Communications at mmWave frequencies will be a key enabler of the next generation of cellular networks, due to the multi-Gbps rate that can be achieved. However, there are still several problems that must be solved before this technology can be widely adopted, primarily associated with the interplay between the variability of mmWave links and the complexity of mobile networks. An end-to-end network simulator represents a great tool to assess the performance of any proposed solution to meet the stringent 5G requirements. Given the criticality of channel propagation characteristics at higher frequencies, we present our implementation of the 3GPP channel model for the 6-100 GHz band for the ns-3 end-to-end 5G mmWave module, and detail its associated MIMO beamforming architecture.
The use of base stations (BSs) and access points (APs) with a large number of antennas, called Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output), is a key technology for increasing the capacity of 5G networks and beyond. While originally conceived for conventional sub-6GHz frequencies, Massive MIMO (mMIMO) is ideal also for frequency bands in the range 30-300 GHz, known as millimeter wave (mmWave). Despite conceptual similarities, the way in which mMIMO can be exploited in these bands is radically different, due to their specific propagation behaviors and hardware characteristics. This paper revie…
If we assume line-of-sight propagation and perfect channel state information at the base station -- consistent with slow moving terminals -- then a direct performance comparison between single-cell Massive MIMO at PCS and mmWave frequency bands is straightforward and highly illuminating. Line-of-sight propagation is considered favorable for mmWave because of minimal attenuation, and its facilitation of hybrid beamforming to reduce the required number of active transceivers. We quantify the number of mmWave (60 GHz) service antennas that are needed to duplicate the performance of a specified nu…
Given the high throughput requirement for 5G, merging millimeter wave technologies and multi-user MIMO seems a very promising strategy. As hardware limitations impede to realize a full digital architecture, hybrid MIMO architectures, using digital precoding and phased antenna arrays, are considered a feasible solution to implement multi-user MIMO at millimeter wave. However, real channel propagation and hardware non-idealities can significantly degrade the performance of such systems. Experimenting the new architecture is thus crucial to confirm and to support system design. Nevertheless, hybr…
Beamforming is indispensable in the operation of 60-GHz millimeter-wave directional multi-gigabit Wi-Fi. Simple power method and its extensions enable the transmitting and receiving antenna arrays to form a beam for single spatial stream. To further improve the spectral efficiency in future 60-GHz directional Wi-Fi, alternating least square (ALS) algorithm can form multiple beams between the transmitter and receiver for multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) operations. For both shared and split MIMO architecture, the ALS beamforming algorithm can be operated in both frequency-flat and frequency-sele…
Sixth generation (6G) cellular systems are expected to extend the operational range to sub-Terahertz (THz) frequencies between 100 and 300 GHz due to the broad unexploited spectrum therein. A proper channel model is needed to accurately describe spatial and temporal channel characteristics and faithfully create channel impulse responses at sub-THz frequencies. This paper studies the channel spatial statistics such as the number of spatial clusters and cluster power distribution based on recent radio propagation measurements conducted at 142 GHz in an urban microcell (UMi) scenario. For the 28 …
MIMO systems in the lower part of the millimeter-wave spectrum band (i.e., below 28 GHz) do not exhibit enough directivity and selectively, as their counterparts in higher bands of the spectrum (i.e., above 60 GHz), and thus still suffer from the detrimental effect of interference, on the system sum-rate. As such systems exhibit large numbers of antennas and short coherence times for the channel, traditional methods of distributed coordination are ill-suited, and the resulting communication overhead would offset the gains of coordination. In this work, we propose algorithms for tackling the su…

Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) is one of the key use-cases for the development of the new standard 5G New Radio for the next generation of mobile wireless networks. Large-scale antenna arrays, a.k.a. Massive MIMO, the usage of carrier frequencies in the range 10-100 GHz, the so-called millimeter wave (mm-wave) band, and the network densification with the introduction of small-sized cells are the three technologies that will permit implementing eMBB services and realizing the Gbit/s mobile wireless experience. This paper is focused on the massive MIMO technology; initially conceived for conve…
