A $^{238}$U projectile beam was used to create cadmium isotopes via abrasion-fission at 410 MeV/u in a beryllium target at the entrance of the in-flight separator FRS at GSI. The fission fragments were separated with the FRS and injected into the isochronous storage ring ESR for mass measurements. The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) was performed under two different experimental conditions, with and without B$ρ$-tagging at the dispersive central focal plane of the FRS. In the experiment with B$ρ$-tagging the magnetic rigidity of the injected fragments was determined by an accuracy of $2\times 10^{-4}$. A new method of data analysis, using a correlation matrix for the combined data set from both experiments, has provided mass values for 25 different isotopes for the first time. The high selectivity and sensitivity of the experiment and analysis has given access even to rare isotopes detected with a few atoms per week. In this letter we present for the $^{129,130,131}$Cd isotopes mass values directly measured for the first time. The Cd results clearly show a very pronounced shell effect at $N=82$ which is in agreement with the conclusion from $γ$-ray spectroscopy of $^{130}$Cd and confirms the assumptions of modern shell-model calculations.
We present systematic large-scale shell-model calculations for Rn isotopes with $A=$ 207 to 216. For the $^{207-212}$Rn isotopes, we perform calculations with KHH7B interaction, while for $^{213-216}$Rn isotopes with KHPE and KHH7B interactions. The calculated energies and electromagnetic properties are compared with the available experimental data and predicted where experimental data are not available. We also suggest spins and parities of several unconfirmed states available from the recent experimental data. Comprehensive study of several isomeric states from the calculated shell-model con…
Shell evolution is studied in the neutron-rich silicon isotopes 36,38,40 Si using neutron single-particle strengths deduced from one-neutron knockout reactions. Configurations involving neutron excita- tions across the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps are quantified experimentally in these rare isotopes. Comparisons with shell model calculations show that the tensor force, understood to drive the col- lective behavior in 42 Si with N = 28, is already important in determining the structure of 40 Si with N = 26. New data relating to cross-shell excitations provide the first quantitative support for …
The structure of $^{35,37,39}$S isotopes is described by performing comprehensive shell model calculations with SDPF-U and SDPFMW interactions. Protons and neutrons are restricted to the $sd$-shell for $N < 20$, neutrons start to fill the $pf$-shell for $N > 20$. Natural parity states are described by only in-shell mixing, unnatural parity states with 1p-1h inter-shell neutron excitations. With SDPF-U interaction, reported are the results for natural parity states only because this interaction is not suitable for cross shell excitations. Calculated energy levels, electromagnetic properties and…
Advances in the self-consistent Green's function approach to finite nuclei are discussed, including the implementation of three-nucleon forces and the extension to the Gorkov formalism. We report results on binding energies in the nitrogen and fluorine isotopic chains, as well as spectral functions of 22O. The application to medium-mass open-shell systems is illustrated by separation energy spectra of two argon isotopes, which are compared to one-neutron removal experiments.
