We probe the possible anisotropy of the Universe by using the JLA compilation of type-Ia supernovae. We apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to constrain the amplitude and direction of anisotropy in three cosmological models. For the dipole-modulated $Λ$CDM model, the anisotropic amplitude is consistent with zero at $68\%$ C.L., and has an upper bound $A_D<1.98\times10^{-3}$ at $95\%$ C.L. Regardless of much larger uncertainty, we find the dipole direction of JLA is amazingly opposite to that of Union2. Similar results are found for the dipole-modulated $w$CDM and CPL models. Thus, the Universe is still well consistent with the isotropy according to the JLA compilation.
We test the cosmological principle by fitting a dipolar modulation of distance modulus and searching for an evolution of this modulation with respect to cosmological redshift. Based on a redshift tomographic method, we divide the Joint Light-curve Analysis compilation of supernovae of type Ia into different redshift bins, and employ a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo method to infer the anisotropic amplitude and direction in each redshift bin. However, we do not find any significant deviations from the cosmological principle, and the anisotropic amplitude is stringently constrained to be less than a f…
The standard cosmology strongly relies upon the Cosmological Principle, which consists on the hypotheses of large scale isotropy and homogeneity of the Universe. Testing these assumptions is, therefore, crucial to determining if there are deviations from the standard cosmological paradigm. In this paper, we use the latest type Ia supernova compilations, namely JLA and Union2.1 to test the cosmological isotropy at low redshift ranges ($z<0.1$). This is performed through a Bayesian selection analysis, in which we compare the standard, isotropic model, with another one including a dipole correcti…
We investigate the validity of the Cosmological Principle by mapping the cosmological parameters $H_0$ and $q_0$ through the celestial sphere. In our analysis, performed in a low-redshift regime to follow a model-independent approach, we use two compilations of type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), namely the Union2.1 and the JLA datasets. Firstly, we show that the angular distributions for both SNe Ia datasets are statistically anisotropic at high confidence level ($p$-value $<$ 0.0001), in particular the JLA sample. Then we find that the cosmic expansion and acceleration are mainly of dipolar type, w…
The observational cosmology with distant Type Ia supernovae (SNe) as standard candles claims that the Universe is in accelerated expansion, caused by a large fraction of dark energy. In this paper we investigate the SN Ia environment, studying the impact of the nature of their host galaxies on the Hubble diagram fitting. The supernovae (192 SNe) used in the analysis were extracted from Joint-Light-curves-Analysis (JLA) compilation of high-redshift and nearby supernovae which is the best one to date. The analysis is based on the empirical fact that SN Ia luminosities depend on their light curve…
We investigate the validity of the Cosmological Principle by constraining the cosmological parameters $H_0$ and $q_0$ through the celestial sphere. Our analyses are performed in a low-redshift regime in order to follow a model independent approach, using both Union2.1 and JLA Type Ia Supernovae (SNe) compilations. We find that the preferred direction of the $H_0$ parameter in the sky is consistent with the bulk flow motion of our local Universe in the Union2.1 case, while the $q_0$ directional analysis seem to be anti-correlated with the $H_0$ for both data sets. Furthermore, we test the consi…
The assumption of homogeneity and isotropy on large scales is one of the main hypotheses of the standard cosmological model. In this paper, we revisit a test of cosmological isotropy using type Ia supernova (SN Ia) distances provided by the latest SN Ia compilation available, namely, the Pantheon compilation. We perform a model-independent analysis by selecting low-redshift subsamples lying in two redshift intervals, i.e., z $\leq$ 0.10 and z $\leq$ 0.20. By mapping the directional asymmetry of cosmological parameters across the sky, we show that the current SN Ia data favor the hypothesis of …
Recent studies have indicated that an anisotropic cosmic expansion may exist. In this paper, we use three datasets of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to probe the isotropy of cosmic acceleration. For the Union2.1 dataset, the direction and magnitude of the dipole are $(l=309.3^{\circ} {}^{+ 15.5^{\circ}}_{-15.7^{\circ}} ,\ b = -8.9^{\circ} {}^{ + 11.2^{\circ}}_{-9.8^{\circ}} ),\ A=(1.46 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{-3}$. For the Constitution dataset, the results are $(l=67.0^{\circ}{}^{+ 66.5^{\circ}}_{-66.2^{\circ}},\ b=-0.6^{\circ}{}^{+ 25.2^{\circ}}_{-26.3^{\circ}}),\ A=(4.4 \pm 5.0) \times 10^{-4}$. F…
