Bounded stationary reflection at a cardinal $λ$ is the assertion that every stationary subset of $λ$ reflects but there is a stationary subset of $λ$ that does not reflect at arbitrarily high cofinalities. We produce a variety of models in which bounded stationary reflection holds. These include models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at the successor of every singular cardinal $μ> \aleph_ω$ and models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at $μ^+$ but the approachability property fails at $μ$.
We investigate questions involving Aronszajn trees, square principles, and stationary reflection. We first consider two strengthenings of $\square(κ)$ introduced by Brodsky and Rinot for the purpose of constructing $κ$-Souslin trees. Answering a question of Rinot, we prove that the weaker of these strengthenings is compatible with stationary reflection at $κ$ but the stronger is not. We then prove that, if $μ$ is a singular cardinal, $\square_μ$ implies the existence of a special $μ^+$-tree with a $\mathrm{cf}(μ)$-ascent path, thus answering a question of Lücke.
Full reflection of stationary sets at regular cardinals
It is well-known that the square principle $\square_λ$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $λ^+$, whereas the weak square principle $\square^*_λ$ does not. Here we show that if $μ^{\mathrm{cf}(λ)} < λ$ for all $μ< λ$, then $\square^*_λ$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $E^{λ^+}_{\mathrm{cf}(λ)}$ in the forcing extension for adding a single Cohen subset of $λ^+$. It follows that indestructible forms of simultaneous stationary reflection entail the failure of weak square. We demonstrate this by settling a question concerning the subcomplet…
We prove that it is consistent that Club Stationary Reflection and the Special Aronszajn Tree Property simultaneously hold on $ω_2$, thereby contributing to the study of the tension between compactness and incompactness in set theory. The poset which produces the final model follows the collapse of an ineffable cardinal first with an iteration of club adding (with anticipation) and second with an iteration specializing Aronszajn trees. In the first part of the paper, we prove a general theorem about specializing Aronszajn trees on $ω_2$ after forcing with what we call $\mathcal{F}$-Strongly Pr…
We obtain an array of consistency results concerning trees and stationary reflection at double successors of regular cardinals $κ$, updating some classical constructions in the process. This includes models of $\mathsf{CSR}(κ^{++})\wedge \mathsf{TP}(κ^{++})$ (both with and without $\mathsf{AP}(κ^{++})$) and models of the conjunctions $\mathsf{SR}(κ^{++}) \wedge \mathsf{wTP}(κ^{++}) \wedge \mathsf{AP}(κ^{++})$ and $\neg \mathsf{AP}(κ^{++}) \wedge \mathsf{SR}(κ^{++})$ (the latter was originally obtained in joint work by Krueger and the first author \cite{GilKru:8fold}, and is here given using di…
Continuing the previous paper, we study the Strong Downward Löwenheim-Skolem Theorems (SDLSs) of the stationary logic and their variations. It has been shown that the SDLS for the ordinary stationary logic with weak second-order parameters down to $<\aleph_2$ is equivalent to the conjunction of CH and Cox's Diagonal Reflection Principle for internally clubness. We show that the SDLS for the stationary logic without weak second-order parameters down to $<2^{\aleph_0}$ implies that the size of the continuum is $\aleph_2$. In contrast, an internal interpretation of the stationary logic can satisf…
Continuing [Fuchino, Ottenbreit and Sakai[9, 10]] and [Fuchino and Ottenbreit[11]], we further study reflection principles in connection with the Löwenheim-Skolem Theorems of stationary logics. In this paper, we mainly analyze the situations in the models obtained by mixed support iteration of a supercompact length and then collapsing another supercompact cardinal to make it $(2^{\aleph_0})^+$. We show, among other things, that the reflection down to $< 2^{\aleph_0}$ of the non-metrizability of topological spaces with small character is independent from the reflection properties studied in [Fu…
We show that the tree property, stationary reflection and the failure of approachability at $κ^{++}$ are consistent with $\mathfrak{u}(κ) = κ^+ < 2^κ$, where $κ$ is a singular strong limit cardinal with the countable or uncountable cofinality. As a by-product, we show that if $λ$ is a regular cardinal, then stationary reflection at $λ^+$ is indestructible under all $λ$-cc forcings (out of general interest, we also state a related result for the preservation of club stationary reflection).
Bagaria and Väänänen developed a framework for studying the large cardinal strength of downwards Löwenheim-Skolem theorems and related set theoretic reflection properties. The main tool was the notion of symbiosis, originally introduced by the third author. Symbiosis provides a way of relating model theoretic properties of strong logics to definability in set theory. In this paper we continue the systematic investigation of symbiosis and apply it to upwards Löwenheim-Skolem theorems and reflection principles. To achieve this, we need to adapt the notion of symbiosis to a new form, called bound…
We introduce a generalization of stationary set reflection which we call "filter reflection", and show it is compatible with the axiom of constructibility as well as with strong forcing axioms. We prove the independence of filter reflection from ZFC, and present applications of filter reflection to the study of canonical equivalence relations of the higher Cantor and Baire spaces.
Fuchino-Maschio-Sakai~\cite{FuchinoEtAl_DRP_LST} proved that the Löwenheim-Skolem-Tarski (LST) property of Stationary Logic is equivalent to the Diagonal Reflection Principle on internally club sets ($\text{DRP}_{\text{IC}}$) introduced in \cite{DRP}. We prove that the restriction of the LST property to (downward) reflection of $Π^1_1$ formulas, which we call the $Π^1_1 \! \! \downarrow$-LST property, is equivalent to the \emph{internal} version of DRP from \cite{Cox_RP_IS}. Combined with results from \cite{Cox_RP_IS}, this shows that the $Π^1_1 \! \! \downarrow$-LST Property for Stationary Lo…
