Synchrotron radiation is widely considered as the origin of the pulsed non-thermal emissions from rotation-powered pulsars in optical and X-ray bands. In this paper, we study the synchrotron radiation emitted by the created electron and positron pairs in the pulsar magnetosphere to constrain on the energy conversion efficiency from the Poynting flux to the particle energy flux. We model two pair creation processes, two-photon collision which efficiently works in young $γ$-ray pulsars ($\lesssim10^6$ yr), and magnetic pair creation which is the dominant process to supply pairs in old pulsars ($\gtrsim10^6$ yr). Using the analytical model, we derive the maximum synchrotron luminosity as a function of the energy conversion efficiency. From the comparison with observations, we find that the energy conversion efficiency to the accelerated particles should be an order of unity in the magnetosphere, even though we make a number of the optimistic assumptions to enlarge the synchrotron luminosity. In order to explain the luminosity of the non-thermal X-ray/optical emission from pulsars with low spin-down luminosity $L_{\rm sd}\lesssim10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$, non-dipole magnetic field components should be dominant at the emission region. For the $γ$-ray pulsars with $L_{\rm sd}\lesssim10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, observed $γ$-ray to X-ray and optical flux ratios are much higher than the flux ratio between curvature and the synchrotron radiations. We discuss some possibilities such as the coexistence of multiple accelerators in the magnetosphere as suggested from the recent numerical simulation results. The obtained maximum luminosity would be useful to select observational targets in X-ray and optical bands.
In this paper we study the generation of high energy emission from normal pulsars. For this purpose we consider the particles accelerated in the outer magnetosphere sliding along the closed magnetic field lines. It has been shown that in due course of motion the initial small pitch angle increases and at a certain distance from the neutron star the synchrotron emission becomes significant. We found that a region covered from $150$ to $500$ stellar radii the emission pattern is characterised by energies in the interval $(0.1-10)$ MeV.
On the braking index of the unusual high-B rotation-powered pulsar PSR J1846-0258
Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. When mass transfer is much reduced or ceases altogether, pulsed emission generated by particle acceleration in the magnetosphere and powered by the rotation of the neutron star is observed, prefer…
X-ray flux and pulse period fluctuations in an accretion-powered pulsar convey important information about the disk-magnetosphere interaction. It is shown that simultaneous flux and period measurements can be analysed with a Kalman filter based on the standard magnetocentrifugal accretion torque to generate accurate time-dependent estimates of three hidden state variables, which fluctuate stochastically and cannot be measured directly: the mass accretion rate, the Maxwell stress at the disk-magnetosphere boundary, and the radiative efficiency of accretion onto the stellar surface. The inferred…
In the last 25 years, a new generation of X-ray satellites imparted a significant leap forward in our knowledge of X-ray pulsars. The discovery of accreting and transitional millisecond pulsars proved that disk accretion can spin up a neutron star to a very high rotation speed. The detection of MeV-GeV pulsed emission from a few hundreds of rotation-powered pulsars probed particle acceleration in the outer magnetosphere, or even beyond. Also, a population of two dozens of magnetars has emerged. INTEGRAL played a central role to achieve these results by providing instruments with high temporal …
The aim of this work is to study the possible effects and biases on the radius constraints for rotation-powered millisecond pulsars when using Thomson approximation to describe electron scattering in the atmosphere models, instead of using exact formulation for Compton scattering. We compare the differences between the two models in the energy spectrum and angular distribution of the emitted radiation. We also analyse a self-generated synthetic phase-resolved energy spectrum, based on Compton atmosphere and the most X-ray luminous rotation-powered millisecond pulsars observed by the Neutron st…
We report here on the discovery with XMM-Newton of pulsations at 22 ms from the central compact source associated with IKT16, a supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The measured spin period and spin period derivative correspond to 21.7661076(2) ms and $2.9(3)\times10^{-14}$ s,s$^{-1}$, respectively. Assuming standard spin-down by magnetic dipole radiation, the spin-down power corresponds to $1.1\times10^{38}$,erg,s$^{-1}$ implying a Crab-like pulsar. This makes it the most energetic pulsar discovered in the SMC so far and a close analogue of PSR J0537--6910, a Crab-like pulsa…
