In this paper, we study transport features of a one-dimensional beam-plasma system in the presence of multiple resonances. As a model description of the general problem of a warm energetic particle beam, we assume $n$ cold supra-thermal beams and investigate the self-consistent evolution in the presence of the complete spectrum of nearly degenerate Langmuir modes. A qualitative transport estimation is obtained by computing the Lagrangian Coherent Structures of the system on given temporal scales. This leads to the splitting of the phase space into regions where the local transport processes are relatively faster. The general theoretical framework is applied to the case of the nonlinear dynamics of two cold beams, for which numerical simulation results are illustrated and analyzed.
The first linear global electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle simulation on the excitation of toroidicity induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) by energetic particles is reported. With an increase in the energetic particle pressure, the TAE frequency moves down into the lower continuum.
Motivated by rapid advances in plasma based accelerators, we propose a simple mechanism for the production of highly collimated quasi monochromatic electrons beams. By considering Compton scattering of electrons (in the plasma) with virtual photons -- through an effective interaction --- we demonstrate angular collimation with a divergence less than 3 mrad quasi mono-energetic nature of the beam and an energy gain of O (1 GeV/cm), in laser induced accelerators.
According to the standard scenario of plasma emission, escaping radiations are generated by the nonlinear development of the kinetic bump-on-tail instability driven by a single beam of energetic electrons interacting with plasmas. Here we conduct fully-kinetic electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate plasma emission induced by the ring-distributed energetic electrons interacting with overdense plasmas. Efficient excitations of the fundamental (F) and harmonic (H) emissions are revealed with radiation mechanism(s) different from the standard scenario: (1) The primary modes ac…
The importance of the beam-plasma system in fusion physics relies on its capability in reproducing relevant features of energetic particles interacting with the Alfvénic spectrum. We analyze here a multi-level hierarchy of the Vlasov-Poisson induced transport in order to characterize the underlying physical processes.
Generation of anomalously energetic suprathermal electrons was observed in simulation of a high- voltage dc discharge with electron emission from the cathode. An electron beam produced by the emission interacts with the nonuniform plasma in the discharge via a two-stream instability. Efficient energy transfer from the beam to the plasma electrons is ensured by the plasma nonuniformity. The electron beam excites plasma waves whose wavelength and phase speed gradually decrease towards anode. The short waves near the anode accelerate plasma bulk electrons to suprathermal energies. The sheath near…
In this paper we present the results of the spectral studies of erosive discharge with tin alloy electrodes and of the generated JFs, and experimentally determine internal energy of JFs using the calorimetric technique.
The transport of energetic electrons is sensitive to magnetic perturbations. By using 3D numerical simulation of test particle drift orbits we show that the transport of untrapped electrons through an open region with magnetic perturbations cannot be described by a diffusive process. Based on our test particle simulations, we propose a model that leads to an exponential loss of particles.
Low-temperature plasma (LTP) processing is a green and flexible food processing technology with only known limitation of low energy efficiency. Three established fundamental mechanisms of plasma food processing includes: i) physical damage to membranes and internal cellular components due to bombardment of energetic ions: ii) radicals and charged species led chemical reactions: iii) and radiation-induced modifications. In this investigation, we present a new mechanism of generation and extraction of energetic $N_2$ neutrals from glow discharge plasmas for efficient food processing. For nitroge…
A charge bunch moving in a plasma can excite a variety of linear and nonlinear waves in the form of trailing wakes, fore-wake shocks and precursor solitons. These structures can further interact with the background plasma to create secondary effects that can serve as signatures of the passage of the charge bunch. Using particle-in-cell simulations we investigate in detail the dynamics of a plasma system that is being traversed by an energetic charged ion bunch. Using two different shapes of the charge source, namely, an idealized one dimensional line source and a two dimensional thin rectangul…
We have studied the Rogue wave existence and propagation in Ion-acoustic mode for the highly energetic case using kappa distributed electrons in accordance with the Korteweg de Vries equation that is modified KdV and extended KdV equation. We have used reductive perturbation method. We first examined the linear dispersive behaviour in Ionacoustic mode. Obtaining the Nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we simulated Rogue wave and examined dynamics of it, and its response to small perturbations. We discussed the possibility of generation of Rogue wave as well as the stability of this against various…
Plasma instabilities are the non-linear processes occurring in plasmas when excess energy gets accumulated in a plasma system which is unable to hold it. There are almost 60 known plasma instabilities in nature.
