Physics beyond the Standard Model predicts the possible existence of new particles that can be searched at the low energy frontier in the sub-eV range. The OSQAR photon regeneration experiment looks for "Light Shining through a Wall" from the quantum oscillation of optical photons into "Weakly Interacting Sub-eV Particles", such as axion or Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), in a 9 T transverse magnetic field over the unprecedented length of $2 \times 14.3$ m. In 2014, this experiment has been run with an outstanding sensitivity, using an 18.5 W continuous wave laser emitting in the green at the single wavelength of 532 nm. No regenerated photons have been detected after the wall, pushing the limits for the existence of axions and ALPs down to an unprecedented level for such a type of laboratory experiment. The di-photon couplings of possible pseudo-scalar and scalar ALPs can be constrained in the nearly massless limit to be less than $3.5\cdot 10^{-8}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $3.2\cdot 10^{-8}$ GeV$^{-1}$, respectively, at 95% Confidence Level.
Recently, the PVLAS collaboration has reported an anomalously large rotation of the polarization of light in the presence of a magnetic field. As a possible explanation they consider the existence of a light pseudoscalar particle coupled to two photons. In this note, we propose a method of independently testing this result by using a high-energy photon regeneration experiment (the X-ray analogue of "invisible light shining through walls") using the synchrotron X-rays from a free-electron laser (FEL). With such an experiment the region of parameter space implied by PVLAS could be probed in a ma…
The need for purely laboratory-based light pseudoscalar particles searches has been emphasized many times in the literature, since astrophysical bounds on these particles rely on several assumptions to calculate the flux produced in stellar plasmas. In this paper we study the use of light from synchrotron accelerators as a source for a photon regeneration experiment also know as "light shining through a wall". Such an experiment can significantly improve present limits on the pseudoscalar particle mass and the pseudoscalar-photon coupling constant obtained from laser experiments. This is possi…
We conduct the first ``light-shining-through-wall" (LSW) search for dark photons using two state-of-the-art high quality-factor superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities and report the results of its pathfinder run. Our new experimental setup enables improvements in sensitivity over previous searches and covers new dark photon parameter space. We design delicate calibration and measurement protocols to utilize the high-$Q$ setup at Dark SRF. Using cavities operating at $1.3 \ \text{GHz}$, we establish a new exclusion limit for kinetic mixing as small as {$ε= 1.6\times 10^{-9}$} and provid…
The OSQAR photon regeneration experiment searches for pseudoscalar and scalar axion-like particles by the method of "Light Shining Through a Wall", based on the assumption that these weakly interacting sub-eV particles couple to two photons to give rise to quantum oscillations with optical photons in strong magnetic field. No excess of events has been observed, which constrains the di-photon coupling strength of both pseudoscalar and scalar particles down to $5.7 \cdot 10^{-8}$ GeV$^{-1}$ in the massless limit. This result is the most stringent constraint on the di-photon coupling strength eve…
GammeV is an experiment conducted at Fermilab that employs the light shining through a wall technique to search for axion-like particles and employs a particle in a jar technique to search for dilaton-like chameleon particles. We obtain limits on the coupling of photons to an axion-like particle that extend previous limits for both scalars and pseudoscalars in the milli-eV mass range. We are able to exclude the axion-like particle interpretation of the anomalous PVLAS 2006 result by more than 5 standard deviations. We also present results on a search for chameleons and set limits on their poss…
New light pseudoscalars, such as axion-like particles, appear in many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model and provide an exciting target for present and future experiments. We study the experimental sensitivity for such particles by revising the CHARM exclusion contour, updating bounds from LHCb and presenting prospects for NA62 and SHiP. We first consider a simplified model of a light pseudoscalar $A$ and then propose a model-independent approach applicable to any spin-0 boson light enough to be produced in B-meson decays. As illustration, we provide upper bounds on $\text{BR}(B \…
A search is presented for a heavy pseudoscalar boson A decaying to a Z boson and a Higgs boson with mass of 125 GeV. In the final state considered, the Higgs boson decays to a bottom quark and antiquark, and the Z boson decays either into a pair of electrons, muons, or neutrinos. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with the background expectations. Exclusion limits are set…
A search for new physics is presented in final states with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), jets identified as originating from b quarks, and missing transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}^\text{miss}$). The search uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV amounting to 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected using the CMS detector in 2016. Hypothetical signal events are efficiently separated from the dominant $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ background with requirements on $p_\mathrm{T}^\text{miss}$ and transverse mass variables. No significant deviatio…
