Recently, several advanced multi-antenna radio communications technologies have emerged to meet the increased capacity demands in wireless multi-user networks. Despite their great potential, the extent of these techniques' practical applicability still remains questionable, since they have to face either backhaul limitations or cost and hardware constraints. In this paper, we propose a new system solution which includes network architecture, antenna technology and radio transmission protocol to reduce drastically the hardware complexity and cost as well as the channel state information / user data feedback requirements of multi-user multi-antenna wireless networks. We focus on the forward link of an interference channel in a cloud radio access network setup wherein an arbitrary number of remote radio heads are each equipped with a single radio frequency module parasitic antenna array and wish to send data to their respective single-antenna user terminals, while co-existing in time and frequency. Base stations select cooperatively the optimal combination of pre-determined beams prior transmission. Our proposed approach is able to achieve the aforementioned goals, while offering significant downlink sum-rate gains due to the available spatial degrees of freedom.
This work considers multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems using hierarchical modulation. A disadvantage of the maximum-likelihood (ML) MIMO detector is that computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of transmit antennas. To reduce complexity, we propose a hierarchical modulation scheme to be used in MIMO trans- mission where base and enhancement layers are incorporated. In the proposed receiver, the base layer is detected first with a minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector which is followed by ML detection of the enhancement layer. Our results in…

Full-dimensional (FD) channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) has always been a major limitation of the spectral efficiency of cellular multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks. This letter proposes an FD-directional spatial channel estimation algorithm for frequency division duplex massive FD-MIMO systems. The proposed algorithm uses the statistical spatial correlation between the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) channels of each user equipment. It spatially decomposes the UL channel into azimuthal and elevation dimensions to estimate the array principal receive responses. An FD spatial …
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an indispensable technique for the next-generation backhaul/fronthaul network thanks to its large transmission bandwidth. Especially for heterogeneous network (HetNet), the mmWave full-dimension (FD)-MIMO is exploited to establish the backhaul/fronthaul link between phantom-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BSs, where an efficient precoding is prerequisite. Against this background, this paper proposes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based hybrid precoding for wideband mmWave MIMO backhaul/fronthaul channels. We first propose an…
Multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) offers big advantages over conventional point-to-point MIMO: it works with cheap single-antenna terminals, a rich scattering environment is not required, and resource allocation is simplified because every active terminal utilizes all of the time-frequency bins. However, multi-user MIMO, as originally envisioned with roughly equal numbers of service-antennas and terminals and frequency division duplex operation, is not a scalable technology. Massive MIMO (also known as "Large-Scale Antenna Systems", "Very Large MIMO", "Hyper MIMO", "Full-Dimensi…
Large-scale multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have the potential to bring tremendous improvements for future communication systems. Counter-intuitively, the practical issues of having uncertain channel knowledge, high propagation losses, and implementing optimal non-linear precoding are solved more-or-less automatically by enlarging system dimensions. However, the computational precoding complexity grows with the system dimensions. For example, the close-to-optimal regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding is very complicated to implement in practice, since it requires…

Even the development of fully digital Massive MIMO arrays for mmWave frequencies - once viewed pro…

The impact of hardware impairments on performance is also investigated. Simple approximations are derived that show …
How would a cellular network designed for high energy efficiency look like? To answer this fundamental question, we model cellular networks using stochastic geometry and optimize the energy efficiency with respect to the density of base stations, the number of antennas and users per cell, the transmit power levels, and the pilot reuse. The highest efficiency is neither achieved by a pure small-cell approach, nor by a pure massive MIMO solution. Interestingly, it is the combination of these approaches that provides the highest energy efficiency; small cells contributes by reducing the propagati…
This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a main enabler of the excessive throughput requirements in 5G and future generation wireless networks as they can serve many users simultaneously with high spectral and energy efficiency. To achieve this, massive MIMO systems require accurate and timely channel state information (CSI), which is acquired by a training process that involves pilot transmission, CSI estimation and feedback. This training process incurs a training overhead, which scales with the number of antennas, users and subcarriers. Reducing this training overhead in ma…

This paper investigates Cell-Free massive MIMO networks, where each access point (AP) is equipped with a hybrid transceiver, reducing the complexity and cost compared to a fully digital transceiver. Asymptotic approximations for the spectral efficiency are derived for uplink and downlink. Capitalizing on these expressions, a max-min problem is formulated to optimize the (i) analog beamformer at the APs and (ii) pilot assignment. Simulations show that the optimization of these variables substantially increases the network performance.
In this paper, we propose a novel genie chains approach to obtain information theoretic degrees of freedom (DoF) outer bounds for MIMO wireless interference networks. This new approach creates a chain of mappings from genie signals provided to a receiver to the exposed signal spaces at that receiver, which then serve as the genie signals for the next receiver in the chain subject to certain linear independence requirements, essentially converting an information theoretic DoF outer bound problem into a linear algebra problem. Several applications of the genie chains approach are presented.

