Spatially varying strained graphene can acquire interesting electronic properties because of the strain-induced valley-dependent gauge (pseudomagnetic) fields1,2. Here we report the realization of strained graphene regions located close to the step edges of Cu(111), obtained by using thermal strain engineering3,4. We study these strained structures with sub-nanometre-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy and identify their spatially modulated Dirac points, demonstrating the effect of overlap of Cu and graphene wave functions on the charge transfer between them5. By applying a magnetic field of 8 Tesla, electron confinement, as revealed by regularly spaced sharp resonances6,7, is observed in the strained graphene. In some regions of the strained graphene, repetitive pairs of resonance peaks appear in the tunnelling spectra. This provides direct and compelling evidence for lifting of valley degeneracy due to the coexistence of both the magnetic field and the pseudomagnetic field.
It is quite easy to control spin polarization and spin direction of a system via magnetic fields. However, there is no such a direct and efficient way to manipulate valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to realize valley polarization and valley inversion in graphene by using both strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields. The pseudomagnetic fields, which are quite different from real magnetic fields, pointing in opposite directions at the two distinct valleys of graphene. Therefore, coexistence of the pseudomagnetic fie…
We examine the full static non-linear optical response of uniaxially strained transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers doped with a finite carrier density in the conduction band, in the presence of disorder. We find that the customary shift current is suppressed, yet we identify a strong, valley-dependent non-reciprocal response, which we term a \textit{unidirectional valley-contrasting photo-current} (UVCP). This DC current originates from the combined effect of strain and Kramers symmetry breaking by trigonal warping, while the contributions due to individual valleys can be separated by in…
The paper presents a theoretical description of the effects of strain induced by out-of-plane deformations on charge distributions and transport on graphene. A review of a continuum model for electrons using the Dirac formalism is complemented with elasticity theory to represent strain fields. The resulting model is cast in terms of scalar and pseudo-magnetic fields that control electron dynamics. Two distinct geometries, a bubble, and a fold are chosen to represent the most commonly observed deformations in experimental settings. It is shown that local charge accumulation regions appear in de…
A caloritronic device setup is proposed that harnesses the intrinsic spin-valley locking of two-dimensional honeycomb lattices with graphene-like valleys, for instance, silicene and stanene. Combining first-principles and analytic calculations, we quantitatively show that when sheets of such materials are placed on a ferromagnetic substrate and held between two contacts at different temperatures, an interplay between the electron degrees-of-freedom of charge, spin, and valley arises. A manifestation of this interplay are finite charge, spin, and valley currents. Uniaxial strain that adjusts th…
With the both spin and valley degrees of freedom, the low-lying excitonic spectra of photo-excited transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMDC-MLs) are featured by rich fine structures, comprising the intra-valley bright exciton states as well as various intra- and inter-valley dark ones. The latter states can be classified as those of the spin- and momentum-forbidden dark excitons according to the violated optical selection rules. Because of the optical invisibility, the two types of the dark states are in general hardly observed and even distinguished in conventional spectroscopies alth…
The long-wavelength physics of monolayer graphene in the presence of periodic strain fields has a natural chiral scattering network description. When the strain field varies slowly compared to the graphene lattice and the effective magnetic length of the induced valley pseudomagnetic field, the low-energy physics can be understood in terms of valley-polarized percolating domain-wall modes. Inspired by a recent experiment, we consider a strain field with threefold rotation and mirror symmetries but without twofold rotation symmetry, resulting in a system with the connectivity of the oriented ka…
Gate-induced superconductivity at the surface of nanolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, thanks to the sizeable transition temperature, robustness against in-plane magnetic fields beyond the Pauli limit, and hints to a non-conventional nature of the pairing. A key information necessary to unveil its microscopic origin is the geometry of the Fermi surface hosting the Cooper pairs as a function of field-effect doping, which is dictated by the filling of the inequivalent valleys at the K/K$^{\prime}$ and Q/Q$^{\prime}$…
We extend the previous 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model effectively employed for relaxed Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy to the case of strained Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy. The strain-relevant parameters for the 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model are obtained by using linear interpolation between the values of single crystal of Ge and Sn that are from literatures and optimizations. We specially investigate the dependence of band-gap at $L$-valley and $Γ$-valley with different Sn composition under uniaxial and biaxial strain along [100], [110] and [111] directions. The good agreement between our theoretical predict…
We consider states bound at the flip of the electric field in buckled silicene. Along the electric flip lines a topological confinement is formed with the orientation of the charge current and the resulting magnetic dipole moment determined by the valley index. We compare the topological confinement to the trivial one that is due to a local reduction of the vertical electric field but without energy gap inversion. For the latter the valley does not protect the orientation of the magnetic dipole moment from inversion by external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the topologically confined sta…
