In order to improve the precision of domain wall dynamics measurements, we develop a coplanar waveguide-based setup where the domain wall motion should be triggered by pulses of magnetic field. The latter are produced by the Oersted field of the waveguide as a current pulse travels toward its termination, where it is dissipated. Our objective is to eliminate a source of bias in domain wall speed estimation while optimizing the field amplitude. Here, we present implementations of this concept for magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and synchrotron-based investigation.
To investigate cylindrical ultrathin copper nanowires, we performed atomistic simulations using the steepest descent method. The stable structures of the cylindrical ultrathin copper nanowires were multi-shell packs composed of coaxial cylindrical shells with {111}-like surfaces. Semiclassical orbits in a circle and circular rolling of a triangular network could explain the structures of the cylindrical ultrathin multi-shell copper nanowires. A calculation of the angular correlation function and the radial distribution function for nanowires showed that the structural properties of nanowires b…
We have simulated the tensile testing of cylindrical multi-shell Cu nanowire. Elongated cylindrical multi-shell Cu nanowire was transformed into a pentagonal structure. Pentagonal nanowires are composed of a central atomic strand and pentagonal tubes made of five-times-folded <110>{100} sheets.
We report several procedures for the robust nucleation of magnetic domain walls in cylindrical permalloy nanowires. Specific features of the magnetic force microscopy contrast of such soft wires are discussed, with a view to avoid the misinterpretation of the magnetization states. The domain walls could be moved under quasistatic magnetic fields in the range 0.1--10 mT.
The spin wave modes of cylindrical nanowires of moderate diameter-to-length ratio are investigated in this article. Based on three dimensional simulations and analytical calculations we determine the spatial structure of the modes. We show that standing spin waves and localized edge modes form the discrete spectrum of the nanowires. Using a simple analytical model we infer an extended dispersion relation for spin waves in cylinders. Considering the variation of the demagnetizing (internal) field we show that the localized dipole-exchange modes at the edges are always present.
We probe magnetic domain walls in cylindrical soft magnetic nanowires using electron holography. We detail the modelling of expected contrast for both transverse and Bloch point domain walls and provide comparison with experimental observations performed on NiCo nanowires, involving also both magnetic and electrostatic contribution to the electron holography map. This allows the fast determination of the domain wall type without the need for uneasy and time-consuming experimental removal of the electrostatic contribution. Finally, we describe and implement a new efficient algorithm for calcula…
We present experimental evidence of metastable magnetic domains in cylindrical CoNi nanowires. Transverse (perpendicular) domains have been previously observed only in flat nanostrips. Here they are found together with more conventional vortex domains along the same cylindrical nanowire, denoting a bistable system with similar free energies. The surface and the inner magnetization distribution in both types of domains are analyzed by Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) contrast, and hysteresis loop in individual nanowires are measured by Magn…
Topological protection is an elegant way of warranting the integrity of quantum and nanosized systems. In magnetism one example is the Bloch-point, a peculiar object implying the local vanishing of magnetization within a ferromagnet. Its existence had been postulated and described theoretically since several decades, however it has never been observed. We con rm experimentally the existence of Bloch points, imaged within domain walls in cylindrical magnetic nanowires, combining surface and transmission XMCD-PEEM magnetic microscopy. This opens the way to the experimental search for peculiar ph…
The thermal stability and melting behavior of ultrathin titanium nanowires with multi-shell cylindrical structures are studied using molecular dynamic simulation. The melting temperatures of titanium nanowires show remarkable dependence on wire sizes and structures. For the nanowire thinner than 1.2 nm, there is no clear characteristic of first-order phase transition during the melting, implying a coexistence of solid and liquid phases due to finite size effect. An interesting structural transformation from helical multi-shell cylindrical to bulk-like rectangular is observed in the melting pro…
Antireflection with broadband and wide angle properties is important for a wide range of applications on photovoltaic cells and display. The SiOx shell layer provides a natural antireflection from air to the Si core absorption layer. In this work, we have demonstrated the random core-shell silicon nanowires with both broadband (from 400nm to 900nm) and wide angle (from normal incidence to 60\degree) antireflection characteristics within AM1.5 solar spectrum. The graded index structure from the randomly oriented core-shell (Air/SiOx/Si) nanowires may provide a potential avenue to realize a broa…