In this paper, we study an anisotropic universe model with Bianchi-I metric using Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA) sample of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Because light-curve parameters of SNe Ia vary with different cosmological models and SNe Ia samples, we fit the SNe Ia light-curve parameters and cosmological parameters simultaneously employing Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Therefore, the results on the amount of deviation from isotropy of the dark energy equation of state ($δ$), and the level of anisotropy of the large-scale geometry ($Σ_0$) at present, are totally model-independent. The…
We use the most recent type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observations to perform a statistical comparison between the standard $Λ$CDM model and its extensions [$w$CDM and $w(z)$CDM] and some alternative cosmologies: namely, the Dvali--Gabadadze--Porrati (DGP) model, a power-law $f(R)$ scenario in the metric formalism and an example of vacuum decay [$Λ(t)$CDM] cosmology in which the dilution of pressureless matter is attenuated with respect to the usual $a^{-3}$ scaling due to the interaction of the dark matter and dark energy fields. We perform a Bayesian model selection analysis using the \textsc{M…
The dependence of Hubble parameter on redshift can be determined directly from the dipole of luminosity distance to Supernovae Ia. We investigate the possibility of using the data on dipole of the luminosity distance obtained from the Supernovae Ia compilations SDSS, Union2.1, JLA and Pantheon to distinguish the dark energy models.
We have used the Union2.1 SNIa compilation to search for possible Hubble expansion anisotropies, dividing the sky in 9 solid angles containing roughly the same number of SNIa, as well as in the two Galactic hemispheres. We identified only one sky region, containing 82 SNIa (~15% of total sample with $z>0.02$), that indeed appears to share a significantly different Hubble expansion than the rest of the sample. However, this behavior appears to be attributed to the joint "erratic" behavior of only three SNIa and not to an anisotropic expansion. We also find that the northern and southern galacti…
We constrain three cosmological models, i.e. the concordance cold dark matter plus a cosmological constant ($Λ$CDM) model, Power-law (PL) model, and $R_h=ct$ model using the available local probes, which includes the JLA compilation of type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), the direct measurement of Hubble constant (H(z)), and the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). For $Λ$CDM model, we consider two different cases, i.e. zero and non-zero spatial curvature. We find that by using the JLA alone, it is indistinguishable between $Λ$CDM and PL models, but the $R_h=ct$ model is strongly disfavored. If we comb…
We analyze the magnitude-redshift data of type Ia supernovae included in the Union and Union2 compilations in the framework of an anisotropic Bianchi type I cosmological model and in the presence of a dark energy fluid with anisotropic equation of state. We find that the amount of deviation from isotropy of the equation of state of dark energy, the skewness δ, and the present level of anisotropy of the large-scale geometry of the Universe, the actual shear Σ_0, are constrained in the ranges -0.16 < δ< 0.12 and -0.012 < Σ_0 < 0.012 (1σC.L.) by Union2 data. Supernova data are then compatible wit…
The heliocentric redshifts ($z_\mathrm{hel}$) reported for 150 Type Ia supernovae in the Pantheon compilation are significantly discrepant from their corresponding values in the JLA compilation. Both catalogues include corrections to the redshifts and magnitudes of the supernovae to account for the motion of the heliocentric frame relative to the `CMB rest frame', as well as corrections for the directionally coherent bulk motion of local galaxies with respect to this frame. The latter is done employing modelling of peculiar velocities which assume the $Λ$CDM cosmological model but nevertheless…
Distance measurements are currently the most powerful tool to study the expansion history of the universe without specifying its matter content nor any theory of gravitation. Assuming only an isotropic, homogeneous and flat universe, in this work we introduce a model-independent method to reconstruct directly the deceleration function via a piecewise function. Including a penalty factor, we are able to vary continuously the complexity of the deceleration function from a linear case to an arbitrary $(n+1)$-knots spline interpolation. We carry out a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis to determine the bes…
