In this contribution, we jointly investigate the benefits of caching and interference alignment (IA) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel under limited backhaul capacity. In particular, total average transmission rate is derived as a function of various system parameters such as backhaul link capacity, cache size, number of active transmitter-receiver pairs as well as the quantization bits for channel state information (CSI). Given the fact that base stations are equipped both with caching and IA capabilities and have knowledge of content popularity profile, we then characterize an operational regime where the caching is beneficial. Subsequently, we find the optimal number of transmitter-receiver pairs that maximizes the total average transmission rate. When the popularity profile of requested contents falls into the operational regime, it turns out that caching substantially improves the throughput as it mitigates the backhaul usage and allows IA methods to take benefit of such limited backhaul.
In this paper, we study how coded caching can be efficiently applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. This is an extension to cache-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) communications, where it is shown that with an $L$-antenna transmitter and coded caching gain $t$, a cumulative coded caching and spatial multiplexing gain of $t+L$ is achievable. We show that, interestingly, for MIMO setups with $G$-antenna receivers, a coded caching gain larger than MISO setups by a multiplicative factor of $G$ is possible, and the full coded caching and spatial multiplexing gain …
Coded caching (CC) techniques have been shown to be conveniently applicable in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. In a $K$-user network with spatial multiplexing gains of $L$ at the transmitter and $G$ at every receiver, if each user can cache a fraction $γ$ of the file library, a total number of $GKγ+ L$ data streams can be served in parallel. In this paper, we focus on improving the finite-SNR performance of MIMO-CC systems. We first consider a MIMO-CC scheme that relies only on unicasting individual data streams, and then, introduce a decomposition strategy to design a new scheme that…
In this paper, we propose a novel joint caching and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme, referred to as \emph{cache-aided massive MIMO}, for multi-cell downlink transmission to multiple cache-enabled receivers. With the proposed scheme, users who have cached (a portion of) the files that they request are offloaded and, hence, (partially) inactive during downlink transmission. The other users either benefit from the cache-enabled offloading for mitigating pilot contamination or exploit the cached but unrequested files to cancel interference during uplink channel es…
Recently, physical layer (PHY) caching has been proposed to exploit the dynamic side information induced by caches at base stations (BSs) to support Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) and achieve huge degrees of freedom (DoF) gains. Due to the limited cache storage capacity, the performance of PHY caching depends heavily on the cache content placement algorithm. In existing algorithms, the cache content placement is adaptive to the long-term popularity distribution in an offline manner. We propose an online PHY caching framework which adapts the cache content placement to microscopic spatial and t…
Caching is an effective technique to improve user perceived experience for content delivery in wireless networks. Wireless caching differs from traditional web caching in that it can exploit the broadcast nature of wireless medium and hence opportunistically change the network topologies. This paper studies a cache-aided MIMO interference network with 3 transmitters each equipped with M antennas and 3 receivers each with N antennas. With caching at both the transmitter and receiver sides, the network is changed to hybrid forms of MIMO broadcast channel, MIMO X channel, and MIMO multicast chann…
Content delivery success in wireless caching helper networks depends mainly on cache-based channel selection diversity and network interference. For given channel fading and network geometry, both channel selection diversity and network interference dynamically vary according to what and how the caching helpers cache at their finite storage space. We study probabilistic content placement (or caching placement) to desirably control cache-based channel selection diversity and network interference in a stochastic wireless caching helper network, with sophisticated considerations of wireless fadin…
This paper studies the storage-latency tradeoff in the $3\times3$ wireless interference network with caches equipped at all transmitters and receivers. The tradeoff is characterized by the so-called fractional delivery time (FDT) at given normalized transmitter and receiver cache sizes. We first propose a generic cooperative transmitter/receiver caching strategy with adjustable file splitting ratios. Based on this caching strategy, we then design the delivery phase carefully to turn the considered interference channel opportunistically into broadcast channel, multicast channel, X channel, or a…
This paper initiates the study of energy-efficiency gains provided by caching. We focus on the cache-aided Gaussian interference channel in the low-SNR regime. We propose a strategy that creates content overlaps at the transmitter caches to allow for co-operation between the transmitters. This co-operation yields a beamforming gain, which has to be traded off against a multicasting gain. We evaluate the performance of this strategy and show its approximate optimality in both the single-receiver case and the single-transmitter case.