The future developments of three-dimensional magnetic nanotechnology require the control of domain wall dynamics by means of current pulses. While this has been extensively studied in planar magnetic strips (planar nanowires), few reports exist in cylindrical geometry, where Bloch point domain walls are expected to have intriguing properties. Here we report this investigation in cylindrical magnetic Ni nanowires with geometrical notches. Experimental work based on synchrotron X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) combined with photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) indicates that large cu…
We show that a metamaterial consisting of aligned metallic nanowires in a dielectric matrix has strongly anisotropic optical properties. For filling ratio f<1/2, the composite medium shows two surface plasmon resonances (SPRs): the transverse and longitudinal SPR with wavelengths lambda_t<lambda_l. For lambda>lambda_l, the longitudinal SPR, the material exhibits Re epsilon_l<0, Re epsilon_t>0, relative to the nanowires axis, enabling the achievement of broadband all-angle negative refraction and superlens imaging. An imaging theory of superlens made of these media is established. High performa…
We investigate current-driven domain wall (DW) propagation in magnetic nanowires in the framework of the modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with both adiabatic and nonadiabatic spin torque (NAST) terms. Contrary to the common opinion that NAST is indispensable for DW motion[1,2], we point out that adiabatic spin torque (AST) only is enough for current-driven DW motion in a cylindrical (uniaxial) nanowire. Apart from a discussion of the rigid DW motion from the energy and angular momentum viewpoint, we also propose an experimental scheme to measure the spin current polarization by combin…
Cylindrical nanowires made of soft magnetic materials, in contrast to thin strips, may host domain walls of two distinct topologies. Unexpectedly, we evidence experimentally the dynamic transformation of topology upon wall motion above a field threshold. Micromagnetic simulations highlight the underlying precessional dynamics for one way of the transformation, involving the nucleation of a Bloch-point singularity, however, fail to reproduce the reverse process. This rare discrepancy between micromagnetic simulations and experiments raises fascinating questions in material and computer science.
Recent studies have predicted extraordinary properties for transverse domain walls in cylindrical nanowires: zero depinning current, the absence of the Walker breakdown, and applications as domain wall oscillators. In order to reliably control the domain wall motion, it is important to understand how they interact with energy barriers. In this paper, we study the motion and depinning of transverse domain walls through potential barriers in ferromagnetic cylindrical nanowires. We use magnetic fields and spin-polarized currents to drive the domain walls along the wire. Using magnetic fields, we …
We integrate about 100 single Cadmium Selenide semiconductor nanowires in self-standing Silicon Nitride photonic crystal cavities in a single processing run. Room temperature measurements reveal a single narrow emission linewidth, corresponding to a Q-factor as large as 5000. By varying the structural parameters of the photonic crystal, the peak wavelength is tuned, thereby covering the entire emission spectral range of the active material. A very large spectral range could be covered by heterogeneous integration of different active materials.
Interactions between pairs of magnetic domain walls (DW) and pinning by radial constrictions were studied in cylindrical nanowires with surface roughness. It was found that a radial constriction creates a symmetric pinning potential well, with a change of slope when the DW is situated outside the notch. Surface deformation induces an asymmetry in the pinning potential as well as dynamical pinning. The depinning fields of the domain walls were found generally to decrease with increasing surface roughness. A DW pinned at a radial constriction creates a pinning potential well for a free DW in a p…
A next-generation memory device utilizing a three-dimensional nanowire system requires the reliable control of domain wall motion. In this letter, domain walls are studied in cylindrical nanowires consisting of alternating segments of cobalt and nickel. The material interfaces acting as domain wall pinning sites, are utilized in combination with current pulses, to control the position of the domain wall, which is monitored using magnetoresistance measurements. Magnetic force microscopy results further confirm the occurrence of current assisted domain wall depinning. Data bits are therefore shi…
One-dimensional (1D) sub-bands in cylindrical InAs nanowires (NWs) are electrically mapped as a function of NW diameter in the range of 15-35 nm. At low temperatures, stepwise current increases with the gate voltage are clearly observed and attributed to the electron transport through individual 1D sub-bands. The two-fold degeneracy in certain sub-band energies predicted by simulation due to structural symmetry is experimentally observed for the first time. The experimentally obtained sub-band energies match the simulated results, shedding light on both the energies of the sub-bands as well as…
In this paper we compute and compare the surface energy of various Ga liquid droplets wetting a cylindrical cavity in various configurations. While for some of these configurations the surface energy can be computed explicitely for others numerical computation is needed. Motivated by the results obtained for the cylindrical cavities we explore the case of the more realistic situation, conical cavities. Our results provide a relation between the geometry of the conical cavity and the equilibirum wetting angles of the droplet on the bottom and on the sidewall of the cavity which insure the dewet…
