In this article we introduce a new method for constructing implicit symplectic maps using special symplectic manifolds and Liouvillian forms. This method extends, in a natural way, the method of generating functions to 1-forms which are globally defined on the symplectic manifold. The maps constructed by this method, are related to the symplectic Cayley's transformation and belong to a continuous space of dimension n(2n+1). Applying the implicit map to the discrete Hamilton equations we obtain the generalized symplectic Euler scheme. We show the relations of the elements of this family with other discrete symplectic mapping, in particular 1) with the mappings obtained by generating functions of type I, II, and III and IV; 2) with the symplectic Euler methods A and B; and 3) with the mid-point rule. Moreover, we show the corresponding symplectic diffeomorphisms and their Liouvillian forms on the product symplectic manifold. We illustrate the details of the method in constructing two different families of implicit symplectic maps for $n=1$. This is a geometrical method which overcomes the difficulties of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory and generating functions.
In this article we introduce a low order implicit symplectic integrator designed to follow the Hamiltonian flow as close as possible. This integrator is obtained by the method of Liouvillian forms and does not require particular hypotheses on the Hamiltonian. The numerical scheme introduced in this paper is a modification of the symplectic mid-point rule, it is symmetric and it is obtained by an isotopy of the deformation of the exact Hamiltonian flow to the straight line passing by two consecutive points of the discretized flow. This isotopy generates an alternative vector field on the flow l…
The use of Liouvillian forms to obtain symplectic maps for constructing numerical integrators is a natural alternative to the method of generating functions, and provides a deeper understanding of the geometry of this procedure. Using Liouvillian forms we study the generating function introduced by Poincaré (1899) and its associated symplectic map. We show that in this framework, Poincaré's generating function does not correspond to the symplectic mid-point rule, but to the identity map. We give an interpretation of this result based on the original framework constructed by Poincaré.
We use a quaternionic structure on the product of two symplectic manifolds for relating Liouvillian forms with linear symplectic maps obtained by the symplectic Cayley's transformation.
We adapt the notion of generating functions for lagrangian submanifolds to symplectic microgeometry. We show that a symplectic micromorphism always admits a global generating function. As an application, we describe hamiltonian flows as special symplectic micromorphisms whose local generating functions are the solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We obtain a purely categorical formulation of the temporal evolution in classical mechanics.
We provide a simple proof of a theorem due to Nancy Hingston, asserting that symplectically degenerate maxima of any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of the standard symplectic 2d-torus are non-isolated contractible periodic points or their action is a non-isolated point of the average-action spectrum. Our argument is based on generating functions.
An afinne-invariant view of generating functions of symplectic transformations of an affine symplectic space is discussed. More generally, it works for symmetric symplectic spaces. The note is completely elementary, but it yields some nice pictures.
Quite recently, McDuff showed that the existence of a symplectic embedding of one four-dimensional ellipsoid into another can be established by comparing their corresponding sequences of ECH capacities. In this note we show that these sequences can be encoded in a generating function, which gives several new equivalent formulations of McDuff's theorem.
K. Cieliebak, H. Hofer, J. Latschev, and F. Schlenk (CHLS) posed the problem of finding a minimal generating set for the (symplectic) capacities on a given symplectic category. We show that if the category contains a certain one-parameter family of objects, then every countably Borel-generating set of (normalized) capacities has cardinality (strictly) bigger than the continuum. This appears to be the first result regarding the problem of CHLS, except for two results of D. McDuff about the category of ellipsoids in dimension 4. We also prove that every finitely differentiably generating set of …
In this article we introduce a simple dynamical system called symplectic billiards. As opposed to usual/Birkhoff billiards, where length is the generating function, for symplectic billiards symplectic area is the generating function. We explore basic properties and exhibit several similarities, but also differences of symplectic billiards to Birkhoff billiards.
A translated point of a contactomorphism $ϕ$ on a contact manifold with contact form $α$ is a point $p$ where $α$ is preserved under $ϕ$ and whose image under $ϕ$ lies in the same Reeb trajectory. They were introduced as a contact analogon for fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms by Sheila Sandon and can be understood as a special case of leafwise fixed points. She established a contact version of the non-degenerate Arnol'd conjecture on spheres using a generating function approach. It turns out that Sandon's proof only works under the assumption that there exists a generating function …
This paper contains three results about generating functions for Lie-theoretic integration of Poisson brackets and their relation to quantization. In the first, we show how to construct a generating function associated to the germ of any local symplectic groupoid and we provide an explicit (smooth, non-formal) universal formula $S_π$ for integrating any Poisson structure $π$ on a coordinate space. The second result involves the relation to semiclassical quantization. We show that the formal Taylor expansion of $S_{tπ}$ around $t=0$ yields an extract of Kontsevich's star product formula based o…
The notion of generating functions of Poisson structures was first studied in math.SG/0312380.They are special functions which induce, on open subsets of $\R^d$, a Poisson structure together with the local symplectic groupoid integrating it. A universal generating function was provided in terms of a formal power series coming from Kontsevich star product. The present article proves that this universal generating function converges for analytical Poisson structures and compares the induced local symplectic groupoid with the phase space of Karasev--Maslov.