For the first time, the shell structure of open-shell nuclei is described in a fully self-consistent extension of the covariant energy density functional theory. The approach implies quasiparticle-vibration coupling for superfluid systems. One-body Dyson equation formulated in the doubled quasiparticle space of Dirac spinors is solved for nucleonic propagators in tin isotopes which represent the reference case: the obtained energies of the single-quasiparticle levels and their spectroscopic amplitudes are in agreement with data. The model is applied to describe the shell evolution in a chain o…
Large-scale shell-model calculations are carried out in the model space including neutron-hole orbitals $2p_{1/2}$, $1f_{5/2}$, $2p_{3/2}$, $0i_{13/2}$, $1f_{7/2}$ and $0h_{9/2}$ to study the structure and electromagnetic properties of neutron deficient Pb isotopes. An optimized effective interaction is used. Good agreement between full shell-model calculations and experimental data is obtained for the spherical states in isotopes $^{194-206}$Pb. The lighter isotopes are calculated with an importance-truncation approach constructed based on the monopole Hamiltonian. The full shell-model result…
We derive and compute effective valence-space shell-model interactions from ab-initio coupled-cluster theory and apply them to open-shell and neutron-rich oxygen and carbon isotopes. Our shell-model interactions are based on nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective-field theory. We compute the energies of ground and low-lying states, and find good agreement with experiment. In particular our calculations are consistent with the N=14, 16 shell closures in oxygen-22 and oxygen-24, while for carbon-20 the corresponding N=14 closure is weaker. We find good agreement between o…
The shapes of neutron-rich exotic Ni isotopes are studied. Large-scale shell model calculations are performed by advanced Monte Carlo Shell Model (MCSM) for the $pf$-$g_{9/2}$-$d_{5/2}$ model space. Experimental energy levels are reproduced well by a single fixed Hamiltonian. Intrinsic shapes are analyzed for MCSM eigenstates. Intriguing interplays among spherical, oblate, prolate and gamma-unstable shapes are seen including shape fluctuations, $E$(5)-like situation, the magicity of doubly-magic $^{56,68,78}$Ni, and the coexistence of spherical and strongly deformed shapes. Regarding the last …
A shell model study of the low energy region of the spectra in Ge isotopes for $38\leq N\leq 50$ is presented, analyzing the excitation energies, quadrupole moments, $B(E2)$ values and occupation numbers. The theoretical results have been compared with the available experimental data. The shell model calculations have been performed employing three different effective interactions and valence spaces. We have used two effective shell model interactions, JUN45 and jj44b, for the valence space $f_{5/2} \, p \,g_{9/2}$ without truncation. To include the proton subshell $f_{7/2}$ in valence space we…
We have reported shell-model results for $^{47-58}$Ca isotopes in the $fp$, $fpg_{9/2}$ and $fpg_{9/2}d_{5/2}$ model spaces using realistic $NN$ interaction. We have also performed a systematic shell-model study using interactions derived from in-medium similarity-renormalization group (IM-SRG) targeted for a particular nucleus with chiral $NN$ and $3N$ forces. The results obtained are in a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data in $fp$ model space with $NN$ interaction. It is shown that the $g_{9/2}$ and $d_{5/2}$ orbitals play an important role for heavier neutron-rich $^{…
The recently confirmed neutron-shell closure at N = 32 has been investigated for the first time below the magic proton number Z = 20 with mass measurements of the exotic isotopes 52,53K, the latter being the shortest-lived nuclide investigated at the online mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The resulting two-neutron separation energies reveal a 3 MeV shell gap at N = 32, slightly lower than for 52Ca, highlighting the doubly-magic nature of this nuclide. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Boguliubov and ab initio Gorkov-Green function calculations are challenged by the new measurements but reproduce qualitatively t…
We expand the triaxial projected shell model basis to include triaxially-deformed multi-quasiparticle states. This allows us to study the yrast and gamma-vibrational bands up to high spins for both gamma-soft and well-deformed nuclei. As the first application, a systematic study of the high-spin states in Er-isotopes is performed. The calculated yrast and gamma-bands are compared with the known experimental data, and it is shown that the agreement between theory and experiment is quite satisfactory. The calculation leads to predictions for bands based on one- and two-gamma phonon where current…
Various estimates of the even-odd effect of the mass shell of atomic nuclei are considered. Based on the experimental mass values of the Ca, Sn, and Pb isotopes, the dependence of the energy gap on the neutrons number is traced and the relationship of this characteristic to the properties of external neutron subshells is shown. In nuclei with closed proton shells, effects directly related to neutron pairing and effects of nucleon shells are discussed.