A cylindrical magnetic nanowire system composed of ferromagnetic core and shell layers has been investigated by using effective field theory with correlations. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings at the core-shell interface have been considered. Main attention has been focused on the effects of the quenched disordered shell bonds, as well as interface bonds on the magnetic properties of the system. A complete picture of the phase diagrams and magnetization profiles has been represented. It has been shown that for the antiferromagnetic nanowire system, the magnetization …
Metallic nanowires (NW) coated with a high permittivity dielectric are proposed as means to strongly reduce the light scattering of the conducting NW, rendering them transparent at infrared wavelengths of interest in telecommunications. Based on a simple, universal law derived from electrostatics arguments, we find appropriate parameters to reduce the scattering efficiency of hybrid metal-dielectric NW by up to three orders of magnitude as compared with the scattering efficiency of the homogeneous metallic NW. We show that metal@dielectric structures are much more robust against fabrication im…
Speed and reliability of magnetic domain wall (DW) motion are key parameters that must be controlled to realize the full potential of DW-based magnetic devices for logic and memory applications. A major hindrance to this is extrinsic DW pinning at specific sites related to shape and material defects, which may be present even if the sample synthesis is well controlled. Understanding the origin of DW pinning and reducing it is especially desirable in electrochemically-deposited cylindrical magnetic nanowires (NWs), for which measurements of the fascinating physics predicted by theoretical compu…
Ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shape and their nanocomposites are actively studied in modern physics. Because of their applications in many fields of nanotechnology, the size effects and the possible disappearance of ferroelectricity at a critical particle volume attract a growing scientific interest. In this paper we study the size effects of the cylindrical nanoparticle phase diagrams allowing for effective surface tension and depolarization field influence. The Euler-Lagrange equations were solved by direct variational method. The approximate analytical expression for the paraelec…
We present a Monte Carlo study of the magnetic properties of thin cylindrical nanowires composed of a ferromagnetic core and an antiferromagnetic shell implementing a classical spin Hamiltonian. We address systematically the impact of interface exchange coupling on the loop characteristics and the magnetization reversal mechanism. We study the effect of shell polycrystallinity on the characteristic fields of the isothermal hysteresis loop (coercivity, exchange-bias). We demonstrate that coupling to a polycrystalline antiferromagnetic shell increases the critical core diameter for transition fr…
We report a simple theoretical derivation of the spectrum and damping of spin waves in a cylindrical periodically structured magnetic nanowire (cylindrical magnonic crystal) in the "effective medium" approximation. The dependence of the "effective" magnetic parameters upon the individual layer parameters is shown to be different from the arithmetic average over the volume of the superlattice. The formulae that are obtained can be applied firstly in the description of spin wave dispersion in the first allowed band of the structure; and secondly in the design of a magnonic crystal with band-gaps…
We present a theoretical analysis of Dirac magneto-plasmons in topological insulator nanowires. We discuss a cylindrical geometry where Berry phase effects induce the opening of a gap at the neutrality point. By taking into account surface electron wave functions introduced in previous papers and within the random phase approximation, we provide an analytical form of the dynamic structure factor. Dispersions and spectral weights of Dirac plasmons are studied with varying the radius of the cylinder, the surface doping, and the strength of an external magnetic field. We show that, at zero surfac…
A novel method for measuring the surface coverage of randomly distributed cylindrical nanoparticles such as nanorods and nanowires, using atomic force microscopy (AFM), is presented. The method offers several advantages over existing techniques such as particle beam and x-ray diffraction spectroscopy. These include, subnanometer vertical and lateral resolution, non destructive interaction with the sample surface allowing repeated measurements, user-friendly setup and ambient operating conditions. The method relies on the use of a statistical model to describe the variations of the nanoparticle…
The interaction between a spin polarized dc electrical current and spin wave modes of a cylindrical nanowire is investigated in this report. We found that close to the critical current, the uniform mode is suppressed, while the edge mode starts to propagate into the sample. When the current exceeds the critical value, this phenomenon is even more accentuated. The edge mode becomes the uniform mode of the nanowire. The higher spin wave modes are slowly pushed away by the current until the propagating mode remains.
