We study the unitary time evolution of antiferromagnetic order in the Hubbard model after a quench starting from the perfect Néel state. In this setup, which is well suited for experiments with cold atoms, one can distinguish fundamentally different pathways for melting of long-range order at weak and strong interaction. In the Mott insulating regime, melting of long-range order occurs due to the ultra-fast transfer of energy from charge excitations to the spin background, while local magnetic moments and their exchange coupling persist during the process. The latter can be demonstrated by a local spin-precession experiment. At weak interaction, local moments decay along with the long-range order. The dynamics is governed by residual quasiparticles, which are reflected in oscillations of the off-diagonal components of the momentum distribution. Such oscillations provide an alternative route to study the prethermalization phenomenon and its influence on the dynamics away from the integrable (noninteracting) limit. The Hubbard model is solved within nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, using the density matrix-renormalization group as an impurity solver.
We investigate effects of doped holes' hopping on Neel order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Semiclassical staggered moments are computed by solving saddle point equations derived from a path-integral formalism. Effects of quantum fluctuations are taken into account by the Schwinger boson mean field theory. We argue that hopping of doped holes is ineffective in suppressing Neel order compared to rapid supprestion of Neel order in high-temperature superconductors. After destruction of Neel order, the quantum disordered phase sets in. Taking the strong coupling limit in the quantum disorde…
We investigate melting of stripe phases in the overdoped regime x>0.3 of the two-dimensional t-t'-U Hubbard model, using a spin rotation invariant form of the slave boson representation. We show that the spin and charge order disappear simultaneously, and discuss a mechanism stabilizing bond-centered and site-centered stripe structures.
Unconventional phases often occur where two competing mechanisms compensate. An excellent example is the ionic Hubbard model where the alternating local potential $δ$, favoring a band insulator (BI), competes with the local repulsion $U$, favoring a Mott insulator (MI). By continuous unitary transformations we derive effective models in which we study the softening of various excitons. The softening signals the instability towards new phases that we describe on the mean-field level. On increasing $U$ from the BI in two dimensions, we find a bond-ordered phase breaking orientational symmetry du…
Diagrammatic Monte Carlo -- the technique for numerically exact summation of all Feynman diagrams to high orders -- offers a unique unbiased probe of continuous phase transitions. Being formulated directly in the thermodynamic limit, the diagrammatic series is bound to diverge and is not resummable at the transition due to the non-analyticity of physical observables. This enables the detection of the transition with controlled error bars from an analysis of the series coefficients alone, avoiding the challenge of evaluating physical observables near the transition. We demonstrate this techniqu…
Motivated by recent numerical results, we study the phase diagram of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard (KHM) model, especially the nature of its quantum critical points. The phase diagram of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model can be understood by breaking the SO(4) symmetry of our previous work down to U(1)_spin x U(1)_charge x PH symmetry. The vortices of the inplane Neel phase carry charge, and the proliferation of the charged magnetic vortex drives the transition between the inplane Neel phase and the QSH insulator phase; this transition belongs to the 3d XY universality class. The transition between the liqu…
We study the thermodynamic properties of the 3D Hubbard model for temperatures down to the Neel temperature using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. In particular we calculate the energy, entropy, density, double occupancy and nearest-neighbor spin correlations as a function of chemical potential, temperature and repulsion strength. To make contact with cold-gas experiments, we also compute properties of the system subject to an external trap in the local density approximation. We find that an entropy per particle $S/N \approx 0.65(6)$ at $U/t=8$ is sufficient to achieve a Neel state in the …
We investigate the ground state properties of the two dimensional half-filled one band Hubbard model in the strong (large-U) to intermediate coupling limit ({\it i.e.} away from the strict Heisenberg limit) using an effective spin-only low-energy theory that includes nearest-neighbor exchange, ring exchange, and all other spin interactions to order t(t/U)^3. We show that the operator for the staggered magnetization, transformed for use in the effective theory, differs from that for the order parameter of the spin model by a renormalization factor accounting for the increased charge fluctuation…