The stimulated Raman scattering instability in a fully degenerate electron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations. We demonstrated that the instability develops for weakly as well as strongly relativistic degenerate plasma. It is shown that in the field of strong radiation relativistically degenerate plasma effectively responses as in the case of weak degeneracy.
In plasmas with electron drift (current) relative to static ions, the ion acoustic wave is subject to the kinetic instability which takes place if the directed electron speed exceeds the ion acoustic speed. The instability threshold becomes different in the case of one quasi-neutral electron-ion plasma propagating through another static quasi-neutral (target) plasma. The threshold velocity of the propagating plasma may be well below the ion acoustic speed of the static plasma. Such a current-less instability may frequently be expected in space and astrophysical plasmas.
In this letter, it is reported that the first experimental results are associated with the GAM induced by energetic electrons (eEGAM) in HL-2A Ohmic plasma. The energetic-electrons are generated by parallel electric fields during magnetic reconnection associated with tearing mode (TM). The eEGAM localizes in the core plasma, i.e. in the vicinity of q=2 surface, and is very different from one excited by the drift-wave turbulence in the edge plasma. The analysis indicated that the eEGAM is provided with the magnetic components, whose intensities depend on the poloidal angles, and its mode number…
A general theoretical framework for investigating nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures is presented in this work. It is then, more specifically, applied to the limit where the nonlinear evolution time scale is smaller or comparable to the wave-particle trapping period. In this limit, both theoretical and numerical simulation studies show that non-adiabatic frequency chirping and phase locking could lead to secular resonant particle transport on meso- or macro-scales. The interplay between mode structures and resonant particles then provides the crucial ingredient to properly unde…
The filamentation instability of the electromagnetic (EM) beam in an underdense plasma with high level of degeneracy is examined by means of the momentum equation, continuity equation and Maxwell's equations. It has been demonstrated that the instability develops for weakly as well as strongly relativistic degenerate plasma and arbitrary strong amplitude of EM beams.
The two stage electron acceleration model [arXiv: 1512.02411 and arXiv: 1512.07546] is extended to the study of laser magnetized-plasmas interactions at relativistic intensities and in the presence of large-scale preformed plasmas. It is shown that the cut-off electron kinetic energy is controllable by the external magnetic field strength and directions. Further studies indicate that for a right-hand circularly polarized laser (RH-CP) of intensity $10^{20}\ \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ and pre-plasma scale length $10\ μ\text{m}$, the cut-off electron kinetic energy can be as high as $500\ \text{MeV}$…
Energetic particles produced by neutral beams are observed to excite energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) in tokamaks. We study the effects of anisotropy of distribution function of the energetic particles on the excitation of such instabilities with ORB5, a gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code. Numerical results are shown for linear electrostatic simulations with ORB5. The growth rate is found to be sensitively dependent on the phase-space shape of the distribution function. The behavior of the instability is qualitatively compared to the theoretical analysis of dispersion r…
The three-dimensional instability of two coupled electromagnetic waves in an unmagnetized plasma is investigated theoretically and numerically. In the regime of two-plasmon decay, where one pump wave frequency is approximately twice the electron plasma frequency, we find that the coupled pump waves give rise to enhanced instability with wave vectors between those of the two beams. In the case of ion parametric decay instability, where the pump wave decays into one Langmuir wave and one ion acoustic wave, the instability regions are added with no distinct amplification. Our investigation can be…
We present the first observation of an instability in an expanding ultracold plasma. We observe periodic emission of electrons from an ultracold plasma in weak, crossed magnetic and electric fields, and a strongly perturbed electron density distribution in electron time-of-flight projection images. We identify this instability as a high-frequency electron drift instability due to the coupling between the electron drift wave and electron cyclotron harmonic, which has large wavenumbers corresponding to wavelengths close to the electron gyroradius.
