JUNO is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment currently under construction in Jiangmen, China. It is primary aiming to determine the neutrino mass ordering. Moreover, its 20\,kt target mass makes it an ideal detector to study neutrinos from various sources, including nuclear reactors, the Earth and its atmosphere, the Sun, and even supernovae. Due to the small cross section of neutrino interactions, the event rate of neutrino experiments is limited. In order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, it is extremely important to control the background levels. In this paper we discuss the potential of particle identification in JUNO, its underlying principles and possible areas of application in the experiment. While the presented concepts can be transferred to any large liquid scintillator detector, our methods are evaluated specifically for JUNO and the results are mainly driven by its high optical photon yield of 1,200 photo electrons per MeV of deposited energy. In order to investigate the potential of event discrimination, several event pairings are analysed, i.e. $α/β$, $p/β$, $e^+/e^-$, and $e^-/γ$. We compare the discrimination performance of advanced analytical techniques based on neural networks and on the topological event reconstruction keeping the standard Gatti filter as a reference. We use the Monte Carlo samples generated in the physically motivated energy intervals. We study the dependence of our cuts on energy, radial position, PMT time resolution, and dark noise. The results show an excellent performance for $α/β$ and $p/β$ with the Gatti method and the neural network. Furthermore, $e^+/e^-$ and $e^-/γ$ can partly be distinguished by means of neural network and topological reconstruction on a statistical basis. Especially in the latter case, the topological method proved very successful.

In the past few decades, numerous searches have been made for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$νββ$) process, aiming to establish whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles (Majorana neutrinos), but no 0$νββ$ decay signal has yet been observed. A number of new experiments are proposed but they ultimately suffer from a common problem: the sensitivity may not increase indefinitely with the target mass. We have performed a detailed analysis of the physics potential by using the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to improve the sensitivity to 0$νββ$ up to a few meV, a major s…

The main goal of the JUNO experiment is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. To achieve this, an extraordinary energy resolution of at least $3\,\%$ at $1\,$MeV is required for which all parts of the JUNO detector need to meet certain quality criteria. This is relevant in particular for those which are related to the energy resolution of the detector, such as the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to be deployed in JUNO. This paper presents the setup and performance of a dedicated PMT mass testing facility to examine and characterize the performance of the 20-inch JUNO PMTs. Its quasi-in…

Large-scale detectors consisting of a liquid scintillator target surrounded by an array of photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in the modern neutrino experiments: Borexino, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the upcoming JUNO with its satellite detector TAO. Such apparatuses are able to measure neutrino energy which can be derived from the amount of light and its spatial and temporal distribution over PMT channels. However, achieving a fine energy resolution in large-scale detectors is challenging. In this work, we present machine learning methods for energy reconstruction in…
We has set up a light scattering spectrometer to study the depolarization of light scattering in linear alkylbenzene. From the scattering spectra it can be unambiguously shown that the depolarized part of light scattering belongs to Rayleigh scattering. The additional depolarized Rayleigh scattering can make the effective transparency of linear alkylbenzene much better than it was expected. Therefore sufficient scintillation photons can transmit through the large liquid scintillator detector of JUNO. Our study is crucial to achieving the unprecedented energy resolution 3\%/$\sqrt{E\mathrm{(MeV…

In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This s…
Using truth-level Monte Carlo simulations of particle interactions in a large volume of liquid argon, we demonstrate physics capabilities enabled by reconstruction of topologically compact and isolated low-energy features, or `blips,' in large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) events. These features are mostly produced by electron products of photon interactions depositing ionization energy. The blip identification capability of the LArTPC is enabled by its unique combination of size, position resolution precision, and low energy thresholds. We show that consideration of reconstruc…

The in-beam tests of two Si pixel type TRACE detectors have been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the possibility of identifying heavy-ion reactions products with mass A~10 at low kinetic energy, i.e., around 10 MeV. Two separate read-out chains, digital and analog, were used. The Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the identification matrices for the digitally processed part of the data. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained, however, the $α$ particles contaminated significantly the recorded data in the lower energy p…
Particle tracks and differential energy loss measured in high pressure gaseous detectors can be exploited for event identification in neutrinoless double beta decay~($0νββ$) searches. We develop a new method based on Kalman Filter in a Bayesian formalism (KFB) to reconstruct meandering tracks of MeV-scale electrons. With simulation data, we compare the signal and background discrimination power of the KFB method assuming different detector granularities and energy resolutions. Typical background from $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains can be suppressed by another order of magnitude than tha…
A MICROMEGAS detection amplifier has been incorporated into the design of the TAMU MDM focal plane detector with the purpose of improving the energy resolution and thus, the particle identification. The design, construction and performance characteristics of a simple axial-field ionization chamber suitable for identifying ions in a radioactive beam are presented. Optimized for use with low-energy radioactive beams (< 5 MeV/A) the detector presents only three 0.5 $μ$m/cm$^2$ foils to the beam in addition to the detector gas. A fast charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) integrated into the detector design is also described. Coupling this fast CSA to the axial field ionization chamber produces an output pulse with a risetime of 60-70 ns and a fall time of 100 ns, making the detector capable of su…