This paper investigates the efficacy of two promising multi-carrier waveforms that reduce OOB emissions in combination with large-scale MIMO, namely filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) and generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM). We develop novel, low-complexity data detection algorithms for both of these wavefo…

To this aim, in this paper we employ a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing scheme with two transceivers to increase the data rate of the considered FSO system. Unlike MIMO diversity case, the performance of MIMO multiplexing is significantly affected b…

This paper focuses on the design of beamforming codebooks that maximize the average normalized beamforming gain for any underlying channel distribution. While the existing techniques use statistical channel models, we utilize a model-free data-driven approach with foundations in machine learning to generate beamforming codebooks that adapt to the surrounding propagation conditions. The key technical contribution lies in reducing the codebook design problem to an unsupervised clustering problem on a Grassmann manifold where the cluster centroids form the finite-sized beamforming codebook for th…
In this paper, we propose a full-rate full-diversity space-time block code (STBC) for 2x2 reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that require a low complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detector. We consider a transmitter equipped with a linear antenna array where each antenna element can be independently configured to create a directive radiation pattern toward a selected direction. This property of transmit antennas allow us to increase the data rate of the system, while reducing the computational complexity of the receiver. The proposed STBC achieves a coding rate of two …
In this paper, the problem of designing a linear precoder for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in conjunction with Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is addressed. First, a novel and efficient methodology to evaluate the input-output mutual information for a general Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system as well as its corresponding gradients is presented, based on the Gauss-Hermite quadrature rule. Large-scale MIMO systems have been considered as one of the possible candidates for the next-generation wireless communication technique, due to their potential to provide significant higher throughput than conventional wireless systems. For such systems, Zero-Forcing (ZF) and Conjugate Beamforming (CB) precoding have been considered as two possible practical spatial multiplexing techniques, and their average achievable sum rates have been derived on the sum power constraint. However, in practice, the transmitting power at a base station is constrained under each antenna. In this case, the opt…
The problem of the real-time multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array control when requirements on capacity performance, out-of-cell interference, and computational efficiency are simultaneously enforced is addressed by means of an innovative hybrid beamforming technique. The synthesis of the excitations of the MIMO system is first re-formulated as that of matching an ideal "hybrid" pattern fitting capacity or low-interference constraints along the angular coordinates. Then, a non-iterative processing scheme is derived for each MIMO beam where numerically-efficient synthesis techniques are …
Deploying antenna arrays with an asymptotically large aperture will be central to achieving the theoretical gains of massive MIMO in beyond-5G systems. Such extra-large MIMO (XL-MIMO) systems experience propagation conditions which are not typically observed in conventional massive MIMO systems, such as spatial non-stationarities and near-field propagation. Moreover, standard precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF), may not apply to XL-MIMO transmissions due to the prohibitive complexity associated with such a large-scale scenario. We propose two novel precoding schemes that aim at reduci…
In this paper, we propose a new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with movable antennas (MAs) to exploit the antenna position optimization for enhancing the capacity. Different from conventional MIMO systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs), the proposed system can flexibly change the positions of transmit/receive MAs, such that the MIMO channel between them is reconfigured to achieve higher capacity. We aim to characterize the capacity of MA-enabled point-to-point MIMO communication systems, by jointly optimizing the positions of transmit and receive MAs as well as…