A generalized linear dispersion relation of electromagnetic slab universal modes is derived, taking into account arbitrary ion charge state, electron finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects, and Debye shielding effects. As a consequence, it provides more accurate predictions and is applicable to a wider range of plasmas. We find that electron FLR effects have a weakly stabilizing effect on the slab universal instability in electron-ion plasma, while Debye shielding strongly stabilizes this instability when $λ_D$ approaches $ρ_i$ ($λ_D$ is the Debye length and $ρ_i$ is the ion gyro-radius). In parti…
A new quasi-neutral model describing the Weibel instability of a high-current relativistic beam propagating through a resistive plasma is developed. It treats beam electrons as kinetic particles, and ambient plasma as a non-relativistic fluid. For a finite-temperature beam, a new class of negative energy magneto-sound waves is identified, which can possess negative energy. Their growth due to collisional dissipation in the cold return current destabilizes the beam-plasma system even for high beam temperatures. We perform detailed two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of…
It is shown that the transport in low temperature, collisional, bounded plasma is enhanced by instabilities at high magnetic field. While the magnetic field confines the electrons in a stable plasma, the instability completely destroys the confinement such that the transport becomes independent of the magnetic field in the highly magnetized limit. An analytical expression of the instability-enhanced collision frequency is proposed, based on a magnetic field independent edge-to-center density ratio.
A new analytical nonmodal approach to investigate the plasma instabilities driven by the sheared current is presented and applied to the analysis of the linear evolution of the Simon-Hoh (S-H) instability of a plasma in the inhomogeneous electric field. We found analytically strong nonmodal growth for this instability which is missed completely in the normal modes analysis but dominates the normal mode growth when the shearing rate of the current velocity is above the growth rate of the S-H instability with uniform current. It includes also the nonmodal growth for the subcritical perturbations…
Capacitively coupled plasmas (CCP) comprise one of the main tool in active use in the plasma processing industry. However, increasing the driving frequency and electrode size is limited by the emergence of plasma radial nonuniformity detrimental for applications. The nonuniformity is caused by interactions of surface waves natural to the plasma-filled reactor with electrons of the plasma, leading to the complex electron energization and ionization dynamics. Using a self-consistent fully electromagnetic energy- and charge-conserving implicit particle-in-cell code ECCOPIC2M, we demonstrate that …
We measured, using Petawatt-level pulses, the average ion energy and neutron yield in high-intensity laser interactions with molecular clusters as a function of laser intensity. The interaction volume over which fusion occurred (1-10 mm^3) was larger than previous investigations, owing to the high laser power. Possible effects of prepulses were examined by implementing a pair of plasma mirrors. Our results show an optimum laser intensity for the production of energetic deuterium ions both with and without the use of the plasma mirrors. We measured deuterium plasmas with 14 keV average ion ener…
We revisit the applications of quasi-linear theory as a paradigmatic model for weak plasma turbulence and the associated bump-on-tail problem. The work, presented here, is built around the idea that large-amplitude or strongly shaped beams do not relax through diffusion only and that there exists an intermediate time scale where the relaxations are convective (ballistic-like). We cast this novel idea in the rigorous form of a self-consistent nonlinear dynamical model, which generalizes the classic equations of the quasi-linear theory to "broad" beams with internal structure. We also present nu…
The physics governing electron acceleration by a relativistically intense laser are not confined to the critical density surface, they also pervade the sub-critical plasma in front of the target. Here, particles can gain many times the ponderomotive energy from the overlying laser, and strong fields can grow. Experiments using a high contrast laser and a prescribed laser pre-pulse demonstrate that development of the pre-plasma has an unexpectedly strong effect on the most energetic, super-ponderomotive electrons. Presented 2D particle-in-cell simulations reveal how strong, voluminous magnetic …
An analytical model for the self-modulation instability of a long relativistic proton bunch propagating in uniform plasmas is developed. The self-modulated proton bunch resonantly excites a large amplitude plasma wave (wake field), which can be used for acceleration of plasma electrons. Analytical expressions for the linear growth rate and the number of exponentiations are given. We use the full three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to study the beam self-modulation and the transition to the nonlinear stage. It is shown that the self-modulation of the proton bunch competes with …
A small fraction of ions can destabilize the diocotron mode (off axis rotation) of an electron plasma confined in a Malmberg-Penning trap. In this paper a set of experimental measurements performed in the ELTRAP device on the ions induced diocotron instability is presented. In particular, the dependence of the instability on the electron energy has been analyzed, by heating the plasma with a RF burst or by injecting into the trap electrons with different energies. A simple experimental technique to limit the instability is also described.
