The HARPS spectrograph is showing an extreme stability close to the m s-1 level over more than ten years of data. However the radial velocities of some stars are contaminated by a spurious one-year signal with an amplitude that can be as high as a few m s-1 . This signal is in opposition of phase with the revolution of Earth around the Sun, and can be explained by the deformation of spectral lines crossing block stitchings of the CCD when the spectrum of an observed star is alternatively blue- and red-shifted due to the motion of Earth around the Sun. This annual perturbation can be supress by either removing those affected spectral lines from the correlation mask used by the cross correlation technique to derive precise radial velocities, or by simply fitting a yearly sinusoid to the RV data. This is mandatory if we want to detect long-period low-amplitude signals in the HARPS radial velocities of quiet solar-type stars.
We present radial-velocity measurement of eight stars observed with the HARPS Echelle spectrograph mounted on the 3.6-m telescope in La Silla (ESO, Chile). Data span more than ten years and highlight the long-term stability of the instrument. We search for potential planets orbiting HD20003, HD20781, HD21693, HD31527, HD45184, HD51608, HD134060 and HD136352 to increase the number of known planetary systems and thus better constrain exoplanet statistics. After a preliminary phase looking for signals using generalized Lomb-Scargle periodograms, we perform a careful analysis of all signals to sep…
(abridged) Even if the HARPS spectrograph has been operational for more than 15 years and it provides among the most precise Doppler measurements, improvements are still possible. One known problem, for instance, is the non-fully regular block-stitching of the CCDs, which introduces, in some cases, one-year period parasitic signals in the measured radial velocity. The aim is to improve the wavelength calibration of HARPS to push further its planet-detection capabilities. The properties of the CCD stitching-induced pixel-size anomalies are determined with LED flat-field frames, and then a physi…
The solar telescope connected to HARPS-N has been observing the Sun since the summer of 2015. Such high-cadence, long-baseline data set is crucial for understanding spurious radial-velocity signals induced by our Sun and by the instrument. On the instrumental side, this data set allowed us to detect sub-\ms\,systematics that needed to be corrected for. The goal of this manuscript is to i) present a new data reduction software for HARPS-N, ii) demonstrate the improvement brought by this new software on the first three years of the HARPS-N solar data set, and iii) release all the obtained solar …
The HARPS search for southern extrasolar planets: XXXIII. New multi-planet systems in the HARPS volume limited sample: a super-Earth and a Neptune in the habitable zone
The system of two transiting Neptune-sized planets around the bright, young M-dwarf AU Mic provides a unique opportunity to test models of planet formation, early evolution, and star-planet interaction. However, the intense magnetic activity of the host star makes measuring the masses of the planets via the radial velocity (RV) method very challenging. We report on a 1-year, intensive monitoring campaign of the system using 91 observations with the HARPS spectrograph, allowing for detailed modelling of the $\sim 600\, \rm{m\,s^{-1}}$ peak-to-peak activity-induced RV variations. We used a multi…
We present a spectroscopic analysis of a 1-year intensive monitoring campaign of the 22-Myr old planet-hosting M dwarf AU Mic using the HARPS spectrograph. In a companion paper, we reported detections of the planet radial velocity (RV) signatures of the two close-in transiting planets of the system, with respective semi-amplitudes of 5.8 $\pm$ 2.5 m/s and 8.5 $\pm$ 2.5 m/s for AU Mic b and AU Mic c. Here, we perform an independent measurement of the RV semi-amplitude of AU Mic c using Doppler imaging to simultaneously model the activity-induced distortions and the planet-induced shifts in the …
Context. The high number of super-Earth and Earth-like planets in the habitable zone (HZ) detected around M-dwarf stars in the last years has revealed these stellar objects to be the key for planetary radial velocity (RV) searches. Aims. Using the HARPS-N spectrograph within The HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey (HADES) we reach the precision needed to detect small planets with a few Earth masses using the RV technique. Methods. We obtained 138 HARPS-N RV measurements between 2013 May and 2020 September of GJ 720 A, classified as an M0.5V star located at a distance of 15.56 pc. To characteriz…

