We compute the virial coefficients, the contact parameters, and the momentum distribution of a strongly interacting three-dimensional Bose gas by means of a virial expansion up to third order in the fugacity, which takes into account three-body correlations exactly. Our results characterize the nondegenerate regime of the interacting Bose gas, where the thermal wavelength is smaller than the interparticle spacing but the scattering length may be arbitrarily large. We observe a rapid variation of the third virial coefficient as the scattering length is tuned across the three-atom and the atom-dimer thresholds. The momentum distribution at unitarity displays a universal high-momentum tail with a log-periodic momentum dependence, which is a direct signature of Efimov physics. We provide a quantitative description of the momentum distribution at high momentum as measured by P. Makotyn et al. [Nat. Phys. 10, 116 (2014)], and our calculations indicate that the lowest trimer state might not be occupied in the experiment. Our results allow for a spectroscopy of Efimov states in the unitary limit.
Ultracold atomic gases have developed into prime systems for experimental studies of Efimov three-body physics and related few-body phenomena, which occur in the universal regime of resonant interactions. In the last few years, many important breakthroughs have been achieved, confirming basic predictions of universal few-body theory and deepening our understanding of such systems. We review the basic ideas along with the fast experimental developments of the field, focussing on ultracold cesium gases as a well-investigated model system. Triatomic Efimov resonances, atom-dimer Efimov resonances…
In an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate quenched to the unitary regime, we predict the sequential formation of a significant fraction of condensed pairs and triples. At short-distances, we demonstrate the two-body and Efimovian character of the condensed pairs and triples, respectively. As the system evolves, the size of the condensed pairs and triples becomes comparable to the interparticle distance, such that many-body effects become significant. The structure of the condensed triples depends on the relative size of Efimov states to density scales. Unexpectedly, we find universal condensed tri…
A few-body properties of spinless Bose particles interacting via the contact three-body potential in geometries with fractional dimensions $1<d<2$ are considered. In the four-body sector at three-body resonance we predict the existence of infinite tower of the Efimov bound states, and a similar behavior is found in the five-body problem. It is shown that a ratio of the high-energy levels in these two sectors is a universal constant. The consequences of emergence of the Efimov physics on the many-body behavior are briefly discussed.
We investigate the zero-temperature properties of an impurity particle interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), using a variational wavefunction that includes up to two Bogoliubov excitations of the BEC. This allows one to capture three-body Efimov physics, as well as to recover the first non-trivial terms in the weak-coupling expansion. We show that the energy and quasiparticle residue of the dressed impurity (polaron) are significantly lowered by three-body correlations, even for weak interactions where there is no Efimov trimer state in a vacuum. For increasing attraction between …
We study the effect of Efimov physics (in the few-body sector) to the spectral response of Bose polaron, a many-body system consisting of an impurity immersed in a bath of bosonic atoms. We find that the Efimov correlation can be greatly enhanced by increasing the mass ratio between the bosons and the impurity, which results in visible signatures in the rf spectrum of the polaron. Using a diagrammatic approach up to the third-order virial expansion, we show how the mass imbalance and the enhanced three-body effect modify the line shape and the width of the polaron spectrum. Moreover, we study …
The Bose polaron is a quasi-particle of an impurity dressed by surrounding bosons. In few-body physics, it is known that two identical bosons and a third distinguishable particle can form a sequence of Efimov bound states in the vicinity of inter-species scattering resonance. On the other hand, in the Bose polaron system with an impurity atom embedded in many bosons, no signature of Efimov physics has been reported in the existing spectroscopy measurements up to date. In this work, we propose that a large mass imbalance between a light impurity and heavy bosons can help produce visible signatu…
The well-known Yukawa and Efimov potentials are two different mediated interaction potentials. The first one arises in quantum field theory from the exchange of virtual particles. The second one is mediated by a real particle resonantly interacting with two other particles. This Letter shows how two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit both phenomena. For a weak impurity-boson attractive interactionattraction with the condensate, the two impurities form two polarons that interact through a weak Yukawa attraction mediated by virtual excitations. For a resonant attractio…
A new class of universal "three-body" bound states has been recently predicted theoretically for identical fermions interacting at p-wave resonance in two dimensions. This phenomenon is called the super Efimov effect since the binding energies of the states follow a intriguing double exponential scaling. However, experimental resolution of this scaling is expected to meet formidable challenges. In this work, we introduce a new thermodynamic quantity, the three-body contact $C_θ$, to quantify three-body correlations in a two dimensional gas composed of the resonantly interacting fermions; the c…
Since the Efimov effect was introduced in 1970, a detailed theoretical understanding of Efimov physics has been developed in the few-body context. However, it has proven to be challenging to describe the role Efimov-type correlations play in many-body systems such as quenched or collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). To study the impact the Efimov effect can have in such scenarios, we consider a light impurity immersed in a weakly interacting BEC, forming a Bose polaron. In this case, the higher-order correlations are localized around the impurity, making it more feasible to develop a th…
