We discuss properties of photons in extremely strong magnetic fields induced by the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We investigate the vacuum birefringence, the real-photon decay, and the photon splitting which are all forbidden in the ordinary vacuum, but become possible in strong magnetic fields. These effects potentially give rise to anisotropies in photon and dilepton spectra.
When dense high-energy lepton bunches collide, the beam particles can experience rest-frame electromagnetic fields which greatly exceed the QED critical one. Here it is demonstrated that beamstrahlung efficiently converts lepton energy to high-energy photons in this so-called supercritical QED regime, as the single-photon emission spectrum exhibits a pronounced peak close to the initial lepton energy. It is also shown that the observation of this high-energy peak in the photon spectrum requires one to mitigate multiple photon emissions during the interaction. Otherwise, the photon recoil induc…
This paper investigates the transverse momentum broadening effect for electromagnetic production of dileptons in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions accompanied by nuclear dissociation. The electromagnetic dissociation probability of nuclei for different neutron multiplicities is estimated, which could serve as a centrality definition (i.e. impact parameter estimate) in ultra-peripheral collisions. In the framework of lowest-order QED, the acoplanarity of dilepton pairs is calculated for different neutron emission scenarios in ultra-peripheral collisions, indicating significant impact-parame…
The scenario of spontaneous positron emission, caused by the supercritical Coulomb source with charge $Z$ and size $R$, is explored in essentially non-perturbative approach with emphasis on the vacuum energy $\mathcal{E}_{VP}$\footnote{Throughout the paper the abbreviation "VP"\, stands for "vacuum polarization"\,.}, considered as a function of $R$ with fixed $Z>Z_{cr,1}\simeq 170$. It is shown that in the supercritical region the behavior of $\mathcal{E}_{VP}(R)$ turns out to be quite different in dependence on the value of the Coulomb charge $Z$. In particular, spontaneous emission becomes a…
It is conjectured that all perturbative approaches to quantum electrodynamics (QED) break down in the collision of a high-energy electron beam with an intense laser, when the laser fields are boosted to `supercritical' strengths far greater than the critical field of QED. As field strengths increase toward this regime, cascades of photon emission and electron-positron pair creation are expected, as well as the onset of substantial radiative corrections. Here we identify the important role played by the collision angle in mitigating energy losses to photon emission that would otherwise prevent …
In slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm cr} \approx 173$, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. Detection of the spontaneous emission of positrons would be the direct evidence of this fundamental phenomenon. However, the spontaneous emission is generally masked by the dynamical positron emission, which is induced by a strong time-dependent electric field created by the colliding nuclei. In our recent paper [I.A. Maltsev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 113401 (2019)] it has…
A strong electromagnetic field polarizes the vacuum and in the presence of an electric field creates pairs of a charged particle and its anti-particle. Magnetars, highly magnetized neutron stars with magnetic field comparable to or greater than the Schwinger field, give a significant amount of the vacuum polarization and vacuum birefringence and the induced electric field can create the electron-positron pairs, which are strong field quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. In this paper, we use a closed formula for the one-loop effective action in the presence of a supercritical magnetic fiel…
We calculate for the first time cross sections for single and central diffractive as well as exclusive diffractive production of dilepton pairs in proton-proton collisions. Several differential distributions are shown. The inclusive diffractive processes are calculated using diffractive parton distributions extracted from the analysis of diffractive structure function and dijet production at HERA. We find that the inclusive single-diffractive Drell-Yan process is by about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than ordinary Drell-Yan process. The central-diffractive processes are smaller by one order o…
The vast majority of QED results are obtained in relatively weak fields and so in the framework of perturbation theory. However, forthcoming laser facilities providing extremely high fields can be used to enter not-yet-studied regimes. Here, a scheme is proposed that might be used to reach a supercritical regime of radiation reaction or even the fully non-perturbative regime of quantum electrodynamics. The scheme considers the collision of a 100 GeV-class electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense electromagnetic pulse. To reach these supercritical regimes, it is unavoidable to use a…
We present a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on the NNPDF2.3 set, which includes a photon PDF, and QED contributions to parton evolution. We describe the implementation of the combined QCD+QED evolution in the NNPDF framework. We then provide a first determination of the full set of PDFs based on deep-inelastic scattering data and LHC data for W and Z/gamma* Drell-Yan production, using leading-order QED and NLO or NNLO QCD. We compare the ensuing NNPDF2.3QED PDF set to the older MRST2004QED set. We perform a preliminary investigation of the phenomenological implications of N…
Since the invention of chirped pulse amplification, which was recognized by a Nobel prize in physics in 2018, there has been a continuing increase in available laser intensity. Combined with advances in our understanding of the kinetics of relativistic plasma, studies of laser-plasma interactions are entering a new regime where the physics of relativistic plasmas is strongly affected by strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes, including hard photon emission and electron-positron ($e^+$-$e^-$) pair production. This coupling of quantum emission processes and relativistic collective …