Research and development on the next generation wireless systems, namely 5G, has experienced explosive growth in recent years. In the physical layer (PHY), the massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technique and the use of high GHz frequency bands are two promising trends for adoption. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands such as 28 GHz, 38 GHz, 64 GHz, and 71 GHz, which were previously considered not suitable for commercial cellular networks, will play an important role in 5G. Currently, most 5G research deals with the algorithms and implementations of modulation and coding schemes, new spa…
Massive MIMO has been the subject of intense interest in both academia and industry for the past few years. 3GPP standardization for cellular systems have adopted the principles of massive MIMO and categorized the use of large rectangular planar arrays at the base station as full-dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) to operate in both TDD and FDD. Operating a large antenna array base station requires the system to overcome several implementation challenges caused by hardware impairments making practical solutions non-ideal and expensive to deploy at scale. It is important to learn from existing challenges…
Massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) technology is vital in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands to obtain large array gains. However, there are practical challenges, such as high hardware cost and power consumption in such systems. A promising solution to these problems is to adopt a hybrid beamforming architecture. This architecture has a much lower number of transceiver (TRx) chains than the total antenna number, resulting in cost- and energy-efficient systems. In this paper, we present a real-time mmWave (28 GHz) massive MIMO testbed with hybrid beamforming. This testbed has a 64-antenna/1…
A fully-digital wideband joint communication-radar (JCR) with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) architecture at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band will enable high joint communication and radar performance with enhanced design flexibility. A quantized receiver with few-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) will enable a practical JCR solution with reduced power consumption for futuristic portable devices and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we present a joint communication-radar proof-of-concept platform, named JCR70, to evaluate and demonstrate the performance of these JCR systems u…
A method for reconstructing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel correlation matrices from lower dimensional channel measurements is presented. Exploiting the symmetry of correlation matrix structure enables reproducing higher dimensional MIMO channel matrices from available lower order measurements. This leads to practically important applications allowing prediction of higher dimensional MIMO system capacity. In particular, we study Kronecker-type MIMO channels suitable for reconstructing full channel matrices from partial information about transmit-receive fading in spatial and pol…
Modern MIMO communication systems are almost exclusively designed under the assumption of locally plane wavefronts over antenna arrays. This is known as the far-field approximation and is soundly justified at sub-6-GHz frequencies at most relevant transmission ranges. However, when higher frequencies and shorter transmission ranges are used, the wave curvature over the array is no longer negligible, and arrays operate in the so-called radiative near-field region. This letter aims to show that the classical far-field approximation may significantly underestimate the achievable spectral efficien…
In wireless communication systems, dual-polarized (DP) instead of single-polarized (SP) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is used to improve the spectral efficiency under certain conditions on the channel and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In order to identify these conditions, we first propose a novel channel model for DP mobile Ricean MIMO channels for which statistical channel parameters are readily obtained from a moment-based channel decomposition. Second, we derive an approximation of the mutual information (MI), which can be expressed as a function of those statistica…
The use of mmWave frequencies is one of the key strategies to achieve the fascinating 1000x increase in the capacity of future 5G wireless systems. While for traditional sub-6 GHz cellular frequencies several well-developed statistical channel models are available for system simulation, similar tools are not available for mmWave frequencies, thus preventing a fair comparison of independently developed transmission and reception schemes. In this paper we provide a simple albeit accurate statistical procedure for the generation of a clustered MIMO channel model operating at mmWaves, for both the…
Multiple antenna systems have been extensively used by standards designing multi-gigabit communication systems operating in bandwidth of several GHz. In this paper, we study the use of transmitter (Tx) beamforming techniques to improve the performance of a MIMO system with a low precision ADC. We motivate an approach to use eigenmode transmit beamforming (which imposes a diagonal structure in the complete MIMO system) and use an eigenmode power allocation which minimizes the uncoded BER of the finite precision system. Although we cannot guarantee optimality of this approach, we observe that ev…