Recently, the common methodology used to transform type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) into genuine standard candles has been suffering criticism. Indeed, it assumes a particular cosmological model (namely the flat $Λ$CDM) to calibrate the standardisation corrections parameters, i.e. the dependency of the supernova peak absolute magnitude on its colour, post-maximum decline rate and host galaxy mass. As a result, this assumption could make the data compliant to the assumed cosmology and thus nullify all works previously conducted on model comparison. In this work, we verify the viability of these hypo…

We present a method to test the isotropy of the magnitude-redshift relation of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and single out the most discrepant direction (in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio) with respect to the all-sky data. Our technique accounts for possible directional variations of the corrections for SNe Ia and yields all-sky maps of the best-fit cosmological parameters with arbitrary angular resolution. To show its potential, we apply our method to the recent Union2.1 compilation, building maps with three different angular resolutions. We use a Monte Carlo method to estimate the statist…
It is now common practice to constrain cosmological parameters using supernovae (SNe) catalogues constructed from several different surveys. Before performing such a joint analysis, however, one should check that parameter constraints derived from the individual SNe surveys that make up the catalogue are mutually consistent. We describe a statistically-robust mutual consistency test, which we calibrate using simulations, and apply it to each pairwise combination of the surveys making up, respectively, the UNION2 catalogue and the very recent JLA compilation by Betoule et al. We find no inconsi…
Using measurements of $H(z)$ and $d_\mathrm{A}(z)$ from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) DR12 and luminosity distances from the Joint Lightcurve Analysis (JLA) compilation of supernovae (SN), we measure $H_0 r_\mathrm{d}$ without any model assumption. Our measurement of $H_0 r_\mathrm{d} = $($10033.20^{+333.10}_{-371.81}$ (SN) $\pm$ 128.19 (BAO)) km s$^{-1}$ is consistent with Planck constrains for the flat ΛCDM model. We also report that higher expansion history rates $h(z)$ (among the possibilities) as well as lower-bound values of $H_0 r\mathrm{d}$ result in better interna…
Motivated by an updated compilation of observational Hubble data (OHD) which consist of 51 points in the redshift range 0.07<z<2.36, we study an interesting model known as Cardassian which drives the late cosmic acceleration without a dark energy component. Our compilation contains 31 data points measured with the differential age method by Jimenez & Loeb, and 20 data points obtained from clustering of galaxies. We focus on two modified Friedmann equations: the original Cardassian (OC) expansion and the modified polytropic Cardassian (MPC). The dimensionless Hubble, E(z), and the deceleration …
We apply two methods, namely the Gaussian processes and the non-parametric smoothing procedure, to reconstruct the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ as a function of redshift from 15 measurements of the expansion rate obtained from age estimates of passively evolving galaxies. These reconstructions enable us to derive the luminosity distance to a certain redshift $z$, calibrate the light-curve fitting parameters accounting for the (unknown) intrinsic magnitude of type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) and construct cosmological model-independent Hubble diagrams of SNe Ia. In order to test the compatibility between …
The cosmological principle is one of the cornerstones in modern cosmology. It assumes that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on cosmic scales. Both the homogeneity and the isotropy of the universe should be tested carefully. In the present work, we are interested in probing the possible preferred direction in the distribution of type Ia supernovae (SNIa). To our best knowledge, two main methods have been used in almost all of the relevant works in the literature, namely the hemisphere comparison (HC) method and the dipole fitting (DF) method. However, the results from these two methods…
