We detect variability of the Fe Ka emission line in the spectrum of X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67, correlated with changes in its luminosity and in the shape of its pulse profile. Analysis of archival Chandra and RXTE observations revealed the presence of an intrinsically narrow Fe Ka emission line in the spectrum obtained during the source's current high luminosity period. However, the line was not present during an XMM-Newton observation seven years earlier, when the source was ~three times fainter. The line is resolved by the high energy grating of Chandra at the 98% confidence level, and its small intrinsic width, sigma=36.4 (-/+ 11.3,15.3)eV, suggests reflection off an accretion disk at the radius R~7.5(-/+ 3.8,8.2)x10^8cm assuming a Keplerian disk, viewed at an inclination angle of 20deg. This value is consistent with the radius of the magnetosphere of the pulsar, suggesting that the line originates near the inner edge of a disk that is truncated by the magnetic field of the neutron star. Timing analysis of the XMM-Newton and RXTE data revealed a major change in the pulse profile of the source from a distinct double peaked shape during the high luminosity state when the line was present, to a much more complex multi-peak structure during the low luminosity state. We argue that the appearance of the line and the change in the shape of the pulse profile are correlated and are the result of a major change in the emission diagram of the accretion column, from a pencil-beam pattern at low luminosity, to a fan-beam pattern at high luminosity.
We investigated the pulsar radio luminosity ($L$), emission efficiency (ratio of radio luminosity to its spin-down power $\dot{E}$), and death line in the diagram of magnetic field (B) versus spin period (P), and found that the dependence of pulsar radio luminosity on its spin-down power ($L-\dot{E}$) is very weak, shown as $L\sim\dot{E}^{0.06}$, which deduces an equivalent inverse correlation between emission efficiency and spin-down power as $ξ\sim \dot{E}^{-0.94}$. Furthermore, we examined the distributions of radio luminosity of millisecond and normal pulsars, and found that, for the simil…
We investigate the electrodynamic structure of a pulsar outer-magnetospheric particle accelerator and the resultant gamma-ray emission. By considering the condition for the accelerator to be self-sustained, we derive how the trans-magnetic-field thickness of the accelerator evolves with the pulsar age. It is found that the thickness is small but increases steadily if the neutron-star envelope is contaminated by sufficient light elements. For such a light element envelope, the gamma-ray luminosity of the accelerator is kept approximately constant as a function of age in the initial ten thousand…
This paper presents the discovery and timing parameters for five millisecond pulsars (MSPs), four in binary systems with probable white dwarf companions and one isolated, found in ongoing processing of the High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey (HTRU). We also present high quality polarimetric data on four of them. These further discoveries confirm the high potential of our survey in finding pulsars with very short spin periods. At least two of these five MSPs are excellent candidates to be included in the Pulsar Timing Array projects. Thanks to the wealth of MSP discoveries in the HTRU s…
The mechanism that can be responsible for the bimodal luminosity distribution of super-Eddington X-ray pulsars in binary systems is pointed out. The transition from the high to low state of these objects is explained by accretion flow spherization due to the radiation pressure at certain (high) accretion rates. The transition between the states can be associated with a gradual change in the accretion rate. The complex behavior of the recently discovered ultraluminous X-ray pulsars M 82 X-2, NGC 5907 ULX-1, and NGC 7793 P13 is explained by the proposed mechanism. The proposed model also natural…
We elaborate on a recently proposed model for subsonic quasi-spherical accretion onto slowly rotating pulsars, in which accretion is mediated through a hot quasi-static shell above the neutron star magnetosphere. We show that under the same external conditions, two regimes of subsonic accretion are possible, depending on if plasma cooling in the transition zone is dominated by Compton or radiative processes. We suggest that a transition from the higher luminosity Compton cooling regime to the lower luminosity radiative cooling regime can be responsible for the onset of the `off'-states repeate…
The detection of 1.37$\, $s pulsations from NuSTAR J095551+6940.8 implies the existence of an accreting pulsar, which challenges the conventional understanding of ultraluminous X-ray source. This kind of sources are proposed to be massive pulsars in this paper. Considering the general relativistic effect, stronger gravity of massive pulsars could lead to a larger maximum luminosity, scaled as the Eddington luminosity. The pseudo-Newtonian potential is employed to simulate the gravitational field in general relativity, and the Eddington luminosity is calculated for self-bound stars (quark star …
Previous works have suggested a correlation between the X-ray luminosity Lx and the rotational luminosity Lrot of the radio pulsars. However, none of the obtained regression lines are statistically acceptable due to large scatters. We construct a statistical model which has an intrinsic Lx-Lrot relation and reproduces the observed Lx distribution about it by using a Monte Carlo simulator, which takes into account the effects obscuring the intrinsic relation,i.e., the anisotropy of radiation, additional heating, uncertainty in distance and detection limit of the instruments. From the ATNF pulsar…