The multiplicative structure of the trivial symplectic groupoid over $\mathbb R^d$ associated to the zero Poisson structure can be expressed in terms of a generating function. We address the problem of deforming such a generating function in the direction of a non-trivial Poisson structure so that the multiplication remains associative. We prove that such a deformation is unique under some reasonable conditions and we give the explicit formula for it. This formula turns out to be the semi-classical approximation of Kontsevich's deformation formula. For the case of a linear Poisson structure, t…
Given a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold, we construct a map from the Hochschild homology of the Fukaya category that they generate to symplectic cohomology. Whenever the identity in symplectic cohomology lies in the image of this map, we conclude that every Lagrangian lies in the idempotent closure of the chosen collection. The main new ingredients are (1) the construction of operations controlled by discs with two outputs on the Fukaya category, and (2) the Cardy relation.
The main result asserts the existence of noncontractible periodic orbits for compactly supported time dependent Hamiltonian systems on the unit cotangent bundle of the torus or of a negatively curved manifold whenever the generating Hamiltonian is sufficiently large over the zero section. The proof is based on Floer homology and on the notion of a relative symplectic capacity. Applications include results about propagation properties of sequential Hamiltonian systems, periodic orbits on hypersurfaces, Hamiltonian circle actions, and smooth Lagrangian skeletons in Stein manifolds.
We prove a version of Sandon's conjecture on the number of translated points of contactomorphisms for the case of prequantization bundles over certain closed monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Namely we show that any contactomorphism of such a prequantization bundle lying in the identity component of the contactomorphism group possesses at least $N$ translated points, where $N$ is the minimal Chern number of the symplectic toric manifold. The proof relies on the theory of generating functions coupled with equivariant cohomology, whereby we adapt Givental's approach to the Arnold conjecture f…
Various Hamiltonian actions of loop groups $\wt G$ and of the algebra $\text{diff}_1$ of first order differential operators in one variable are defined on the cotangent bundle $T^*\wt G$ of a Loop Group. The moment maps generating the $\text{diff}_1$ actions are shown to factorize through those generating the loop group actions, thereby defining commuting diagrams of Poisson maps to the duals of the corresponding centrally extended algebras. The maps are then used to derive a number of infinite commuting families of Hamiltonian flows that are nonabelian generalizations of the dispersive water …
The goal of this paper is to express the extended Goldman symplectic structure on the $SL(n)$ character variety of a punctured Riemann surface in terms of Fock-Goncharov coordinates. The associated symplectic form has integer coefficients expressed via the inverse of the Cartan matrix. The main technical tool is a canonical two-form associated to a flat graph connection. We discuss the relationship between the extension of the Goldman Poisson structure and the Poisson structure defined by Fock and Goncharov. We elucidate the role of the Rogers' dilogarithm as generating function of the symplec…
We present a definition of generating functions of canonical relations, which are real functions on symmetric symplectic spaces, discussing some conditions for the presence of caustics. We show how the actions compose by a neat geometrical formula and are connected to the hamiltonians via a geometrically simple variational principle which determines the classical trajectories, discussing the temporal evolution of such ``extended hamiltonians'' in terms of Hamilton-Jacobi-type equations. Simplest spaces are treated explicitly.
A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $Λ=\{Λ_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $Λ_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $Λ$ and $\tilde Λ$ are called transversal if $Λ_x$ intersects $\tildeΛ_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The La…
Starting from the work of Bhupal, we extend to the contact case the Viterbo capacity and Traynor's construction of symplectic homology. As an application we get a new proof of the Non-Squeezing Theorem of Eliashberg, Kim and Polterovich.
