We give simple examples of weakly coupled or free quantum mechanical systems that exhibit scale invariance with an anomalous dimension for a conserved current. In these models scaling as an exact symmetry only emerges in a large N limit, but it remains as an approximate symmetry even at finite N.
Quantum anomalies give rise to new non-dissipative transport phenomena in relativistic fluids induced by external electromagnetic fields and vortices. These phenomena can be studied in holographic models with Chern-Simons couplings dual to anomalies in field theory. We perform a computation in AdS/CFT of the anomalous transport coefficients in a holographic massive gravity model, and find that the anomalous conductivities turn out to be independent of the holographic disorder couplings of the model. To arrive at this result we suggest a new definition of the energy-momentum tensor in presence …
The usual condensed matter lattice theories do not include dynamical electromagnetic (EM) field and do not have higher symmetries naturally (unless we engineer fine-tuned toy models to realize higher symmetries). However, for gapped systems, (anomalous) higher symmetries can emerge from the usual condensed matter theories at low energies (usually in a spontaneously broken form). We pointed out that spontaneously broken emergent higher symmetries are nothing but a kind of topological orders. The emergent (anomalous) higher symmetries can be used to constrain possible phase transitions and possi…
On-shell amplitude methods have proven to be extremely efficient for calculating anomalous dimensions. We further elaborate on these methods to show that, by the use of an angular momentum decomposition, the one-loop anomalous dimensions can be reduced to essentially a sum of products of partial waves. We apply this to the SM EFT, and show how certain classes of anomalous dimensions have their origin in the same partial-wave coefficients. We also use our result to obtain a generic formula for the one-loop anomalous dimensions of nonlinear sigma models at any order in the energy expansion, and …
A wave pulse (be it a gravitational wave or a light wave) undergoes anomalous dispersion in a vacuum in flat spacetimes with an even number of spatial dimensions even if all the frequencies move at the same speed. Such an anomalous dispersion does not occur in spacetimes with an odd number of spatial dimensions. We study various gravity theories and show that dispersion-free propagation is possible in even number of spatial dimensions if the background is not the Minkowski but the de Sitter spacetime and the gravity theory is massive gravity with a tuned mass in terms of the cosmological const…
We compute the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of non-derivative composite operators with an arbitrary number of fields $n$ in the $O(N)$ vector model with cubic anisotropy at the one-loop order in the $ε$-expansion. The complete closed-form expression for the anomalous dimensions of the operators which do not undergo mixing effects is derived and the structure of the general solution to the mixing problem is outlined. As examples, the full explicit solution for operators with up to $n=6$ fields is presented and a sample of the OPE coefficients is calculated. The main features of the spectrum…
D-dimensional Conformal Field Theories with anomalous dimensions as Dual Resonance Models
We argue a smallness of gauge couplings in abelian quiver gauge theories, taking the anomaly cancellation condition into account. In theories of our interest there exist chiral fermions leading to chiral gauge anomalies, and an anomaly-free gauge coupling tends to be small, and hence can give a non-trivial condition of the weak gravity conjecture. As concrete examples, we consider $U(1)^{k}$ gauge theories with a discrete symmetry associated with cyclic permutations between the gauge groups, and identify anomaly-free $U(1)$ gauge symmetries and the corresponding gauge couplings. Owing to this …
We revisit supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on the target manifold $CP^{N-1}$ and $SO(N)/SO(N-2)\times U(1)$ in four dimensions. These models are formulated as gauged linear models, but it is indicated that the Wess-Zumino term should be added to the linear model since the hidden local symmetry is anomalous. Applying a procedure used for quantization of anomalous gauge theories to the nonlinear models, we determine the form of the Wess-Zumino term, by which a global symmetry in the linear model becomes smaller in the action than the conventional one. Moreover, we analyze the resulting lin…
