Hopfian $\ell$-groups, MV-algebras and AF C$^*$-algebras

An algebra is said to be hopfian if it is not isomorphic to a proper quotient of itself. We describe several classes of hopfian and of non-hopfian unital lattice-ordered abelian groups and MV-algebras. Using Elliott classification and $K_0$-theory, we apply our results to other related structures, notably the Farey-Stern-Brocot AF C$^*$-algebra and all its primitive quotients, including the Behnke-Leptin C$^*$-algebras $\mathcal A_{k,q}$.

Hopfian and Bassian algebras

A ring $A$ is called Hopfian if $A$ cannot be isomorphic to a proper homomorphic image $A/J$. $A$ is called Bassian if there cannot be an injection of $A$ into a proper homomorphic image $A/J$. We consider classes of Hopfian and Bassian rings, and tie representability of algebras and chain conditions on ideals to these properties. In particular, any semiprime algebra satisfying the ACC on semiprime ideals is Hopfian, and any semiprime affine PI-algebra over a field is Bassian.

A short proof that the free associative algebra is Hopfian

A short proof is given of the fact that various classes of algebras including the free associative algebra are Hopfian, i.e., every epimorphism is an automorphism. This further simplifies the Dicks-Lewin solution of the Jacobian conjecture for the free associative algebra.

The Moore-Penrose Inverses of Clifford Algebra $C\ell_{1,2}$

In this paper, we introduce a ring isomorphism between the Clifford algebra $C\ell_{1,2}$ and a ring of matrices. By such a ring isomorphism, we introduce the concept of the Moore-Penrose inverse in Clifford algebra $C\ell_{1,2}$. Using the Moore-Penrose inverse, we solve the linear equation $axb=d$ in $C\ell_{1,2}$. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for two numbers in $C\ell_{1,2}$ to be similar.

A point-free approach to canonical extensions of boolean algebras and bounded archimedean $\ell$-algebras

In \cite{BH20} an elegant choice-free construction of a canonical extension of a boolean algebra $B$ was given as the boolean algebra of regular open subsets of the Alexandroff topology on the poset of proper filters of $B$. We make this construction point-free by replacing the Alexandroff space of proper filters of $B$ with the free frame $\mathcal{L}$ generated by the bounded meet-semilattice of all filters of $B$ (ordered by reverse inclusion) and prove that the booleanization of $\mathcal{L}$ is a canonical extension of $B$. Free bounded archimedean $\ell$-algebras

We show that free objects on sets do not exist in the category $bal$ of bounded archimedean $\ell$-algebras. On the other hand, we introduce the category of weighted sets and prove that free objects on weighted sets do exist in $bal$. We conclude by discussing several consequences of this result.

Pseudo MV-algebras and Lexicographic Product

We study algebraic conditions when a pseudo MV-algebra is an interval in the lexicographic product of an Abelian unital $\ell$-group and an $\ell$-group that is not necessary Abelian. We introduce $(H,u)$-perfect pseudo MV-algebras and strong $(H,u)$-perfect pseudo MV-algebras, the latter ones will have a representation by a lexicographic product. Fixing a unital $\ell$-group $(H,u)$, the category of strong $(H,u)$-perfect pseudo MV-algebras is categorically equivalent to the category of $\ell$-groups.

Automorphisms of elliptic Poisson algebras

We describe the automorphism groups of elliptic Poisson algebras on polynomial algebras in three variables and give an explicit set of generators and defining relations for this group.

Biflatness of ${\ell}^1$-semilattice algebras

Building on an old result of Duncan and Namioka, we show that the ${\ell}^1$-convolution algebra of a semilattice $S$ is biflat precisely when $S$ is uniformly locally finite. The proof shows in passing that for such $S$ the convolution algebra is isomorphic to ${\ell}^1(S)$ with pointwise multiplication. At the end we sketch how these techniques may be extended to prove an analogous characterisation of biflatness for Clifford semigroup algebras.

On the algebra of elliptic curves

It is argued that a nonsingular elliptic curve admits a natural or fundamental abelian heap structure uniquely determined by the curve itself. It is shown that the set of complex analytic or rational functions from a nonsingular elliptic curve to itself is a truss arising from endomorphisms of this heap.