The recently discovered radio pulsar GLEAM-X J162759.5-523504.3 with an extremely long spin period was reported to have a radio luminosity that exceeds by orders of magnitude the spin-down power of the pulsar. In this Letter, we rigorously calculate the radio luminosity of the source taking into account the dependence of the opening angle of the pulsar-emission cone first on the spin period alone and then on both the spin parameters and the observing frequency. We also revise the value of the spin-down power reported previously. Our analysis is based on the description of the spectral data in …
With the large sample of young gamma-ray pulsars discovered by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), population synthesis has become a powerful tool for comparing their collective properties with model predictions. We synthesised a pulsar population based on a radio emission model and four gamma-ray gap models (Polar Cap, Slot Gap, Outer Gap, and One Pole Caustic) normalizing to the number of detected radio pulsars in select group of surveys. The luminosity and the wide beams from the outer gaps can easily account for the number of Fermi detections in 2 years of observations. The wide slot-gap…
The spectra of several X-ray binary pulsars display a clear soft excess, which in most cases can be described with a blackbody model, above the main power-law component. While in the high-luminosity sources it is usually characterized by low temperature (kT < 0.5 keV) and large emission radius (R > 100 km), in the two persistent and low-luminosity pulsars 4U 0352+309 and RX J0146.9+6121 this component has a high temperature (kT > 1 keV) and a smaller radius (R < 0.5 km), consistent with the estimated size of the neutron-star polar cap. Here we report on the timing and spectral analysis of RX J…
We study the relation between luminosity and spin-period change in X-ray binary pulsars using long-term light curve obtained by the MAXI/GSC all-sky survey and pulse period data from the Fermi/GBM pulsar project. X-ray binaries, consisting of a highly magnetized neutron star and a stellar companion, originate X-ray emission according to the energy of the accretion matter onto the neutron star. The accretion matter also transfers the angular momentum at the Alfven radius, and then spin up the neutron star. Therefore, the X-ray luminosity and the spin-up rate are supposed to be well correlated. …
To observationally study spin-period changes of accreting pulsars caused by the accretion torque, the present work analyzes X-ray light curves of 12 Be binary pulsars obtained by the MAXI/GSC all-sky survey and their pulse periods measured by the Fermi/GBM pulsar project, both covering more than 6 years from 2009 August to 2016 March. The 12 objects were selected because they are accompanied by clear optical identification, and accurate measurements of surface magnetic fields. The luminosity $L$ and the spin-frequency derivatives $\dotν$, measured during large outbursts with $L\gtrsim 1\times …
We report results of the first broadband observation of the transient X-ray pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed in the quiescent state. Observations were conducted quasi-simultaneously with the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope on board SRG and NuSTAR right before the beginning of a Type I outburst. GRO J1008-57 was detected in the state with the lowest observed luminosity around several $\times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and consequently accreting from the cold disk. Timing analysis allowed to significantly detect pulsations during this state for the first time. The observed pulsed fraction of about 20…
We use a Bayesian approach to derive the distance probability distribution for one object from its parallax with measurement uncertainty for two spatial distribution priors, viz. a homogeneous spherical distribution and a galactocentric distribution - applicable for radio pulsars - observed from Earth. We investigate the dependence on measurement uncertainty, and show that a parallax measurement can underestimate or overestimate the actual distance, depending on the spatial distribution prior. We derive the probability distributions for distance and luminosity combined, and for each separately…
We report the evidence for the anti-correlation between pulsed fraction (PF) and luminosity of the X-ray pulsar SXP 1323, found for the first time in a luminosity range $10^{35}$--$10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ from observations spanning 15 years. The phenomenon of a decrease in X-ray PF when the source flux increases has been observed in our pipeline analysis of other X-ray pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). It is expected that the luminosity under a certain value decreases as the PF decreases due to the propeller effect. Above the propeller region, an anti-correlation between the PF and fl…

Electromagnetic field together with zero-mass charges moving in this field form a well-behaved semi-dissipative dynamical system -- Electrodynamics of Massless Charges (EMC). We give equations of EMC, argue that EMC is an adequate theory for calculating pulsar magnetospheres, give an illustrative numerical calculation (showing that bolometric luminosity of an aligned rotator is approximately equal to half the spin-down power). EMC looks like a portion of the full pulsar theory that will resolve the already calculated bolometric luminosity into light curves and spectra.
