The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

The determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy, whether the $ν_3$ neutrino mass eigenstate is heavier or lighter than the $ν_1$ and $ν_2$ mass eigenstates, is one of the remaining undetermined fundamental aspects of the Standard Model in the lepton sector. Furthermore the mass hierarchy determination will have an impact in the quest of the neutrino nature (Dirac or Majorana mass terms) towards the formulation of a theory of flavour. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a reactor neutrino experiment under construction at Kaiping, Jiangmen in Southern China composed by a lar…

The JUNO central detector is a spherical liquid scintillator detector with a diameter of 35.4 m and equipped with approximately 18,000 20-inch PMTs. A trigger threshold of 0.5 MeV can be easily achieved by using a common multiplicity trigger and can meet the requirements for measuring neutrino mass ordering. However, it is essential to further reduce the trigger threshold for detecting solar neutrinos…
Observation of supernovae (SN) through their neutrino emission is a fundamental point to understand both SN dynamics and neutrino physical properties. JUNO is a 20kton liquid scintillator detector, under construction in Jiangmen, China. The main aim of the experiment is to determine neutrino mass hierarchy by precisely measuring the energy spectrum of reactor electron antineutrinos. However due to its properties, JUNO has the capability of detecting a high statistics of SN events too. Existing data from SN neutrino consists only of 24 events coming from the SN 1987A,the detection of a SN burst…

JUNO is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment currently under construction in Jiangmen, China. It is primary aiming to determine the neutrino mass ordering. Moreover, its 20\,kt target mass makes it an ideal detector to study neutrinos from various sources, including nuclear reactors, the Earth and its atmosphere, the Sun, and even supernovae. Due to the small cross section of neutrino interactions, the event rate of neutrino experiments is limited. In order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, it is extremely important to control the background levels. In this paper we discuss the potential o…
It has been proposed to determine the mass hierarchy of neutrinos by exploiting the beat between the oscillation frequencies corresponding to the two neutrino mass squared differences. JUNO is based on this concept and uses a large liquid scintillator detector at a distance of 53km from a powerful nuclear reactor complex. We argue that the micro-structure present in antineutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors makes it essential to experimentally determine a reference spectrum with an energy resolution very similar to the one of JUNO.
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a multi-purpose neutrino experiment, will use 20 kt liquid scintillator (LS). To achieve the physics goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering, 3$\%$ energy resolution at 1 MeV is required. This puts strict requirements on the LS light yield and the transparency. Four LS purification steps have been designed and mid-scale plants have been built at Daya Bay. To examine the performance of the purified LS and find the optimized LS composition, the purified LS was injected to the antineutrino detector 1 in the experimental hall 1 (EH1-AD1)…

It is also able to study many other physical phenomena, including supernova neutrinos, solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos, atmosphere neutrinos, and so forth. The central detector of JUNO contains 20,000~tons of liquid scintillator (LS) and about 18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which is the largest liquid scintillator one under construction in the world up today. The energy resolution…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment. One of the main goals is to determine the neutrino mass ordering by precisely measuring the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos. For reactor antineutrino detection, cosmogenic backgrounds such as $^9$Li/$^8$He and fast neutrons induced by cosmic muons should be rejected carefully by applying muon veto cuts, which requires good muon track reconstruction. With a 20~kton liquid scintillator detector, simulation shows the proportion of muon bundles to be around 8\% in the JUNO, while its reconstructio…
The advent of gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK-Gd) and of the soon-to-start JUNO liquid scintillator detector marks a substantial improvement in the global sensitivity for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB). The present article reviews the detector properties most relevant for the DSNB searches in both experiments and estimates the expected signal and background levels. Based on these inputs, we evaluate the sensitivity of both experiments individually and combined. Using a simplified statistical approach, we find that both SK-Gd and JUNO have the potential to reach $>$3$σ$…
The current event display system in the offline software of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory Experiment(JUNO) is based on the ROOT EVE package. We use Unity, a renowned game engine, to improve its performance and make it available on different platforms. Compared to ROOT, Unity provides a more vivid demonstration for high energy physics experiments and can be ported to different platforms easily. We build a tool for event display in JUNO with Unity. It provides us an intuitive way to observe the detector model, the particle trajectories and the hit distributions.