The production of weakly relativistic plasma by microwave electric field with circular polarization has been studied. Electron distribution function obtained for this produced plasma and shown that it is non-equilibrium and anisotropic. It is shown that produced plasma accelerated on direction of propagation microwave electric field. The electron velocity on this direction strongly depends on electron origination phase during ionization and microwave electric field phase and it s amplitude. The dielectric tensor obtained for this plasma and the weibel instability studied for it.
Low frequency longitudinal wave instability in magnetized high correlation dusty plasmas is investigated. The dust charging relaxation is taken into account. It is found that the instablity of wave is determined significantly by the frequency of wave, the dust charging relaxation, the shear viscosity and viscoelastic relaxation time, the coupling parameter of high correlation of dust as well the strength of magnetic field.
Interaction of an intense electron beam with a finite-length, inhomogeneous plasma is investigated numerically. The plasma density profile is maximal in the middle and decays towards the plasma edges. Two regimes of the two-stream instability are observed. In one regime, the frequency of the instability is the plasma frequency at the density maximum and plasma waves are excited in the middle of the plasma. In the other regime, the frequency of the instability matches the local plasma frequency near the edges of the plasma and the intense plasma oscillations occur near plasma boundaries. The la…
The influence of viscosity gradient (due to shear flow) on low frequency collective modes in strongly coupled dusty plasma is analyzed. It is shown that for a well known viscoelastic plasma model, the velocity shear dependent viscosity leads to an instability of the shear mode. The inhomogeneous viscous force and velocity shear coupling supply the free energy for the instability. The combined strength of shear flow and viscosity gradient wins over any stabilizing force and makes the shear mode unstable. Implication of such a novel instability and its applications are briefly outlined.
This paper studies the propagation of intense laser in plasmas in weak relativistic region($0.1<a_0^2<0.5$) using the quasi-periodic approximation. Effective Lorentz factor and density wave effects are calculated in detail. The relativistic correction on stimulated Brillouin instability is investigated in the rest parts. The coupled dispersion relations of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering(SBS) are obtained and investigated numerically.
Current models predict the hose instability to crucially limit the applicability of plasma-wakefield accelerators. By developing an analytical model which incorporates the evolution of the hose instability over long propagation distances, this work demonstrates that the inherent drive-beam energy loss, along with an initial beam energy spread detune the betatron oscillations of beam electrons, and thereby mitigate the instability. It is also shown that tapered plasma profiles can strongly reduce initial hosing seeds. Hence, we demonstrate that the propagation of a drive beam can be stabilized …
Temporal evolution of the inhomogeneous energy density driven instability (IEDDI) is examined in presence of a nonuniform transverse dc electric field in collisional magnetized plasma cylinder. Using experimentally known parameters relevant to IEDDI, we have estimated the growth rate for $ν$=1, 2 and 3 nonlocal eigenmodes.