Since spectral invariants were introduced in cotangent bundles via generating functions by Viterbo in the seminal paper "Symplectic topology as the geometry of generating functions," they have been defined in various contexts, mainly via Floer homology theories, and then used in a great variety of applications. In this paper we extend their definition to monotone Lagrangians, which is so far the most general case for which a "classical" Floer theory has been developed. Then, we gather and prove the properties satisfied by these invariants, and which are crucial for their applications. Finally,…
We initiate a study of positive multisections of Lefschetz fibrations via positive factorizations in framed mapping class groups of surfaces. Using our methods, one can effectively capture various interesting symplectic surfaces in symplectic 4-manifolds as multisections, such as Seiberg-Witten basic classes and exceptional classes, or branched loci of compact Stein surfaces as branched coverings of the 4-ball. Various problems regarding the topology of symplectic 4-manifolds, such as the smooth classification of symplectic Calabi-Yau 4-manifolds, can be translated to combinatorial problems in…
For a symplectic twist map, we prove that there is a choice of weak K.A.M. solutions that depend in a continuous way on the cohomology class. We thus obtain a continuous function $u(θ, c)$ in two variables: the angle $θ$ and the cohomology class $c$. As a result, we prove that the Aubry-Mather sets are contained in pseudographs that are vertically ordered by their rotation numbers. Then we characterize the $C^0$ integrable twist maps in terms of regularity of $u$ that allows to see $u$ as a generating function. We also obtain some results for the Lipschitz integrable twist maps. With an exampl…
Let $S$ be a spinor bundle of a pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle $(E,\mathrm{g})$ of even rank. We introduce a new filtration on the algebra $\mathcal{D}(M,S)$ of differential operators on $S$. As main property, the associated graded algebra $\mathrm{gr}\mathcal{D}(M,S)$ is isomorphic to the algebra $\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{M})$ of functions on $\mathcal{M}$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is the symplectic graded manifold of degree $2$ canonically associated to $(E,\mathrm{g})$. Accordingly, we define the Weyl quantization on $\mathcal{M}$ as a map $\mathcal{WQ}_\hbar:\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{M})\to\mathcal{D}(M…
We present a discrete analog of the recently introduced Hamilton-Pontryagin variational principle in Lagrangian mechanics. This unifies two, previously disparate approaches to discrete Lagrangian mechanics: either using the discrete Lagrangian to define a finite version of Hamilton's action principle, or treating it as a symplectic generating function. This is demonstrated for a discrete Lagrangian defined on an arbitrary Lie groupoid; the often encountered special case of the pair groupoid (or Cartesian square) is also given as a worked example.
We derive a new Hamiltonian formulation of Schlesinger equations in terms of the dynamical $r$-matrix structure. The corresponding symplectic form is shown to be the pullback, under the monodromy map, of a natural symplectic form on the extended monodromy manifold. We show that Fock-Goncharov coordinates are log-canonical for the symplectic form on the extended monodromy manifold. Using these coordinates we define the symplectic potential on the monodromy manifold and interpret the isomonodromic tau-function as the generating function of the monodromy map. This, in particular, solves a recent …
This paper derives an equality between the slab functions in Gross-Siebert program and generating functions of open Gromov-Witten invariants for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, and thereby confirms a conjecture of Gross-Siebert on symplectic enumerative meaning of slab functions. The proof is based on the open mirror theorem of Chan-Cho-Lau-Tseng \cite{CCLT13}. It shows an instance of correspondence between tropical and symplectic geometry in the open sector.
We prove a new variant of the energy-capacity inequality for closed rational symplectic manifolds (as well as certain open manifolds such as cotangent bundle of closed manifolds...) and we derive some consequences to C^0-symplectic topology. Namely, we prove that a continuous function which is a uniform limit of smooth Hamiltonians whose flows converge to the identity for the spectral (or Hofer's) distance must vanish. This gives a new proof of uniqueness of continuous generating Hamiltonian for hameomorphisms. This also allows us to improve a result by Cardin and Viterbo on the C^0-rigidity o…
We are proposing Tulczyjew's triple for contact dynamics. The most important ingredients of the triple, namely symplectic diffeomorphisms, special symplectic manifolds, and Morse families, are generalized to the contact framework. These geometries permit us to determine so-called generating family (obtained by merging a special contact manifold and a Morse family) for a Legendrian submanifold. Contact Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics are recast as Legendrian submanifolds of the tangent contact manifold. In this picture, the Legendre transformation is determined to be a passage between two d…
We study the Wigner caustic on shell of a Lagrangian submanifold L of affine symplectic space. We present the physical motivation for studying singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell and present its mathematical definition in terms of a generating family. Because such a generating family is an odd deformation of an odd function, we study simple singularities in the category of odd functions and their odd versal deformations, applying these results to classify the singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell, interpreting these singularities in terms of the local geometry of L.
We describe generating functions for arbitrary-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective space with any number of marked points explicitly. The structural portion of this description gives rise to uniform energy bounds and vanishing results for these invariants. They suggest deep conjectures relating Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds to the energy of pseudo-holomorphic maps and the expected dimension of their moduli space.
We consider the space of polydifferential operators on n functions on symplectic manifolds invariant under symplectic automorphisms, whose study was initiated by Mathieu in 1995. Permutations of inputs yield an action of S_n, which extends to an action of S_{n+1}. We study this structure viewing n as a parameter, in the sense of Deligne's category. For manifolds of dimension 2d, we show that the isotypic part of this space of <= 2d+1-th tensor powers of the reflection representation h=C^n of S_{n+1} is spanned by Poisson polynomials. We also prove a partial converse, and compute explicitly the…
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group and $\mathbf{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p \geq 0$ such that $H^* (G)$ does not have $p$-torsion. We show that a free Lagrangian orbit of a Hamiltonian $G$-action on a compact, monotone, symplectic manifold $X$ split-generates an idempotent summand of the monotone Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X; \mathbf{k})$ if and only if it represents a non-zero object of that summand (slightly more general results are also provided). Our result is based on: an explicit understanding of the wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(T^*G; \mathbf{k})$ through Koszul twisted com…