We report the discovery of four super-Earth planets around HD 215152, with orbital periods of 5.76, 7.28, 10.86, and 25.2 d, and minimum masses of 1.8, 1.7, 2.8, and 2.9 M_Earth respectively. This discovery is based on 373 high-quality radial velocity measurements taken by HARPS over 13 years. Given the low masses of the planets, the signal-to-noise ratio is not sufficient to constrain the planet eccentricities. However, a preliminary dynamical analysis suggests that eccentricities should be typically lower than about 0.03 for the system to remain stable. With two pairs of planets with a perio…
Evolved stars are crucial pieces to understand the dependency of the planet formation mechanism on the stellar mass and to explore deeper the mechanism involved in star-planet interactions. Over the past ten years, we have monitored about 1000 evolved stars for radial velocity variations in search for low-mass companions under the Penn State - Torun Centre for Astronomy Planet Search program with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Selected prospective candidates that required higher RV precision measurements have been followed with HARPS-N at the 3.6 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo under the TAPAS pro…
We present 20 years of radial velocity (RV) measurements of the M1 dwarf Gl15A, combining 5 years of intensive RV monitoring with the HARPS-N spectrograph with 15 years of archival HIRES/Keck RV data. We carry out an MCMC-based analysis of the RV time series, inclusive of Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the description of stellar activity induced RV variations. Our analysis confirms the Keplerian nature and refines the orbital solution for the 11.44-day period super Earth, Gl15A\,b, reducing its amplitude to $1.68^{+0.17}_{-0.18}$ m s$^{-1}$ ($M \sin i = 3.03^{+0.46}_{-0.44}$ M$_\oplus$), an…
The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets. XXXIV. A planetary system around the nearby M dwarf GJ163, with a super-Earth possibly in the habitable zone
M-dwarf stars are promising targets for identifying and characterizing potentially habitable planets. K2-3 is a nearby (45 pc), early-type M dwarf hosting three small transiting planets, the outermost of which orbits close to the inner edge of the stellar (optimistic) habitable zone. The K2-3 system is well suited for follow-up characterization studies aimed at determining accurate masses and bulk densities of the three planets. Using a total of 329 radial velocity measurements collected over 2.5 years with the HARPS-N and HARPS spectrographs and a proper treatment of the stellar activity sign…
Long-term magnetic activity of a sample of M-dwarf stars from the HARPS program II. Activity and radial velocity
We present a comprehensive analysis of 10 years of HARPS radial velocities of the K2V dwarf star HD 13808, which has previously been reported to host two unconfirmed planet candidates. We use the state-of-the-art nested sampling algorithm PolyChord to compare a wide variety of stellar activity models, including simple models exploiting linear correlations between RVs and stellar activity indicators, harmonic models for the activity signals, and a more sophisticated Gaussian process regression model. We show that the use of overly-simplistic stellar activity models that are not well-motivated p…
Aims. We use the recently published database (Trifonov et al. 2020) of radial velocities (RVs) that were derived from fifteen years of HARPS/ESO observations to search for planet candidates. Methods. For targets with sufficient RV data, we apply an automated algorithm to identify significant periodic signals and fit a Keplerian model for orbital estimates. We also search the auxiliary data of stellar-activity indices and compare our findings with existing literature, to detect periodic RV signals that have no counterpart in the activity timeseries. The most convincing signals are then manually…
Context. Low mass stars are currently the best targets for searches for rocky planets in the habitable zone of their host star. Over the last 13 years, precise radial velocities measured with the HARPS spectrograph have identified over a dozen super-Earths and Earth-mass planets (msin i<10Mearth ) around M dwarfs, with a well understood selection function. This well defined sample informs on their frequency of occurrence and on the distribution of their orbital parameters, and therefore already constrains our understanding of planetary formation. The subset of these low-mass planets that were …
The HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey is providing a major contribution to the widening of the current statistics of low-mass planets, through the in-depth analysis of precise radial velocity measurements in a narrow range of spectral sub-types. As part of that program, we obtained radial velocity measurements of Gl 686, an M1 dwarf at d = 8.2 pc. The analysis of data obtained within an intensive observing campaign demonstrates that the excess dispersion is due to a coherent signal, with a period of 15.53 d. Almost simultaneous photometric observations were carried out within the APACHE and E…