In magnetized plasma turbulence, the couplings of perpendicular spatial scales that arise due to the nonlinear interactions are analyzed from the perspective of the free-energy exchanges. The plasmas considered here, with appropriate ion or electron adiabatic electro-neutrality responses, are described by the gyrokinetic formalism in a toroidal magnetic geometry. Turbulence develops due to the electrostatic fluctuations driven by temperature gradient instabilities, either ion temperature gradient (ITG) or electron temperature gradient (ETG). The analysis consists in decomposing the system into…
We report a first principles study of the coupled evolution of energetic ions, background majority ions, electrons and electromagnetic fields in magnetised plasma during the linear phase of the lower hybrid drift instability. A particle-in-cell code, with one spatial and three velocity space co-ordinates, is used to analyse the evolving distribution of a drifting ring-beam population of energetic protons in physical space and gyrophase angle. This analysis is carried out for plasma parameters that approximate to edge conditions in large tokamaks, in a scenario that is motivated by observations…
Symmetric electron-positron plasmas in inhomogeneous magnetic fields are intrinsically subject to interchange instability and transport. Scaling relations for the propagation velocity of density blob perturbations relevant to transport in isothermal magnetically confined electron-positron plasmas are deduced, including damping effects when Debye lengths are large compared to Larmor radii. The relations are verified by nonlinear full-F gyrofluid computations. Results are in favour of sufficient magnetic confinement for planned electron-positron plasma experiments. The model is generalised to ot…
Propagation of charged particle beams in background plasma as a method of space charge neutralization has been shown to achieve a high degree of charge and current neutralization and therefore enables nearly ballistic propagation and focusing of charged particle beams. Correspondingly, use of plasmas for propagation of charged particle beams has important applications for transport and focusing of intense particle beams in inertial fusion and high energy density laboratory plasma physics. However, the streaming of beam ions through a background plasma can lead to development of the two-stream …
We investigate the role of thermal instability, arising from radiative cooling of an optically thin, dusty plasma, by linear stability analysis. The corresponding isobaric stability condition for condensation mode is found to be modified significantly by the degree of ionization and concentration of finite sized, relatively heavy, and negatively charged dust particles. It has been shown that though the fundamental wave mode is similar in nature to the one in absence of dust particles, a new dust-wave mode can propagate in such a plasma. It is conjectured that the presence of negatively charged…
A hypothesis on the physical mechanism generating the heartbeat instability in complex (dusty) plasmas is presented. It is suggested that the instability occurs due to the periodically repeated critical transformation on the boundary between the microparticle-free area (void) and the complex plasma. The critical transformation is supposed to be analogous to the formation of the sheath in the vicinity of an electrode. The origin of the transformation is the loss of the electrons and ions on microparticles surrounding the void. We have shown that this hypothesis is consistent with the experiment…
The common feature of sheared flows of an ideal fluid and plasma in magnetic field is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This instability is described by identical equations in mentioned two cases. The wave equation for the eigenmodes in the plasma obtained by the kinetic method in the long-wave limit coincides with the Rayleigh equation known for an ideal fluid. Velocity profile with a transition layer of finite width is considered. Odd modes are investigated. Localized velocity shear layer is the source of perturbations propagating beyond the transition layer. The conditions of localization o…
This paper analyzes a situation which is common for magnetized technical plasmas such as dc magnetron discharges and HiPIMS systems, where secondary electrons enter the plasma after being accelerated in the cathode fall and encounter a nearly uniform bulk. An analytic calculation of the distribution function of hot electrons is presented; these are described as an initially monoenergetic beam that slows down by Coulomb collisions with a Maxwellian distribution of bulk (cold) electrons, and by inelastic collisions with neutrals. Although this analytical solution is based on a steady-state assum…
The beam hosing instability is analyzed theoretically for a witness beam in the quasi-linear regime of plasma accelerators. In this regime, the hosing instability saturates, even for a monoenergetic bunch, at a level much less than standard scalings predict. Analytic expressions are derived for the saturation distance and amplitude and are in agreement with numerical results. Saturation is due to the natural head-to-tail variations in the focusing force, including the self-consistent transverse beam loading.