The assumption of isotropy -- that the Universe looks the same in all directions on large scales -- is fundamental to the standard cosmological model. This model forms the building blocks of essentially all of our cosmological knowledge to date. It is therefore critical to empirically test in which regimes its core assumptions hold. Anisotropies in the cosmic expansion are expected on small scales due to nonlinear structures in the late Universe, however, the extent to which these anisotropies might impact our low-redshift observations remains to be fully tested. In this paper, we use fully ge…
The cosmological principle asserts that the Universe looks spatially homogeneous and isotropic on sufficiently large scales. Given the fundamental implications of the cosmological principle, it is important to empirically test its validity on various scales. In this paper, we use the Type Ia supernova (SN~Ia) magnitude-redshift relation, from both the Pantheon and JLA compilations, to constrain theoretically motivated anisotropies in the Hubble flow. In particular, we constrain the quadrupole moment in the effective Hubble parameter and the dipole moment in the effective deceleration parameter…
Observations reveal a `bulk flow' in the local Universe which is faster and extends to much larger scales than is expected around a typical observer in the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. This is expected to result in a scale-dependent dipolar modulation of the acceleration of the expansion rate inferred from observations of objects within the bulk flow. From a maximum-likelihood analysis of the Joint Lightcurve Analysis (JLA) catalogue of Type Ia supernovae we find that the deceleration parameter, in addition to a small monopole, indeed has a much bigger dipole component aligned with the CMB dipol…
We re-examine the contentious question of constraints on anisotropic expansion from Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) in the light of a novel determination of peculiar velocities, which are crucial to test isotropy with supernovae out to distances $\lesssim 200/h$ Mpc. We re-analyze the Joint Light-Curve Analysis (JLA) Supernovae (SNe) data, improving on previous treatments of peculiar velocity corrections and their uncertainties (both statistical and systematic) by adopting state-of-the-art flow models constrained independently via the 2M$++$ galaxy redshift compilation. We also introduce a novel pro…
Peculiar velocities of objects in the nearby universe are correlated due to the gravitational pull of large-scale structure. By measuring these velocities, we have a unique opportunity to test the cosmological model at the lowest redshifts. We perform this test, using current data to constrain the amplitude of the "signal" covariance matrix describing the velocities and their correlations. We consider a new, well-calibrated "Supercal" set of low-redshift SNe Ia as well as a set of distances derived from the fundamental plane relation of 6dFGS galaxies. Analyzing the SN and galaxy data separate…
We test the anisotropy in the Finslerian cosmological model with the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) fluxes of 808 quasars. The dipole amplitude is $A_D=0.302_{ -0.124}^{ +0.185}$ and the dipole direction points towards $(l, b) = ( 288.92_{~ -28.80^{\circ}}^{^{\circ}+23.74^{\circ}}, 6.10_{~ -16.40^{\circ}}^{^{\circ} +16.55^{\circ}} )$. We find that the dipole direction from the X-ray and UV fluxes of quasars is very close to the dipole direction given by the "Joint Light-curve Analysis" (JLA) compilation in the Finslerian cosmological model and the angular difference between the two dipole directio…
Since Dirac stated his Large Number Hypothesis the space-time variation of fundamental constants has been an active subject of research. Here we analyze the possible spatial variation of two fundamental constants: the fine structure constant α and the speed of light c. We study the effects of such variations on the luminosity distance and on the peak luminosity of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). For this, we consider the change of each fundamental constant separately and discuss a dipole model for its variation. Elaborating upon our previous work, we take into account the variation of the peak lu…

We test the distance--duality relation $η\equiv d_L / [ (1 + z)^2 d_A ] = 1$ between cosmological luminosity distance ($d_L$) from the JLA SNe Ia compilation (arXiv:1401.4064) and angular-diameter distance ($d_A$) based on Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS; arXiv:1607.03155) and WiggleZ baryon acoustic oscillation measurements (arXiv:1105.2862, arXiv:1204.3674). The $d_L$ measurements are matched to $d_A$ redshift by a statistically consistent compression procedure. With Monte Carlo methods, nontrivial and correlated distributions of $η$ can be explored in a straightforward manner …