For a simple-cubic optical lattice with lattice spacing d, occupied by two species of fermionic atoms of mass m that interact repulsively, we ask what conditions maximize the Neel temperature in the Mott insulating phase at density one atom per site, with equal numbers of the two species. This maximum occurs near the edge of the regime where the system is well-approximated by the usual Hubbard model. The correction to the Hubbard-model approximation that produces a "direct" ferromagnetic interaction between atoms in nearest-neighbor Wannier orbitals is the leading term that limits how high the…
We non-perturbatively investigate the ground state magnetic properties of the 2D half-filled SU($2N$) Hubbard model in the square lattice by using the projector determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations combined with the method of local pinning fields. Long-range Neel orders are found for both the SU(4) and SU(6) cases at small and intermediate values of $U$. In both cases, the long-range Neel moments exhibit non-monotonic behavior with respect to $U$, which first grow and then drop as $U$ increases. This result is fundamentally different from the SU(2) case in which the Neel moments increas…
The antiferromagnetic phase of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Hubbard model with nearest neighbors hopping is studied on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the quantum SU(2)xU(1) rotor approach that yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties the model and satisfy the Mermin-Wagner theorem. The collective variables for charge and spin are isolated in the form of the space-time fluctuating U(1) phase field and rotating spin quantization axis governed by the SU(2) symmetry, respectively. As a result interacting…
Using recently developed quantum SU(2)xU(1) rotor approach, that provides a self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state we have performed electronic spectral function calculations for the Hubbard model on the square lattice. The collective variables for charge and spin are isolated in the form of the space-time fluctuating U(1) phase field and rotating spin quantization axis governed by the SU(2) symmetry, respectively. As a result interacting electrons appear as composite objects consisting of bare fermions with attached U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields. This allows us to write the fe…
Motivated by recent experiments with ultra-cold quantum gases in optical lattices we study the decay of the staggered moment in the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model starting from a perfect Neel state using exact diagonalization and the iTEBD method. This extends previous work in which the same problem has been addressed for pure spin Hamiltonians. As a main result, we show that the relaxation dynamics of the double occupancy and of the staggered moment are different. The former is controlled by the nearest-neighbor tunneling rate while the latter is much slower and strongly dependent on the…
We employ the determinant projector quantum Monte-Carlo method to investigate the ground state magnetic properties in the Mott insulating states of the half-filled SU(4) and SU(6) Fermi-Hubbard model in the 2D square lattice, which is free of the sign problem. The long-range antiferromagnetic Neel order is found for the SU(4) case with a small residual Neel moment. Quantum fluctuations are even stronger in the SU(6) case. Numeric results are consistent with either a vanishing or even weaker Neel ordering than that of SU(4).
One-band Hubbard model with hopping parameter $t$ and Coulomb repulsion $U$ is considered at half filling. By means of the Schwinger bosons and slave Fermions representation of the electron operators and integrating out the spin-singlet Fermi fields an effective Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic exchange constant is obtained for vectors which identifies the local orientation of the spin of the itinerant electrons. The amplitude of the spin vectors is an effective spin of the itinerant electrons accounting for the fact that some sites, in the ground state, are doubly occupied or empty. Ac…

We explore the effect of local charge fluctuations on the spin response of a Mott insulator by deriving an effective spin model, and studying it using Schwinger boson mean field theory. Applying this to La$_2$CuO$_4$, we show that an accurate fit to the magnon dispersion relation, measured by Coldea {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 5377 (2001)] is obtained with Hubbard model parameters $U \approx 2.34 eV$, and $t \approx 360 meV$. These parameters lead to estimates of the staggered magnetization ($m_s \approx 0.25$), spin wave velocity ($c\approx 800 meV$-Å), and spin stiffness ($ρ_s \…
Paramagnetic solutions of the ionic Hubbard model at half-filling in dimensions $D>2$ indicate that the band and the Mott insulator phases are separated by a metallic phase. We present zero-temperature dynamical mean-field theory solutions, which include antiferromagnetic long-range order, and show that the one-particle spectral functions always possess an energy gap and therefore the system is insulating for all interaction strengths. The staggered charge density modulation coexists with antiferromagnetic long-range order of Néel type.