We present a comprehensive timing and spectral studies of Be/X-ray binary pulsar EXO 2030+375 using extensive Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations from 1995 till 2011, covering numerous Type I and 2006 Type II outbursts. Pulse profiles of the pulsar were found to be strongly luminosity dependent. At low luminosity, the pulse profile consisted of a main peak and a minor peak that evolved into a broad structure at high luminosity with a significant phase shift. A narrow and sharp absorption dip, also dependent on energy and luminosity, was detected in the pulse profile. Comparison of pulse p…
We perform 2.5D axisymmetric simulations of the pulsar magnetosphere (aligned dipole rotator) using the charge conservative, relativistic, electromagnetic particle in cell code PICsar. Particle in cell codes are a powerful tool to use for studying the pulsar magnetosphere, because they can handle the force-free and vacuum limits and provide a self-consistent treatment of magnetic reconnection. In the limit of dense plasma throughout the magnetosphere, our solutions are everywhere in the force-free regime except for dissipative regions at the polar caps, in the current layers, and at the Y-poin…
Context: Be/X-ray binaries show outbursts with peak luminosities up to a few times $10^{37}\,$erg/s, during which they can be observed and studied in detail. Most (if not all) Be/X-ray binaries harbour accreting pulsars, whose X-ray spectra in many cases contain cyclotron resonant scattering features related to the magnetic field of the sources. Spectral variations as a function of luminosity and of the rotational phase of the neutron star are observed in many accreting pulsars. Aims: We explore X-ray spectral and timing properties of the Be/X-ray binary GX 304-1 during an outburst episode. Sp…
Synchrotron radiation is widely considered as the origin of the pulsed non-thermal emissions from rotation-powered pulsars in optical and X-ray bands. In this paper, we study the synchrotron radiation emitted by the created electron and positron pairs in the pulsar magnetosphere to constrain on the energy conversion efficiency from the Poynting flux to the particle energy flux. We model two pair creation processes, two-photon collision which efficiently works in young $γ$-ray pulsars ($\lesssim10^6$ yr), and magnetic pair creation which is the dominant process to supply pairs in old pulsars ($…
We report the discovery of the first new pulsar with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), PSR J0036$-$1033, a long-period (0.9 s) nonrecycled pulsar with a dispersion measure (DM) of 23.1 ${\rm pc\,cm^{-3}}$. It was found after processing only a small fraction ($\sim$1%) of data from an ongoing all-sky pulsar survey. Follow-up observations have been made with the MWA, the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), and the Parkes 64 m telescopes, spanning a frequency range from $\sim$150 MHz to 4 GHz. The pulsar is faint, with an estimated flux density ($S$) of $\sim$1 mJy at 400 MHz and…
XSS J12270-4859 (henceforth J12270) is the first low-mass X-ray binary to exhibit a transition, taking place at the end of 2012, from an X-ray active state to a radio pulsar state. The X-ray emission based on archival XMM-Newton observations is highly variable, showing rapid variations (10 s) from a high X-ray luminosity mode to a low mode and back. A flaring mode has also been observed. X-ray pulsations have been detected during the high mode only. In this work we present two possible interpretations for the rapid swings between the high and low modes. In the first scenario, this phenomenon c…
We analyzed 186 binary pulsars (BPSRs) in the magnetic field versus spin period (B-P) diagram, where their relations to the millisecond pulsars (MSPs) can be clearly shown. Generally, both BPSRs and MSPs are believed to be recycled and spun-up in binary accreting phases, and evolved below the spin-up line setting by the Eddington accretion rate ($\dot{M}{\bf \simeq}10^{18} g/s$). It is noticed that most BPSRs are distributed around the spin-up line with mass accretion rate $\dot{M}=10^{16} g/s$ and almost all MSP samples lie above the spin-up line with $\dot{M}\sim10^{15} g/s$. Thus, we calcul…
Studies of the Galactic population of radio pulsars have shown that their luminosity distribution appears to be log-normal in form. We investigate some of the consequences that occur when one applies this functional form to populations of pulsars in globular clusters. We use Bayesian methods to explore constraints on the mean and standard deviation of the luminosity function, as well as the total number of pulsars, given an observed sample of pulsars down to some limiting flux density, accounting for measurements of flux densities of individual pulsars as well as diffuse emission from the dire…
Using observations made with the XMM-Newton Observatory, we report the probable X-ray detection of the high-magnetic-field radio pulsar PSR J1734-3333. This pulsar has an inferred surface dipole magnetic field of B = 5.2e13 G, just below that of one anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). We find that the pulsar has an absorbed 0.5-2.0 keV flux of (5-15)e-15 erg/s/cm^2 and that its X-ray luminosity L_X is well below its spin down luminosity E_dot, with L_X < 0.1E_dot. No pulsations were detected in these data although our derived upper limit is unconstraining. Like most of the other high-B pulsars, PSR …
