Transport of subwavelength electromagnetic (EM) energy has been achieved through near-field coupling of highly confined surface EM modes supported by plasmonic nanoparticles, in a configuration usually staying on a two-dimensional (2D) substrate. Vertical transport of similar modes along the third dimension, on the other hand, can bring more flexibility in designs of functional photonic devices, but this phenomenon has not been observed in reality. In this paper, designer (or spoof) surface plasmon resonators (plasmonic meta-atoms) are stacked in the direction vertical to their individual planes in demonstrating vertical transport of subwavelength localized surface EM modes. Dispersion relation of this vertical transport is determined from coupled mode theory and is verified with near-field transmission spectrum and field mapping with a microwave near-field scanning stage. This work extends the near-field coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) theory into the vertical direction, and may find applications in novel three-dimensional slow light structures, filters, and photonic circuits.
Mid-infrared photonic modes of a periodically patterned metal-dielectric-metal structure have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. We have observed an anticrossing behaviour between cavity modes localized in the double-metal regions and the surface plasmon polariton, signature of a hybridisation between the two modes.
We analyze, by means of numerical simulations, transmission enhancements through sub- wavelength slits due to the presence of sets of plasmonic nanocylinders, placed near the exit of these apertures. Further, we extend this study to photonic crystals of dipolar plasmonic particles in front of an array of extraordinarily transmitting slits practiced in a metallic slab.
We study, and illustrate with numerical calculations, transmission enhancement by subwavelength 2D slits due to the dominant role played by the excitation of the eigenmodes of plasmonic cylinders when they are placed at the aperture entrance; and also due to reinforced and highly localized energy in the slit as a consequence of the formation of a nanojet. We show that, providing the illumination is chosen such that an aperture transmitting eigenmode is generated, the phenomenon is independent of whether or not the slit alone produces extraordinary transmission; although in the former case this…
We show the strength of the Fourier modal method (FMM) for numerically investigating the optical properties of vertical cavities including subwavelength gratings. Three different techniques for determining the resonance frequency and Q-factor of a cavity mode are compared. Based on that, the Fabry-Perot approach has been chosen due to its numerical efficiency. The computational uncertainty in determining the resonance frequency and Q-factor is investigated, showing that the uncertainty in the Q-factor calculation can be a few orders of magnitude larger than that in the resonance frequency calc…
Localized polymerization in subwavelength volumes using two photon dyes has now become a well-established method for fabrication of subwavelength structures. Unfortunately, the two photon absorption dyes used in such process are not only expensive but also proprietary. LTPO-L is an inexpensive, easily available single photon photoinitiator and has been used extensively for single photon absorption of UV light for polymerization. These polymerization volumes however are not localized and extend to micron size resolution having limited applications. We have exploited high quantum yield of radica…
We introduce a novel physical mechanism for achieving giant quality factors ($Q$-factors) in finite-length periodic arrays of subwavelength optical resonators. The underlying physics is based on interference between the band-edge mode and another standing mode in the array, and the formation of spatially localized states with dramatically suppressed radiative losses. We demonstrate this concept for an array of $N$ dipoles with simultaneous cancellation of multipoles up to $N$-th order and the $Q$ factor growing as $Q \propto N^α$, where $α\gtrsim 6.88$. Based on this finding, we propose a real…
A Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) perfectly vertical fibre-to-chip grating coupler is proposed and designed based on engineered subwavelength structures. The high directionality of the coupler is achieved by implementing step gratings to realize asymmetric diffraction and by applying effective index variation with auxiliary ultra-subwavelength gratings. The proposed structure is numerically analysed by using two-dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (2D FDTD) method and achieves 76% (-1.19 dB) coupling efficiency and 39 nm 1-dB bandwidth.
