We study to which extent SUSY extensions of the Standard Model can describe the excess of events of 3.0 standard deviations observed by ATLAS in the on-Z signal region, respecting constraints by CMS on similar signal channels as well as constraints from searches for jets and E^{miss}_T. GMSB-like scenarios are typically in conflict with these constraints, and do not reproduce well the shape of the E^{miss}_T distribution of the data. An alternative scenario with two massive neutralinos can improve fits to the total number of events as well as to the H_T and E^{miss}_T distributions. Such a scenario can be realised within the NMSSM.
Color-singlet gauge bosons with renormalizable couplings to quarks but not to leptons must interact with additional fermions ("anomalons") required to cancel the gauge anomalies. Analyzing the decays of such leptophobic bosons into anomalons, I show that they produce final states involving leptons at the LHC. Resonant production of a flavor-universal leptophobic $Z'$ boson leads to cascade decays via anomalons, whose signatures include a leptonically decaying $Z$, missing energy and several jets. A $Z'$ boson that couples to the right-handed quarks of the first and second generations undergoes…
The first search for supersymmetry from ATLAS with 70/nb of integrated luminosity extends the Tevatron' s reach for colored particles that decay into jets plus missing transverse energy. For gluinos that decay directly or through a one step cascade into the LSP and two jets, the mass range m_g < 205 GeV is disfavored by the ATLAS searches, regardless of the mass of the LSP. In some cases the coverage extends up to m_g ~ 295 GeV, already surpassing the Tevatron's reach for compressed supersymmetry spectra.
Jets plus missing transverse energy is one of the main search channels for new physics at the LHC. A major limitation lies in our understanding of QCD backgrounds. Using jet merging we can describe the number of jets in typical background channels in terms of a staircase scaling, including theory uncertainties. The scaling parameter depends on the particles in the final state and on cuts applied. Measuring the staircase scaling will allow us to also predict the effective mass for Standard Model backgrounds. Based on both observables we propose an analysis strategy avoiding model specific cuts …
We consider the spin determination of new colored particles in the missing energy plus jets channel at the early stage of LHC. We use a three site moose model to describe the low energy Lagrangian of all same spin partner (LHT or UED like) models and check the gauge invariance of the amplitude. For the benchmark production and decay channel $pp \rightarrow U^{(R)} U^{(R)} \rightarrow u u B_H B_H$, in contrast to those in supersymmetric models, there are spin correlations which affect the polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the quarks from the heavy partner $U^{(R)}$ decay. We show such …
We show that the signature of two boosted $W$-jets plus large missing energy is very promising to probe heavy charged resonances ($X^\pm$) through the process of $pp\to X^+X^-\to W^+W^- X^0 X^0$ where $X^0$ denotes dark matter candidate. The hadronic decay mode of the $W$ boson is considered to maximize the number of signal events. When the mass split between $X^\pm$ and $X^0$ is large, one has to utilize the jet-substructure technique to analyze the boosted $W$-jet. For illustration we consider the process of chargino pair production at the LHC, i.e., $pp\to χ_1^+χ^-_1 \to W^+W^-χ_1^0χ_1^0$, …
Final states with leptons, jets and missing transverse energy are a promising way to detect Supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider. Results of simulation studies performed by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations are presented. The discovery of new physics is shown to be possible within the first fb^-1 of collected integrated luminosity.