Millimeter-wave multi-input multi-output (mm-Wave MIMO) systems are one of the candidate schemes for 5G wireless standardization efforts. In this context, the main contributions of this article are three-fold. 1) We describe parallel sets of measurements at identical transmit-receive location pairs with 2.9, 29 and 61 GHz carrier frequencies in indoor office, shopping mall, and outdoor settings. These measurements provide insights on propagation, blockage and material penetration losses, and the key elements necessary in system design to make mm-Wave systems viable in practice. 2) One of these…
Providing consistently high wireless capacity is becoming increasingly important to support the applications required by future digital enterprises. In this paper, we propose Eigen-direction-aware ZF (EDA-ZF) with partial coordination among base stations (BSs) and distributed interference suppression as a practical approach to achieve this objective. We compare our solution with Zero Forcing (ZF), entailing neither BS coordination or inter-cell interference mitigation, and Network MIMO (NeMIMO), where full BS coordination enables centralized inter-cell interference management. We also evaluate…
This paper presents a 3-D statistical channel model of the impulse response with small-scale spatially correlated random coefficients for multi-element transmitter and receiver antenna arrays, derived using the physically-based time cluster - spatial lobe (TCSL) clustering scheme. The small-scale properties of multipath amplitudes are modeled based on 28 GHz outdoor millimeter-wave small-scale local area channel measurements. The wideband channel capacity is evaluated by considering measurement-based Rician-distributed voltage amplitudes, and the spatial autocorrelation of multipath amplitudes…
Massive MIMO, also known as very-large MIMO or large-scale antenna systems, is a new technique that potentially can offer large network capacities in multi-user scenarios. With a massive MIMO system, we consider the case where a base station equipped with a large number of antenna elements simultaneously serves multiple single-antenna users in the same time-frequency resource. So far, investigations are mostly based on theoretical channels with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) complex Gaussian coefficients, i.e., i.i.d. Rayleigh channels. Here, we investigate how massive MIMO p…
One of the key features of next generation wireless communication systems will be the use of frequencies in the range 10-100GHz (aka mmWave band) in densely populated indoor and outdoor scenarios. Due to the reduced wavelength, antenna arrays with a large number of antennas can be packed in very small volumes, making thus it possible to consider, at least in principle, communication links wherein not only the base-station, but also the user device, are equipped with very large antenna arrays. We denote this configuration as a "doubly-massive" MIMO wireless link. This paper introduces the conce…
In multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, channel correlation is detrimental to system performance. We demonstrate that widely used, yet overly simplified, correlation models that generate identical correlation profiles for each terminal tend to severely underestimate the system performance. In sharp contrast, more physically motivated models that capture variations in the power angular spectra across multiple terminals, generate diverse correlation patterns. This has a significant impact on the system performance. Assuming correlated Rayleigh fading and downlink zero-forc…
The stationarity region, i.e., the area in which the statistics of a propagation channel remain constant, is an important measure of the propagation channel, and essential for efficient system design. This paper presents what is to our knowledge the first extensive measurement campaign for measuring the stationarity region of MIMO mm-wave channels. Using a novel 28 GHz phased-array sounder with high phase stability, we present results in an urban microcell LoS, and LOS to NLOS transition region scenario, for the stationarity region of shadowing, power delay profile, and the angular power spect…
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) and massive MIMO have been proposed for next generation wireless systems. However, there are many open problems for the implementation of those technologies. In particular, beamforming is necessary in mm-wave systems in order to counter high propagation losses. However, conventional beamsteering is not always appropriate in rich scattering multipath channels with frequency selective fading, such as those found in indoor environments. In this context, time-reversal (TR) is considered a promising beamforming technique for such mm-wave massive MIMO systems. In this paper…
Massive MIMO can greatly increase both spectral and transmit-energy efficiency. This is achieved by allowing the number of antennas and RF chains to grow very large. However, the challenges include high system complexity and hardware energy consumption. Here we investigate the possibilities to reduce the required number of RF chains, by performing antenna selection. While this approach is not a very effective strategy for theoretical independent Rayleigh fading channels, a substantial reduction in the number of RF chains can be achieved for real massive MIMO channels, without significant perfo…