The electromagnetic response of subwavelength wires coated with a graphene monolayer illuminated by a linearly polarized plane waves is investigated. The results show that the scattering and extintion cross-sections of the coated wire can be dramatically enhanced when the incident radiation resonantly excites localized surface plasmons. The enhancements occur for p--polarized incident waves and for excitation frequencies that correspond to complex poles in the coefficients of the multipole expansion for the scattered field. By dynamically tuning the chemical potential of graphene, the spectral…
Topological photonic crystals (TPhCs) provide robust manipulation of light with built-in immunity to fabrication tolerances and disorder. Recently, it was shown that TPhCs based on weak topology with a dislocation inherit this robustness and further host topologically protected lower-dimensional localized modes. However, TPhCs with weak topology at optical frequencies have not been demonstrated so far. Here, we use scattering-type scanning near field optical microscopy to verify mid-bandgap zero-dimensional light localization close to 100 THz in a TPhC with nontrivial Zak phase and an edge dis…

We analyze the emergence of wiggling temporal localized states in a passively mode-locked Vertical External- Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser composed by a gain chip and a resonant saturable absorber mirror. We show that the wiggling instability stems from the interplay between the third-order dispersion induced by the micro-cavities and their frequency mismatch. The latter is identified as an experimentally crucial parameter defining the range of existence of stable emission. We reveal the homoclinic scenario underlying the wiggling phenomenon and we show how it allows to control the oscillation…
Temporal Localized States (TLSs) are individually addressable structures traveling in optical resonators. They can be used as bits of information and to generate frequency combs with tunable spectral density. We show that a pair of specially designed nonlinear mirrors, a 1/2 Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser and a Semiconductor Saturable Absorber, coupled in self-imaging conditions, can lead to the generation of such TLSs. Our results indicate how a conventional passive mode- locking scheme can be adapted to provide a robust and simple system emitting TLSs and it paves the way towards the…
We discuss optical forces exerted on particles, either dielectric or metallic, near a subwavelength slit illuminated by a photonic nanojet. We compare those cases in which the Mie resonances are or are not excited. The configurations on study are 2D, hence those particles are infinite cylinders and, in order to obtain extraordinary transmission, the illuminating beam is p-polarized. We show the different effects of these particle resonances on the optical forces: while whispering gallery modes under those illumination conditions weaken the force strength, this latter is enhanced by localized p…
Open subwavelength cylindrical resonators of finite height are widely used in various photonics applications. Circular cylindrical resonators are particularly important in nanophotonics, since they are relatively easy to fabricate and can be designed to exhibit different resonance effects. In this paper, an efficient and robust numerical method is developed for computing resonant modes of circular cylinders which may have a few layers and may be embedded in a layered background. The resonant modes are complex-frequency outgoing solutions of the Maxwell's equations with no sources or incident w…
Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have made indispensable contributions to the development of modern optoelectronic technologies. However, arbitrary beam shaping of VCSELs within a compact system still remains inaccessible till now. The emerging ultra-thin flat optical structures, namely metasurfaces, offer a powerful technique to manipulate electromagnetic fields with subwavelength spatial resolution. Here, we show that the monolithic integration of dielectric metasurfaces with VCSELs enables remarkable arbitrary control of the laser beam profiles, including self-collimation, B…
When wave scattering systems are subject to certain symmetries, resonant states may decouple from the far-field continuum; they remain localized to the structure and cannot be excited by incident waves from the far field. In this work, we use layer-potential techniques to prove the existence of such states, known as bound states in the continuum, in systems of subwavelength resonators. When the symmetry is slightly broken, this resonant state can be excited from the far field. Remarkably, this may create asymmetric (Fano-type) scattering behaviour where the transmission is fundamentally differ…
We study both theoretically and experimentally the electro-optical properties of vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystals (VADHFLC) with subwavelength pitch that are governed by the electrically induced optical biaxiality of the smectic helical structure. The key theoretical result is that the principal refractive indices of homogenized VADHFLC cells exhibit the quadratic nonlinearity and such behavior might be interpreted as the orientational "Kerr effect" caused by the electric-field-induced orientational distortions of the FLC helix. In our experiments, it has been ob…
The concept of optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) underpins the existence of strongly localized waves embedded into the radiation spectrum that can enhance the electromagnetic fields in subwavelength photonic structures. Early studies of optical BICs in waveguides and photonic crystals uncovered their topological properties, and the concept of quasi-BIC metasurfaces facilitated applications of strong light-matter interactions to biosensing, lasing, and low-order nonlinear processes. Here we employ BIC-empowered dielectric metasurfaces to generate efficiently high optical harmonics up…
A homogeneous negative permeability sphere can support magnetic localized surface plasmons (MLSPs). Generally, negative permeability materials are metamaterial (MM) structures exhibiting very deep subwavelength spatial scales, whose effects may be detrimental in the near-field for those applications based on effective medium approximations. We suggest to overcome this fundamental limitation by demonstrating analytically that the electromagnetic spatial distribution, associated to a MLSP resonance and excited by a near-field source, can be accurately reproduced outside the sphere by substitutin…