This paper focuses on edge caching in dense heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets), in which small base stations (SBSs) with limited cache size store the popular contents, and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided macro base stations provide wireless self-backhaul when SBSs require the non-cached contents. Our aim is to address the effects of cell load and hit probability on the successful content delivery (SCD), and present the minimum required base station density for avoiding the access overload in an arbitrary small cell and backhaul overload in an arbitrary macrocell. The…
The ability of physical layer relay caching to increase the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a single cell was recently illustrated. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of multiple cells in which a caching relay is shared among multiple non-cooperative base stations (BSs). In particular, we show that a large DoF gain can be achieved by exploiting the benefits of having a shared relay that cooperates with the BSs. We first propose a cache-assisted relaying protocol that improves the cooperation opportunity between the BSs and the relay. Next, we consider the cache content placement prob…
The strong interference suffered by users can be a severe problem in cache-enabled networks (CENs) due to the content-centric user association mechanism. To tackle this issue, multi-antenna technology may be employed for interference management. In this paper, we consider a user-centric interference nulling (IN) scheme in two-tier multi-user multi-antenna CEN, with a hybrid most-popular and random caching policy at macro base stations (MBSs) and small base stations (SBSs) to provide file diversity. All the interfering SBSs within the IN range of a user are requested to suppress the interferenc…
In this paper, we propose to exploit the limited cache packets as side information to cancel incoming interference at the receiver side. We consider a stochastic network where the random locations of base stations and users are modeled using Poisson point processes. Caching schemes to reap both the local caching gain and the interference cancellation gain for the users are developed based on two factors: the density of different user subsets and the packets cached in the corresponding subsets. The packet loss rate (PLR) is analyzed, which depends on both the cached packets and the channel stat…
We propose a new caching scheme where linear combinations of the file segments are cached at the users, for the cases where the number of files is no greater than the number of users. When a user requests a certain file in the delivery phase, the other file segments in the cached linear combinations can be viewed as interferences. The proposed scheme combines rank metric codes and maximum distance separable codes to facilitate the decoding and elimination of these interferences, and also to simultaneously deliver useful contents to the intended users. The performance of the proposed scheme can…
Recent work has studied the benefits of caching in the interference channel, particularly by placing caches at the transmitters. In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel in which caches are placed at both the transmitters and the receivers. We propose a separation strategy that divides the physical and network layers. While a natural separation approach might be to abstract the physical layer into several independent bit pipes at the network layer, we argue that this is inefficient. Instead, the separation approach we propose exposes interacting bit pipes at the netwo…
We present upper and lower bounds on the per-user multiplexing gain (MG) of Wyner's circular soft-handoff model and Wyner's circular full model with cognitive transmitters and receivers with cache memories. The bounds are tight for cache memories with prelog $μ\geq 2/3D$ in the soft-handoff model and for $μ\geq D$ in the full model, where $D$ denotes the number of possibly demanded files. In these cases the per-user MG of the two models is $1+μ/D$, the same as for non-interfering point-to-point links with caches at the receivers. Large receiver cache-memories thus allow to completely mitigate …
The capacity regions of multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian Z-interference channels are established for the very strong interference and aligned strong interference cases. The sum-rate capacity of such channels is established under noisy interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian Z-interference channels.
The capacity region of a multiple-input-multiple-output interference channel (MIMO IC) where the channel matrices are square and invertible is studied. The capacity region for strong interference is established where the definition of strong interference parallels that of scalar channels. Moreover, the sum-rate capacity for Z interference, noisy interference, and mixed interference is established. These results generalize known results for the scalar Gaussian IC.
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
Interference alignment in the K-user MIMO interference channel with constant channel coefficients is considered. A novel constructive method for finding the interference alignment solution is proposed for the case where the number of transmit antennas equals the number of receive antennas (NT = NR = N), the number of transmitter-receiver pairs equals K = N + 1, and all interference alignment multiplexing gains are one. The core of the method consists of solving an eigenvalue problem that incorporates the channel matrices of all interfering links. This procedure provides insight into the feasib…
In this paper, we propose low complexity opportunistic methods for interference alignment in $K$-transmitter MIMO interference channels by exploiting multiuser diversity. We do not assume availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. Receivers are required to feed back analog values indicating the extent to which the received interference subspaces are aligned. The proposed opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) achieves sum-rate comparable to conventional OIA schemes but with a significantly reduced computational complexity.