In quantum physics, Efimov trimers are bound states of three particles that fall apart like Borromean rings when one of them is removed. Initially predicted in nuclear physics, these striking bosonic states are hard to observe, but the "unitary" interactions at which they form is commonly realized in current cold atoms experiments. There, they set the stage for a new class of universal physics: Two-body interactions are all but invisible, but three-body effects allow the emergence of a largely uncharted new world of many-particle bound states. Three-particle systems were characterized theoreti…

Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…

We study the quench of a degenerate ultracold Bose gas to the unitary regime, where interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. We lay the foundations of a cumulant theory able to capture simultaneously the three-body Efimov effect and ergodic evolution. After an initial period of rapid quantum depletion, a universal prethermal stage is established characterized by a kinetic temperature and an emergent Bogoliubov dispersion law while the microscopic degrees of freedom remain far-from-equilibrium. Integrability is then broken by higher-order interaction terms in the many-body Ha…
We convert a strongly interacting ultracold Bose gas into a mixture of atoms and molecules by sweeping the interactions from resonant to weak. By analyzing the decay dynamics of the molecular gas, we show that in addition to Feshbach dimers it contains Efimov trimers. Typically around 8\% of the total atomic population is bound into trimers, identified by their density-independent lifetime of about 100~$μ$s. The lifetime of the Feshbach dimers shows a density dependence due to inelastic atom-dimer collisions, in agreement with theoretical calculations. We also vary the density of the gas acros…
Universality is a powerful concept in physics, allowing one to construct physical descriptions of systems that are independent of the precise microscopic details or energy scales. A prime example is the Fermi gas with unitarity limited interactions, whose universal properties are relevant to systems ranging from atomic gases at microkelvin temperatures to the inner crust of neutron stars. Here we address the question of whether unitary Bose systems can possess a similar universality. We consider the simplest strongly interacting Bose system, where we have an impurity particle ("polaron") reson…
We investigate color superfluidity and trimer formation in resonantly interacting SU(3) Fermi gases with a finite interaction range. The finite range is crucial to avoid the Thomas collapse and treat the Efimov effect occurring in this system. Using the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) equation with medium effects, we show the effects of the atomic Fermi distribution on the Efimov trimer energy at finite temperature. We show the critical temperature of color superfluidity within the non-selfconsistent $T$-matrix approximation (TMA). In this way, we can provide a first insight into the phase di…
We use an effective-field-theory framework to analyze the Efimov effect in heteronuclear three-body systems consisting of two species of atoms with a large interspecies scattering length. In the leading-order description of this theory, various three-body observables in heteronuclear mixtures can be universally parameterized by one three-body parameter. We present the next-to-leading corrections, which include the effects of the finite interspecies effective range and the finite intraspecies scattering length, to various three-body observables. We show that only one additional three-body param…
We consider the problem of two heavy impurity particles embedded in a gas of weakly-interacting light mass bosonic particles in the condensed state. Using the Bogoliubov approach to describe the bosonic gas and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the three-body dynamics, we calculate the modification to the heavy-heavy two-body potential due to the presence of the condensate. For the case of resonant interaction between the light bosons and the impurities, we present (semi)-analytical results for the potential in the limit of a large condensate coherence length. In particular, we find a for…
We investigate dynamical three-body correlations in the Bose gas during the earliest stages of evolution after a quench to the unitary regime. The development of few-body correlations is theoretically observed by determining the two- and three-body contacts. We find that the growth of three-body correlations is gradual compared to two-body correlations. The three-body contact oscillates coherently, and we identify this as a signature of Efimov trimers. We show that the growth of three-body correlations depends non-trivially on parameters derived from both the density and Efimov physics. These …
We consider a realistic bosonic N-particle model with unitary interactions relevant for Efimov physics. Using quantum Monte Carlo methods, we find that the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation is decreased with respect to the ideal Bose gas. We also determine the full momentum distribution of the gas, including its universal asymptotic behavior, and compare this crucial observable to recent experimental data. Similar to the experiments with different atomic species, differentiated solely by a three-body length scale, our model only depends on a single parameter. We establish a w…
We demonstrate the possibility of existence of meta-stable N-body Efimov states in trapped Bose systems with large scattering length. We calculate spectra of trapped systems of N=3,4,5,6, and 7 bosons using a stochastic variational method with a restricted correlated Gaussian basis. For each system the calculations reveal a series of Efimov states where the energy and the r.m.s. radius exhibit the characteristic exponential dependence upon the state number. We also estimate the contribution of these states to the recombination rate of Bose-Einstein condensates.