We probe the $N=82$ nuclear shell closure by mass measurements of neutron-rich cadmium isotopes with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer at ISOLDE-CERN. The new mass of $^{132}$Cd offers the first value of the $N=82$, two-neutron shell gap below $Z=50$ and confirms the phenomenon of mutually enhanced magicity at $^{132}$Sn. Using the recently implemented phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance method, the ordering of the low-lying isomers in $^{129}$Cd and their energies are determined. The new experimental findings are used to test large-scale shell-model, mean-field and beyond-mean-field calculations, a…
"Why are the tin isotopes soft?" has remained, for the past decade, an open problem in nuclear structure physics: models which reproduce the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the "doubly-closed shell" nuclei, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb, overestimate the ISGMR energies of the open-shell tin and cadmium nuclei, by as much as 1 MeV. In an effort to shed some light onto this problem, we present results of detailed studies of the ISGMR in the molybdenum nuclei, with the goal of elucidating where--and how--the softness manifests itself between $^{90}$Zr and the cadmium and tin isotopes. Th…
The ground-state bands (GSBs) in the even-even hafnium isotopes $^{170-184}$Hf are investigated by using the cranked shell model (CSM) with pairing correlations treated by the particle-number conserving (PNC) method. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia are reproduced very well by theoretical calculations. The second upbending of the GSB at high frequency $\hbarω\approx0.5$ MeV observed (predicted) in $^{172}$Hf ($^{170,174-178}$Hf) attributes to the sudden alignments of the proton high-$j$ orbitals $\pi1i_{13/2}$ $(1/2^{+}[660])$, $\pi1h_{9/2}$ $(1/2^{-}[541])$ and orbital $\pi1h_{11…
In this work, Na isotopes with mass varying from $A=$ 20 to 31 have been studied using DJ16A, JISP16 and N3LO microscopic effective interactions in the $sd$-shell. These effective interactions are derived for $sd$-shell using no-core shell model wavefunctions and a unitary transformation method. We have also performed calculation with IMSRG effective interactions targeted for a particular nucleus. The studies include a detailed analysis of ground state binding energy, low-lying spectra, and electromagnetic properties such as reduced electric quadrupole transition strengths, quadrupole and magn…
Neutron-deficient $^{177-185}$Hg isotopes were studied using in-source laser resonance-ionization spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam facility, in an experiment combining different detection methods tailored to the studied isotopes. These include either alpha-decay tagging or Multi-reflection Time-of-Flight gating to identify the isotopes of interest. The endpoint of the odd-even nuclear shape staggering in mercury was observed directly by measuring for the first time the isotope shifts and hyperfine structures of $^{177-180}$Hg. Changes in the mean-square charge radii for all…
\item[Background] Ground-state spins and magnetic moments are sensitive to the nuclear wave function, thus they are powerful probes to study the nuclear structure of isotopes far from stability. \item[Purpose] Extend our knowledge about the evolution of the $1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ states for K isotopes beyond the $N = 28$ shell gap. \item[Method] High-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy on bunched atomic beams. \item[Results] From measured hyperfine structure spectra of K isotopes, nuclear spins and magnetic moments of the ground states were obtained for isotopes from $N = 19$ up to $N = 32$. …
We report first precision mass measurements of the $1/2^-$ isomeric and $9/2^+$ ground states of $^{101}$In. The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first…