The mono-jet search, looking for events involving missing transverse energy (MET) plus one or two jets, is the most prominent collider dark matter search. We show that multi-jet searches, which look for MET plus two or more jets, are significantly more sensitive than the mono-jet search for pseudoscalar- and scalar-mediated interactions. We demonstrate this in the context of a simplified model with a pseudoscalar interaction that explains the excess in GeV energy gamma rays observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We show that multi-jet searches already constrain a pseudoscalar interpretati…
This work explores the potential reach of the 7 TeV LHC to new colored states in the context of simplified models and addresses the issue of which search regions are necessary to cover an extensive set of event topologies and kinematic regimes. This article demonstrates that if searches are designed to focus on specific regions of phase space, then new physics may be missed if it lies in unexpected corners. Simple multiregion search strategies can be designed to cover all of kinematic possibilities. A set of benchmark models are created that cover the qualitatively different signatures and a b…
A possible explanation of the excesses observed by ATLAS in the Z+jets+MET channel within the p(henomenological)MSSM is discussed. We have found that the cascade of first/second generation squarks to binos to Higgsino LSPs, with judiciously chosen sparticle masses, can provide a viable scenario that is consistent with all other experimental constraints.
Recent ATLAS data significantly extend the exclusion limits for supersymmetric particles. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. We calculate the likelihood map of the ATLAS search, taking into account systematic errors on the signal and on the background. We validate our calculation against the ATLAS determinaton of 95% confidence level exclusion contours. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by the likelihood map, which takes a bite at the high probability density region …
Searches for new physics in high-multiplicity events with little or no missing energy are an important component of the LHC program, complementary to analyses that rely on missing energy. We consider the potential reach of searches for events with a lepton and six or more jets, and show they can provide increased sensitivity to many supersymmetric and exotic models that would not be detected through standard missing-energy analyses. Among these are supersymmetric models with gauge mediation, R-parity violation, and light hidden sectors. Moreover, ATLAS and CMS measurements suggest the primary …
We examine the LEP limits for the $Zh\to Z+b$'s final state and find that the excess of observed events for $\mh\sim 100\gev$ correlates well with there being an $\mh\sim 100\gev$ Higgs boson with SM-like $ZZh$ coupling that decays partly via $h\to b\anti b+\tauptaum$ [with $\br(h\to b\anti b)\sim 0.08$] but dominantly via $h\to aa$ [with $\br(h\to aa)\sim 0.9$], where $\ma<2\mb$ so that $a\to \tauptaum$ (or light quarks and gluons) decays are dominant. Scenarios of precisely this type arise in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model for parameter choices yielding the lowest possible fine-tun…
We propose a new method to discover light top squarks (stops) in the co-annihilation region at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The bino-like neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and the lighter stop is the next-to-LSP. Such scenarios can be consistent with electroweak baryogenesis and also with dark matter constraints. We consider the production of two stops in association with two b-quarks, including pure QCD as well as mixed electroweak-QCD contributions. The stops decay into a charm quark and the LSP. For a higgsino-like light chargino the electroweak contributions can …
Simplified Models are a useful way to characterize new physics scenarios for the LHC. Particle decays are often represented using non-renormalizable operators that involve the minimal number of fields required by symmetries. Generalizing to a wider class of decay operators allows one to model a variety of final states. This approach, which we dub the $n$-body extension of Simplified Models, provides a unifying treatment of the signal phase space resulting from a variety of signals. In this paper, we present the first application of this framework in the context of multijet plus missing energy …
n this letter we investigate the various processes that can contribute to a final state consisting of a lepton, missing transverse momentum and two jets at Next to Leading Order (NLO) at the Tevatron. In particular we consider the production of W/Z + 2 jets, diboson pairs, single top and the tt process with both fully leptonic and semi-leptonic decays. We present distributions for the invariant mass of the dijet system and normalisations of the various processes, accurate to NLO.
We reemphasise the usefulness of angular correlations in LHC searches for missing transverse energy ($E_T^{\mathrm{miss}}$) signatures that involve jet $(j)$ pairs with large invariant mass. For the case of mono-jet production via gluon-fusion, we develop a realistic analysis strategy that allows to split the dark matter (DM) signal into distinct one jet-like and two jet-like event samples. By performing state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations of both the mono-jet signature and the standard model background, it is shown that the dijet azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ_{j_1 j_2}$ in $2 j +E_T^{\m…
The CMS Collaboration has recently reported some excess events in final states with electrons and jets, in searches for leptoquarks and $W'$ bosons. Although these excesses may be due to some yet-to-be-understood background mismodeling, it is useful to seek realistic interpretations involving new particles that could generate such events. We show that resonant pair production of vector-like leptons that decay to an electron and two jets leads to kinematic distributions consistent with the CMS data.