Systems of three particles show a surprising feature in their bound state spectrum: a series of geometrically scaled states, known as Efimov states. These states have not yet been observed directly, but many recent experiments show indirect evidence of their existence via the so-called recombination process. The theories that predict the Efimov states also predicts either resonant enhancement of the recombination process or suppression by destructive interference, depending on the sign of the interaction between the particles. The theories predict universal features for the Efimov states, for …
We review recent work on a kinetic model for very low temperature dilute Bose gases. The brief derivation, expressions for hydrodynamics modes, and the comparison with a experiment on a BEC of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms are presented.
Quantum simulations based on near-resonance Bose gases are limited by their short lifetimes due to severe atom losses. In addition to this, the recently predicted thermodynamical instability adds another constraint on accessing the resonant Bose gases. In this article, we offer a potential solution by proposing long-lived resonant Bose gases in both two and three dimensions, where the conventional few-body losses are strongly suppressed. We show that the thermodynamical properties as well as the lifetimes of these strongly interacting systems are universal, and independent of short-range physi…
The strongly interacting Bose gas is one of the most fundamental paradigms of quantum many-body physics and the subject of many experimental and theoretical investigations. We review recent progress on strongly correlated Bose gases, starting with a description of beyond mean-field corrections. We show that the Efimov effect leads to non universal phenomena and to a metastability of the low temperature Bose gas through three-body recombination to deeply bound molecular states. We outline differences and similarities with ultracold Fermi gases, discuss recent experiments on the unitary Bose gas…
Ultra-cold atomic gases provide new chance to study the universal critical behavior of phase transition. We study theoretically the matter wave interference for ultra-cold Bose gases in the critical regime. We demonstrate that the interference in the momentum distribution can be used to extract the correlation in the Bose gas. A simple relation between the interference visibility and the correlation length is found and used to interpret the pioneering experiment about the critical behavior of dilute Bose gases [Science {\bf 315}, 1556 (2007)]. Our theory paves the way to experimentally study v…
Using effective field theories dictated by the symmetry of the system, as well as microscopic considerations, we map out the magnetic coupling-temperature phase diagrams of spin-1 Bose gases in both two- and three-dimensions. We also determine the nature of all phase boundaries, and critical properties in the case of 2nd order phase transitions at both zero and finite temperatures.
We develop an analytical approach for the description of an atomic Bose gas at unitarity. By focusing in first instance on the evaluation of the single-particle density matrix, we derive several universal properties of the unitary Bose gas, such as the chemical potential, the contact, the speed of sound, the condensate density and the effective interatomic interaction. The theory is also generalized to describe Bose gases with a finite scattering length and then reduces to the Bogoliubov theory in the weak-coupling limit.