In continuation of our earlier work on the long-term evolution of the so-called high--B radio pulsars (HBRPs) with measured braking indices, we have investigated the long-term evolution of the remaining five HBRPs for which braking indices have not been measured yet. This completes our source-by-source analyses of HBRPs in the fallback disc model that was also applied earlier to anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), and dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). Our results show that the X-ray luminosities and the rotational properties of these rather different neutron star pop…
The luminosity distribution of Galactic radio pulsars is believed to be log-normal in form. Applying this functional form to populations of pulsars in globular clusters, we employ Bayesian methods to explore constraints on the mean and standard deviation of the function, as well as the total number of pulsars in the cluster. Our analysis is based on an observed number of pulsars down to some limiting flux density, measurements of flux densities of individual pulsars, as well as diffuse emission from the direction of the cluster. We apply our analysis to Terzan 5 and demonstrate, under reasonab…
Gamma-ray loud X-ray binaries are binary systems that show non-thermal broadband emission from radio to gamma rays. If the system comprises a massive star and a young non-accreting pulsar, their winds will collide producing broadband non-thermal emission, most likely originated in the shocked pulsar wind. Thermal X-ray emission is expected from the shocked stellar wind, but until now it has neither been detected nor studied in the context of gamma-ray binaries. We present a semi-analytic model of the thermal X-ray emission from the shocked stellar wind in pulsar gamma-ray binaries, and find th…
We report results on the timing analysis of the 2020 giant outburst of 1A 0535+262, using broadband data from Insight-HXMT. The analysis of the pulse profile evolution from the sub-critical luminosity to super-critical luminosity regime is presented for the first time. We found that the observed pulse profile exhibits a complex dependence on both energy and luminosity.A dip structure at the energy of the cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) is found for the first time in the pulse fraction-energy relation of 1A 0535+262, when the outburst evolves in a luminosity range from 4.8 $\time…
The location of radio pulsars in the period-period derivative (P-Pdot) plane has been a key diagnostic tool since the early days of pulsar astronomy. Of particular importance is how pulsars evolve through the P-Pdot diagram with time. Here we show that the decay of the inclination angle (alpha-dot) between the magnetic and rotation axes plays a critical role. In particular, alpha-dot strongly impacts on the braking torque, an effect which has been largely ignored in previous work. We carry out simulations which include a negative alpha-dot term, and show that it is possible to reproduce the ob…
Pulsars traveling at supersonic speeds are often accompanied by cometary bow shocks seen in Halpha. We report on the first detection of a pulsar bow shock in the far-ultraviolet (FUV). We detected it in FUV images of the nearest millisecond pulsar J0437-4715 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The images reveal a bow-like structure positionally coincident with part of the previously detected Halpha bow shock, with an apex at 10" ahead of the moving pulsar. Its FUV luminosity, L(1250-2000 A) ~ 5x10^28 erg/s, exceeds the Halpha luminosity from the same area by a factor of 10. The FUV emiss…
We argue that the bright flare of the binary pulsar \object{PSR B1259$-$63/LS2883} detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), is due to the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the unshocked electron-positron pulsar wind with a Lorentz factor $Γ_0 \approx 10^4$. The combination of two effects both linked to the circumstellar disk (CD), is a key element in the proposed model. The first effect is related to the impact of the surrounding medium on the termination of the pulsar wind. Inside the disk, the "early" termination of the wind results in suppression of its gamma-ray luminosity.…
(abridged) Gamma-ray pulsars constitute a class of high and very high-energy emitters for which the known population is steadily increasing thanks to the Fermi/Large Area Telescope. In this paper, their gamma-ray luminosity and spectral features are explained in the framework of synchrotron radiation from particles located in the stripe of the pulsar wind. Apart from radiative losses, particles are also subject to a constant re-acceleration and reheating for instance by a magnetic reconnection induced electric field. The high-energy luminosity scales as $L_γ\approx 2\times10^{26} \textrm{W} \,…
Accretion-powered X-ray pulsars exhibit significant variability of the Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) centroid energy on pulse-to-pulse timescales, and also on much longer timescales. Two types of spectral variability are observed. For sources in group 1, the CRSF energy is negatively correlated with the variable source luminosity, and for sources in group 2, the opposite behavior is observed. The physical basis for this bimodal behavior is currently not understood. We explore the hypothesis that the accretion dynamics in the group 1 sources is dominated by radiation pressure ne…
We review the results of a timing analysis of the observations for ten bright X-ray pulsars (with fluxes >100 mCrab in the 20-100 keV energy band) that fell within the INTEGRAL field of view from 2003 to 2007. The dependence of the pulse profile on the energy and intrinsic source luminosity has been investigated; particular attention has been paid to searching for changes in the pulse profile near the cyclotron frequency. The dependence of the pulsed fraction for X-ray pulsars on their luminosity and energy band has been studied in detail for the first time.