Recent works on MIMO interference channels have shown that interference alignment can significantly increase the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of the network. However, most of these works have assumed a fully connected interference graph. In this paper, we investigate how the partial connectivity can be exploited to enhance system performance in MIMO interference networks. We propose a novel interference mitigation scheme which introduces constraints for the signal subspaces of the precoders and decorrelators to mitigate "many" interference nulling constraints at a cost of "little" freed…
We consider interference alignment (IA) over K-user Gaussian MIMO interference channel (MIMO-IC) when the SNR is not asymptotically high. We introduce a generalization of IA which enables receive diversity inside the interference-free subspace. We generalize the existence criterion of an IA solution proposed by Yetis et al. to this case, thereby establishing a multi-user diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for the interference channel. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form tight lower-bound for the ergodic mutual information achievable using IA over a Gaussian MIMO-IC with Gaussian i.i.d. ch…
In this paper, we analyze the feasibility of linear interference alignment (IA) for multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) interference broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC) with constant coefficients. We pose and prove the necessary conditions of linear IA feasibility for general MIMO-IBC. Except for the proper condition, we find another necessary condition to ensure a kind of irreducible interference to be eliminated. We then prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for a special class of MIMO-IBC, where the numbers of antennas are divisible by the number of data streams per user. Since finding an inve…
MIMO Z Channel is investigated in this paper. We focus on how to tackle the interference when different users try to send their codewords to their corresponding receivers while only one user will cause interference to the other. We assume there are two transmitters and two receivers each with two antennas. We propose a strategy to remove the interference while allowing different users transmit at the same time. Our strategy is low-complexity while the performance is good. Mathematical analysis is provided and simulations are given based on our system.
Dense wireless networks are a promising solution to meet the huge capacity demand in 5G wireless systems. However, there are two implementation issues, namely the interference and backhaul issues. To resolve these issues, we propose a novel network architecture called the backhaul-limited cached dense wireless network (C-DWN), where a physical layer (PHY) caching scheme is employed at the base stations (BSs) but only a fraction of the BSs have wired payload backhauls. The PHY caching can replace the role of wired backhauls to achieve both the cache-induced MIMO cooperation gain and cache-assis…
Determining the feasibility conditions for vector space interference alignment in the K-user MIMO interference channel with constant channel coefficients has attracted much recent attention yet remains unsolved. The main result of this paper is restricted to the symmetric square case where all transmitters and receivers have N antennas, and each user desires d transmit dimensions. We prove that alignment is possible if and only if the number of antennas satisfies N>= d(K+1)/2. We also show a necessary condition for feasibility of alignment with arbitrary system parameters. An algebraic geometr…
This paper studies two-user MIMO interference channel with isotropic fading. We assume that users are equipped with arbitrary number of antennas and the channel state information (CSI) is available at receivers only. An outer bound is obtained for the degree of freedom region, which suggests the loss of degrees of freedom due to the lack of CSI at transmitters under many circumstances.
In this paper, we analyze a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel where nodes are randomly distributed on a plane as a spatial Poisson cluster point process. Each cluster uses interference alignment (IA) to suppress intra-cluster interference but unlike most work on IA, we do not neglect inter-cluster interference. We also connect the accuracy of channel state information to the distance between the nodes, i.e. the quality of CSI degrades with increasing distance. Accounting for the training and feedback overhead, we derive the transmission capacity of this MIMO IA ad hoc …
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the 3-user multiple input multiple output interference channel (3-user MIMO IC) are investigated where there is delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). We generalize the ideas of Maleki et al. about {\it Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA)} to be applied to the MIMO IC, where transmitters and receivers are equipped with $(M,N)$ antennas, respectively. We propose a two-phase transmission scheme where the number of slots per phase and number of transmitted symbols are optimized by solving a maximization problem. Finally, we review the…
In this paper, we propose an iterative interference alignment (IA) algorithm for MIMO cellular networks with partial connectivity, which is induced by heterogeneous path losses and spatial correlation. Such systems impose several key technical challenges in the IA algorithm design, namely the overlapping between the direct and interfering links due to the MIMO cellular topology as well as how to exploit the partial connectivity. We shall address these challenges and propose a three stage IA algorithm. As illustration, we analyze the achievable degree of freedom (DoF) of the proposed algorithm …