The competition between evolution time, interaction strength, and temperature challenges our understanding of many-body quantum systems out-of-equilibrium. Here we consider a benchmark system, the Hubbard dimer, which allows us to explore all the relevant regimes and calculate exactly the related average quantum work. At difference with previous studies, we focus on the effect of increasing temperature, and show how this can turn competition between many-body interactions and driving field into synergy. We then turn to use recently proposed protocols inspired by density functional theory to ex…
The phase diagram of the Hubbard model is studied at weak coupling in two and three spatial dimensions. It is shown that the Neel temperature and the order parameter in d=3 are smaller than the Hartree-Fock predictions by a factor of q=0.2599. For d=2 we show that the self-consistent (sc) perturbation series bears no relevance to the behavior of the exact solution of the Hubbard model in the symmetry-broken phase. We also investigate an anisotropic model and show that the coupling between planes is essential for the validity of mean-field-type order parameters.
The magnetic properties and Mott transition of the half-filled Hubbard model on the 1/5 depleted square lattice with frustration is studied at zero temperature by the variational cluster approximation. The $(π,π)$ Néel ordering (AF) is stable in a wide region of the phase diagram and almost completely veils the non-magnetic Mott transition for the unfrustrated case. However, AF is severely suppressed by the frustration and even with moderate frustrations the non-magnetic Mott transition takes place in the range where the intra-dimer hoppings are larger than the intra-plaquette hoppings.
Motivated by the recent experimental data [Phys. Rev. B 79, 100502 (2009)] indicating the existence of a pure stripe charge order over unprecedently wide temperature range in La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4, we investigate the temperature-induced melting of the metallic stripe phase. In spite of taking into account local dynamic correlations within a real-space dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we observe a mean-field like melting of the stripe order irrespective of the choice of the next-nearest neighbor hopping. The temperature dependence of the single-particle spectral function …
We theoretically discuss the mechanism for the peculiar nonlinear conduction in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors θ-(BEDT-TTF)2X [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] through the melting of stripe-type charge order. An extended Peierls-Hubbard model attached to metallic electrodes is investigated by a nonequilibrium Green's function technique. A novel current-voltage characteristic appears in a coexistent state of stripe-type and nonstripe 3-fold charge orders, where the applied bias melts mainly the stripe-type charge order through the reduction of lattice distortion, wherea…
We propose the $π$ flux triangular lattice Hubbard model ($π$-THM) as a prototypical setup to stabilize magnetically disordered quantum states of matter in the presence of charge fluctuations. The quantum paramagnetic domain of the $π$-THM which we identify for intermediate Hubbard U is framed by a Dirac semi-metal for weak coupling and by 120${}^{\circ}$ Néel order for strong coupling. Generalizing the Klein duality from spin Hamiltonians to tight-binding models, the $π$-THM maps to a Hubbard model which corresponds to the $(J_H, J_K)=(-1,2)$ Heisenberg-Kitaev model in its strong coupling lim…
We investigate the quantum phase transitions in the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice by means of the path-integral renormalization group (PIRG) method with a new iteration scheme proposed recently. It is found that as the Hubbard interaction $U$ increases, the paramagnetic metallic state undergoes a first-order phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating (NMI) state at $U_{c1}\sim 7.7t$, which is followed by another first-order transition to a $120^\circ$ Néel ordered state at $U_{c2}\sim 10t$, where $t$ is the transfer integral. Our results ensure the existence of the inte…
The effect of geometrical frustration in a two-dimensional 1/4-filled strongly correlated electron system is studied theoretically, motivated by layered organic molecular crystals. An extended Hubbard model on the square lattice is considered, with competing nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction, V, and that of next-nearest neighbor along one of the diagonals, V', which favor different charge ordered states. Based on exact diagonalization calculations, we find a metallic phase stabilized over a broad window at V' ~ V even for large Coulomb repulsion strengths as a result of frustrating the char…
A novel magnetic ground state is reported for the Hubbard Hamiltonian in strained graphene. When the chemical potential lies close to the Dirac point, the ground state exhibits locally both the Néel and ferromagnetic orders, even for weak Hubbard interaction. Whereas the Néel order parameter remains of the same sign in the entire system, the magnetization at the boundary takes the opposite sign from the bulk. The total magnetization this way vanishes, and the magnetic ground state is globally only an antiferromagnet. This peculiar ordering stems from the nature of the strain-induced single par…
Photoinduced melting of charge order is calculated by using the exact many-electron wave function coupled with classically treated phonons in the one-dimensional quarter-filled Hubbard model with Peierls and Holstein types of electron-phonon couplings. The model parameters are taken from recent experiments on (EDO-TTF)_2PF_6 (EDO-TTF=ethylenedioxy-tetrathiafulvalene) with (0110) charge order, where transfer integrals are modulated by molecular displacements (bond-coupled phonons) and site energies by molecular deformations (charge-coupled phonons). The charge-transfer photoexcitation from (011…
The time-dependent exact-diagonalization method is used to study the light-induced phase transition of magnetic orders in the anisotropic triangular-lattice Hubbard model. Calculating the spin correlation function, we confirm that the phase transition from the 120$^{\circ}$ order to the Néel order can take place due to high-frequency periodic fields. We show that the effective Heisenberg-model Hamiltonian derived from the high-frequency expansion by the Floquet theory describes the present system very well and that the ratio of the exchange interactions expressed in terms of the frequency and …
We analyze the competition of magnetism and superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate interaction strength, including the possibility of incommensurate spiral magnetic order. Using an unbiased renormalization group approach, we compute magnetic and superconducting order parameters in the ground state. In addition to previously established regions of Neel order coexisting with d-wave superconductivity, the calculations reveal further coexistence regions where superconductivity is accompanied by incommensurate magnetic order.