3FGL J1544.6-1125 is a candidate transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP). Similar to the well-established tMSPs - PSR J1023+0038, IGR J18245-2452, and XSS J12270-4859 -- 3FGL J1544.6-1125 shows $γ$-ray emission and discrete X-ray "low" and "high" modes during its low-luminosity accretion-disk state. Coordinated radio/X-ray observations of PSR J1023+0038 in its current low-luminosity accretion-disk state showed rapidly variable radio continuum emission-possibly originating from a compact, self-absorbed jet, the "propellering" of accretion material, and/or pulsar moding. 3FGL J1544.6-1125 is curr…
We present a statistical analysis of the X-ray luminosity of rotation powered pulsars and their surrounding nebulae using the sample of Kargaltsev & Pavlov (2008) and we complement this with an analysis of the gamma-ray-emission of Fermi detected pulsars. We report a strong trend in the efficiency with which spin-down power is converted to X-ray and gamma-ray emission with characteristic age: young pulsars and their surrounding nebulae are efficient X-ray emitters, whereas in contrast old pulsars are efficient gamma-ray emitters. We divided the X-ray sample in a young (Tau < 1.7x10^4 yr) and o…
The classical limit on the accretion luminosity of a neutron star is given by the Eddington luminosity. The advanced models of accretion onto magnetized neutron stars account for the appearance of magnetically confined accretion columns and allow the accretion luminosity to be higher than the Eddington value by a factor of tens. However, the recent discovery of pulsations from ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 5907 demonstrates that the accretion luminosity can exceed the Eddington value up to by a factor of 500. We propose a model explaining observational properties of ULX-1 in NGC 5907…
PSR J1023+0038 (J1023) is a binary system hosting a neutron star and a low mass companion. J1023 is the best studied transitional pulsar, alternating a faint eclipsing millisecond radio pulsar state to a brighter X-ray active state. At variance with other Low Mass X-ray binaries, this active state reaches luminosities of only ~$10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$, showing strong, fast variability. In the active state, J1023 displays: i) a high state ($L_X\sim7\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$, 0.3-80 keV) occurring ~80% of the time and during which X-ray pulsations at the neutron star spin period are detected (pu…
Adopting our new method for matching general relativistic, ideal magnetohydrodynamics to its force-free limit, we perform the first systematic simulations of force-free pulsar magnetospheres in general relativity. We endow the neutron star with a general relativistic dipole magnetic field, model the interior with ideal magnetohydrodynamics, and adopt force-free electrodynamics in the exterior. Comparing the spin-down luminosity to its corresponding Minkowski value, we find that general relativistic effects give rise to a modest enhancement: the maximum enhancement for $n=1$ polytropes is $\sim…
A Chandra X-ray study of millisecond pulsars in the globular cluster Omega Centauri: a correlation between spider pulsar companion mass and X-ray luminosity
We present coordinated Chandra X-ray Observatory and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the transitional millisecond pulsar PSR J1023+0038 in its low-luminosity accreting state. The unprecedented five hours of strictly simultaneous X-ray and radio continuum coverage for the first time unambiguously show a highly reproducible, anti-correlated variability pattern. The characteristic switches from the X-ray high mode into a low mode are always accompanied by a radio brightening with duration that closely matches the X-ray low mode interval. This behavior cannot be explained by a cano…
Recently, gamma-ray emission at TeV energies has been detected from the starburst galaxies NGC253 (Acero et al., 2009) and M82 (Acciari et al., 2009. It has been claimed that pion production due to cosmic rays accelerated in supernova remnants interacting with the interstellar gas is responsible for the observed gamma rays. Here, we show that the gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae left behind by the supernovae contribute to the TeV luminosity in a major way. A single pulsar wind nebula produces about ten times the total luminosity of the Sun at energies above 1 TeV during a lifetime of 10^5 years. …