CDF recently reported an excess of events in the mu-gamma-missing E_T channel that disagrees with the Standard Model prediction. No such excess was observed in the e-gamma-mett channel. We explain the excess via resonant smuon production with a single dominant R-parity violating coupling lambda'_{211}, in the context of models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The slepton decays to the lightest neutralino and a muon followed by neutralino decaying to a gravitino and photon. We determine a viable region of parameter space that fits the kinematical distributions of the…
Recent CMS data significantly extend the direct search exclusion for supersymmetry. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. By simulating supersymmetric signal events at the LHC, we construct a likelihood map for the recent CMS data, validating it against the exclusion region calculated by the experiment itself. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by our likelihood map. The CMS results nibble away at the high fit probability density region, transforming probability distribu…
We present a proposal for performing model-independent jets plus missing energy searches. Currently, these searches are optimized for mSUGRA and are consequently not sensitive to all kinematically-accessible regions of parameter space. We show that the reach of these searches can be broadened by setting limits on the differential cross section as a function of the total visible energy and the missing energy. These measurements only require knowledge of the relevant Standard Model backgrounds and can be subsequently used to limit any theoretical model of new physics. We apply this approach to a…
A recently proposed class of supersymmetric models predicts rather light and nearly mass-degenerate higgsinos, while the other superparticles are significantly heavier. In this paper we study the early LHC phenomenology of a benchmark model of this kind. If the squarks and gluinos, and in particular the lighter stop, are still light enough to be within reach, then evidence for our model can be found in hadronic SUSY searches. Moreover, with dedicated searches it will be possible to distinguish the light higgsino model from generic SUSY models with a bino LSP. Search channels with b-jets and wi…
In this paper we describe a novel, model-independent technique of "rectangular aggregations" for mining the LHC data for hints of new physics. A typical (CMS) search now has hundreds of signal regions, which can obscure potentially interesting anomalies. Applying our technique to the two CMS jets+MET SUSY searches, we identify a set of previously overlooked $\sim 3σ$ excesses. Among these, four excesses survive tests of inter- and intra-search compatibility, and two are especially interesting: they are largely overlapping between the jets+MET searches and are characterized by low jet multiplic…
A feasibility study is presented for the search of the lightest bottom squark (sbottom) in a compressed scenario, where its mass difference from the lightest neutralino is 5 GeV. Two separate studies are performed: $(1)$ final state containing two VBF-like tagging jets, missing transverse energy, and zero or one $b$-tagged jet; and $(2)$ final state consisting of initial state radiation (ISR) jet, missing transverse energy, and at least one $b$-tagged jet. An analysis of the shape of the missing transverse energy distribution for signal and background is performed in each case, leading to sign…
We study Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton production in the large extra dimensions model via 2 jets plus missing transverse momentum signatures at the LHC. We make predictions for both the signal and the dominant Zjj and Wjj backgrounds, where we introduce missing P_T-dependent jet selection cuts that ensure the smallness of the 2-jet rate over the 1-jet rate. With the same jet selection cuts, the distributions of the two jets and their correlation with the missing transverse momentum provide additional evidence for the production of an invisible massive object.
In a recent work, we emphasized that an excess in tri-lepton events plus missing energy observed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC could be interpreted as a signal of low energy supersymmetry. In such a scenario the lightest neutralino mass is approximately $m_χ\simeq 60$ GeV and the direct Dark Matter detection cross section is naturally below the current bound. In this work we present simple extensions of this scenario that lead to an explanation of the gamma ray excess at the center of the galaxy observed by Fermi-LAT, as well as the anti-proton excess observed by AMS-02. These extensions …
The LEP centre of mass energy has been increased since 1996 in the aim of producing the Higgs boson. The SM Higgs boson search has been pursued in the four LEP collaborations exploiting final states with higher branching ratios. In the following we discuss the search in final states with two jets and missing energy or charged leptons.
The ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) may discover the squarks (\tilde{q}) and gluino (\tilde{g}) of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) in the early stage of the experiments if their masses are lighter than 1.5 TeV. In this paper we propose the sub-system m_{T2} variable, which is sensitive to the gluino mass when m_{\tilde{q}}>m_{\tilde{g}}. Using it with the inclusive m_{T2} distribution proposed earlier, \tilde{q} and \tilde{g} masses can be determined simultaneously in the early stage of the experiments. Results of Monte Carlo simulations at sample …
We study an interesting region of phase space at the LHC for pair-produced stops decaying into hadronic top quarks and light neutralinos. After imposing a sizeable cut on the missing transverse energy, which is the key variable for reducing backgrounds, we have found that the two hadronic tops are likely to merge into a single fat jet. We develop a jet-substructure-based strategy to tag the two merged top-jets and utilize the MT2 variable to further reduce the backgrounds. We obtain about a 50% increase to the ratio of the signal over background and a mild increase on the signal discovery sign…
In previous work, we identified an anomalous number of events in the LHC jets+MET searches characterized by low jet multiplicity and low-to-moderate transverse energy variables. Here, we update this analysis with results from a new ATLAS search in the monojet channel which also shows a consistent excess. As before, we find that this "monojet excess" is well-described by the resonant production of a heavy colored state decaying to a quark and a massive invisible particle. In the combined ATLAS and CMS data, we now find a local (global) preference of 3.3$σ$ (2.5$σ$) for the new physics model ove…
Traditional searches for SUSY at hadron colliders rely heavily on the presence of large missing transverse energy (ME_T) to reject background compared to signal. On the other hand, initial searches for new physics at the LHC may not be able to rely on ME_T due to a variety of detector calibration issues. We show that much of SUSY parameter space is accessible to discovery even {\it without} using ME_T, and with rather low integrated luminosities 0.1-1 fb^{-1}. A key role is played by isolated lepton multiplicity which arises from gluino and squark cascade decays. Requiring \ge 3 isolated lepto…
The collider phenomenology of models with Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) is surprisingly similar to that of supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios. For each level-1 bosonic (fermionic) Kaluza-Klein (KK) state, there is a fermionic (bosonic) analog in SUSY and thus UED scenarios are often known as bosonic supersymmetry. The minimal version of UED (mUED) gives rise to a quasi-degenerate particle spectrum at each KK-level and thus, can not explain the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate hinted by the ATLAS collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. However, in the non-minimal versi…
We show that superstring inspired $E_6$ models can explain both the recently detected excess $eejj$ and $e\ \rm{missing}\ p_T \ jj$ signals at CMS, and also allow for leptogenesis. Working in a R-parity conserving low energy supersymmetric effective model, we show that the excess CMS events can be produced via the decay of exotic sleptons in Alternative Left-Right Symmetric Model of $E_6$, which can also accommodate leptogenesis at a high scale. On the other hand, either the $eejj$ excess or the $e\ \rm{missing}\ p_T \ jj$ excess can be produced via the decays of right handed gauge bosons, but…
The prediction of backgrounds to new physics signals in topologies with large missing transverse energy and jets is important to new physics searches at the LHC. Following a CMS study, we investigate theoretical issues in using measurements of gamma + 2-jet production to predict the irreducible background to searches for missing energy plus two jets that originates from Z + 2-jet production where the Z boson decays to neutrinos. We compute ratios of gamma + 2-jet to Z + 2-jet production cross sections and kinematic distributions at next-to-leading order in alpha_s, as well as using a parton sh…
The CDF experiment reported a lepton photon missing transverse energy (E_T) signal 3 sigma in excess of the Standard Model prediction in Tevatron Run I data. The excess can be explained by the resonant production of a smuon, which subsequently decays to a muon, a photon and a gravitino. Here, we perform combined fits of this model to the CDF gamma lepton missing E_T excess, the D0 measurement of the same channel and the CDF photon missing E_T channel. Although the rates of the latter two analyses are in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, our model is in good agreement with these dat…
We argue that dark matter particles which have strong interactions with the Standard Model particles are not excluded by current astrophysical constraints. These dark matter particles have unique signatures at colliders; instead of missing energy, the dark matter particles produce jets. We propose a new search strategy for such strongly interacting particles by looking for a signal of two trackless jets. We show that suitable cuts can plausibly allow us to find these signals at the LHC even in early data.