We study the structure of a Bose-condensed gas after quenching interactions to unitarity. Using the method of cumulants, we decompose the evolving gas in terms of clusters. Within the quantum depletion we observe the emergence of two-body clusters bound purely by many-body effects, scaling continuously with the atomic density. As the unitary Bose gas forms, three-body Efimov clusters are first localized and then sequentially absorbed into the embedded atom-molecule scattering continuum of the surrounding depletion. These results motivate future experimental probes of a quenched Bose-condensate…
Ultracold atomic gases can be spined up either by confining them in rotating frame, or by introducing ``synthetic" magnetic field. In this paper, thermodynamics of rotating ideal Bose gases are investigated within truncated-summation approach which keeps to take into account the discrete nature of energy levels, rather than to approximate the summation over single-particle energy levels by an integral as does in semi-classical approximation. Our results show that Bose gases in rotating frame exhibit much stronger dependence on rotation frequency than those in ``synthetic" magnetic field. Conse…
We study the superfluid transitions in bidimensional (2D) and tridimensional (3D) disordered and interacting Bose gases. We work in the limit of long-range correlated disorder such that it can be treated in the local density approximation. We present the superfluid transition curves both in the disorder-temperature plane well as in the disorder-entropy plane in 2D and 3D Bose gases. Surprisingly, we find that a small amount of disorder is always favorable to the apparition of a superfluid. Our results offer a quantitative comparison with recent experiments in 2D disordered ultra-cold gases, fo…
We have studied thermodynamic properties of noninteracting gases in periodic lattice potential at arbitrary integer fillings and compared them with that of ideal homogeneous gases. Deriving explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities and performing exact numerical calculations we have found that the dependence of e.g. entropy and energy on the temperature in the normal phase is rather weak. In the Bose condensed phase their power dependence on the reduced temperature is nearly linear, which is in contrast to that of ideal homogeneous gases. We evaluated the discontinuity in the slope of …
We study the recombination process of three atoms scattering into an atom and diatomic molecule in heteronuclear mixtures of ultracold atomic gases with large and positive interspecies scattering length at finite temperature. We calculate the temperature dependence of the three-body recombination rates by extracting universal scaling functions that parametrize the energy dependence of the scattering matrix. We compare our results to experimental data for the 40K-87Rb mixture and make a prediction for 6Li-87Rb. We find that contributions from higher partial wave channels significantly impact th…
When two particles attract via a resonant short-range interaction, three particles always form an infinite tower of bound states characterized by a discrete scaling symmetry. It has been considered that this Efimov effect exists only in three dimensions. Here we review how the Efimov physics can be liberated from three dimensions by considering two-body and three-body interactions in mixed dimensions and four-body interaction in one dimension. In such new systems, intriguing phenomena appear, such as confinement-induced Efimov effect, Bose-Fermi crossover in Efimov spectrum, and formation of i…
By studying the zero-temperature and nonzero-temperature phase diagrams of the ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model under an external magnetic field, we find that the competition between ferromagnetism and the quadratic Zeeman energy yields two superfluid phases, which feature discontinuous first-order phase transitions between them for a strongly spinor Bose gas such as ${}^7$Li, contrary to the corresponding continuum system.
We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the thre…
We obtain a rigorous solution of universal Bose gases near resonance and offer an answer to one of the long-standing challenges of quantum gases at large scattering lengths, where the standard dilute theory breaks down. The solution was obtained by using an $ε$ expansion near four spatial dimension. In dimension $d = 4 - ε$, the chemical potential of Bose gases near resonances is shown to approach the universal value $ε^{(2/(4-ε))} ε_F \sqrt{2/3} (1 + 0.474 ε- i 1.217 ε+ ...)$, where $ε_F$ is the Fermi energy defined for a Fermi gas of density $n$, and the condensation fraction is equal to $2/…
In this work we investigate the unique properties of ultracold Bose gases in one and two dimensions. In two dimensions, we present simulations of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition using the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation formalism. We confirm the presence of the BKT phase by observing algebraic decay in the first-order correlation function, unbinding of vortex pairs, and behaviour of the superfluid fraction. In one dimension we use a transverse Gaussian ansatz and the Lagrangian approach to derive an effective equation of motion for the one dimensional Bose gas at…
We consider dynamic, i.e., frequency-dependent, correlations in non-condensed ultracold atomic Bose gases. In particular, we consider the single-particle correlation function and its power spectrum. We compute this power spectrum for a one-component Bose gas, and show how it depends on the interatomic interactions that lead to a finite single-particle relaxation time. As another example, we consider the power spectrum of spin-current fluctuations for a two-component Bose gas and show how it is determined by the spin-transport relaxation time.
We investigate the thermodynamics of one-dimensional Bose gases in the strongly correlated regime. To this end, we prepare ensembles of independent 1D Bose gases in a two-dimensional optical lattice and perform high-resolution in situ imaging of the column-integrated density distribution. Using an inverse Abel transformation we derive effective one-dimensional line-density profiles and compare them to exact theoretical models. The high resolution allows for a direct thermometry of the trapped ensembles. The knowledge about the temperature enables us to extract thermodynamic equations of state …
A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a one-dimensional ring potential supports solitary-wave solutions, which we evaluate analytically. The derived solutions are shown to be unique. The corresponding dispersion relation that generalizes the case of a single-component system shows interesting features.