A multi-antenna broadcast channel scenario is considered where a base station delivers contents to cache-enabled user terminals. A joint design of coded caching (CC) and multigroup multicast beamforming is proposed to benefit from spatial multiplexing gain, improved interference management and the global CC gain, simultaneously. The developed general content delivery strategies utilize the multiantenna multicasting opportunities provided by the CC technique while optimally balancing the detrimental impact of both noise and inter-stream interference from coded messages transmitted in parallel. …
This paper considers the so-called MIMO interference channel. This situation has relevance in applications such as multi-cell coordination in cellular networks as well as spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks among others. We address the design of precoding (i.e. beamforming) vectors at each sender with the aim of striking a compromise between beamforming gain at the intended receiver (Egoism) and the mitigation of interference created towards other receivers (Altruism). Combining egoistic and altruistic beamforming has been shown previously to be instrumental to optimizing the rates in…
Using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers has recently been shown to be sum capacity achieving for the two-user single-input single-output (SISO) Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference levels are below certain thresholds. In this paper, such a low interference regime is characterized for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channels. Conditions are provided on the direct and cross channel gain matrices under which using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers is sum ca…
It is already well-known that interference alignment (IA) achieves the sum capacity of the K-user interference channel at the high interference regime. On the other hand, it is intuitively clear that when the interference levels are very low, a sum-rate scaling of K (as opposed to K/2 for IA) should be accessed at high signal-to-noise ratio values by simple ("myopic") single-link multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques such as waterfilling. Recent results have indicated that in certain low-to-moderate interference cases, treating interference as noise may in fact be preferable. In thi…
This paper investigates an error covariance matrix splitting technique for multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) interference downlink channel. Most of the related work has thus far considered the traditional error covariance matrix which has not been well-shaped for maximizing the system capacity. Thus, we split and propose a new iterative error covariance matrix to mitigate the system error and maximize the system capacity in this paper. Numerical results illustrate that our proposed method is strictly better than the traditional method.
Over the past decade, the bulk of wireless traffic has shifted from speech to content. This shift creates the opportunity to cache part of the content in memories closer to the end users, for example in base stations. Most of the prior literature focuses on the reduction of load in the backhaul and core networks due to caching, i.e., on the benefits caching offers for the wireline communication link between the origin server and the caches. In this paper, we are instead interested in the benefits caching can offer for the wireless communication link between the caches and the end users. To qua…
This paper compares two important downlink multicell interference mitigation techniques, namely, large-scale (LS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and network MIMO. We consider a cooperative wireless cellular system operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode, wherein each cooperating cluster includes $B$ base-stations (BSs), each equipped with multiple antennas and scheduling $K$ single-antenna users. In an LS-MIMO system, each BS employs $BM$ antennas not only to serve its scheduled users, but also to null out interference caused to the other users within the cooperating cluster using …
We provide innerbound and outerbound for the total number of degrees of freedom of the $K$ user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver if the channel coefficients are time-varying and drawn from a continuous distribution. The bounds are tight when the ratio $\frac{\max(M,N)}{\min(M,N)}=R$ is equal to an integer. For this case, we show that the total number of degrees of freedom is equal to $\min(M,N)K$ if $K \leq R$ and $\min(M,N)\frac{R}{R+1}K$ if $K > R$. Achievability is based on interferenc…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Interference Broadcast Channel (IBC) with 2 cells and 2 users per cell are investigated when only delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Retrospective Interference Alignment has shown the benefits in terms of DoF of exploiting delayed CSIT for interference, broadcast and also for the IBC. However, previous works studying the IBC with delayed CSIT do not exploit the fact that the users of each cell are served by a common transmitter. This work presents a four-phase precoding…
Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeof…
The ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) in interference-limited multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink cellular systems is characterized based on stochastic geometry. A single user is served by using singular value decomposition precoding and combining. By approximating the expectations of the channel eigenvalues, we derive upper and lower bounds on the ergodic SE. The obtained upper bound is the best possible system-level performance of any MIMO strategy in non-cooperative cellular networks. We validate our analytical results through simulation. We also conjecture that there exists the o…
In this research paper approximate mean of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) is computed and maximized for throughput enhancement of MIMO interference networks. Each transmitter and receiver has respectively M and N antennas and network operates in a time division duplex mode. Each transceiver adjusts its filter to maximize the expected value of SINR. The proposed New Approach for Throughput Enhancement under imperfect CSI utilizes the reciprocity of wireless networks to maximize the estimated mean. The sum rate performance of the pr…