Recent experiments have reached the neutron-rich Cr isotope with N=40 and confirmed enhanced collectivity near this sub-shell. The current data focus on low-spin spectroscopy only, with little information on the states where high-j particles align their spins with the system rotation. By applying the Projected Shell Model, we show that rotation alignment occurs in neutron-rich even-even Cr nuclei as early as spin 8 and, due to shell filling, the aligning particles differ in different isotopes. It is suggested that observation of irregularities in moments of inertia is a direct probe of the def…
We report a comprehensive study of $^{10-14}$B isotopes within the \textit{ab-initio} no-core shell model (NCSM) using realistic nucleon-nucleon (\textit{NN}) interactions. In particular, we have applied the inside non-local outside Yukawa (INOY) interaction to study energy spectra, electromagnetic properties and point-proton radii of the boron isotopes. The NCSM results with the charge-dependent Bonn 2000 (CDB2K), the chiral next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) and optimized next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO$_{opt}$) interactions are also reported. We have reached basis sizes …
We study the Li isotopes systematically in terms of the tensor-optimized shell model (TOSM) by using a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction as the AV8' interaction. The short-range correlation is treated in the unitary correlation operator method (UCOM). Using the TOSM+UCOM approach, we investigate the role of the tensor force on each spectrum of the Li isotopes. It is found that the tensor force produces quite a characteristic effect on various states in each spectrum and those spectra are affected considerably by the tensor force. The energy difference between the spin-orbit partner, the p1/2 an…
Low-lying continuum states of exotic oxygen isotopes are studied, by introducing the Continuum-Coupled Shell Model (CCSM) characterized by an infinite wall placed very far and by an interaction for continuum coupling constructed in a close relation to realistic shell-model interaction. Neutron emission spectra from exotic oxygen isotopes are calculated by the doorway-state approach in heavy-ion multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The results agree with experiment remarkably well, as an evidence that the continuum effects are stronger than $\sim$1 MeV, consistently with the shell evolution in exo…
We present a systematic study of the $^{10-14}\text{C}$ isotopes within the \textit{ab initio} no-core shell model theory. We apply four different realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions: (i) the charge-dependent Bonn 2000 (CDB2K) potential (ii) the inside non-local outside Yukawa (INOY) potential (iii) the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) potential, and (iv) the optimized next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO$_{opt}$) potential. We report the low-lying energy spectra of both positive and negative parity states for the $^{10-14}\text{C}$ isotopes and investigate the level s…
A precision mass investigation of the neutron-rich titanium isotopes $^{51-55}$Ti was performed at TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN). The range of the measurements covers the $N=32$ shell closure and the overall uncertainties of the $^{52-55}$Ti mass values were significantly reduced. Our results confirm the existence of a weak shell effect at $N=32$, establishing the abrupt onset of this shell closure. Our data were compared with state-of-the-art \textit{ab-initio} shell model calculations which, despite very successfully describing where the $N=32$ shell gap is strong,…
The neutron-rich, even-even 122,124,126Pd isotopes has been studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Excited states at 499(9), 590(11), and 686(17) keV were found in the three isotopes, which we assign to the respective 2+ -> 0+ decays. In addition, a candidate for the 4+ state at 1164(20) keV was observed in 122Pd. The resulting Ex(2+) systematics are essentially similar to those of the Xe (Z=54) isotopic chain and theoretical prediction by IBM-2, suggesting no serious shell quenching in the Pd isotopes in the vicinity of N=82.