Future cellular systems based on the use of above-6 GHz frequencies, the so-called millimeter wave (mmWave) bandwidths, will heavily rely on the use of antenna arrays both at the transmitter and at the receiver, possibly with a large number of elements. For complexity reasons, fully digital precoding and postcoding structures may turn out to be unfeasible, and thus suboptimal structures, making use of simplified hardware and a limited number of RF chains, have been investigated. This paper considers and makes a comparative assessment, both from a spectral efficiency and energy efficiency point…
With the congestion of the sub-6 GHz spectrum, the interest in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating on millimeter wave spectrum grows. In order to reduce the power consumption of such massive MIMO systems, hybrid analog/digital transceivers and application of low-resolution digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital converters have been recently proposed. In this work, we investigate the energy efficiency of quantized hybrid transmitters equipped with a fully/partially-connected phase-shifting network composed of active/passive phase-shifters and compare it to that of quant…
The first measured results for massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) performance in a line-of-sight (LOS) scenario with moderate mobility are presented, with 8 users served by a 100 antenna base Station (BS) at 3.7 GHz. When such a large number of channels dynamically change, the inherent propagation and processing delay has a critical relationship with the rate of change, as the use of outdated channel information can result in severe detection and precoding inaccuracies. For the downlink (DL) in particular, a time division duplex (TDD) configuration synonymous with massive MIMO depl…
Reliability and latency challenges in future mixed sub-6 GHz/millimeter wave (mmWave) fifth generation (5G) cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks is to guarantee a fast radio resource management in both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), while tackling the corresponding propagation imbalance that may arise in blockage situations. In this context, we introduce a semi-blind UL/DL decoupling concept where, after its initial activation, the central processing unit (CPU) gathers measurements of the Rician $K$-factor---reflecting the line-of-sight (LOS) condition of the user e…
Using out-of-band (OOB) side-information has recently been shown to accelerate beam selection in single-user millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO communications. In this paper, we propose a novel OOB-aided beam selection framework for a mmWave uplink multi-user system. In particular, we exploit spatial information extracted from lower (sub-6 GHz) bands in order to assist with an inter-user coordination scheme at mmWave bands. To enforce coordination, we propose an exchange protocol exploiting device-to-device communications, where low-rate beam-related information is exchanged between the mob…
Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) is no longer a "wild" or "promising" concept for future cellular networks - in 2018 it became a reality. Base stations (BSs) with 64 fully digital transceiver chains were commercially deployed in several countries, the key ingredients of Massive MIMO have made it into the 5G standard, the signal processing methods required to achieve unprecedented spectral efficiency have been developed, and the limitation due to pilot contamination has been resolved. Even the development of fully digital Massive MIMO arrays for mmWave frequencies - once viewed pro…
This paper considers the uplink pilot overhead in a time division duplexing (TDD) massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) mobile systems. A common scenario of conventional massive MIMO systems is a Base Station (BS) serving all user terminals (UTs) in the cell with the same TDD frame format that fits the coherence interval of the worst-case scenario of user mobility (e.g. a moving train with velocity 300 Km/s). Furthermore, the BS has to estimate all the channels each time-slot for all users even for those with long coherence intervals. In fact, within the same cell, sensors or pedestria…
Since the seminal paper by Marzetta from 2010, Massive MIMO has changed from being a theoretical concept with an infinite number of antennas to a practical technology. The key concepts are adopted in 5G and base stations (BSs) with $M=64$ full-digital transceivers have been commercially deployed in sub-6\,GHz bands. The fast progress was enabled by many solid research contributions of which the vast majority assume spatially uncorrelated channels and signal processing schemes developed for single-cell operation. These assumptions make the performance analysis and optimization of Massive MIMO t…