We report the first results of the GammeV experiment, a search for milli-eV mass particles with axion-like couplings to two photons. The search is performed using a "light shining through a wall" technique where incident photons oscillate into new weakly interacting particles that are able to pass through the wall and subsequently regenerate back into detectable photons. The oscillation baseline of the apparatus is variable, thus allowing probes of different values of particle mass. We find no excess of events above background and are able to constrain the two-photon couplings of possible new …

The light-by-light (LBL) scattering with initial polarized Compton backscattered photons at the CLIC, induced by axion-like particles (ALPs), is investigated. The total cross sections are calculated, assuming CP-even coupling of the pseudoscalar ALP to photons. The 95\% C.L. exclusion region for the ALP mass $m_a$ and its coupling constant $f$ is presented. The results are compared with previously obtained CLIC bounds for the unpolarized case. It is shown that the bounds on $f$ for the polarized beams in the region $m_a = 1000 \mathrm{\ GeV} - 2000 \mathrm{\ GeV}$, with the collision energy 30…
We examine the impact of the expected reach of the LHC and the XENON1T experiments on the parameter space of the minimal classically scale invariant extension of the standard model (SM), where all the mass scales are induced dynamically by means of the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In this framework, the SM content is enlarged by the addition of one complex gauge singlet scalar with a scale invariant and $CP$-symmetric potential. The massive pseudoscalar component, protected by the $CP$-symmetry, forms a viable dark matter candidate, and three flavors of the right-handed Majorana neutrinos are i…
A search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson as well as searches for dark matter candidates, produced together with a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson, are presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, delivered by the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. Assuming Standard Model cross-sections for $ZH$ production, the observed (expected) upper limit on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to invisible particles is found to be 19% (19%) at the 95% confidence level. E…

The standard model (SM) production of four top quarks ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$) in proton-proton collision is studied by the CMS Collaboration. The data sample, collected during the 2016-2018 data taking of the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are required to contain two same-sign charged leptons (electrons or muons) or at least three leptons, and jets. The observed and expected significances for the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$ signal are respectively 2.6 and 2.7 standard deviations, and the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\ba…
A data sample of events from proton-proton collisions with two isolated same-sign leptons, missing transverse momentum, and jets is studied in a search for signatures of new physics phenomena by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns, and a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The properties of the events are consistent with expectations from standard model processes, and no excess yield is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on cross sections for the pair production of gluinos, squarks, and same-sign top …
Recently, the PVLAS collaboration has reported evidence for an anomalously large rotation of the polarization of light generated in vacuum in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. This may be explained through the production of a new light spin-zero particle coupled to two photons. In this Letter of Intent, we propose to test this hypothesis by setting up a photon regeneration experiment which exploits the photon beam of the Vacuum-UltraViolet Free-Electron Laser VUV-FEL, sent along the transverse magnetic field of a linear arrangement of dipole magnets of size B L ~ 30 Tm. The high pho…
A search for dark matter is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson decaying either to a pair of bottom quarks or to a pair of photons. The data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected in 2015 with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. Results are interpreted in the context of a Z'-two-Higgs-doublet model, where the gauge symmetry of the standard model is extended to a U(1)[Z'] group, with a new massive Z' gauge boson, and the Higgs sector is extended with four…
The search for evidence of extended electroweak symmetry breaking has entered a new phase with the discovery of a Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs at the LHC. The measurement of Higgs couplings and direct searches for additional scalars provide complementary avenues for the discovery of new degrees of freedom. This complementarity is particularly sharp in two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs) where the couplings of the SM-like Higgs may be directly related to the LHC signals of additional scalars. In this work we develop a strategy for searching for the second Higgs doublet given the LHC signals of t…
Evidence for the light-by-light scattering process, $γγ$ $\to$ $γγ$, in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV is reported. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 $μ$b$^{-1}$ recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering processes are selected in events with two photons exclusively produced, each with transverse energy E$_\mathrm{T}^γ$ $>$ 2 GeV, pseudorapidity $|η^γ|$ $\lt$ 2.4, diphoton invariant mass $m^{γγ}$ $\gt$ 5 GeV, diphoton transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}^…