Using a random array of coupled metallic nanowires as a generic example of disordered plasmonic systems, we demonstrate that the structural disorder induces localization of light in these nanostructures at a deep-subwavelength scale. The ab initio analysis is based on solving the complete set of 3D Maxwell equations. We find that random variations of the radius of coupled plasmonic nanowires are sufficient to induce the Anderson localization (AL) of surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs), the size of these trapped modes being significantly smaller than the wavelength. Remarkably, the optical-gain c…
Metamaterials are known to exhibit a variety of electromagnetic properties non-existing in nature. We show that an all-dielectric (non-magnetic) system consisting of deep subwavelength, high permittivity resonant spheres possess effective negative magnetic permeability (dielectric permittivity being positive and small). Due to the symmetry of the electromagnetic wave equations in classical electrodynamics, localized "magnetic" plasmon resonances can be excited in a metasphere made of such metamaterial. This is theoretically demonstrated by the coupled-dipole approximation and numerically for r…
It has been recently demonstrated that textured closed surfaces which are made out of perfect electric conductors (PECs) can mimic highly localized surface plasmons (LSPs). Here, we propose an effective medium which can accurately model LSP resonances in a two-dimensional periodically decorated PEC cylinder. The accuracy of previous models is limited to structures with deep-subwavelength and high number of grooves. However, we show that our model can successfully predict the ultra-sharp LSP resonances which exist in structures with relatively lower number of grooves. Such resonances are not co…
We investigate a control of the motion of localized structures of light by means of delay feedback in the transverse section of a broad area nonlinear optical system. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous motion of a solitary localized structure that is stationary and stable in the absence of feedback. We focus our analysis on an experimentally relevant system namely the Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). In the absence of the delay feedback we present experimental evidence of stationary localized structures in a 80 $μ$m aperture VCSEL. The spontaneous formation of…
Vertical nanowires facilitate an innovative mechanism to channel the optical field in the orthogonal direction and act as a nanoscale light source. Subwavelength, vertically oriented nanowire platforms, both of plasmonic and semiconducting variety can facilitate interesting far field emission profiles and potentially carry orbital angular momentum states. Motivated by these prospects, in this letter, we show how a hybrid plasmonic - organic platform can be harnessed to engineer far field radiation. The system that we have employed is an organic nanowire made of diaminoanthroquinone grown on a …
Plasmonics offer an exciting way to mediate the interaction between light and matter, allowing strong field enhancement and confinement, large absorption and scattering at resonance. However, simultaneous realization of ultra-narrow band perfect absorption and electromagnetic field enhancement is challenging due to the intrinsic high optical losses and radiative damping in metals. Here, we propose an all-metal plasmonic absorber with an absorption bandwidth less than 8nm and polarization insensitive absorptivity exceeding 99%. Unlike traditional Metal-Dielectric-Metal configurations, we demons…
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
Vertical gold-nanogaps are created on microtubular cavities to explore the coupling between resonant light supported by the microcavities and surface plasmons localized at the nanogaps. Selective coupling of optical axial modes and localized surface plasmons critically depends on the exact location of the gold-nanogap on the microcavities which is conveniently achieved by rolling-up specially designed thin dielectric films into three dimensional microtube ring resonators. The coupling phenomenon is explained by a modified quasi-potential model based on perturbation theory. Our work reveals the…
We show experimentally and theoretically that localized pulses can be generated from an electrically biased $200\,μ$m multi-transverse mode Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser. The device is passively mode-locked using optical feedback from a distant Resonant Saturable Absorber Mirror and it is operated below threshold. We observe multistability between the off solution and a large variety of pulsating solutions with different number and arrangements of pulses per round-trip, thus indicating that the mode-locked pulses are localized, i.e. mutually independent. We show that a modulation of t…
The use of geometrical constraints opens many new perspectives in photonics and in fundamental studies of nonlinear waves. By implementing surface structures in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers as manifolds for curved space, we experimentally study the impacts of geometrical constraints on nonlinear wave localization. We observe localized waves pinned to the maximal curvature in an elliptical-ring, and confirm the reduction in the localization length of waves by measuring near and far field patterns, as well as the corresponding dispersion relation. Theoretically, analyses based on a di…
We present experimental and numerical studies of localized terahertz surface waves on a subwavelength-thick metamaterial film consisting of in-plane split-ring resonators. A simple and intuitive model is derived that describes the propagation of surface waves as guided modes in a waveguide filled with a Lorentz-like medium. The effective medium model allows to deduce the dispersion relation of the surface waves in excellent agreement with the numerical data obtained from 3-D full-wave calculations. Both the accuracy of the analytical model and the numerical calculations are confirmed by spectr…
