The structural flexibility of low dimensional nanomaterials offers unique opportunities for studying the impact of strain on their physical properties and for developing innovative devices utilizing strain engineering. A key towards such goals is a device platform which allows the independent tuning and reliable calibration of the strain. Here we report the fabrication and characterization of graphene nanoelectromechanical resonators(GNEMRs) on flexible substrates. Combining substrate bending and electrostatic gating, we achieve the independent tuning of the strain and sagging in graphene and explore the nonlinear dynamics over a wide parameter space. Analytical and numerical studies of a continuum mechanics model, including the competing higher order nonlinear terms, reveal a comprehensive nonlinear dynamics phase diagram, which quantitatively explains the complex behaviors of GNEMRs.
We report the capacitive spring softening effect observed in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanoelectromechanical (NEM) resonators. The nanotube resonators adopt dual-gate configuration with both bottom-gate and side-gate capable of tuning the resonance frequency through capacitive coupling. Interestingly, downward resonance frequency shifting is observed with increasing side-gate voltage, which can be attributed to the capacitive softening of spring constant. Furthermore, in-plane vibrational modes exhibit much stronger spring softening effect than out-of-plan modes. Our dual-gate desig…
Tunneling two level systems affect damping, noise and decoherence in a wide range of devices, including nanoelectromechanical resonators, optomechanical systems, and qubits. Theoretically this interaction is usually described within the tunneling state model. The dimensions of such devices are often small compared to the relevant phonon wavelengths at low temperatures, and extensions of the theoretical description to reduced dimensions have been proposed, but lack conclusive experimental verification. We have measured the intrinsic damping and the frequency shift in magnetomotively driven alum…
In this report, we present nanoelectromechanical resonators fabricated with thin exfoliated crystals of a high-T$_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_1$Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The mechanical readout is performed by capacitively coupling their motion to a coplanar waveguide microwave cavity fabricated with a superconducting alloy of molybdenum-rhenium. We demonstrate mechanical frequency tunability with external dc-bias voltage, and quality factors up to 36600. Our spectroscopic and time-domain measurements show that mechanical dissipation in these systems is limited by the contact resistance ar…
Graphene membranes act as highly sensitive transducers in nanoelectromechanical devices due to their ultimate thinness. Previously, the piezoresistive effect has been experimentally verified in graphene using uniaxial strain in graphene. Here we report experimental and theoretical data on the uni- and biaxial piezoresistive properties of suspended graphene membranes applied to piezoresistive pressure sensors. A detailed model that utilizes a linearized Boltzman transport equation describes accurately the charge carrier density and mobility in strained graphene, and hence the gauge factor. The …
We have used nanoelectromechanical resonators to probe superfluid $^4$He at different temperature regimes, spanning over four orders of magnitude in damping. These regimes are characterized by the mechanisms which provide the dominant contributions to damping and the shift of the resonance frequency: tunneling two level systems at the lowest temperatures, ballistic phonons and rotons at few hundred mK, and laminar drag in the two-fluid regime below the superfluid transition temperature as well as in the normal fluid. Immersing the nanoelectromechanical resonators in fluid increases their effec…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials possess outstanding mechanical, electronic and optical properties, making them ideal materials for nanoelectromechanical applications. The recent discovery of 2D magnetic materials has promised a new class of magnetically active nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Here we demonstrate resonators made of 2D CrI3, whose mechanical resonances depend on the magnetic state of the material. We quantify the underlining effects of exchange and anisotropy magnetostriction by measuring the field dependence of the resonance frequency under a magnetic field parallel…
Tuning the frequency of a resonant element is of vital importance in both the macroscopic world, such as when tuning a musical instrument, as well as at the nanoscale. In particular, precisely controlling the resonance frequency of isolated nanoelectromechanical resonators (NEMS) has enabled innovations such as tunable mechanical filtering and mixing as well as commercial technologies such as robust timing oscillators. Much like their electronic device counterparts, the potential of NEMS grows when they are built up into large-scale arrays. Such arrays have enabled neutral-particle mass spectr…
Graphene mechanical resonators are the ultimate two-dimensional nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) with applications in sensing and signal processing. While initial devices have shown promising results, an ideal graphene NEMS resonator should be strain engineered, clamped at the edge without trapping gas underneath, and electrically integratable. In this letter, we demonstrate fabrication and direct electrical measurement of circular SU-8 polymer-clamped chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene drum resonators. The clamping increases device yield and responsivity, while providing a cleaner r…
Misfit strain is inevitable in various heterostructures like the graphene/MoS 2 van der Waals heterostructure. Although the misfit strain effect on electronic and other physical properties have been well studied, it is still unclear how will the misfit strain affect the performance of the nanomechanical resonator based on the graphene/MoS 2 heterostructure. By performing molecular dynamics simulations, we disclose a misfit strain-induced decoupling phenomenon between the graphene layer and the MoS 2 layer during the resonant oscillation of the heterostructure. A direct relationship between the…