We predict that ferroelectric phase can be induced by the strong intrinsic surface stress inevitably present under the curved surface in the high aspect ratio cylindrical nanoparticles of nonferroelectric binary oxides (BaO, EuO, MgO, etc). We calculated the sizes and temperature range of the ferroelectric phase in BaO nanowires. The analytical calculations were performed within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory with phenomenological parameters extracted from the first principle calculations [E. Bousquet et al, Strain-induced ferroelectricity in simple rocksalt binary oxides. arXiv:0906.4235v1…
In the process of molecular dynamics simulation studies of gold nanowires an interesting structure is discovered. This is a finite double-wall nanowire with a large empty core similar to single-wall and double-wall carbon nanotubes. The structure of the 16-10 gold nanotube is studied at the room temperature. An investigation of the high-temperature stability has also been carried out. An unusual inward evaporation of atoms from cylindrical liquid walls is found at T>= 1200 K.
We study the formation and control of metastable states of pairs of domain walls in cylindrical nanowires of small diameter where the transverse walls are the lower energy state. We show that these pairs form bound states under certain conditions, with a lifetime as long as 200ns, and are stabilized by the influence of a spin polarized current. Their stability is analyzed with a model based on the magnetostatic interaction and by 3D micromagnetic simulations. The apparition of bound states could hinder the operation of devices.
We study the magnetic properties of cylindrical ferromagnetic core - antiferromagnetic shell nanowires using Monte Carlo simulations and a classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian in order to elucidate the impact of the oxidized shell on the magnetic properties and the magnetization reversal mechanism. We find that the coupling to the antiferromagnetic shell leads to suppression of the coercivity and emergence of a weak exchange bias effect. Comparison of the magnetization reversal mechanism in the bare and the surface-oxidized nanowire reveals that the domain wall propagation and annihilation remains…
The interaction between transverse magnetic domain walls (TDWs) in planar (2D) and cylindrical (3D) nanowires is examined using micromagnetic simulations. We show that in perfect and surface deformed wires the free TDWs behave differently, as the 3D TDWs combine into metastable states with average lifetimes of 300ns depending on roughness, while the 2D TDWs do not due to 2D shape anisotropy. When the 2D and 3D TDWs are pinned at artificial constrictions, they behave similarly as they interact mainly through the dipolar field. This magnetostatic interaction is well described by the point charge…
We probe the electron transport properties in the shell of GaAs/In0.2Ga0.8As core/shell nanowires at high electric fields using optical pump / THz probe spectroscopy with broadband THz pulses and peak electric fields up to 0.6 MV/cm. The plasmon resonance of the photoexcited charge carriers exhibits a systematic redshift and a suppression of its spectral weight for THz driving fields exceeding 0.4 MV/cm. This behavior is attributed to the intervalley electron scattering resulting in the increase of the average electron effective mass and the corresponding decrease of the electron mobility by a…
Stimulated by the recent realization of three dimensional topological insulator nanowire interfer- ometers, a theoretical analysis of quantum interference effects on the low energy spectrum of Bi2Se3 nanowires is presented. The electronic properties are analyzed in nanowires with circular, square and rectangular cross-sections starting from a continuum three dimensional model with particular emphasis on magnetic and geometrical effects. The theoretical study is based on numerically exact diagonalizations of the discretized model for all the geometries. In the case of the cylindrical wire, an a…
Cylindrical magnetic nanowires with large transversal magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been shown to sustain non-trivial magnetic configurations resulting from the interplay of spatial confinement, exchange, and anisotropies. Exploiting these peculiar 3D spin configurations and their solitonic inhomogeneities are prospected to improve magnetization switching in future spintronics, such as power-saving magnetic memory and logic applications. Here we employ holographic vector field electron tomography to reconstruct the remanent magnetic states in CoNi nanowires with 10 nm resolution in 3D, wi…