Near-field optical microscopes with two independent tips for simultaneous excitation and detection can be essential tools for studying localized optical phenomena on the subwavelength scale. Here, we report on the implementation of a fully automated and robust dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), in which the excitation tip is stationary, while the detection tip automatically scans the surrounding area. To monitor and control the distance between the two probes, mechanical interactions due to shear forces are used. We experimentally investigate suitable scan parameters and f…
Light carries both spin and momentum. Spin-orbit interactions of light come into play at the subwavelength scale of nano-optics and nano-photonics, where they determine the behaviour of light. These phenomena, in which the spin affects and controls the spatial degrees of freedom of light, are attracting rapidly growing interest. Here we present results on the spin-momentum locking in the near field of metal nanostructures supporting localized surface resonances. These systems can confine light to very small dimensions below the diffraction limit, leading to a striking near-field enhancement. I…
Ultrashort laser pulses allows to deliver electromagnetic energy to matter causing its localized heating that can be used for both material removal via ablation/evaporation and drive interface chemical reactions. Here, we showed that both mentioned processes can be simultaneously combined within straightforward laser nanotexturing of Si wafer in functionalizing solution to produce a practically relevant metal-semiconductor surface nano-morphology. Such unique hybrid morphology represent deep-subwavelength Si LIPSSs with a extremely short period down to 70 nm with their high-aspect-ratio nanotr…
We present a family of localized radiation modes in multilayered periodic media, where in-phase superposition of p-polarized waves leads to radiative confinement around the beam axis. Excitation of surface plasmon polaritons yields an enhanced localization normally to the interfaces. On the other hand, the spectral filtering induced by the presence of bandgaps allows to achieve transverse superresolution on the interfaces. Subwavelength beamwidths along an infinitely long distance might potentially be obtained.
Transverse Kerker effect is known by the directional scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave perpendicular to the propagation direction with nearly suppression of both forward and backward scattering. Compared with plane waves, localized electromagnetic emitters are more general sources in modern nanophotonics. As a typical example, manipulating the emission direction of a quantum dot is of virtue importance for the investigation of on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing. Herein, we introduce the concept of transverse Kerker effect of localized electromagnetic sources ut…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, including artificial metamaterials, have been advanced to mold laser beams and antenna-mediated radiated waves. Here we propose an efficient method to control Ohmic losses inherent to natural ENZ materials by the assembly of subwavelength structures in a nonperiodic matrix constituting an ENZ metacoating. Implemented over plano-concave transparent substrates whose radius can be of only a few wavelengths, ENZ surface-relief elements demonstrate to adequately shape a plane wave into highly localized fields. Furthermore, our proposal provides an energy efficienc…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the optical properties of metal-dielectric-metal structures with patterned top metallic surfaces, in the THz frequency range. When the thickness of the dielectric slab is very small with respect to the wavelength, these structures are able to support strongly localized electromagnetic modes, concentrated in the subwavelength metal-metal regions. We provide a detailed analysis of the physical mechanisms which give rise to these photonic modes. Furthermore, our model quantitatively predicts the resonance positions and their coupling to free spa…
Immense optical field enhancement was predicted to occur for the Berreman mode in ultrathin films at frequencies in the vicinity of epsilon near zero (ENZ). Here, we report the first experimental proof of this prediction in the mid-infrared by probing the resonantly enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) at the longitudinal optic phonon frequency from a deeply subwavelength-thin aluminum nitride (AlN) film. Employing a transfer matrix formalism, we show that the field enhancement is completely localized inside the AlN layer, revealing that the observed SHG signal of the Berreman mode is sol…
Nanoscale generation of individual photons in confined geometries is an exciting research field aiming at exploiting localized electromagnetic fields for light manipulation. One of the outstanding challenges of photonic systems combining emitters with nanostructured media is the selective channelling of photons emitted by embedded sources into specific optical modes and their transport at distant locations in integrated systems. Here, we show that soft-matter nanofibers, electrospun with embedded emitters, combine subwavelength field localization and large broadband near-field coupling with lo…
Excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) of metal nanoparticles (NPs) residing on a flat metal film has attracted great attentions recently due to the enhanced electromagnetic (EM) fields found to be higher than the case of NPs on a dielectric substrate. In the present work, it is shown that even much higher enhancement of EM fields is obtained by exciting the LSPs through extended surface plasmons (ESPs) generated at the metallic film surface using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration. We show that the largest EM field enhancement and the highest surface-enhanced fluorescence intensit…
Localized electromagnetic modes and negligible Ohmic losses dictate the growing interest in subwavelength all-dielectric nanoparticles. Although an exhaustive volume of study dealt with interaction of all-dielectric nanostructures with free-space electromagnetic fields, their performance as integrated photonics elements remains untackled. We present an experimental study of optical coupling between a resonant subwavelength silicon nanodisk and a non-resonant silicon waveguide, as probed by third harmonic generation microscopy. By placing the nanodisks at different distances from the waveguide,…