The association of FRB 200428 with an X-ray burst (XRB) from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 offers important implications for the physical processes responsible for the fast radio burst (FRB) phenomena. By assuming that the XRB emission is produced in the magnetosphere, we investigate the possibility that the FRB emission is produced by shock-powered synchrotron maser (SM), which is phenomenologically described with a plenty of free parameters. The observational constraints on the model parameters indicate that the model can in principle be consistent with the FRB 200428 observations, if …
We report the first discovery of pulse phase modulating optical depths at the iron K-edge in accretion-powered X-ray pulsars, from Suzaku observations. A significant modulating optical depth of the iron K-edge is detected for Vela X-1 and GX 1+4. Similar trends are seen in GX 301-2 and OAO 1657-415, though with poor statistical significance. The observed iron K-edge exhibits a maximum optical depth, when the X-ray continuum dims, and there is no significant pulse phase variation in the ionization state of iron. The revealed changes in the optical depth with pulse phase can be explained as bein…
Particle acceleration is a fundamental process in many high-energy astrophysical environments and determines the spectral features of their synchrotron emission. We have studied the adiabatic stochastic acceleration (ASA) of electrons arising from the basic dynamics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and found that the ASA acts to efficiently harden the injected electron energy spectrum. The dominance of the ASA at low energies and the dominance of synchrotron cooling at high energies result in a broken power-law shape of both electron energy spectrum and photon synchrotron spectrum. Furt…
We report the discovery of a new Small Magellanic Cloud Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) at the edge of the Supernova Remnant (SNR)-DEM S5. The pulsar powered object has a cometary morphology similar to the Galactic PWN analogs PSR B1951+32 and 'the mouse'. It is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium. We estimate the Pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 700-2000 km/s for an age between 28-10 kyr. The radio spectral index for this SNR PWN pulsar system is flat (-0.29 $\pm$ 0.01) consistent with other similar objects. We infer that the putative pulsar has a radio spectral index…
Nuclear-powered X-ray millisecond pulsars are the third type of millisecond pulsars, which are powered by thermonuclear fusion processes. The corresponding brightness oscillations, known as burst oscillations, are observed during some thermonuclear X-ray bursts, when the burning and cooling accreted matter gives rise to an azimuthally asymmetric brightness pattern on the surface of the spinning neutron star. Apart from providing neutron star spin rates, this X-ray timing feature can be a useful tool to probe the fundamental physics of neutron star interior and surface. This chapter presents an…
NICER observed several rotation-powered millisecond pulsars to search for or confirm the presence of X-ray pulsations. When broad and sine-like, these pulsations may indicate thermal emission from hot polar caps at the magnetic poles on the neutron star surface. We report confident detections ($\ge4.7σ$ after background filtering) of X-ray pulsations for five of the seven pulsars in our target sample: PSR J0614-3329, PSR J0636+5129, PSR J0751+1807, PSR J1012+5307, and PSR J2241-5236, while PSR J1552+5437 and PSR J1744-1134 remain undetected. Of those, only PSR J0751+1807 and PSR J1012+5307 had…
For rotation powered pulsars, the rate of change of the spin period is expected to be positive. On the other hand, for a clean binary system (where gravity is the only force acting on the pulsar) the rate of change of the orbital period is expected to be negative. There are, however, some pulsars with the measurements of the rate of change of the spin period as negative quantities. Likewise, there are some pulsars with positive measurements of the rate of change of the orbital period. We investigate these cases by eliminating the external dynamical effects. We also look at those cases where at…
We report on broadband X-ray properties of the Rabbit pulsar wind nebula (PWN) associated with the pulsar PSR J1418-6058 using archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data, and a new NuSTAR observation. NuSTAR data above 10 keV allowed us to detect the 110-ms spin period of the pulsar, characterize its hard X-ray pulse profile, and resolve hard X-ray emission from the PWN after removing contamination from the pulsar and other overlapping point sources. The extended PWN was detected up to $\sim$20 keV and is well described by a power-law model with a photon index $Γ\approx$2. The PWN shape does not var…
As shown by broad-band observations, pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are characterized by a broken power-law spectrum of synchrotron emission. Based on the modern magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence theories, we investigate the re-acceleration of electrons in the PWN through the adiabatic stochastic acceleration (ASA), which arises from fundamental dynamics of MHD turbulence. The ASA acts to flatten the injected energy spectrum of electrons at low energies, while synchrotron cooling results in a steep spectrum of electrons at high energies. Their dominance in different energy ranges leads to a fla…