The rate of cosmic muons reaching the JUNO detector is about 3~Hz and the muon induced neutrons and isotopes are major backgrounds for the neutrino detection. Reconstruction of the muon trajectory in the detector is crucial for the study and rejection of those backgrounds. This paper will introdu…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using a 20 kiloton underground liquid scintillator detector (CD). One of the keys is the energy resolution of the CD to reach <3% at 1 MeV, where totally 15,000 MCP-PMT will be used. The optimization of the 20-inch MCP-PMT is very important for better detection efficiency and stable performance. In this work, we will show the study to optimize the MCP-PMT working configuration for charge measurement. Particularly, the quality of PMT signal is another key for high-precision neutrino experim…
This work presents a sensitivity study of a reactor liquid scintillator detector to three kinds of dark bosons with masses below 1 MeV, such as dark photons, axion-like particles and light scalar bosons. The JUNO-TAO detector with Taishan nuclear reactor is taken as a reference. With proposed 180 days data taking, the sensitivity to the dark bosons can reach $\sim10^{-5}$ 95%C.L. for the optimized signal to background ratio for the electron coupling constant $\it{g_X} $ through inverse Compton-like scattering. Similar calculations are completed for axion-like particles and scalar bosons. The b…
In the past few decades, numerous searches have been made for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$νββ$) process, aiming to establish whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles (Majorana neutrinos), but no 0$νββ$ decay signal has yet been observed. A number of new experiments are proposed but they ultimately suffer from a common problem: the sensitivity may not increase indefinitely with the target mass. We have performed a detailed analysis of the physics potential by using the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to improve the sensitivity to 0$νββ$ up to a few meV, a major s…
Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used underwater in large-scale neutrino experiments. As a hollow glass spherelike structure, implosion is unavoidable during long-term operation under large water pressure. There is a possibility of cascade implosion to neighbor PMTs due to shockwave. Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory designed a protection structure for each 20-inch PMT, consisting of a top cover, a bottom cover, and their connection. This paper introduces the requirement and design of the PMT protection system, including the material selection, investigation of manufacture techn…
JUNO is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and rich in many other neutrino topics. A prototype is designed and set up for better understanding sub-systems of future detector. The preliminary results show that its threshold reaches ~0.3MeV with trigger rate ~290 Hz on the ground with cosmic muon rate ~35 Hz. Aiming for a better detector understanding from PMT signal, three reconstruction algorithms are compared for PMT waveforms with different overshoot ratios, including charge integration, waveform fitting, and deconvolution. It is concluded that the three methods have similar p…
High precision vertex and energy reconstruction is crucial for large liquid scintillator detectors such as JUNO, especially for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering by analyzing the energy spectrum of reactor neutrinos. This paper presents a data-driven method to obtain more realistic and more accurate expected PMT response of positron events in JUNO, and develops a simultaneous vertex and energy reconstruction method that combines the charge and time information of PMTs. For the JUNO detector, the impact of vertex inaccuracy on the energy resolution is about 0.6\%.
Jiangmen Underground neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a next generation liquid scintillator neutrino experiment under construction phase in South China. Thanks to the anti-neutrinos produced by the nearby nuclear power plants, JUNO will primarily study the neutrino mass hierarchy, one of the open key questions in neutrino physics. One key ingredient for the success of the measurement is to use high speed, high resolution sampling electronics located very close to the detector signal. Linearity in the response of the electronics in another important ingredient for the success of the experiment. D…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large liquid scintillator (LS) detector for neutrino mass ordering and other neutrino physics research. The detector uses large-size $20$ inches photomultiplier tubes to detect photons from a liquid scintillator. The large PMTs are sensitive and easily affected such that the detection efficiency loses about 60$\%$ under the geomagnetic field intensity ($\sim$500 mG). It has a significantly negative effect on the detector performance, and a compensation system is necessary for geomagnetic field shielding. As permalloys are easily rusted …