We study the phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model (IHM) at half-filling using dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), with two impurity solvers, namely, iterated perturbation theory (IPT) and continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC). The physics of the IHM is governed by the competition between the staggered potential $Δ$ and the on-site Hubbard U. In both the methods we find that for a finite $Δ$ and at zero temperature, anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) order sets in beyond a threshold $U=U_{AF}$ via a first order phase transition below which the system is a paramagnetic band insulator. Both the m…
Non-local correlation effects in the half-filled Hubbard model on an isotropic triangular lattice are studied within a spin polarized extension of the dual fermion approach. A competition between the antiferromagnetic non-collinear and the spin liquid states is strongly enhanced by an incorporation of a k-dependent self-energy beyond the local dynamical mean-field theory. The dual fermion correc- tions drastically decrease the energy of a spin liquid state while leaving the non-collinear magnetic states almost non-affected. This makes the spin liquid to become a preferable state in a certain i…
Recent ultrafast magnetic-sensitive measurements [Phys. Rev. B 92, 184429 (2015) and Phys. Rev. B 96, 184414 (2017)] have revealed a delayed melting of the long-range cycloid spin-order in TbMnO$_3$ following photoexcitation across the fundamental Mott-Hubbard gap. The microscopic mechanism behind this slow transfer of energy from the photoexcited carriers to the spin degrees of freedom is still elusive and not understood. Here, we address this problem by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry, ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Upon photoexcitation, we observe …
The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and loc…
An elusive goal in the field of driven quantum matter is the induction of long-range order. Here, we demonstrate a mechanism based on light-induced evaporative cooling of holes in a correlated electron system. Since the entropy of a filled narrow band grows rapidly with hole doping, the isentropic transfer of holes from a doped Mott insulator to such a band results in a drop of temperature. Strongly correlated Fermi liquids and symmetry-broken states could thus be produced by dipolar excitations. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory, we show that suitably designed chirped pulses al…
We analyze the interplay of antiferromagnetism and pairing in the two dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate repulsive interaction. Coupled charge, magnetic and pairing fluctuations above the energy scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking are treated by a functional renormalization group flow, while the formation of gaps and order below that scale is treated in mean-field theory. The full frequency dependences of interaction vertices and gap functions is taken into account. We compute the magnetic and pairing gap functions as a function of doping $p$ and compare with results from a static ap…
I consider the Hubbard model of graphene in an external magnetic field and in the Hartree-Fock approximation. In the continuum limit, the ground state energy at half filling becomes nearly symmetric under rotations of the three-component vector (N1,N2,m), with the first two components representing the Neel order parameter orthogonal to and the third component the magnetization parallel with the external magnetic field. When the symmetry breaking effects arising from the lattice, Zeeman coupling, and higher Landau levels are included the system develops a quantum critical point at which the ant…
We present a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating magnetic order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The theory is based on a fractionalization of electrons in fermionic chargons and bosonic spinons. The chargons undergo Néel or spiral magnetic order below a density dependent transition temperature $T^*$. Fluctuations of the spin orientation are described by a non-linear sigma model obtained from a gradient expansion of the spinon action. The spin stiffnesses are computed from a renormalization group improved random phase approximation. Our approximations are applicable for a weak or moderate H…
We revisit the unrestricted Hartree Fock study on the evolution of the ground state of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with hole doping. At half-filling, it is known that the ground state of the Hubbard model on triangular lattice develops a 120 degree coplanar order at half-filling in the strong interaction limit, i.e., in the spin 1/2 anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. The ground state property in the doped case is still in controversy even though extensive studies were performed in the past. Within Hartree Fock theory, we find that the 120 degree orde…