In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the asymmetric multi-input-multi-output interference broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC). By introducing a notion of connection pattern chain, we generalize the genie chain proposed in [11] to derive and prove the necessary condition of IA feasibility for asymmetric MIMO-IBC, which is denoted as irreducible condition. It is necessary for both linear interference alignment (IA) and asymptotic IA feasibility in MIMO-IBC with arbitrary configurations. In a special class of asymmetric two-cell MIMOIBC, the irreducible condition is proved to be the s…
In this paper, a design criterion for space-time block codes (STBC) is proposed for two-user MIMO interference channels when a group zero-forcing (ZF) algorithm is applied at each receiver to eliminate the inter-user interference. Based on the design criterion, a design of STBC for two-user interference channels is proposed that can achieve full diversity for each user with the group ZF receiver. The code rate approaches one when the time delay in the encoding (or code block size) gets large. Performance results demonstrate that the full diversity can be guaranteed by our proposed STBC with th…
We consider the $K$-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver. It is assumed that channel coefficients are constant and are available at all transmitters and at all receivers. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) for this channel. Using a new interference alignment technique which has been recently introduced in \cite{abolfazl-final}, we show that $\frac{MN}{M+N} K$ degrees of freedom can be achieved for almost all channel realizations. Also, a new …
We consider the MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) Gaussian interference channel with i.i.d. fading across antennas and channel uses and with the delayed local channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). For the two-user case, achievability results for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel are provided. We also prove the tightness of our achievable DoF region for some antenna configurations. Interestingly, there are some cases in which the DoF region with delayed local CSIT is identical to the DoF region with perfect CSIT and that is strictly larger than the DoF regi…
In traditional cache-enabled small-cell networks (SCNs), a user can suffer strong interference due to contentcentric base station association. This may degenerate the advantage of collaborative content caching among multiple small base stations (SBSs), including probabilistic caching and coded caching. In this work, we tackle this issue by deploying multiple antennas at each SBS for interference management. Two types of beamforming are considered. One is matched-filter (MF) to strengthen the effective channel gain of the desired signal, and the other is zero-forcing (ZF) to cancel interference…
This paper studies caching in (K+L-1) x K partially connected wireless linear networks, where each of the K receivers locally communicates with L out of the K+L-1 transmitters, and caches are at all nodes. The goal is to design caching and delivery schemes to reduce the transmission latency, by using normalized delivery time (NDT) as the performance metric. For small transmitter cache size (any L transmitters can collectively store the database just once), we propose a cyclic caching strategy so that each of every L consecutive transmitters caches a distinct part of each file; the delivery str…
The two-user multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) interference and cognitive radio channels are studied under the assumption of no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) from the degrees of freedom (DoF) region perspective. With $M_i$ and $N_i$ denoting the number of antennas at transmitter $i$ and receiver $i$ respectively, the DoF regions of the MIMO interference channel were recently characterized by Huang et al., Zhu and Guo, and by the authors of this paper for all values of numbers of antennas except when $\min(M_1,N_1) > N_2 > M_2$ (or $\min(M_2,N_2) > N_1 > M_1$). This latter …
This paper proposes a linear interference alignment (IA) scheme which can be used for uplink channels in a general multicell multiuser MIMO cellular network. The proposed scheme aims to align interference caused by signals from a set of transmitters into a subspace which is established by the signals from only a subset of those transmitters, thereby effectively reducing the number of interfering transmitters. The total degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by the proposed scheme is given in closed-form expression, and a numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal Do…
Multi-antenna precoding effectively mitigates the interference in wireless networks. However, the precoding efficiency can be significantly degraded by the overhead due to the required feedback of channel state information (CSI). This paper addresses such an issue by proposing a systematic method of designing precoders for the two-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels based on finite-rate CSI feedback from receivers to their interferers, called cooperative feedback. Specifically, each precoder is decomposed into inner and outer precoders for nulling interference and …
Spectrum sharing between radars and cellular systems is an emerging area of research. In this paper, we model channel between a seaborne MIMO radar and MIMO cellular system. We model a 2D channel to capture the azimuth aspect of the spectrum sharing scenario. Our channel modeling methodology allows MIMO radar to place accurate nulls in the azimuth location of base stations (BS), thus, protecting them from harmful radar interference. We use a projection based approach, where radar waveform is projected onto null space of channel, for mitigating radar interference to BSs. This is also known as a…