Shell model calculations with the neutron effective charge as single free parameter describe well the \bet and \bef rates for $N\le 64$ in the Cd and Sn isotopes. The former exhibit weak permanent deformation corroborating the prediction of a pseudo SU3 symmetry, which remains of heuristic value in the latter, though the pairing force erodes the quadrupole dominance. Calculations in $10^7$ and $10^{10}$-dimensional spaces exhibit almost identical patterns: A vindication of the shell model. For $N\ge 64$ quadrupole dominance is accentuated in the Cd isotopes and gives way to seniority dominance…
Magnetic dipole strength functions are determined for the series of germanium isotopes from $N = Z = 32$ to $N$ = 48 on the basis of a large number of transition strengths calculated within the shell model. The evolution of the strength with increasing neutron number in the $1g_{9/2}$ orbital is analyzed. A bimodal structure comprising an enhancement toward low transition enery and a resonance in the region of the scissors mode is identified. The low-energy enhancement is strongest near closed shells, in particular at the almost completely filled $1g_{9/2}$ orbital, while the scissorslike reso…
We report \textit{ab initio} no-core shell model (NCSM) study of $^{18-24}$Ne isotopes for energy spectra, electromagnetic properties, and point-proton radii using three realistic $NN$ interactions. We have used inside nonlocal outside Yukawa (INOY), charge-dependent Bonn 2000 (CDB2K) and the chiral next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) interactions. We are able to reach basis size up to $N_{max}$ = 6 for $^{18}$Ne and $N_{max}$ = 4 for the $^{19-24}$Ne isotopes with m-scheme dimensions up to 1.0 $\times$ $10^9$ in case of $^{24}$Ne. We observed better results for INOY interaction in…
Rare isotope beams of neutron-deficient $^{106,108,110}$Sn nuclei from the fragmentation of $^{124}$Xe were employed in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment yielding $B(E2, 0^+_1 \to 2^+_1)$ transition strengths. The results indicate that these $B(E2,0^+_1 \to 2^+_1)$ values are much larger than predicted by current state-of-the-art shell model calculations. This discrepancy can be explained if protons from within the Z = 50 shell are contributing to the structure of low-energy excited states in this region. Such contributions imply a breaking of the doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn cor…
Understanding and predicting the formation of shell structure from nuclear forces is a central challenge for nuclear physics. While the magic numbers N=2,8,20 are generally well understood, N=28 is the first standard magic number that is not reproduced in microscopic theories with two-nucleon forces. In this Letter, we show that three-nucleon forces give rise to repulsive interactions between two valence neutrons that are key to explain 48Ca as a magic nucleus, with a high 2+ excitation energy and a concentrated magnetic dipole transition strength. The repulsive three-nucleon mechanism improve…
The rapid shape change in Zr isotopes near neutron number $N$=60 is identified to be caused by type II shell evolution associated with massive proton excitations to its $0g_{9/2}$ orbit, and is shown to be a quantum phase transition. Monte Carlo shell-model calculations are carried out for Zr isotopes of $N$=50-70 with many configurations spanned by eight proton orbits and eight neutron orbits. Energy levels and B(E2) values are obtained within a single framework in a good agreement with experiments, depicting various shapes in going from $N$=50 to 70. Novel coexistence of prolate and triaxial…
Production cross sections and excitation functions of neutron deficient isotopes of U, Pa and Th have been measured in the reaction of 22Ne + 208Pb. The comparison of experimental production cross sections of uranium isotopes with the neutron number 126 <= N <= 134 to the values calculated using statistical model of nuclear deexcitation has been carried out. There is shown, that none of the commonly used methods of introduction of shell effect influence on the production cross sections of evaporations residues allows to reproduce unambigiously used set of experimental data. Simple semiempirica…
Whereas previous works for B(E2)'s in the even-even Ti isotopes focused on yrast transitions we here also consider inter-band transitions to a second group i.e. states like 1_{1} , 2_{2}, 3_{1} , 4_{2} , 5_{1}e.t.c.. We focus on variations from one even-even Ti isotope to the next. We make a qualitative comparison with similar transitions in a heavier deformed nucleus.
