which are motivated in inflationary scenarios in the presence of, e.g., a vector field. While the ensemble average of the SIGW energy spectrum is isotropic for the standard statistically isotropic scalar perturbations, the statistical anisotropy in the source introduces the multipole moments of the differential SIGW energy spectrum. We c…