The level of precision achieved by the experimental measurements at the LHC requires the inclusion of higher order electroweak effects to the processes of $ pp $ scattering. In particular the photon-induced process $ γγ\to \ell^+\ell^- $ make a significant contribution ($ \sim 10 \%$) to the dilepton invariant mass distribution. To evaluate the cross-section of this process one need to know the parton distribution function (PDF) of the photon in the proton $ γ(x,μ^2) $. The aim of the current study is to investigate the impact of QED corrections on PDFs and describe the implementation of QED-m…
We explore the effects of Photon Induced (PI) production of a dilepton final state in the Large Hadron Collider environment. Using QED Parton Distribution Function (PDF) sets we can treat the photons as real partons inside the protons and compare their yield directly to that of the Drell-Yan (DY) process. In particular, we concentrate on an error analysis of the two mechanisms. In order to do so, we use the NNPDF set, which comes with a set of replicas to estimate the systematic PDF error. On the one hand, we find that the PI contribution becomes dominant over DY above a dilepton invariant mas…
We investigate different methods to incorporate the effect of photons in hard processes. We compare two different approaches used for calculating cross sections for two-photon $p p \to l^+ l^- X$ process. In one of the approaches photon is treated as a collinear parton in the proton. In the second approach recently proposed a $k_T$-factorization method is used. We discuss how results of the collinear parton model depend on the initial condition for the QCD evolution and discuss an approximate treatment where photon is excluded from the combined QCD-QED evolution. We demonstrate that it is not …
The properties of the QED-vacuum energy $\hbox{$\cal E $}_{VP}$ under Coulomb super-criticality condition $Z>Z_{cr,1}$ are explored in essentially non-perturbative approach. It is shown that in the supercritical region $\hbox{$\cal E $}_{VP}$ is the decreasing function of the Coulomb source parameters, resulting in decay into the negative range as $\sim - Z^4/R$. The conditions, under which the emission of vacuum positrons can be unambiguously detected on the nuclear conversion pairs background, are also discussed. In particular, for a super-critical dummy nucleus with charge $Z$ and $R(Z) \si…
Achieving the highest precision for theoretical predictions at the LHC requires the calculation of hard-scattering cross-sections that include perturbative QCD corrections up to (N)NNLO and electroweak (EW) corrections up to NLO. Parton distribution functions (PDFs) need to be provided with matching accuracy, which in the case of QED effects involves introducing the photon parton distribution of the proton, $xγ(x,Q^2)$. In this work a determination of the photon PDF from fits to recent ATLAS measurements of high-mass Drell-Yan dilepton production at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV is presented. This analysis…
We investigate the $P_T$-broadening effects in dilepton production through photon-photon scattering in heavy ion collisions. The QED multiple interaction effects with the medium is found to be consistent with a recent observation of low transverse momentum lepton pair from ATLAS collaboration at the LHC. We further comment on the magnetic effects and point out a number of ways to disentangle these two mechanisms. In particular, the rapidity dependence of the $P_T$-broadening effects provide a unique probe to the magnetic effects.
Exclusive photoproduction of dileptons, gamma p ->l+ l- p, will be measured in ultraperipheral collisions at LHC. The mechanism where the lepton pair comes from a heavy timelike photon radiated from a quark interferes with the pure QED process gamma gamma ->l+ l- As an analog of deeply virtual Compton scattering, this timelike Compton scattering is a way to study generalized parton distributions in the nucleon or the nucleus. High energy kinematics will enable to focus on gluon distributions. Nuclear effects may be scrutinized in heavy ion collisions.
In this work we evaluate the long-distance QED contributions, induced by the magnetic-dipole corrections to the final charged leptons, on the $B$ meson decay widths $B\to (K,K^*) \ell^+\ell^-$ and ratios $R_{K,K^*}=Γ(B\to (K,K^*) μ^+μ^-)/Γ(B\to (K,K^*) e^+e^-)$, as well as on $R^τ_{K,K^*}$ (with $μ$ replaced by the $τ$ lepton). QED long-distance contributions induced by the Coulomb potential corrections (Fermi-Sommerfeld factors) were also included. Corresponding corrections to the inclusive decay widths of $B\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$, with $\ell=e,μ,τ$, are also analyzed for completeness. The mag…
In-medium interactions of a particle in a hot plasma are considered in the framework of thermal field theory. The formalism to calculate gauge invariant rates for photon and dilepton production from the medium is given. In the application to a QED plasma, astrophysical consequences are pointed out. The photon production rate from strongly interacting quarks in the quark--gluon plasma, which might be formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, is calculated in the previously unaccessible regime of photon energies of the order of the plasma temperature. For temperatures below the chiral ph…
We discuss the effect of the Photon Initiated (PI) process on the dilepton channel at the LHC. Adopting various QED PDF sets, we evaluate the contribution produced by two resolved photons which is not included in the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA). We compare the PI central value as predicted by the CTEQ, MRST and NNPDF collaborations. With the NNPDF2.3QED set of replicas we also estimate the PDF uncertainties on the PI central value. We show the effect of the inclusion of the PI contribution and its PDF uncertainties on neutral heavy Z'-boson searches. We explore the two scenarios of n…