We report spin and intensity coupling of an exciton-polariton condensate to the mechanical vibrations of a circular membrane microcavity. We optically drive the microcavity resonator at the lowest mechanical resonance frequency while creating an optically-trapped spin-polarized polariton condensate in different locations on the microcavity, and observe spin and intensity oscillations of the condensate at the vibration frequency of the resonator. Spin oscillations are induced by vibrational strain driving, whilst the modulation of the optical trap due to the displacement of the membrane causes …
We investigate the mechanical properties of freely suspended nanostrings fabricated from tensile-stressed, crystalline In$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$P. The intrinsic strain is a consequence of the epitaxial growth given by the lattice mismatch between the thin film and the substrate which is confirmed by x-ray diffraction measurements. The flexural eigenfrequencies of the nanomechanical string resonators reveal an orientation dependent stress with a maximum value of 650 MPa. The angular dependence is explained by a combination of anisotropic Young's modulus and a change of elastic properties caused by def…
Suspended aluminium nanoelectromechanical resonators have been fabricated, and the manufacturing process is described in this work. Device motion is driven and detected with a magnetomotive method. The resonance response has been measured at 4.2 K temperature in vacuum and low pressure $^4$He gas. At low oscillation amplitudes the resonance response is linear, producing Lorentzian line shapes, and Q-values up to 4400 have been achieved. At higher oscillation amplitudes the devices show nonlinear Duffing-like behavior. The devices are found to be extremely sensitive to pressure in $^4$He gas. S…
We demonstrate mechanical modulations of the exciton lifetime by using vibrational strain of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) resonator. The strain-induced modulations have anisotropic dependences on the crystal orientation, which reveals the origin of these modulations to be the piezoelectric effect. Numerical analyses based on the tunneling model clarify that the mechanical strain modulates the internal electric field and spatially separates the electrons and holes, leading to non-radiative exciton decomposition. This carrier separation also generates an optomechanical back-action force from the ph…
We propose a protocol to dissipatively cool a room temperature mechanical resonator using a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center ensemble. The spin ensemble is coupled to the resonator through its orbitally-averaged excited state, which has a spin-strain interaction that has not been previously characterized. We experimentally demonstrate that the spin-strain coupling in the excited state is $13.5\pm0.5$ times stronger than the ground state spin-strain coupling. We then theoretically show that this interaction combined with a high-density spin ensemble enables the cooling of a mechanical resonator fro…
Coupled nanomechanical resonators are interesting for both fundamental studies and practical applications as they offer rich and tunable oscillation dynamics. At present, the mechanical coupling in such systems is often mediated by a fixed geometry, such as a joint clamping point of the resonators or a displacement-dependent force. Here we show a graphene-integrated electromechanical system consisting of two physically separated mechanical resonators -- a comb-drive actuator and a suspended silicon beam -- that are tunably coupled by a graphene membrane. The graphene membrane, moreover, provid…
Networks of coupled resonators are an ubiquitous concept in physics, forming the basis of synchronization phenomena, metamaterial formation, nonreciprocal behavior and topological effects. Such systems are typically explored using optical or microwave resonators. In recent years, mechanical resonators have entered the stage as universal building block for resonator networks, both for their well-controlled mechanical properties and for their eigenfrequencies conveniently located in the radio-frequency regime. Vertically oriented nanomechanical pillar resonators are ideally suited for the dense …
In this study, we investigate the phonon antibunching effect in a coupled nonlinear micro/nanoelectromechanical system (MEMS/NEMS) resonator at a finite temperature. In the weak driving limit, the optimal condition for phonon antibunching is given by solving the stationary Liouville-von Neumann master equation. We show that at low temperature, the phonon antibunching effect occurs in the regime of weak nonlinearity and mechanical coupling, which is confirmed by analytical and numerical solutions. We also find that thermal noise can degrade or even destroy the antibunching effect for different …
We report on the experimental demonstration of atomically thin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-graphene van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure nanoelectromechanical resonators with ultrawide frequency tuning. With direct electrostatic gate tuning, these vdW resonators exhibit exceptional tunability, in general, Δf/f0 >200%, for continuously tuning the same device and the same mode (e.g., from ~23 to ~107MHz), up to Δf/f0 = 370%, the largest fractional tuning range in such resonators to date. This remarkable electromechanical resonance tuning is investigated by two different analytical models and fini…

Graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials associate remarkable mechanical, electronic, optical and phononic properties. As such, 2D materials are promising for hybrid systems that couple their elementary excitations (excitons, phonons) to their macroscopic mechanical modes. These built-in systems may yield enhanced strain-mediated coupling compared to bulkier architectures, e.g., comprising a single quantum emitter coupled to a nano-mechanical resonator. Here, using micro-Raman spectroscopy on pristine monolayer graphene drums, we demonstrate that the macroscopic flexural vibrations …
Nanoelectromechanical (NEMS) resonator networks have drawn increasing interest due to their potential applications in emergent behavior, sensing, phononics, and mechanical information processing. A challenge toward realizing these large-scale networks is the ability to controllably tune and reconfigure the collective, macroscopic properties of the network, which relies directly on the development of methods to characterize the constituent NEMS resonator building blocks and their coupling. In this work, we demonstrate a scalable optical technique to spatially map graphene NEMS networks and read…