The GAPS Programme with HARPS-N@TNG IX. The multi-planet system KELT-6: detection of the planet KELT-6 c and measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for KELT-6 b
In order to understand the observed physical and orbital diversity of extrasolar planetary systems, a full investigation of these objects and of their host stars is necessary. Within this field, one of the main purposes of the GAPS observing project with HARPS-N@TNG is to provide a more detailed characterisation of already known systems. In this framework we monitored the star, hosting two giant planets, HD108874, with HARPS-N for three years in order to refine the orbits, to improve the dynamical study and to search for additional low-mass planets in close orbits. We subtracted the radial vel…
The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets. XXXVIII. Bayesian re-analysis of three systems. New super-Earths, unconfirmed signals, and magnetic cycles
Context. Radial velocity (RV) measurements induced by the presence of planets around late-type stars are contaminated by stellar signals that are of the order of a few meters per second in amplitude, even for the quietest stars. Those signals are induced by acoustic oscillations, convective granulation patterns, active regions co-rotating with the stellar surface, and magnetic activity cycles. Aims. This study investigates the properties of all coherent stellar signals seen on the Sun on timescales up to its sidereal rotational period. By combining HARPS and HARPS-N solar data spanning several…
We aim to investigate the presence of signatures of magnetic cycles and rotation on a sample of 71 early M-dwarfs from the HADES RV programme using high-resolution time-series spectroscopy of the Ca II H & K and Halpha chromospheric activity indicators, the radial velocity series, the parameters of the cross correlation function and the V-band photometry. We used mainly HARPS-N spectra, acquired over four years, and add HARPS spectra from the public ESO database and ASAS photometry light-curves as support data, extending the baseline of the observations of some stars up to 12 years. We provide…
Aims: Even the most-precise radial-velocity instruments gather high-resolution spectra that present systematic errors that a data reduction pipeline cannot identify and correct for efficiently. In this paper, we aim at improving the radial-velocity precision of HARPS measurements by cleaning individual extracted spectra using the wealth of information contained in spectra time-series. Methods: We developed YARARA, a post-processing pipeline designed to clean high-resolution spectra from instrumental systematics and atmospheric contamination. Spectra are corrected for: tellurics, interference p…
Context. We present precise radial-velocity measurements of five solar-type stars observed with the HARPS Echelle spectrograph mounted on the 3.6-m telescope in La Silla (ESO, Chile). With a time span of more than 10 years and a fairly dense sampling, the survey is sensitive to low mass planets down to super-Earths on orbital periods up to 100 days. Aims. Our goal was to search for planetary companions around the stars HD39194, HD93385, HD96700, HD154088, and HD189567 and use Bayesian model comparison to make an informed choice on the number of planets present in the systems based on the radia…
Context. It is now well-established that small, rocky planets are common around low-mass stars. However, the detection of such planets is challenged by the short-term activity of the host stars. Aims. The HArps-N red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey (HADES) program is a long-term project at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo aimed at the monitoring of nearby, early-type, M dwarfs, using the HARPS-N spectrograph to search for small, rocky planets. Methods. A total of 174 HARPS-N spectroscopic observations of the M0.5V-type star GJ 9689 taken over the past seven years have been analysed. We combined these d…
Short- to mid-term magnetic phenomena on the stellar surface of M-type stars cannot only resemble the effects of planets in radial velocity data, but also may hide them. We analyze 145 spectroscopic HARPS-N observations of GJ 3942 taken over the past five years and additional photometry to disentangle stellar activity effects from genuine Doppler signals as a result of the orbital motion of the star around the common barycenter with its planet. To achieve this, we use the common methods of pre-whitening, and treat the correlated red noise by a first-order moving average term and by Gaussian-pr…