In this paper, we implement hybrid Woodward-Lawson-Neural Networks and weighted Fourier method to synthesize antenna arrays. The neural networks (NN) is applied here to simplify the modeling of MIMO antenna arrays by assessing phases. The main problem is obviously to find optimal weights of the linear antenna array elements giving radiation pattern with minimum sidelobe level (SLL) and hence ameliorating the antenna array performance. To attain this purpose, an antenna array for reliable Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) applications with frequency at 2.45 GHz is implemented. To validate t…
It is common practice in wireless communications to assume strict or wide-sense stationarity of the wireless channel in time and frequency. While this approximation has some physical justification, it is only valid inside certain time-frequency regions. This paper presents an elaborate characterization of the non-stationarity of wireless dual-polarized channels in time. The evaluation is based on urban macrocell measurements performed at 2.53 GHz. In order to define local quasi-stationarity (LQS) regions, i.e., regions in which the change of certain channel statistics is deemed insignificant, …
In this paper, we present a novel real-time MIMO channel sounder for 28 GHz. Until now, the common practice to investigate the directional characteristics of millimeter-wave channels has been using a rotating horn antenna. The sounder presented here is capable of performing horizontal and vertical beam steering with the help of phased arrays. Thanks to fast beam-switching capability, the proposed sounder can perform measurements that are directionally resolved both at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) as fast as 1.44 milliseconds compared to the minutes or even hours required for rotating…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication operated in frequency bands between 30 and 300 GHz has attracted extensive attention due to the potential ability of offering orders of magnitude greater bandwidths combined with further gains via beamforming and spatial multiplexing from multi-element antenna arrays. MmWave system may exploit the hybrid analog and digital precoding to achieve simultaneously the diversity, array and multiplexing gain with a lower cost of implementation. Motivated by this, in this paper, we investigate the design of hybrid precoder and combiner with sub-connected architect…
In this paper, we obtain and study typical beam entropy values for millimetre wave (mm-wave) channel models using the NYUSIM simulator for frequencies up to 100 GHz for fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G cellular communication systems. The beam entropy is used to quantify sparse MIMO channel randomness in beamspace. Lower relative beam entropy channels are suitable for memory-assisted statistically-ranked (MarS) and hybrid radio frequency (RF) beam training algorithms. High beam entropies can potentially be advantageous for low overhead secured radio communications by generating cryptographic…
Benefiting from tens of GHz bandwidth, terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology to provide ultra-high speed data rates for future 6G wireless systems. To compensate for the serious propagation attenuation of THz signals, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hybrid precoding can be utilized to generate directional beams with high array gains. However, the standard hybrid precoding architecture based on frequency-independent phase-shifters cannot cope with the beam split effect in THz massive MIMO systems, where the directional beams will split into …
Achieving high bit rates is the main goal of wireless technologies like 5G and beyond. This translates to obtaining high spectral efficiencies using large number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver (single user massive multiple input multiple output or SU-MMIMO). It is possible to have a large number of antennas in the mobile handset at mm-wave frequencies in the range $30 - 300$ GHz due to the small antenna size. In this work, we investigate the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of SU-MMIMO in two scenarios (a) using serially concatenated turbo code (SCTC) in uncorrelated channel and (…
All-digital basestation (BS) architectures for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO), which equip each radio-frequency chain with dedicated data converters, have advantages in spectral efficiency, flexibility, and baseband-processing simplicity over hybrid analog-digital solutions. For all-digital architectures to be competitive with hybrid solutions in terms of power consumption, novel signal-processing methods and baseband architectures are necessary. In this paper, we demonstrate that adapting the resolution of the analog-to-digital converters …
This paper focuses at the investigation of the degree of orthogonality of channels of multiple users in densely populated indoor and outdoor scenarios. For this purpose, a statistical millimeter wave (mmwave) MIMO channel simulator is carefully designed using state of the art channel models. At the mmwave frequencies, human/vehicular mobility around the mobile users may partially or completely block the communication link. This give rise to the consideration of new channel modeling parameter i.e. probability of a user to be in LOS dynamics. Higher line of sight (LOS) probabilities may increase…
Since the introduction of fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15, swift progress has been made to evolve 5G with 3GPP Release 18 emerging.