We establish a way to handle main collective fluctuations in correlated quantum systems based on a Fluctuation Local Field concept. This technique goes beyond standard mean-field approaches, such as Hartree-Fock and dynamical mean-field theories (DMFT), as it includes a fluctuating classical field that acts on the leading order parameter of the system. Effective model parameters of this new theory are determined from the variational principle, which allows to resolve the Fierz ambiguity in decoupling of the local interaction term. In the saddle-point approximation for the fluctuating field our…
We study the ground-state magnetism of the half-filled Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, where two out of three bonds have hopping $t$ and the third one has $t^\prime$ in a unit triangle. Working in a spin-rotating frame and using the density matrix renormalization group method as an impurity solver, we provide a proper description of incommensurate magnetizations at zero temperature in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). It is shown that the incommensurate spiral magnetic order for $t^\prime/t\gtrsim 0.7$ survives the dynamical fluctuations of itinerant…
We study the dissipative Fermi-Hubbard model in the limit of weak tunneling and strong repulsive interactions, where each lattice site is tunnel-coupled to a Markovian fermionic bath. For cold baths at intermediate chemical potentials, the Mott insulator property remains stable and we find a fast relaxation of the particle number towards half filling. On longer time scales, we find that the anti-ferromagnetic order of the Mott-Néel ground state on bi-partite lattices decays, even at zero temperature. For zero and non-zero temperatures, we quantify the different relaxation time scales by means …
I present a pedagogical survey of a variety of quantum phases of the Hubbard model. The honeycomb lattice model has a conformal field theory connecting the semi-metal to the insulator with Neel order. States with fractionalized excitations are linked to the deconfined phases of gauge theories. I also consider the confining phases of such gauge theories, and show how Berry phases of monopoles induce valence bond solid order. The triangular lattice model can display a metal-insulator transition from a Fermi liquid to a deconfined spin liquid, and I describe the theory of this transition. The bil…
Nematic order resulting from the partial melting of density-waves has been proposed as the mechanism to explain nematicity in iron-based superconductors. An outstanding question, however, is whether the microscopic electronic model for these systems -- the multi-orbital Hubbard model -- displays such an ordered state as its leading instability. In contrast to usual electronic instabilities, such as magnetic and charge order, this fluctuation-driven phenomenon cannot be captured by the standard RPA method. Here, by including fluctuations beyond RPA in the multi-orbital Hubbard model, we derive …
We study the behavior of magnetic superconductors which involve a local attractive interaction between electrons, and a coupling between local moments and the electrons. We solve this `Hubbard-Kondo' model through a variational minimization at zero temperature and validate the results via a Monte Carlo based on static auxiliary field decomposition of the Hubbard interaction. Over a magnetic coupling window that widens with increasing attractive interaction the ground state supports simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order. The pairing amplitude remains s-wave like, without significant s…
We study the phase diagram of a square lattice Hubbard model with a perfect vacancy superstructure. The model can be also defined on a new bipartite lattice with each building blocks consisting of a minimal square. The non-interacting model is exactly solved and a mid-band gap opens at the Fermi energy in the weak inter-block hopping regime. Increasing the Coulomb interaction will develop the Néel antiferromagnetic order with varying block spin moments. The metal-insulator transition with $U_{\rm MI}$ smaller than the one without vacancies occurs above the magnetic instability $U_{\rm M}$. The…
The dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) combined with the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) method, namely FLEX+DMFT, is an approach for correlated electron systems to incorporate both local and non-local long-range correlations in a self-consistent manner. We formulate FLEX+DMFT in a systematic way starting from a Luttinger-Ward functional, and apply it to study the $d$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. The critical temperature ($T_c$) curve obtained in the FLEX+DMFT exhibits a dome structure as a function of the filling, which has not been clearly observed in th…