The $P\dot P$ diagram is a cornerstone of pulsar research. It is used in multiple ways for classifying the population, understanding evolutionary tracks, identifying issues in our theoretical reach, and more. However, we have been looking at the same plot for more than five decades. A fresh appraisal may be healthy. Is the $P\dot P$-diagram the most useful or complete way to visualize the pulsars we know? Here we pose a fresh look at the information we have on the pulsar population. First, we use principal components analysis over magnitudes depending on the intrinsic pulsar's timing propertie…
We present the results of processing an additional 44% of the High Time Resolution Universe South Low Latitude (HTRU-S LowLat) pulsar survey, the most sensitive blind pulsar survey of the southern Galactic plane to date. Our partially-coherent segmented acceleration search pipeline is designed to enable the discovery of pulsars in short, highly-accelerated orbits, while our 72-min integration lengths will allow us to discover pulsars at the lower end of the pulsar luminosity distribution. We report the discovery of 40 pulsars, including three millisecond pulsar-white dwarf binary systems (PSRs…
Pulsed emission from almost one hundred millisecond pulsars (MSPs) has been detected in $γ$-rays by the Fermi Large-Area Telescope. The global properties of this population remain relatively unconstrained despite many attempts to model their spatial and luminosity distributions. We perform here a self-consistent Bayesian analysis of both the spatial distribution and luminosity function simultaneously. Distance uncertainties, arising from errors in the parallax measurement or Galactic electron-density model, are marginalized over. We provide a public Python package for calculating distance unce…
It is believed that millisecond pulsars attain their fast spins by accreting matter and angular momentum from companion stars. Theoretical modelling of the accretion process suggests a spin-up line in the period-period derivative ($P$-$\dot{P}$) diagram of millisecond pulsars, which plays an important role in population studies of radio millisecond pulsars and accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries. Here we present observational evidence for such a spin-up line using a sample of 143 radio pulsars with $P$ < 30 ms. We also find that PSRs~J1823$-$3021A and J1824$-$2452A, located near the clas…
Pulsars have been identified as good candidates for the acceleration of cosmic rays, up to ultra-high energies. However, a precise description of the acceleration processes at play is still to be established. Using 2D particle-in-cell simulations, we study proton acceleration in axisymmetric pulsar magnetospheres. Protons and electrons are extracted from the neutron star surface by the strong electric field induced by the rotation of the star, and electrons and positrons are produced in the magnetosphere through pair production process. As pair production has a crucial impact on electromagneti…
We study the synchrotron radiation as the observed non-thermal X-ray emission from old pulsars ($\gtrsim1-10$Myr) to investigate the particle acceleration in their magnetospheres. We assume that the power-law component of the observed X-ray spectra is caused by the synchrotron radiation from electrons and positrons in the magnetosphere. We consider two pair production mechanisms of X-ray emitting particles, the magnetic and the photon-photon pair productions. High-energy photons, which ignite the pair production, are emitted via the curvature radiation of the accelerated particles. We use the …
Pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources (PULXs) are accreting pulsars with apparent X-ray luminosity exceeding $10^{39}\, \rm erg\ s^{-1}$. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations to investigate whether high collimation effect (or strong beaming effect) is dominant in the presence of accretion outflows, for the fan beam emission of the accretion column of the neutron stars in PULXs. We show that the three nearby PULXs (RX J0209.6$-$7427, Swift J0243.6+6124 and SMC X-3), namely the three musketeers here, have their main pulsed emission not strongly collimated even if strong outflows exist. This conclu…
We have investigated the rotational and the X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{x}}$) observations of 4U 1626--67 accumulated during the last four decades. It has been recorded that the source underwent a torque reversal twice. We have tried to understand whether this eccentrical sign-switch of the period derivative ($\dot{P}$) of the source could be accounted for with the existing torque models. We have found that the observed source properties are better estimated with the distances close to the lower limit of the previously predicted distance range ($5-13$ kpc). Furthermore, assuming an inclined …