The cross-correlation function and template matching techniques have dominated the world of precision radial velocities for many years. Recently, a new technique, named line-by-line, has been developed as an outlier resistant way to efficiently extract radial velocity content from high resolution spectra. We apply this new method to archival HARPS and CARMENES datasets of the K2-18 system. After reprocessing the HARPS dataset with the line-by-line framework, we are able to replicate the findings of previous studies. Furthermore, by splitting the full wavelength range into sub-domains, we were …
We present the current status of and new results from our search for exoplanets in a sample of solar-mass, evolved stars observed with the HARPS-N and the 3.6-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), and the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) and the 9.2-m Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET). The aim of this project is to detect and characterise planetary-mass companions to solar-mass stars in a sample of 122 targets at various stages of evolution from the main sequence (MS) to the red giant branch (RGB), mostly sub-gaints and giants, selected from the Pennsylvania-Toruń Planet Search (PTPS) sample, and…
We report the discovery of a super-Earth orbiting the star GJ 536 based on the analysis of the radial-velocity time series from the HARPS and HARPS-N spectrographs. GJ 536 b is a planet with a minimum mass M sin $i$ of 5.36 +- 0.69 Me with an orbital period of 8.7076 +- 0.0025 days at a distance of 0.066610(13) AU, and an orbit that is consistent with circular. The host star is the moderately quiet M1 V star GJ 536, located at 10 pc from the Sun. We find the presence of a second signal at 43 days that we relate to stellar rotation after analysing the time series of Ca II H&K and H alpha spectr…
The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets. XXXI. Magnetic activity cycles in solar-type stars: statistics and impact on precise radial velocities
We present the complete Bayesian statistical analysis of the HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey (HADES), which monitored the radial velocities of a large sample of M dwarfs with HARPS-N at TNG, over the last 6 years. The targets were selected in a narrow range of spectral types from M0 to M3, $0.3$ M$_\odot < M_\star < 0.71$ M$_\odot$, in order to study the planetary population around a well-defined class of host stars. We take advantage of Bayesian statistics to derive an accurate estimate of the detectability function of the survey. Our analysis also includes the application of Gaussian Proc…
We report the discovery of a highly eccentric long-period Jovian planet orbiting the hot-Jupiter host HD\,83443. By combining radial velocity data from four instruments (AAT/UCLES, Keck/HIRES, HARPS, Minerva-Australis) spanning more than two decades, we find evidence for a planet with m~sin~$i=1.35^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$\,\mj, moving on an orbit with $a=8.0\pm$0.8\,au and eccentricity $e=0.76\pm$0.05. We combine our radial velocity analysis with \textit{Gaia} eDR3 /\textit{Hipparcos} proper motion anomalies and derive a dynamical mass of $1.5^{+0.5}_{-0.2} M_{\rm Jup}$. We perform a detailed dynamic…
Stellar activity is the ultimate source of radial-velocity (RV) noise in the search for Earth-mass planets orbiting late-type main-sequence stars. We analyse the performance of four different indicators and the chromospheric index $\log R'_{\rm HK}$ in detecting RV variations induced by stellar activity in 15 slowly rotating ($v\sin i \leq 5$ km/s), weakly active ($\log R'_{\rm HK} \leq -4.95$) solar-like stars observed with the high-resolution spectrograph HARPS-N. We consider indicators of the asymmetry of the cross-correlation function (CCF) between the stellar spectrum and the binary weigh…
TESS is revolutionising the search for planets orbiting bright and nearby stars. In sectors 3 and 4, TESS observed TOI-402 (TIC-120896927), a bright V=9.1 K1 dwarf also known as HD 15337, and found two transiting signals with period of 4.76 and 17.18 days and radius of 1.90 and 2.21\,\Rearth. This star was observed as part of the radial-velocity search for planets using the HARPS spectrometer, and 85 precise radial-velocity measurements were obtained over a period of 14 years. In this paper, we analyse the HARPS radial-velocity measurements in hand to confirm the planetary nature of these two …
We present a new algorithm for precision radial velocity (pRV) measurements, a line-by-line (LBL) approach designed to handle outlying spectral information in a simple but efficient manner. The effectiveness of the LBL method is demonstrated on two datasets, one obtained with SPIRou on Barnard's star, and the other with HARPS on Proxima Centauri. In the near-infrared, the LBL provides a framework for m/s-level accuracy in pRV measurements despite the challenges associated with telluric absorption and sky emission lines. We confirm with SPIRou measurements spanning 2.7 years that the candidate …