We examine the prospects for testing SO(10) Yukawa-unified supersymmetric models during the first year of LHC running at \sqrt{s}= 7 TeV, assuming integrated luminosity values of 0.1 to 1 fb^-1. We consider two cases: the Higgs splitting (HS) and the D-term splitting (DR3) models. Each generically predicts light gluinos and heavy squarks, with an inverted scalar mass hierarchy. We hence expect large rates for gluino pair production followed by decays to final states with large b-jet multiplicity. For 0.2 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity, we find a 5 sigma discovery reach of m(gluino) ~ 400 GeV e…

The production of dark matter particles from confining dark sectors may lead to many novel experimental signatures. Depending on the details of the theory, dark quark production in proton-proton collisions could result in semivisible jets of particles: collimated sprays of dark hadrons of which only some are detectable by particle collider experiments. The experimental signature is characterised by the presence of reconstructed missing momentum collinear with the visible components of the jets. This complex topology is sensitive to detector inefficiencies and mis-reconstruction that generate a…
We extend our investigation of backgrounds to new physics signals, following CMS's data-driven search for supersymmetry at the LHC. The aim is to use different sets of cuts in gamma + 3-jet production to predict the irreducible Z + 3-jet background (with the Z boson decaying to neutrinos) to searches with missing transverse energy + 3-jet signal topologies. We compute ratios of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet production cross sections and kinematic distributions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s. We compare these ratios with those obtained using a parton shower matched to leading-order matr…

The recently found excess of high E$_T$ jets over current QCD predictions is attributed to gluon radiation at double scattering process inside a nucleon. The order of magnitude estimate of the cross section fits experimental findings rather well. The specific features of the process are discussed. Various similar hadronic effects related to the short radiation length are described.
Using the full statistics of the DELPHI experiment at $\sqrt{s}=91 GeV$ 3-jet events are selected and gluon respectively quark jet enriched subsamples are defined. The leading systems of the two kinds of jets are determined using rapidity gaps. The sum of charges of the leading systems is studied. It is found that for gluon-jets there is a significant excess of leading systems with total charge zero when compared to Monte Carlo simulations with JETSET. The corresponding leading systems of quark-jets do not exhibit such an excess. The mass spectra of the leading systems with total charge zero a…
In scenarios with relatively light down squarks, motivated, e.g., by SO(10) D terms, jets + missing $E_T$ signals can be observed at the luminosity upgraded Tevatron even if the squarks are much heavier than the gluinos and the common gaugino mass ($M_{1/2}$) at $M_G$ lies above the LEP allowed lower bound. In the conventional mSUGRA model with heavy squarks practically no signal is expected in this channel. The possiblity of distinguishing between various SUGRA motivated scenarios by exploiting the missing $E_T$ and jet $p_T$ distributions, opposite sign dileptons + jets + missing $E_T$ event…
The increasing statistics of the high-energy neutrino flux observed by the IceCube Observatory points towards an excess of events above the atmospheric neutrino background in the 30--400 TeV energy range. Such an excess is compatible with the findings of the ANTARES Telescope and it would naturally imply the possibility that more than one source class contributes to the observed flux. Electromagnetically hidden sources have been invoked to interpret this excess of events at low energies. By adopting a unified model for the electromagnetically bright and choked gamma-ray bursts and taking into …