High-precision mass measurements of more than thirty neutron-rich nuclides around the Z=28 closed proton shell were performed with the triple-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN to address the question of a possible neutron shell closure at N=40. The results, for 57,60,64-69Ni (Z=28), 65-74,76Cu (Z=29), and 63-65,68-78Ga (Z=31), have a relative uncertainty of the order of 10^8. In particular, the masses of 72-74,76Cu have been measured for the first time. We analyse the resulting mass surface for signs of magicity, comparing the behavior of N=40 to that of known magic numbers and to…
We formulate the In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IM-SRG) for open-shell nuclei using a multi-reference formalism based on a generalized Wick theorem introduced in quantum chemistry. The resulting multi-reference IM-SRG (MR-IM-SRG) is used to perform the first ab initio study of even oxygen isotopes with chiral NN and 3N Hamiltonians, from the proton to the neutron drip lines. We obtain an excellent reproduction of experimental ground-state energies with quantified uncertainties, which is validated by results from the Importance-Truncated No-Core Shell Model and the Coupled Cluster …
The role of the entrance channel in fusion-fission reactions was studied by the theoretical analysis of the experimental evaporation residue excitation functions for reactions leading to the same compound nucleus. The evaporation residues cross sections for xn-channels were calculated in the frame of the combined dinuclear system concept and advanced statistical model. The revealed differences between experimental data on the evaporation residues in the ^{40}Ar+^{176}Hf, ^{86}Kr + ^{130}Xe and ^{124}Sn + ^{92}Zr reactions leading to the ^{216}Th^* compound nucleus are explained by the differen…
We study low-lying states of even carbon isotopes in the range A = 10 - 20 within the large- scale no-core shell model (NCSM). Using several accurate nucleon-nucleon (NN) as well as NN plus three-nucleon (NNN) interactions, we calculate excitation energies of the lowest 2+ state, the electromagnetic B(E2; 2+1 -> 0+1) transition rates, the 2+1 quadrupole moments as well as se- lected electromagnetic transitions among other states. Recent experimental campaigns to measure 2+-state lifetimes indicate an interesting evolution of nuclear structure that pose a challenge to reproduce theoretically fr…
Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions (B(GT)) in electron-capture (EC) daughters stemming from the parent ground state are computed with the shell-model in the full pf-shell space, with quasi-particle random-phase approximation (QRPA) in the formalism of Krumlinde and Möller and with an Approximate Method (AM) for assigning an effective B(GT). These are compared to data available from decay and charge-exchange (CE) experiments across titanium isotopes in the pf-shell from A=43 to A=62, the largest set available for any chain of isotopes in the pf-shell. The present study is the first to exa…
The variation of E(2+_1) of (134-140)Sn calculated with empirical SMPN interaction has striking similarity with that of experimental E(2+_1) of even-even (18-22)O and (42-48)Ca, showing clearly that N=84-88 spectra exhibit the effect of gradual filling up of ν(2f_{7/2}) orbital which finally culminates in a new shell closure at N=90. Realistic two-body interaction CWG does not show this feature. Spin-tensor decomposition of SMPN and CWG interactions and variation of their components with valence neutron number reveals that the origin of the shell closure at 140Sn lies in the three body effects…

We show how shape transitions in the neutron-rich exotic Si and S isotopes occur in terms of shell-model calculations with a newly constructed Hamiltonian based on V_MU interaction. We first compare the calculated spectroscopic-strength distributions for the proton 0d_5/2,3/2 and 1s_1/2 orbitals with results extracted from a 48Ca(e,e'p) experiment to show the importance of the tensor-force component of the Hamiltonian. Detailed calculations for the excitation energies, B(E2) and two-neutron separation energies for the Si and S isotopes show excellent agreement with experimental data. The poten…
We report on the measurement of optical isotope shifts for $^{38,39,42,44,46\text{-}51}$K relative to $^{47}$K from which changes in the nuclear mean square charge radii across the N=28 shell closure are deduced. The investigation was carried out by bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam facility. Mean square charge radii are now known from $^{37}$K to $^{51}$K, covering all $νf_{7/2}$-shell as well as all $νp_{3/2}$-shell nuclei. These measurements, in conjunction with those of Ca, Cr, Mn and Fe, provide a first insight into the $Z$ dependence of the…
The lightest Xenon isotopes are studied in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM). The valence space comprises all the orbits lying between the magic closures N=Z=50 and N=Z=82. The calculations produce collective deformed structures of triaxial nature that encompass nicely the known experimental data. Predictions are made for the (still unknown) N=Z nucleus 108-Xe. The results are interpreted in terms of the competition between the quadrupole correlations enhanced by the pseudo-SU(3) structure of the positive parity orbits and the pairing correlations brought in by the 0h11/2 orbi…