Communications at mmWave frequencies will be a key enabler of the next generation of cellular networks, due to the multi-Gbps rate that can be achieved. However, there are still several problems that must be solved before this technology can be widely adopted, primarily associated with the interplay between the variability of mmWave links and the complexity of mobile networks. An end-to-end network simulator represents a great tool to assess the performance of any proposed solution to meet the stringent 5G requirements. In cellular communication systems, it is conventional to assume the absence of a line of sight (LoS) path between the users and their associated access points (APs). This assumption however becomes questionable in the context of recent developments in the direction of cell free (CF) massive MIMO systems. In the CF massive MIMO, the AP density is assumed to be comparable with the user density, which increases probability of existence of an LoS path between the users and their associated APs. In this paper, we analyze the performance of an uplink CF massive MIMO system, with a probabilistic LoS …
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is recognized as a promising technology for the next generation of wireless networks because of its potential to increase the spectral efficiency. In initial studies of massive MIMO, the system has been considered to be perfectly synchronized throughout the entire cells. However, perfect synchronization may be hard to attain in practice. Therefore, we study a massive MIMO system whose cells are not synchronous to each other, while transmissions in a cell are still synchronous. Block diagonalization (BD) is an attractive technique that transforms the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) channel into parallel single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) channels with zero inter-user interference (IUI). In this paper, we combine the BD technique with two deterministic vector perturbation (VP) algorithms that reduce the transmit power in MU-MIMO systems with linear precoding. These techniques are the fixed-complexity sphere encoder (FSE) and the QR-decomposition with M-algorithm encoder (QRDM-E). In contrast to the conventional BD VP technique, which is based on the sphere…
One key feature of massive multiple-input multiple-output systems is the large number of antennas and users. As a result, reducing the computational complexity of beamforming design becomes imperative. To this end, the goal of this paper is to achieve a lower complexity order than that of existing beamforming methods, via the parallel accelerated random coordinate descent (ARCD). However, it is known that ARCD is only applicable when the problem is convex, smooth, and separable. In contrast, the beamforming design problem is nonconvex, nonsmooth, and nonseparable. Despite these challenges, thi…
This paper compares the sum rates and rate regions achieved by power-domain NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access) and standard massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) techniques. We prove analytically that massive MIMO always outperforms NOMA in i.i.d.~Rayleigh fading channels, if a sufficient number of antennas are used at the base stations. The simulation results show that the crossing point occurs already when having 20-30 antennas, which is far less than what is considered for the next generation cellular networks.
In this paper, distributed user scheduling schemes are proposed for the multi-user MIMO-Y channel, where three $N_{T}$-antenna users ($N_{T}=2N,\,3N$) are selected from three clusters to exchange information via an $N_{R}$-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay ($N_{R}=3N$), and $N\geq1$ represents the number of data stream(s) of each unicast transmission within the MIMO-Y channel. The proposed schemes effectively harvest multi-user diversity (MuD) without the need of global channel state information (CSI) or centralized computations. In particular, a novel reference signal space (RSS) is prop…
To meet the goal of ten-fold increase in spectral efficiency, multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) techniques capable of achieving high spatial multiplexing gains are expected to be an essential component of fifth-generation (5G) radio access systems. This increase in multiplexing gain, made possible by equipping base stations with a large number of antennas, entails a proportional increase in channel state information (CSI) acquisition overhead. This article addresses the problem of reducing this CSI overhead by optimizing the amount of time-frequency resources allocated for cha…
There is considerable interest in the combined use of millimeter-wave (mmwave) frequencies and arrays of massive numbers of antennas (massive MIMO) for next-generation wireless communications systems. A symbiotic relationship exists between these two factors: mmwave frequencies allow for densely packed antenna arrays, and hence massive MIMO can be achieved with a small form factor; low per-antenna SNR and shadowing can be overcome with a large array gain; steering narrow beams or nulls with a large array is a good match for the line-of-sight (LOS) or near-LOS mmwave propagation environments, e…
MIMO mobile systems, with a large number of antennas at the base-station side, enable the concurrent transmission of multiple, spatially separated information streams and, therefore, enable improved network throughput and connectivity both in uplink and downlink transmissions. Traditionally, to efficiently facilitate such MIMO transmissions, linear base-station processing is adopted, that translates the MIMO channel into several single-antenna channels. Still, while such approaches are relatively easy to implement, they can leave on the table a significant amount of unexploited MIMO capacity. …

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the high-resolution channel information (CSI) is required at the base station (BS) to ensure optimal performance, especially in the case of multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems. In the absence of channel reciprocity in frequency division duplex (FDD) systems, the user needs to send the CSI to the BS. Often the large overhead associated with this CSI feedback in FDD systems becomes the bottleneck in improving the system performance. In this paper, we propose an AI-based CSI feedback based on an auto-encoder architecture that encodes the CSI at UE i…