The spin and valley polarizations and plasmonics in Van der Waals heterostructures of strained graphene monolayer on 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (GrTMD) substrate are reported in this communication. The substrate induced interactions (SII) involve sub-lattice-resolved, and enhanced intrinsic spin-orbit couplings, the extrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), and the orbital gap related to the transfer of the electronic charge from graphene to the substrate. Furthermore, magnetic impurity atoms are deposited to the graphene surface and the corresponding exchange field is included in t…
In monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides the nonlocal nature of the effective dielectric screening leads to large binding energies of excitons. Additional lateral confinement gives rise to exciton localization in quantum dots. By assuming parabolic confinement for both the electron and the hole, we derive model wave functions for the relative and the center-of-mass motions of electron-hole pairs, and investigate theoretically resonant energy transfer among excitons localized in two neighboring quantum dots. We quantify the probability of energy transfer for a direct-gap transition by …
We investigate the electronic structure of a two-dimensional electron gas created at the surface of the multi-valley semimetal 1T-PtSe$_2$. Using angle-resolved photoemission and first-principles-based surface space charge calculations, we show how the induced quantum well subband states form multiple Fermi surfaces which exhibit highly anisotropic Rashba-like spin splittings. We further show how the presence of both electron- and hole-like bulk carriers causes the near-surface band bending potential to develop an unusual non-monotonic form, with spatially-segregated electron accumulation and …
Confinement of the electron gas along one of the spatial directions opens an avenue for studying fundamentals of quantum transport along the side of numerous practical electronic applications, with high-electron-mobility transistors being a prominent example. A heterojunction of two materials with dissimilar electronic polarisation can be used for engineering of the conducting channel. Extension of this concept to single-layer materials leads to one-dimensional electron gas (1DEG). MoS2/WS2 lateral heterostructure is used as a prototype for the realisation of 1DEG. The electronic polarisation …
We develop a model of the coherent exciton spin-valley dynamics in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides under elastic strain. The strain splits the exciton radiative doublet in linearly polarized states. Consequently, it induces an effective magnetic field acting on the exciton pseudospin and causes its precession. As a result, under circularly polarized excitation, the circular polarization of excitons oscillates with time, also a time-oscillating linear polarization appears. We study competition of the strain-induced effective magnetic field with the field caused by the exciton l…
The valley degrees of freedom of carriers in crystals is useful to process information and perform logic operations, and it is a key factor for valley application to realize the valley polarization. Here, we propose a model that the valley polarization transition at different valley points (-K and K points) is produced by biaxial strain. By the first-principle calculations, we illustrate our idea with a concrete example of Janus $\mathrm{GdClF}$ monolayer. The predicted $\mathrm{GdClF}$ monolayer is dynamically, mechanically and thermally stable, and is a ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor with …
Black phosphorus (BP) analogous tin(II) sulfide (SnS) has recently emerged as an attractive building block for electronic devices due to its highly anisotropic response. Two-dimensional (2D) SnS has shown to exhibit in-plane anisotropy in optical and electrical properties. However, the limitations in growing ultrasmall structures of SnS hinder the experimental exploration of anisotropic behavior in low dimension. Here, we present an elegant approach of synthesizing highly crystalline nanometer-sized SnS sheets. Ultrasmall SnS exhibits two distinct valleys along armchair and zig-zag directions …
This work reports the measurement of electron $g$ factor anisotropy ($| Δg |$ = $| g_{001} - g_{1 \bar 1 0} |$) for phosphorous donor qubits in strained silicon (sSi = Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$) environments. Multi-million-atom tight-binding simulations are performed to understand the measured decrease in $| Δg |$ as a function of $x$, which is attributed to a reduction in the interface-related anisotropy. For $x <$7\%, the variation in $| Δg |$ is linear and can be described by $η_x x$, where $η_x \approx$1.62$\times$ 10$^{-3}$. At $x$=20\%, the measured $| Δg |$ is 1.2 $\pm$ 0.04 $\times$ 10$^{-3}…
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2) are promising candidates for future electronics. Although the transport properties (e.g. mobility) at low electric field have been widely studied, there are limited studies on high-field properties, which are important for many applications. Particularly, there is lack of understanding of the physical origins underlying the property differences across different MX2. Here by combining first-principles calculations with Monte Carlo simulations, we study the high-field electron transport in defects-free unstrained and tensilely strained MX2 (M=Mo, …

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) bare large Berry curvature hotspots readily exploitable for geometric band effects. Tailoring and enhancement of these features via strain is an active research direction. Here, we consider spinless two- and three-band, and spinful four-band models capable to quantify Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment of strained TMDs. First, we provide a $k\cdot p$ parameter set for MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$, and WSe$_2$ in the light of the recently released ab initio and experimental band properties. Its validity range extends from $K$ valley edge t…