We calculate the equation of state of Bose-Bose gases in one and three dimensions in the framework of an effective quantum field theory. The beyond-mean-field approximation at zero-temperature and the one-loop finite-temperature results are obtained performing functional integration on a local effective action. The ultraviolet divergent zero-point quantum fluctuations are removed by means of dimensional regularization. We derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to describe one- and three-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures and solve it analytically in the one-dimensional scenario. This equation s…
The idea is advanced that strong perturbations of an initially equilibrium Bose-condensed gas lead to the sequence of nonequilibrium states whose order is inverse to the sequence of states arising in the process of the Bose-gas relaxation from an initial nonequilibrium state. An approach is described for constructing statistical models of nonequilibrium Bose gases. The method is based on the averaging over heterogenous configurations of a nonequilibrium system. A statistical model of grain turbulence is suggested. A simple model is analyzed consisting of a mixture of two phases, one gauge symm…
We clarify some technical issues in the present generalized effective-potential Landau theory (GEPLT) that makes the GEPLT more consistent and complete. Utilizing this clarified GEPLT, we analytically study the quantum phase transitions of ultracold Bose gases in bipartite superlattices at zero termparture. The corresponding quantum phase boundaries are analytically calculated up to the third-order hopping, which are in excellent agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations.
We study the signature of scale invariance in the far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two dimensional Bose gases. We show that the density profile displays a scale invariant logarithmic singularity near the center. In addition, the density oscillates due to quantum beats with universal structures. Namely, the frequencies of the beats can be connected with one another by a universal discrete scale transformation induced by the scale invariance. The experimental applicability of these results is then discussed.
The object of study of this thesis are dipolar systems in the quantum degenerate regime. In general, dealing with many-body systems and evaluating their properties requires to deal with the Schrödinger equation. In the present study we employ different Monte Carlo methods, that are stochastic techniques that allow to find numerical solutions to it.
We show how time-dependent magnetic fields lead to spin motive forces and spin drag in a spinor Bose gas. We propose to observe these effects in a toroidal trap and analyze this particular proposal in some detail. In the linear-response regime we define a transport coefficient that is analogous to the usual drag resistivity in electron bilayer systems. Due to Bose enhancement of atom-atom scattering, this coefficient strongly increases as temperature is lowered. We also investigate the effects of heating.
Using a variational method, we derive an exact upper bound for one-magnon excitation energy in ferromagnetic spinor gases, which limits the quantum corrections to the effective mass of a magnon to be positive. We also derive an upper bound for one-magnon excitation energy in lattice systems. The results hold for both Bose and Fermi systems in $d$ dimensions as long as the interaction is local and invariant under spin rotation.
Ultracold atomic gases have recently become a driving force in few-body physics due to the observation of the Efimov effect. While initially observed in equal mass systems, one expects even richer few-body physics in the heteronuclear case. In previous experiments with ultracold mixtures of potassium and rubidium, an unexpected non-universal behavior of Efimov resonances was observed. In contrast, we measure the scattering length dependent three-body recombination coefficient in ultracold heteronuclear mixtures of $^{39}\mathrm{K}$-\87Rb and $^{41}\mathrm{K}$-\87Rb and do not observe any signa…
The stability of Bose gases near resonance has been a puzzling problem in recent years. In this Letter, we demonstrate that in addition to generating thermal pressure, thermal atoms enhance the repulsiveness of the scale-dependent interactions between condensed atoms due to renormalization effect and further stabilize the Bose gases. Consequently, we find that, as a precursor of instability, the compressibility develops an anomalous structure as a function of scattering length and is drastically reduced compared with the mean-field value. Furthermore, the density profile of a Bose gas in a har…
We study the universality of the three-body parameters for systems relevant for ultracold quantum gases with positive $s$-wave two-body scattering lengths. Our results account for finite-range effects and their universality is tested by changing the number of deeply bound diatomic states supported by our interaction model. We find that the physics controlling the values of the three-body parameters associated with the ground and excited Efimov states is constrained by a variational principle and can be strongly affected by $d$-wave interactions that prevent both trimer states from merging into…
We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.
Recent experiment has observed Feshbach resonances between alkaline and alkaline-earth atoms. These Feshbach resonances are insensitive to the nuclear spin of alkaline-earth atoms. Ultilizing this feature, we propose to take this system as a candidate to perform quantum simulation of the Kondo effect. An alkaline atom can form a molecule with an alkaline-earth atom with different nuclear spins, which plays the role of spin-exchange scattering responsible for the Kondo effect. Furthermore, we point out that the existence of three-body bound state and atom-molecule resonance due to the Efimov ef…
