In this paper, we modify the Newton-Secant method with third order of convergence for finding multiple roots of nonlinear equations. Per iteration this method requires two evaluations of the function and one evaluation of its first derivative. This method has the efficiency index equal to $3^{\frac{1}{3}}\approx 1.44225$. We describe the analysis of the proposed method along with numerical experiments including comparison with existing methods. Moreover, the dynamics of the proposed method are shown with some comparisons to the other existing methods.

Quasi-Newton techniques approximate the Newton step by estimating the Hessian using the so-called secant equations. Some of these methods compute the Hessian using several secant equations but produce non-symmetric updates. Other quasi-Newton schemes, such as BFGS, enforce symmetry but cannot satisfy more than one secant equation. We propose a new type of quasi-Newton symmetric update using several secant equations in a least-squares sense. Our approach generalizes and unifies the design of quasi-Newton updates and satisfies provable robustness guarantees.
In this paper, we introduce a new variant of the BFGS method designed to perform well when gradient measurements are corrupted by noise. We show that by treating the secant condition with a penalty method approach motivated by regularized least squares estimation, one can smoothly interpolate between updating the inverse Hessian approximation with the original BFGS update formula and not updating the inverse Hessian approximation. Furthermore, we find the curvature condition is smoothly relaxed as the interpolation moves towards not updating the inverse Hessian approximation, disappearing enti…
In large-scale optimization, when either forming or storing Hessian matrices are prohibitively expensive, quasi-Newton methods are often used in lieu of Newton's method because they only require first-order information to approximate the true Hessian. Multipoint symmetric secant (MSS) methods can be thought of as generalizations of quasi-Newton methods in that they attempt to impose additional requirements on their approximation of the Hessian. Given an initial Hessian approximation, MSS methods generate a sequence of possibly-indefinite matrices using rank-2 updates to solve nonconvex unconst…
We propose a new modification of Newton iteration for finding some nonnegative Z-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor. The method has local quadratic convergence to a nonnegative eigenpair of a nonnegative tensor, under the usual assumption guaranteeing the local quadratic convergence of the original Newton iteration.
In this work we present a fast, globally convergent, iterative algorithm for computing the asymptotically stable states of nonlinear large--scale systems of quadratic autonomous Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) modeling, e.g., the dynamic of complex chemical reaction networks. Towards this aim, we reformulate the problem as a box--constrained optimization problem where the roots of a set of nonlinear equations need to be determined. Then, we propose to use a projected Newton's approach combined with a gradient descent algorithm so that every limit point of the sequence generated by the o…
In this paper we present in detail Newton's method and its modification, based on the Continuous analog of Newton's method for computing periodic orbits of the planar three-body problem. The linear system at each step of the method is formed by solving a system of ODEs with the multiple precision Taylor series method. We consider zero angular momentum symmetric initial configuration with parallel velocities, bodies with equal masses and relatively short periods. Taking candidates for the correction method with greater return proximity as usual and correcting with the modified Newton's method, …
Tikhonov regularization is a popular approach to obtain a meaningful solution for ill-conditioned linear least squares problems. A relatively simple way of choosing a good regularization parameter is given by Morozov's discrepancy principle. However, most approaches require the solution of the Tikhonov problem for many different values of the regularization parameter, which is computationally demanding for large scale problems. We propose a new and efficient algorithm which simultaneously solves the Tikhonov problem and finds the corresponding regularization parameter such that the discrepancy…
Finding the stationary states of a free energy functional is an important problem in phase field crystal (PFC) models. Many efforts have been devoted for designing numerical schemes with energy dissipation and mass conservation properties. However, most existing approaches are time-consuming due to the requirement of small effective step sizes. In this paper, we discretize the energy functional and propose efficient numerical algorithms for solving the constrained non-convex minimization problem. A class of gradient based approaches, which is the so-called adaptive accelerated Bregman proximal…
